"It's ready," Carla now announced as she injected Helena with it first before going over to do the same with Ada.
"When should it start taking effect?" Leon asked as he held Ada's hand in his, her eyes still closed as they had been for the last half hour.
"It shouldn't take too long," she told him before walking over to Chris to hold out her arms in front of her. "I'm ready."
Leon turned to look over at her, seeing her willingly ready to serve her time even if it meant a life sentence or even a death sentence.
Chris shook his head at her. "You may have murdered our entire team for vengeance against Simmons, but I won't see someone as smart as you rot in a prison cell for the rest of your life. You have the ability to cure many more people than all our men put together, I think that would be put to better use."
"You're letting me go?" Carla scowled.
"No. You'll be working along with the government to cure all those infected, then you'll be free to do as you please. Within reason," he added. "Just know we'll be keeping tabs on you for the rest of life though. We won't let you off that easy. For our men's sake, you'll just have to live with their deaths on your conscience."
Carla lowered her head as she now crossed her arms. Upon feeling a hand on her shoulder, she looked up to see Leon smiling at her warmly.
"This is your chance to live as you please, you won't have Simmons on your back anymore. You're free to be yourself again, Carla."
She now brought a hand to her head, looking a little unsure of herself. "I-I won't know what to do."
"You'll have time to contemplate on that," Chris now smiled and not one of those that were classed as being funny either.
Ada now announced to them all that she was now awake once again with a groan.
"Where the hell am I?" she asked as she looked around the room until it all came flooding back as Leon stepped over to her. "Oh, now I remember."
"How you feeling?" he asked as he slipped his hand into hers.
"Like I was hit by a cat the size of a truck," she groaned.
"Funny you should say that," Leon smiled as Helena now awoke.
"What happened?" she asked looking over at the pair next to her.
"Carla's dosed you both up," Leon told her.
"And that's a good thing?" she asked as she laid her arm over her eyes.
"If it cures you, it'll be worth it." Leon smiled.
"If?" she asked, looking to him.
He chuckled lightly before frowning as Ada was now forcing herself to sit up.
"Easy," he now warned her.
"I'm fine, Leon!" she glared at him with a grimace.
"I can see it on your face, Ada." He frowned. "Lay back down."
"Don't make me sedate you," Carla now threatened as she now headed over.
"You wouldn't dare!" Ada scowled as Helena couldn't help but laugh.
"I wouldn't?" Carla questioned. "Try me."
"You'll never take me," she fought them.
"Leon, hold her down." Carla smirked as she picked up a needle.
"Gladly," Leon smiled teasingly.
Chris and Jill looked to the pair with a smile. Carla seemed to be handling things rather well, hopefully everything would turn out alright for her now. Jake had been hoping to slip out, but seen as Carla had only taken a small amount of blood from him he knew he was now stuck until she took the amount needed.
"So, what comes next for you?" Sherry asked him as he sat and listened to the commotion going on in the other room.
He shrugged in response. "I'll go wherever the road takes me, I guess."
"What, no big plans for that sweet fifty million you wanted so badly?" she asked with a smile.
He shrugged. "Nope."
"Not one thing?"
"No," he shook his head. "I have no idea what to spend my sweet fifty dollars on."
"Fifty dollars?" she questioned looking a little puzzled.
"Yeah, fifty sweet dollars." He smiled. "I lowered my asking price."
Sherry's face lit up a this, seemed he'd changed for the better after all.
"What would I do with all that cash anyway?" he asked.
"I'm proud of you," she smiled warmly at him.
"Oh, come on." He sighed. "You sound like my mom."
"Thanks," she huffed.
"I'm just joking," he laughed as she hit him playfully on the arm before dropping down on the sofa next to him.
"Tell me about her," she now urged him.
"Who, my mom?" he asked.
She nodded as she leaned into him. "I bet she's far better than mine ever was."
"She's dead," he sighed.
"Oh, I'm sorry." She pulled away to look at him.
"No, it's fine." He reassured her. "She was sick even before I was born, and she just grew worse. I looked after her until the very end."
Sherry rested her head up against him as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, telling her of all the good times he managed to have with his mum before she died.
"Yours can't have been that bad though," he now looked down on her.
"No, she wasn't all bad. I actually loved her and my father. They did love me back, even if they did put their work before me."
"You must have had at least some good times together?" he asked as he rested his chin upon her head.
"There was one time..."
"Look at you two," Chris now interpreted the pair with a smile. "Wait till Claire hears Sherry has a boyfriend."
"He's not my boyfriend," Sherry scolded him as she pulled away.
"They grow up so fast," Jill added with a smile. "It takes me back to when I was dating."
"You date?" Chris now teased her instead.
She gave him a stern look.
"So what happened to him anyway?" he now asked, remembering the photo on her desk.
Jill shrugged. "After the incident at the Arklay mansion our relationship just fell apart."
Chris shook his head in disbelief. "Irons," he scowled. "I'm so glad that bastards dead too."
Sherry couldn't help but agree after finding out what Irons was like, the commotion in the next room soon turned to laughter and storytelling as Helena and Ada were now recuperating.
"Here we go," Helena teased as Leon now started telling them of a great story.
"So here I was..."
Ada was soon asleep, whether she was faking or actually sleeping Leon continued on as they all picked something or other out to question him on, he'd answer them as Carla checked up on Ada then Helena. It seemed the pair were doing quite well and soon they'd all be able to leave and head for home.
oOo
A few hours later and the pair were well and as healthy as Carla expected them to be. Chris and Jill had offered to take them all back to America, but Ada had her own plans. Leon and Helena had accepted, Jake and Carla had no other choice and Sherry was glad to be able to spend some quality time with Chris and Leon. Chris had now called in for transport for them while they waited on Carla, who was now deciding to tell Ada the truth or much rather allow her to get rid of the cocoon.
"Here," she told her, holding out a device.
Ada looked to her then to the device in her hand before taking it for herself to slot the thing into the computer. Once the video started she looked to monitor.
"Another failure. Bring me another subject," Carla had ordered.
"Why are we doing this?" one of the scientists asked.
"Are you refusing my orders?" she turned to him with a scowl.
"N-No, I-I would never, Dr Wong." He cowered slightly in front of her.
"Then go find me another subject," she repeated harshly.
"But, we don't..."
"Just go outside," she pointed to the door. "There's thousands of subjects to choose from."
"You want me to..."
"Get me another subject," she was not going to repeat herself again.
"Y-Yes, Dr." He quickly hurried out as she watched as their last victim was forced down to his knees in front of her.
She nodded to the man, indicating to the other scientists to inject him. The man before her just looked up, his eye lids droopy as if he'd been drugged.
"Let's see how this one goes," she thought with a slight smug look upon her face.
The man shook before bursting into flames, which soon died down to have him now be covered in slime. She walked over taking a sample of the slime, collecting it in a test tube for later study. Quite soon after it hardened and soon it started to crack. A figure emerged, but it unfortunately it was a slimy mess that was not what she was expecting. It opened it mouth, but nothing came out but a gargle.
"Put it out of its misery," she waved a hand at it, looking rather disgusted as she turned to head out.
The video cut to another room, showing the scientist from before.
"Yes, sir. Yes. I understand, sir." He seemed to be speaking with someone on the phone. "No. I wasn't allowed, sir. She told me to tell you she was busy. Yes, sir. I apologise, I won't let it happen again. Yes, sir. She seems to be working on creating a..."
Carla now made an appearance.
Ada could clearly see the fear written all over the man's face. "I-I'm sorry, sir. I have to go. N-No, sir. She's here..."
She snatched the phone from him, placing it to her ear.
"Hello, Simmons." She greeted. "Yes, I told Miller to tell you I'm onto something incredible."
Now moving it from her ear, she cut him off and threw it back to the man standing in front of her.
"You're the one who chose me as a test subject, aren't you?" she pointed at him now.
"No. No...no! It was Simmons! He forced me too!" panic now set in at seeing the two J'avo closing in from behind. "Please! Don't do this!"
"Believe it or not, I said the exact same thing."
"N-No!" he pleaded. "I beg of you!"
She nodded to her men to take hold of him.
"Now I see it was you all along," she now smiled as she looked him over. "You will be a perfect subject."
"N-Noooo!" he thrashed, trying to escape his bounds.
"Take him upstairs," she ordered. "I want to make a start on him right away."
Once again the video cut to a full cocoon standing in a tank.
"Finally done it," she smiled at her accomplishment. "This will be my greatest work yet."
The video then cut off making Ada turn to look at Carla.
"You can't get rid of your own creation, I understand."
Carla handed her a machine pistol, then turned to pick up a large case. She gave Ada one last look, a look of sadness and longing quite possibly for the thing that was hidden beneath the hard crusty shell, before she turned back to head out.
Ada looked back at the tank, seeing it start to crack. A man's hand now emerged, followed by its twin. At this Ada knew right away what Carla had intended to release.
"I pity you, Carla. I really do." She sighed heavily. "Simmons really pushed you over the edge so much so that you had to create your own version of him."
She knew this was why she could never get close to anyone, especially Leon. Getting attached, meant forming a bond. Forming a bond meant you were one. She shook her head at the very thought.
"We're beyond sympathy at this point," she scowled at the thing as she raised her gun. "We're beyond humanity."
All the pent up rage inside her at Simmons creating such a thing as Carla, as the woman still clearly had a thing for the man. She felt disgusted at having her look like her, share the same feelings as her, no not the same feelings as her, never that. But she couldn't bring herself to kill Carla, she was human. A very broken human, yes, but she believed Carla could now turn her life around and hopefully cure the world and herself of Simmons once and for all. With this she allowed herself to vent out all this rage onto the thing that was now emerging, her finger squeezed the trigger, firing at the cocoon and everything around it until the lab was engulfed in flames.
Giving one last look to the monitor that still had the photo of Carla and Simmons, she turned and headed on out.
