What could it be? She wonders, remembering the slight tremor in his voice and his thinly-veiled unease upon seeing her. Something's definitely up with him.
For an absurd moment, she fears something might be wrong with the project he's been working on. But it's worth billions of dollars, she reasons with herself. James won't hide anything about that from me.
We're partners after all. Unless …
A possibility occurs to her, and she feels her pulse quicken. Maybe he has realized that she's been manipulating his feelings to get him to do her bidding?
Absently, her eyes fall on the computer screen in front of her. An online news portal's website stares back at her with the bold headline: CDC Warns Against Possible Outbreak of New Disease in New England Area.
Her heart sinks at the possible implication.
Is it the disease? Is that what he can't control? She distinctly remembers Bright telling her that this will fizzle out as summer approaches. Howbeit, should it still be spreading at a rate to alert the CDC?
"It'll be over by June," she recalls James's words from months ago and hopes that his evil genius brain won't fail her.
In all the years Edward had imagined this moment, he hadn't expected it to be like this.
A well-built man with a mop of curly, brown hair on top of his head peers at him through thick glasses. The corners of his mouth pull down into a frown after he finishes his perusal. Letting out a huffed breath, he says, reluctantly, "You look good."
Edward offers a wobbly smile to his ex-best friend. "I've missed you too, Em."
"What do you mean by too?" Emmett snaps. "I haven't missed you at all. I even forgot you existed."
Edward steels himself; this is going to be an interesting visit.
