I truly do not understand how I get myself into certain situations. At least this time my captor was kind enough to explain to me why I was tied to the train track movie serial style... ON MY WEDDING DAY!
This morning Jimmy and I were called into Mr. White's office to go over the agenda for the schedule for the day's event.
"Lois, you should have the copy from your interview with the mayor to the printer by now," Perry suggested.
"Already ahead of you, Chief," I smiled.
"Olsen, you should go get your tux so that Martha can take it to the Church with the rest of ours," he pointed to the coat rack where three tuxedos were already hanging.
"Martha has a group of ladies from Smallville cam early to help decorate the church," he continued.
"Uh, Chief," Jimmy tried to interrupt.
"There is a lot to do, but Lois we need to make sure that we are ready for the Political Luncheon this afternoon," the Chief ignored him.
"Chief," Jimmy tried again.
"What, Olsen," he snapped.
"I haven't picked up my tux yet," He immediately braced for the impact of an angry lecture.
"I told- I-" Mr. White was turning red like a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I would almost swear that he was going to spit fire. He took a deep breath and tried again, "Well, Mr. Olsen, you've done it again. I've warned you time and time again. I am now warning you positively for the last time!"
The intercom rang interrupting his rant. Jimmy looks so relieved.
"Yes, what is it?" Mr. White bellowed. Denise was having a hard time trying to get her words straight. "I don't know what's wrong with the girl. What is it?"
"There's, um, a- gentleman here to see you, Mr. White," she hesitantly informed.
"Well, what's his name? Who is he?"
"I don't know. He won't say."
"Oh, you don't. Well, you know I never see people unless- What's he look like. I said, what does he look like?"
"I don't know," she replied.
Mr. White was about to blow a gasket, "You don't know his name, you don't know what he looks like, you- Send him up." He took another breath, "I don't know what's the matter with that girl."
"Denise is usually very efficient, Chief."
Jimmy tried to comment but was quickly shut down, but that didn't stop him, "She acted as though she was seeing things."
Through the door came the last thing I was wanted to see on my wedding day... Gunner Flinch. I'm just kidding. The man wore a lead mask and a bland gray suit. He made sure that no identifiers were visible and walked precisely.
"Maybe she was," Jimmy exclaimed as he hid behind me. Yeah like that is going to help you, Jimmy.
"What is the meaning of this," Mr. White demanded.
"Patience, Mr. White" the man began, "I shall try to explain."
"I wish Clark was here to see this," I mentioned to Jimmy.
"In the first place, I'm gratified to find you all here together. Perry White, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen," he pointed out. Congratulations you know our names! "I could only wish that Clark Kent could be present also."
"Did I hear my name mentioned?" Clark entered with a gleam in his eye and took his spot next to me. He chuckled as he addressed the stranger, "Well, I didn't realize it was so close to Halloween."
"It was good of you to come, Mr. Kent."
"No trouble at all. What's this all about?"
"It's really very simple," the man stated. "The Daily Planet, with Superman's help, succeeded in ruining the best-paying racket I ever had and sent several of my closest friends to jail."
"Well, they must have deserved it," Clark stated.
"That's beside the point. I intend to get even," he replied.
"With Superman?" I laughed, "Why, don't be silly. Nobody can harm him."
"No, but I can strike at him through his friends," he stated.
"Meaning us?" Jimmy concluded.
"All of you. And with you out of the way, the Planet's days as a newspaper are numbered."
"You'll never get away with it," Perry suggested. "Whatever you're planning Superman will stop you."
"When he doesn't even know where I am? Or what I look like, who I am?"
I was starting to get nervous, but Jimmy spoke up, "Well, he'll know what you look like as soon as he sees through that mask you're wearing."
I looked at Clark to gauge what he was doing and watched as his eyes narrowed in on our new friend. His focus let up and I knew that what the man was saying about his mask was true.
"Then he'll yank it off," I threatened.
"He can't. It is locked on," the man sounded smug. "And besides, I have 10 other men walking the streets of this town dressed exactly like I am and wearing the same masks. Theirs are locked on too. I'm the only one with the key."
Mr. White bellowed once again, "Ten other men who look like that?"
Clark and I shared a quick side look, I nodded and he took his cue to slip out. The man continued, "Exactly. Superman can't watch all of us at the same time. While he's watching some of us, the rest will be taking care of you."
"Taking care of us? How," Jimmy questioned.
"In several ways," He began laughing, "I'm a do-it-yourself man, myself. I love gimmicks. And I've got a different surprise fixed up for each one of you." Pride laced his words, "This is one time when Superman won't come to your rescue."
You wanna bet? He left in a huff, with us staring after him.
"Where's Kent," Mr. White asked. "Now, where did he go?"
I covered quickly, "Oh you know Clark, he is probably off informing Inspector Henderson of the threat, just in case the can do something."
"Well, maybe the guy in the mask was just bluffing," Jimmy suggested.
"I don't think so," Perry sighed. "He sounded as if he meant every word. I just wish it wasn't today of all days."
I walked to his side and put my arms around the Chief. "Of all the days we are getting threatened, I'm sorry they had to do it on your wedding day, Lois. This is supposed to be the happiest day of your life."
I stood up and moved so I could face him better. "Maybe that is it. Chief, don't you think this could all be a gag to ruin my wedding day? Or somebody's idea of an outrageous practical joke?"
"No. I would like to think so, but frankly, I don't think our lead-headed friend is a prankster," Perry reasoned. "That is why I want to send you two out of town on an assignment."
"Oh, you mean, you want us to run away?" Jimmy barked.
"Who said anything about running away?"
I spoke up, "And pray tell, where will you be?"
"Right here at my desk, of course, as usual."
"Yeah, well, that's us. Right here too, as usual," Jimmy stated.
"Now just a minute, Chief. I think Jimmy's right. We wouldn't run away any more than you would. And you wouldn't want us to, would you?"
"No, I guess not," He sighed.
"Okay, Business as usual. I hope," Jimmy replied.
"Well, if it's business as usual," I smiled. I looked at my watch, "I think you and I are about due at that political luncheon."
"I suppose you're right," he confirmed.
Jimmy started getting anxious, "Oh you mean, both of you are going away and leaving me alone?"
"What's the matter," Mr. White teased. "Are you scared?"
"Sure. Aren't you?"
Mr. White scoffed as he began to follow me out of the office. He turned to Jimmy just before closing the door. "Chloe will put to get the tuxedos as soon as Martha is here. Please make sure they know that they have to pick up your tux as well."
"Yes sir," Jimmy sighed.
