Chapter 30

Song(s): Die From a Broken Heart (Maddie & Tae)

Sliding his sunglasses up the bridge of his nose and onto the top of his head, Pierce tightened his one handed grip on the steering wheel before slamming on the brakes of the Charger.

"JESUS, WHAT ARE…"

Hearing the engine shut off as she threw her eyes onto the man beside her in the driver's seat, Miriam winced as Pierce tossed his keys and Blackberry onto the dashboard with a loud clatter.

"You are not leaving me until you tell me what happened between you and Lucifer last night."

Feeling her mouth falling open as she stared straight into his cold blue eyes, she scoffed before turning to look out her passenger window.

Not leaving me…

"I didn't sleep with him last night if that's what you are curious about," she spat, hearing his low whistle as he unbuckled his seat belt.

"HEY!"

Feeling Pierce's hand roughly unbuckling and tossing aside her own seat belt, Miriam sat perfectly still as she felt his eyes searching her face.

"I came out of the shower last night to find Mazikeen in my hotel room. It didn't occur to me right away that she had been sent as a distraction. A distraction to keep me from you, from Lucifer. And I fought. I fought her to get to that fucking door to your room and as soon as I busted through after having died twice…" he spoke, softening his voice as he stretched his fingers over the gear shift. "I find you sitting in darkness with tears streaming down your face."

"Yeah well, a lot of my nights have ended up in tears," Miriam spoke, feeling the sting of her own words as she watched Pierce's hand slide off the gear shift to rest against his jeaned thigh.

"No thanks to me I imagine." Turning over the engine, Pierce didn't bother to buckle his seat belt as he floored the pedal for the final twenty minute drive to the town of Fairfield.

Tyler Acre Farms, 7241 Williams Road, Fairfield, California…

Feeling the Charger slowing down as they approached the gravel driveway towards the farm, Miriam caught sight of her Mother's hand drawn wooden sign advertising fresh eggs and unpasteurized goat milk leaning against the mailbox as she folded her hands together in her lap.

Why couldn't I tell him that Lucifer made me choose last night?

If I made the right decision, I should be happy

I should be happy to tell him

But, I am not happy

Staring up at her childhood home as the Charger went silent once more, Miriam pushed open her door and shielded her eyes from the blazing sun as she heard Pierce's door open.

"This is going to come off as rude no matter how I say it, but…I would like to be alone."

Catching the slow shake of his head as Pierce turned his cold eyes onto hers from over the top of the Charger, she knew he was furious as he suddenly slammed the palm of his hand down on the roof of the car.

"Fine. You won't talk to me? Stay here in Fairfield for as long as you want. Maybe Lucifer will come join you" he growled, getting back into the driver's seat before slamming the door.

Wincing as she heard the tires skidding over the gravel and rocks, she watched with heaviness in her chest as the Charger disappeared from sight.

Why do you keep doing this?

You are not moving forward

With him or with your own life

Sitting still on the porch swing, Miriam steadied her eyes on the overcast sky just as the front door slowly creaked open.

"You have been sitting out here for nearly forty-five minutes staring up at the sky as if you are searching for something."

Looking down to her lap as her Father's voice spoke out from beside her, Miriam bit down on her tongue before slowly shaking her head.

"Just wondering if God is going to talk to me again" she breathed, hearing the creak of the wooden swing settling with her father's weight as he took a seat beside her.

"God is always talking to his children Miriam; you just have be open, silent, and accepting to hear him."

Well, He also talks to you when you least expect it Dad

Like at a crime scene in the dead of night

Remaining silent as she listened to her father's words with a million thoughts of her own running rampant, Miriam narrowed her eyes as a rumble of thunder sounded off in the far distance over the treeline as she pulled the white blanket up against her shoulders.

"Dad, does it storm when I am not here?"

Leaning forward as he glanced up into the darkening sky, Allen breathed in deep as Moses let out a bark from inside the house.

"Maybe, once since last month? Why do you ask?"

I can smell the rain before it even falls from the clouds

I feel the electricity in the air

"I don't ever remember it storming this much when I lived here" she whispered, tucking her feet beneath her as she stared out at the driveway.

Are you stopping anywhere for the night Marcus?

"How are you doing Miriam?"

Holding her breath as a million words screamed in her head all at once, she realized that she couldn't actually tell her father the truth about the downward spiral of a mess her life had taken.

You can't tell him that you need to find a new place to live in Los Angeles. You can't tell him that you are being pulled between two men who are central figures in the Holy fucking Bible

"Los Angeles is fine. School starts up again…" Halting her words as she felt her father's warm hand coming to rest on hers, Miriam glanced up into his face and for the first time, noticed the exhausted lines around his tired eyes.

A Farmer never rests

"I meant, how are you doing?"

"Um…"

I can't hide it

Not anymore

"I saw that it was your Police friend who dropped you off. I also saw, that he didn't expect to be leaving here alone."

He must have seen Pierce slam his hand down on the car. Probably even heard his words

"Has he hurt you at all?"

Giving her head a small shake, she felt her Father's hand giving her fingers a quick squeeze as she heard another rumble of thunder in the far distance.

"No Dad. If anything, I was the one that hurt him."

"Relationships are messy. He is established while you are still finding your way. Patience and understanding are…"

Rising to her feet as her Father stopped talking mid sentence, Miriam walked to the edge of the porch and listened to the bangs of her Mother in the kitchen before holding out her left hand, palm up to catch the raindrops.

"You and Mom read the Bible daily. She thinks she is serving God by being a housewife and cooking and baking from scratch and you live the life of a Farmer, tilling God's land yet, when I told you that Marcus Pierce is Cain the son of Adam and Eve, you didn't believe me."

"Every story in the Bible is a lesson Miriam. Some figures are given names to be examples for which God wishes us to live" Allen lectured as he watched his daughter turn around to face him.

"Dad, Aaron is in Hell." Hearing the words falling from her own lips, Miriam watched as her Father rose from his seat.

"Don't start this again Miriam. Think of your Mother…"

"HE IS IN HELL! Aaron was gay and as such, your precious God has tossed him into the fiery pits of Hell!" she shouted, hearing Moses barking widely from somewhere in the house. Taking a step backwards as she watched her Father lunge towards her, Miriam winced at the strength of his hands as he gripped her shoulders hard.

"YOU NEED TO STOP THIS MIRIAM!"

"Lucifer gave me a choice. I could have saved Aaron, but I chose Cain…" she sputtered, feeling her Father's hand against her forehead as he touched her face.

"Lucifer? Go inside and lie down until dinner. Miriam, please don't fight me on this."

"But…it's true. It's all true…"

"Miriam, please."

Raising her eyes onto her Father's worn looking face, she saw the many years of sun and long hours burned into the deep wrinkles of his skin. Some years had been harder than others, but he had always made sure there was food on the table. Food taken from their land and their land only.

"Your son is in Hell. Wouldn't you want me to try everything to set him free?"

...

Two hours later...

Rolling over onto her back as she felt the damp strains of her hair sticking uncomfortably along her throat, Miriam sighed as she stared up at the ceiling above her.

"What am I gonna do?"

Sitting up, she slowly swung her legs over the side of the bed and glanced to the wall beside her, thankful that her Mother had not re-hung the small cross that she consistently took down and tossed aside upon every visit. Glancing down at the wooden floor boards, her eyes caught the corner of a hardcover book half hidden behind the back of her old school desk. Sliding off the edge of the bed, Miriam crawled on her hands and knees and with stretched out fingers, grabbed the book, flipping it over to read the cover.

The Essential Edgar Allan Poe

"What?..."

Flipping open the front cover of the book, Miriam scanned her eyes over the slopping signature of a long forgotten friend before returning to the table of contents. "Alone…how appropriate…" she whispered to the empty bedroom before lying on her back. Stretching her legs out and crossing her ankles, she propped the book up on her chest and started to mouth the words of the all too familiar poem…

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view…

Perking her ears up at the sound of distant car tires rolling over the gravel drive, Miriam froze as she held the book steady with both hands.

Pierce?

Listening to the crunching of the gravel growing louder towards the house, she set the book alongside her thigh with shaky hands as beads of cold sweat started to form on her forehead.

"Cain?"

Rolling onto her hands and knees, Miriam slowly brought herself upright and slid off the edge of her bed before throwing open the window.

"No….no…."

Feeling her breath hitch in the back of her throat as she stared at the well dressed man standing in the yard puffing away on a cigarette, Miriam felt her stomach sink as he turned his dark eyes up and onto the window with a wide smile.

Three hours outside Fairfield…

"Fuck sakes…"

Gripping the top of the Charger steering wheel with one hand, Marcus Pierce dug into the pocket of his jeans and glanced down at the caller id before flipping it over right side up.

"Not in the office Decker," he grunted, tossing the phone aside to the empty passenger seat before giving the seat a second glance.

Why can't you just listen to me Miriam?

Pressing his foot down harder on the accelerator, he tucked his chin into his chest and moistened his lips as the flat land all around him stretched out towards the approaching sunset…

(Flashback)

Wiping the back of his dirty hand against the heavy sweat of his brow, Cain roughly tossed his walking stick down onto the ground before taking a seat against a large boulder that offered some reprieve from the blazing sunshine.

"God, you have forsaken me. Mother and Father, you both have forsaken me," he spoke to no one as he dug into his bag of meager possessions. Pulling out the last bit of dried fish and small carrots, he leaned back and closed his eyes as a dry gust of wind blew over his face.

"I will make my own way in this world. I will create and conquer despite this…cursed mark that YOU HAVE PLACED UPON ME!"

Hearing his shout echoing all around him as two buzzards angrily flew off a dead tree branch to his far off left, Cain wiped his fingers along the fabric of his hip before reaching out for his bag. Gripping the fabric with both hands, he easily tore it into two pieces before wrapping one piece around his head. Pushing it up above his eyes, he wiped away a bead of sweat before wrapping the second piece around his upper right bicep. Giving one last look at the red sun burnt puckered skin that made a jagged circle, he let out a low growl as he tied the excess fabric.

"You are an ordinary man to everyone's eyes." Standing up, he grabbed his stick and set off once more into the heat and sun for a destination unknown.

Will I find others?

Two hours later…

Greedily slurping at the water in his cupped hands as he waded into the watering hole, he was about to fully submerge himself to wash off the dirt and sweat that had seeped into every pore of his skin when he narrowed his eyes. Spying a half submerged figure staring at him about thirty feet in distance, he continued to scoop water into his hands before rubbing along his arms and chest.

"Do you belong to a village?"

Splashing a final handful of water over his face, he stared at the equally sun burnt face that had waded closer.

"I ask, do you belong to a village?" he shouted once more as the figure finally stood up in the water.

She is just a girl he noted as he moved his eyes over her and taking in the fabric of her dress as it clung to her body.

"My village is up over the rocks in front of the sun," she spoke, keeping her head down as he noticed her glancing at his chest.

"What is your name?"

"Awan."

"Awan, take me to your village."

Nodding her head, the young girl kept her eyes focused on her bare feet as she followed Cain out of the water and onto the sandy rock.

"My Father will be pleased to have a strong man. In the Land of Nod, there are only my brothers…" she began to speak as Cain cut her off.

"Are you of child bearing age?"

Catching the slight blush on her cheeks, he watched as she took a step away from him before raising her eyes onto his face.

"I am the youngest of my sisters, and the only one who has not given birth," she admitted as he closed the distance between them.

"I will take you as my wife, and you will bear me a son. He shall be named Enoch…."

"Awan. You were the first…" Pierce breathed as he caught sight of a large green highway sign with Los Angeles at the bottom of the three approaching destinations. Slamming his blundestone boot down hard on the brake pedal, Pierce spun the wheel and felt the Charger slowing to a low growl as he spun the vehicle around on the empty highway. Facing the direction he had just spent three hours speeding away from, he narrowed his eyes and bared his teeth as he slammed his boot down on the gas pedal.

"I am coming for you Miriam Elizabeth Tyler, and by fucking God, you had better be ready for me."
