Chapter 30: Ancient Fossil
Eighteen million years ago, a creature known as the trilobite existed on Earth. Today they are extinct, but evidence that they existed can be found in the form of fossils. In a particular lab, one Professor Shimura was researching the means to revive one such trilobite fossil. Using a series of chemical experiments, he seemed to have succeeded. However, his experiments did not go unnoticed by Shocker, and Colonel Zol in particular. "Rather ingenious. Not even our esteemed scientists could have done it better."
He walked over to the other Shocker agents. "With Professor Shimura's experiment a success at long last, we can combine this ancient creature with a cyborg designed to live off of blood." 'And with this new type of monster,' Great Leader chimed in, 'It will pave the way for our domination of this sector. We will name this new monster… Trilobronzo. Have the human remodeling done at six tomorrow night. We'll perform the trilobite blood replacement at two past midnight.'
Later, Shimura was seeing his son off on a one-night hiking trip. "So Papa," the boy said, "Do you think you'll get to research in peace without all that noise?" Shimura and his wife laughed. "Straight to the point as always," Shimura said. Little did they know, Zol was already in the process of perverting Shimura's research. He stood over a man in preparation for remolding. "All that stand in our way are our enemies," Zol recited, "And you shall be the chosen one who takes their lives."
By now, they had stolen the trilobite fossil, which was eventually noticed by Shimura. Zol checked his watch. "Alright. Begin the blood replacement." As this was being done, a secret panel in Shimura's room opened, several Combatmen stepping out, much to Shimura's surprise. "Who are you people!?" "We are from a world beyond your knowledge, Professor," one of the Combatmen replied, "We are here because we have a need for you." Shimura scoffed. "Leave at once, or I will call the police."
The Combatmen were unimpressed, managing to capture him after a brief struggled. "Relax Professor," one said, "You're no good to us dead. We're simply taking you someplace else." They brought Shimura to the hideout, surprising the professor with the fact that it was found beneath his house. Zol smiled at the professor's arrival. "Welcome, Professor Shimura." He offered his hand, but Shimura didn't take it. Zol simply chuckled. "I can understand your feelings, but you should remember that you're here as an abducted guest."
He showed Shimura a trilobite fossil. "We need you to revive this fossil. I assure you it will be put towards peace." Shimura scoffed. "I'd appreciate it if you were honest with me. You wouldn't have straight-up abducted me and held me against my will if you interested in world peace." Zol chuckled. "Alright, I was having a little joke. But you really have no choice in the matter." He walked over a door and knocked on it, revealing they also had Shimura's wife. "Natsue!"
"Refuse our request," Zol warned, "And I think this trilobite is going to be sucking your wife's blood." "That's ridiculous," Shimura said, "Trilobites don't drink blood!" "Normally no," Zol admitted, "But our science has allowed for a blood-sucking trilobite to exist. Now I've been polite up until now, but if you try my patience any further, your precious Natsue becomes Test Subject One!" Shimura just charged at Zol, only to get held back by Combatmen. Zol growled. "Fine then! Being the test!"
Shimura was forced to watch in horror as his revived trilobite was applied to Natsue's neck, drinking her blood and growing in size, becoming Trilobronzo at full size. "Looks like it's a success," Zol said, "Now we'll set it after our enemies. And the first target… FBI agent Eclair Seaetto." He laughed a deep, cruel laugh as Trilobronzo stood up. "With our enemies out of the way, no one else will dare oppose Shocker!"
Elsewhere, Goro and Motoyasu were having lunch together. "Hey Motoyasu," Goro said, "I read this book about a scientist researching a way to revive the fossil of an ancient creature." Motoyasu thought about the idea. "Sounds way too fanciful. Like something out of a dream." "You adults don't dream much, do you?," Goro asked, "You could at least dream about getting a home of your own within fifteen years of installments!" Motoyasu's eye twitched. "When did you get so cheeky? I think you've been hanging around Ren and Naofumi too much."
Goro went to dump their garbage, only to see a trilobite lying on the ground. Of course, he didn't realize it was a trilobite, just a large and creepy bug. Just then, Combatmen arrived. "Can't go five days without these guys coming out of the woodwork," Motoyasu said. "Where is Eclair!?," one of the Combatmen demanded. "Even if I was inclined to tell you," Motoyasu said, "We're not exactly joined at the hip. Unlike you control freaks, we don't keep tabs on each other twenty-four seven."
He quickly started knocking out the Combatmen as the trilobite was picked up by a middle-aged man. "That racing club again…" Meanwhile, Malty was playing solo card game in the sitting room at the racing club. Outside, the man from before contacted Zol. "Sir, we were unable to locate Eclair. I'm moving forward with Plan B." 'Understood,' Zol replied. The man slipped Trilobronzo into the room where Malty was, just as the two Riders pulled up. They walked inside just as Trilobronzo had reached full size, Malty passed out on the couch.
"Naofumi Iwatani and Ren Amaki!," Trilobronzo realized. He pulled off some of his armor and threw it like daggers. The Riders quickly dodged and countered, only for the fossil monster to flee. Ren checked on Malty. She had lost a lot of blood, but thankfully was still alive, just in a coma. "Just what sort of monster has Shocker cooked up this time?," Naofumi asked, "We'd better let Motoyasu know."
In Shocker's hideout, Natsue was in a similar state, Shimura watching over her. Zol entered the room. "It's no use keeping up this stubbornness. If you agree to the experiment, then I'd be happy to restore her. Of course, further refusal would result in your son, Wataru I believe it was, being targeted next." He relished the look of horror on Shimura's face. Meanwhile, Wataru was with the rest of his camping group, singing a song they had come up with about the Kamen Riders. "Let's go! The spectacular machine! Rider Jump! Rider Kick! Kamen Rider! Kamen Rider! Rider! Rider!"
Ren grabbed one of the scales. "Maybe we can use this find a solution." Motoyasu was looking over his girlfriend, fist clenched. "Shocker's gone too far this time." Ren offered a comforting hand. "We'll find something. Even if we have to raid Shocker's hideout to do so. In the meantime Naofumi and I will check these out at the university." On the way, they ran into trouble with some Combatmen, Trilobronzo nearby. "We can't afford to waste time," Naofumi said. Ren nodded, and they activated their Typhoons. "Henshin!"
Leaping into the air, they transformed into Kamen Riders 1 and 2. However, Trilobronzo seemed to have disappeared. Actually, he had shrunk down into his original trilobite form. Having lost their target, they decided finish their business and return, only to find the room Malty was placed in was filled with garlic bulbs. The smell hit their more sensitive noses like a truck. "For crying out loud!," Naofumi said, "It's not like a vampire attacked Malty!" "That's what I was trying to tell Rishia!," Raphtalia replied.
Rishia blushed. Eclair sighed. "Did you find out anything from the university?" Naofumi nodded. "The armor pieces seem to come from a creature that lived during ancient times on Earth, before humans evolved." "Come to think about it," Goro said, "I remember reading on a Professor Shimura who was researching how to revive an ancient creature!" Meanwhile, Shimura had finally decided to give in, much to Zol's delight. Of course, he had to promise not to harm Wataru, but that was a small price to pay.
However, he had to allow Shimura back into his normal home when someone came visiting, Trilobronzo going with him to make sure nothing funny happened. As it turned out, it was Naofumi and Ren. "Sorry to interrupt your work professor," Naofumi said, "But we heard about the trilobite you were trying to revive, and we were curious how the project was going." "Sorry, you just missed it," Shimura said, "It's not here." Ren raised an eyebrow. "Not here?"
Shimura nodded. "The people at the laboratory of Jouhoku University insisted on borrowing it, and took it away." "Well that's a shame," Naofumi said. Shimura nodded. "Please, have a seat." The two sat down at a nearby table, Shimura sitting across from them. "You don't exactly look well," Naofumi said, "Is everything alright?" "Oh, it's nothing," Shimura insisted. What he didn't know was that the two Riders were sensing someone else in the room thanks to their enhanced bodies.
Ren grabbed a notepad and wrote on it. "Are you being targeted by someone?," he wrote. He discreetly showed the note to Shimura. Shimura eyed the note before getting up. "Please excuse me." Once he was out of the room, Naofumi walked over to the nearby curtains. "Anything?," Ren asked. "I'm not sure," Naofumi replied. Just then, Shimura came back in with Wataru. "Where's Mama?," Wataru asked. "She went out for a while," Shimura replied. Ren raised an eyebrow. That response was definitely forced.
The Riders returned to the racing club. "There's something suspicious regarding Shimura's trilobite," Naofumi said. "We stopped by the Jouhoku University," Ren said, "But they never borrowed it." "That could mean it's been stolen," Eclair said, "And whoever it was is threatening Shimura with silence." "Maybe something worse," Motoyasu noted, "Rishia, stay here with Malty, we're checking it out."
With the situation being what it was, Zol had Wataru taken prisoner as well. "This isn't what you promised," Shimura pointed out. "Oh stop complaining," Zol said, "I'm making sure he's still safe. And if you want him to stay that way, you'll get to work immediately." Shimura grumbled but did so. Zol smirked, then had Shimura restrained. "I believe it's about time you got to experience Trilobronzo's effect firsthand."
Shimura smirked. "Do that and your experiment is a failure." Zol's smirk faded. "What do you mean?" "Do you take me for a fool?," Shimura said, "I made sure the trilobite has a short lifespan. Now I can keep extending it a little at a time, but only if I'm alive." Zol was flabbergasted. "W-What!?" "I will do whatever it takes to protect the lives of my family," Shimura pointed out. Zol gritted his teeth. Shimura had him, and there was no way to get out of it. "So then, Colonel," Shimura said, "Why don't we continue this discussion once my wife is returned to normal."
Zol was about to slap Shimura, but then Great Leader chimed in. 'Stop, Colonel Zol! We have to move on to the next phase of operation before the Kamen Rider arrives! Shimura has turned our own ways against us. Now we're the ones who have no choice but to comply with his demands if we wish to actually succeed this time.' Zol grumbled, then sighed in defeat. "Fine. But you had better be able to extend the trilobite's lifespan, Professor."
Meanwhile the four racing club members had reached Shimura's home. At first it seemed like no one was home, until a group of Combatmen came out to attack. After getting knocked around the grunts ran for it, but in their haste they left the secret passage to their hideout partially ajar, letting the group know where it was. Tobei was also arriving, have been informed of the situation by Rishia.
Inside, Naofumi and Ren heard a distinct ticking sound. "Looks like they hid a time bomb in the base," Ren noted. He searched around and found Shimura and his family, all tied up. They quickly got the three of them out just as the base exploded. "Looks like Shocker also planned for us arriving," Eclair noted. "Professor," Naofumi said, "Do you know where they're going?" "They headed for Haneda," Shimura replied, "They intend to spread the trilobite I revived all over the world."
"Damn," Ren said, "We need to get after them." "We'll stay here with the family," Motoyasu said. Naofumi and Ren nodded, then hurried outside, where they readied their Typhoons. "Henshin!" Transformed, they headed for Tokyo International Airport, where they intercepted the man who slipped the trilobite near Malty. The man was shocked. "Kamen Riders! But how!?" He tried to run, only for 2 to leap in front of him. "Hand over that briefcase!"
Suddenly several Combatmen appeared. The Riders got to work taking them out while the Shocker agent went to cover and contacted Zol. "Sir! The Riders are here!" 'Damn,' Zol said, 'I was sure the time bomb would take of them. Listen. You must let Trilobronzo suck your blood so that he can fight.' "Yes sir!," the man said, opening the briefcase. The living fossil finished the man and grew to full size just as the Riders were finishing off the grunts. He launched his armor pieces to attack, only for the Riders to dodge or deflect them.
More Combatmen came in to attack, only for them to get ambushed by Motoyasu. "This one's for Malty!" As Trilobronzo continued to fight, he realized he was running out of energy. "What's going on? What did the professor do to me?" He launched an acid spray at 1, only for him to block it with a hapless Combatman. "1," 2 said as he ran over, "It looks like he's running out of steam. We might be able to finish him off." 1 nodded. "Let's do this together then!" They leapt into the air for the final attack. "Rider Kick!"
Trilobronzo was sent sprawling to the ground, losing the energy to get back up before changing back into an ordinary fossil. Later, Shimura provided the group with an antidote to revive Malty. "Good grief…," she said, "I'm feeling pretty hungry right now… Like I lost too much blood…" Motoyasu breathed a sigh of relief. The group celebrated their victory at Shimura's house.
"So what was happening to Trilobronzo at the end?," Motoyasu asked. "That was my doing," Shimura explained, "When Colonel Zol chose to break his promise, I decided to do the same. I set it up so that Trilobronzo would have a limited lifespan. Then when Zol conceded to restore Natsue, I simply extended it by a small margin. He would only have lived five more minutes longer." The two Riders smiled. "I guess Zol and Shocker once again underestimated how hard humans will fight to maintain their way of life," Naofumi noted, "And they may never learn this lesson. Which is why we'll continue to fight them until they are gone for good."
To be continued…
And so once again Shocker is reminded that not everyone is going to just bow to their demands. They keep calling such people stubborn, but I think they're the stubborn ones. Oh well, they'll learn the hard way in time. Read and review.
