Olivia greeted Maya with a smile. It was a good day to have lunch together. Fitz was back at work. Mila was in class or hanging out with Karen. After their trip to the bowling alley, Karen broke down and cried when she lost. Mila knew something was really wrong. They talked for hours and Karen told Mila her life story. Karen was the only person Mila could bring to Olivia's home. Olivia didn't wait until the weekend to get Mila her apartment and Karen her car. They had what they wanted the next day after leaving the skating rink. She snapped at both of them when she came home to find pizza boxes and other clutter in her house. They hadn't been back since the day she yelled about cleaning up after them. That was fine. They each had an apartment. There was no need to hangout at her house or the house she shared with Fitz.

"It's really good to see you again Livvie."

"Yeah it's been a long 18 years."

"I didn't want to be apart for that long. I really thought you would call when Mila was born."

"You said I had to leave."

"I didn't mean for 18 years. I meant a few months or a year. I wanted you to learn that being a mom is difficult, so you wouldn't have another one a year later. I couldn't make it easy for you. If I had, you wouldn't be who you are now."

"I was alone."

"You were an adult. I was being nice letting you stay with me until you finished college. You know what? I think your generation is very entitled and you're raising entitled kids. Do you really think my mom would have let me stay in her house until I turned 21? No, we started working in high school, contributed to the household bills, cooked and cleaned while mom worked as a cook and a maid for rich families. We left at 18 because we didn't like being dependent on mom's paycheck. Your generation thinks your mom owes you something when you're an adult."

"You barely talked to me."

"Because I was working. I cooked and cleaned. I never asked you for money. I treated you like a princess. You attended great schools. I spent thousands of dollars on extracurricular activities. Do you really think I had all of that?"

"It wasn't enough."

"What was I supposed to do? Balance my career and Mila while you kept living like a carefree teen? Livvie, you were asking me to start over with a baby. That's a lot."

"I needed financial help, and you wouldn't have had to keep her every day. Only when I had classes."

"Mila was not my responsibility. You chose to struggle and it made you stronger."

"Fine whatever."

"What was my rule?"

Olivia didn't answer the question.

"No parties. You know that. And you told me you were at the library when you were at a party. You should have been studying. I said keep your legs closed until you are financially stable. You didn't like my rules."

"I didn't think I would get pregnant the first time. I was dumb."

"You're asking me for something you wouldn't do for Mila."

"That's where you're wrong. If Mila had a baby, I would be there every day for her and the baby. Whatever it takes."

"Spoiling her will make her weak."

"We can agree to disagree."

"I must have done something right. You're successful."

"Why didn't you call me?"

"I'm stubborn. That's my fault. Now I'm here, and I want to know everything about you."

"I don't know where to start."

"Do you work?"

"I'm taking a leave of absence from work."

"Is it stressful?"

"I like the company. I can't work right now. I was in a car accident, and I can't stand for a long time. My blood pressure drops if I do too much. I also have really low iron, and I need transfusions."

"Why didn't you call me after the accident?"

"I didn't think you would care."

"I have never stopped caring about you, and you have a very rare blood type. You should have called me. If you couldn't find a match, you would have died. I want you to call me if you need any more transfusions."

"I'm okay. My husband is a match."

"You're married, and your kid isn't a baby anymore."

"Mila is great."

"You're very proud of her. I can see it in your eyes."

"I want you to accept her."

"Livvie, her attitude is too much for me. That girl curses like a sailor. I won't criticize your hippie parenting. I don't want us to stop talking for another 18 years."

"My husband's birthday is tomorrow. Do you want to shop for a gift with me?"

Maya smiled. "Yeah. We can do anything you want. I just want to be here with you."

"Thank you for being here. I've missed you a lot."

"What does he like?"

"I don't know."

"How can you not know what your husband likes? How long have you've been married?"

"A month."

"Wow, you're newlyweds. How long did you date?"

"We didn't. Fitz and I work together."

"Okay...so you didn't date because of the company's policy?"

"No. That's not why."

"I don't understand... was he your best friend or something?"

"No."

"What was he to you?"

"My enemy."

Maya laughed, "What?"

"I married him because he saved my life."

"Are you saying you married a man you don't love because he's a match for you?"

"I am falling in love more every day."

"Livvie, you could have called me and avoided all of this. You know we are a match."

"I was unconscious for the first transfusion. It was right after the accident."

"Why didn't you call me the second time?"

"Because I thought you wouldn't answer the phone. I didn't want to be hurt again."

"I would have been on the next flight to DC. I don't want you to feel obligated to him. I'm here if you need another transfusion."

"I need him for more than that now, and he needs me."

"When was your last relationship?"

"I've never had a relationship before Fitz."

"You never dated?"

"No. I was scared of getting pregnant again."

"You could have had another baby when you were settled in your career."

"I gave Mila everything. I didn't have space in my life for another baby and my career. I might have a baby with my husband."

"Are you happy Livvie?"

"Yes. I'm not alone anymore."
