Hailey slowly pushed the door open and looked around expecting to see Adam since his car was still in the driveway, but he was nowhere to be found.
"Why's it so quiet?" Jay asked as he closed the door.
"I don't know," Hailey glanced at her phone to confirm it was just past 9pm. They'd spent the entire day in the NICU taking turns holding Blake and just looking at him.
They agreed that Drew could go to the hospital on the weekend to meet the baby. It'd give them enough time to really explain to him what was happening and Jay wanted to make sure Drew was properly bathed and sanitized to avoid spreading any possible germs to Blake.
"He wouldn't have left, right?" Jay put their coats in the front closet.
"No, of course not," Hailey ran a hand through her hair and slipped her shoes off, "Maybe he's just upstairs. He has to be."
Jay nodded and led the way to Drew's room. Just as he was about to open Drew's door, he heard a soft crying on the other side.
"I'm sorry, buddy, I'm sure they'll be home soon," Adam was saying.
"They forgot, they forgot about me," Drew cried.
Hailey shoved past Jay and opened the door, "Drew."
He looked up from his pillow rubbing his eyes, "Mom?"
"I'm here, we're home," Hailey quickly made her way across the room to his bed and sat next to him, "Come here."
Drew climbed out from under the covers and made his way into her lap.
Adam sighed and stood up. He ran his hand over his face and slightly waved at Jay, "Hey."
"Hey," Jay nodded toward the door and waited in the hallway.
Adam walked out behind him and closed the door, "Sorry. I know he should have been asleep earlier, but he was upset and-"
"Don't worry about it," Jay shook his head, "I understand. Was everything else okay?"
"Yeah, totally," Adam nodded, "We got pizza for dinner, then Kim and Cara left around 7pm to get her ready for bed. Kev stopped by with ice-cream, but Drew wasn't really interested. He's been asking a lot of questions that I didn't have the answers to."
"Thank you though for staying with him, we really appreciate it," Jay said.
"Any time," Adam lightly hit his arm, "Everything okay then? I know you guys said he's officially yours, but we didn't get much more info than that."
Jay smiled and nodded. He pulled his phone out of his pocket to show Adam a picture, "There he is."
Adam chuckled while taking the phone, "Mind if I look through some?"
"Yeah, of course," Jay looked over his shoulder, "I took these of Hailey, but I think I have some from Will saved too."
"He's a little guy," Adam said quietly, "What're they thinking?"
"Four to five weeks," Jay bit his lip, "At least. They're hoping he'll be here by Christmas."
"Damn," Adam whispered, "I'm sorry."
Jay took a deep breath, "It's what we signed up for, quite literally. I don't know, I'm terrified, but he's in really good hands."
"Definitely," Adam handed the phone back, "So," he held back a smirk, "What's his name?"
Jay laughed, "I can't believe you've all waited this long to ask."
"We really didn't want to bother you," Adam started walking down the stairs.
"Blake Henry," Jay said while following him.
Adam grabbed his coat off the end of the stairs and smiled, "Blake Henry Halstead. I love it."
Jay smiled, "Thank you."
"Hey," Adam quickly hugged him, "I'm really happy for you, honestly, and I can't wait to meet the little guy."
"Hopefully soon," Jay nodded.
"You two taking off work for a while then?" Adam asked, his hand on the doorknob.
Jay sighed, "Yeah, I think so. At least we're both probably going to take off the next week or two together and then might take turns from there until he's home. Voight and Platt have been surprisingly cool with it."
"What's surprising?" Adam raised an eyebrow, "Those two are considering themselves honorary grandparents. Enough so that I want to be there when you tell Voight when you tell him you named your son after him."
Jay chuckled and nodded, "I can do that."
"See you soon?" Adam opened the door.
"Don't ask dumb questions," Jay smirked.
Adam rolled his eyes, "Night, Jay."
"Goodnight," Jay chuckled and watched Adam walk to his car before shutting the front door and heading back up to Drew's room.
Hailey still had Drew on her lap on the bed and was rubbing his back while slowly rocking him.
"How's he doing?" Jay asked softly and knelt next to them on the floor.
"We're getting there," Hailey weakly smiled.
Jay nodded and set his hand on Drew's leg, "Bud, how're you doing? What's going through your head?"
Drew shook his head and tightened his arms around Hailey.
"I'm glad you're not crying anymore," Jay said softly.
Hailey kissed the top of Drew's head, "He's been doing a really good job. He didn't scratch at all, Dad."
Jay smiled as she called him 'Dad' and moved to sit on Drew's other side on the bed, "Not at all? Wow, I'm super proud."
Drew mumbled into Hailey's neck.
"Honey, we can't hear you," Hailey breathed.
Drew sniffled and looked up at Jay with red eyes, "Do you like him?"
"The baby?" Jay asked.
Drew nodded and wiped his nose with the back of his hand.
"Yeah," Jay smiled, "And I think you'll like him too."
"Dad has a lot of pictures on his phone," Hailey lightly patted Drew's back over the blanket wrapped around him, "Do you want to see him?"
"I think so," Drew whimpered.
Jay opened his phone, "Let's see, well, this is him in his crib."
"That's like my fish tank," Drew said.
Jay chuckled, "Yeah, I guess it is."
"Why?" Drew asked.
Hailey took a deep breath, "It's to keep him safe since he's so sick."
"Right," Drew whispered. He hesitantly took Jay's phone and zoomed in on the picture squinting his eyes, "Does he have black hair like me?"
Jay smiled, "Yeah, he does. It's pretty soft too. Not as curly as yours though."
"Well, he can't have everything," Drew scrolled through the pictures. He stopped at the name card that was placed on the incubator, "Blake Henry Halstead? Who's that?"
Hailey laughed softly, "That's him. We named the baby Blake."
"Huh," Drew slowly nodded, "Will you change my name too when I'm adopted?"
"What're you talking about?" Jay asked, "I thought you wanted your last name to be Halstead."
"But does that mean you have to change my first name too? I kinda like being called Drew," Drew shrugged.
"Oh, no," Hailey shook her head, "When we adopt you, we'll only change your last name. Blake didn't have any name at all since he's brand new to the world, so we named him ourselves."
"And why isn't his name Buzz?" Drew raised his eyebrows and looked between Hailey and Jay, "I thought we agreed that this baby's name was Buzz. Why don't you name another baby 'Blake?'"
"Listen," Jay cleared his throat, "Mom and I think Buzz is a really good name, but we also think that Buzz is a much better nickname than real name. Sort of like how I call you 'buddy' or Mr. Kevin always calls you 'little man.'"
"So people can have two names?" Drew asked.
"Yes," Hailey nodded.
"Hmm. Like how your name is 'Detective Hailey' and 'Mom?'" Drew looked at her.
Hailey smiled, "Correct."
"I guess that's fine then," Drew sighed, "Okay. Well, looks like I have a Blake now. It's good enough."
Jay laughed, "I'm glad you approve."
"When can I meet him?" Drew rubbed his eyes and yawned, "I'm free tomorrow."
"Excuse me?" Hailey tilted his chin up to look him in the eyes, "You are not free tomorrow."
"School's optional," Drew shrugged, "Remember, I didn't go last week and I'm still super smart. Watch this – seven minus four is three and three plus seven is ten and ten minus six is four and four plus three is seven. It's like a big circle. Only kids with big brains can do that."
Jay watched amused before shaking his head, "You didn't go last week because you were in big trouble. You're going to school this week. It is not optional."
Drew's jaw dropped, "But you skipped work! You spent the entire day with Buzz – I mean, with Blake," he rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, "That's not fair."
"One, we are adults," Hailey said, "Two, we are allowed to miss work because we had a baby and that's the law. Three, you will meet Blake this weekend, we promise."
Jay nodded, "We want to make sure you're perfectly clean and healthy because your big germs would be too powerful for his tiny body."
Hailey laughed softly and shook her head.
Drew stared at Jay before sighing and getting off of Hailey, "I'll need to confirm that, but fine." He crawled under the covers and curled up into a small ball.
Hailey rubbed his back, "Do you feel better now that you know more about what's going on?"
"Yeah," Drew looked back at her, "I'm okay. I'm really tired though."
Jay nodded, "It's way past your bedtime."
Drew yawned, "Now I understand why I need to go to sleep at 8:30pm. I'm going to be too tired to go to school tomorrow."
"You'll be fine," Hailey kissed the top of his head, "Goodnight, sweetheart."
"Goodnight," Drew closed his eyes and hugged his dinosaur to his chest.
"We love you," Jay said softly while standing up.
Drew smiled and pulled the covers over himself.
Jay chuckled and walked out with Hailey.
Hailey shut the door and grabbed Jay's hand.
"Hmm?" he turned and yawned himself.
Hailey stared at him and took a deep breath. She smiled shaking her head and looked at the ground.
"You okay?" Jay asked, squeezing her hand.
Hailey nodded and hugged him tightly.
Jay wrapped his arms around her and set his chin on her head.
"We make a good team," Hailey whispered.
Jay smiled, "The best," he kissed the top of her head.
Hailey waited a minute before saying, "Carry me to bed?"
Jay laughed and picked her up, "Only because I think you're cute."
"How convenient, I think you're cute too," Hailey kissed his jaw while he carried her to their room.
Saturday morning at 6am on the dot, Drew burst into Hailey and Jay's room. He flicked on their light and jumped on the bed already fully dressed.
Jay gasped as Drew's knee connected with his stomach.
"It's my turn to meet Blake!" Drew yelled.
Hailey groaned and covered her head with her pillow, "Drew. It's too early."
"No, it's Saturday," Drew climbed over Jay and shook Hailey's shoulders, "Wake up! You said you'll take me to see Buzz today!"
"You're hurting me," Jay mumbled and rubbed his stomach, "Why're you so boney?"
"I'm a child," Drew said and pulled at Hailey's pillow, "Mom. Mom. Mom."
"Drew," Hailey finally snapped, "Stop. We are not leaving for at least," she looked at her phone and her eyes narrowed, "It's 6am."
"It's a good time," Drew nodded.
"Hey, bud," Jay rolled out of bed and quickly picked up Drew, "Let's go lay in your room for a little bit."
"No," Drew whined, "It's Saturday."
"I know, but you're really annoying Mom," Jay said while carrying Drew back to his room.
"This isn't fair," Drew groaned, "I want to meet Blake."
Jay dropped Drew on his mattress, "And you will," he bent down to pull out the trundle then laid on it, "You just have to wait a few hours. Mom and I are tired."
"Why?" Drew leaned over the side of his bed to look down at Jay, "We all went to bed at 8:30pm. That's nine and a half hours ago; plenty of time to sleep. Did you know people really only need eight hours, so you got extra time."
Jay remembered how he and Hailey definitely did not go to sleep right at 8:30pm like Drew and how they'd actually spent a good amount of time planning his birthday for the next week before really not sleeping…twice. He closed his eyes and turned on his side, "We were busy, so please let us sleep a little longer."
"I guess adults don't have a bedtime like kids," Drew sighed and laid back on his pillow. He stared up at the ceiling, "I'm not tired right now."
"Close your eyes and pretend to sleep," Jay mumbled.
"I'm wearing jeans," Drew said.
"Take them off," Jay yawned.
Drew huffed and glanced down at Jay. He did look really tired and maybe he did hurt him while climbing onto the bed earlier. Drew sighed and turned onto his back. He decided the best way to pass time would be to count all the stars on his ceiling. He's done it before, so he already knew there were 38, but it did help him when he was bored.
Hailey walked into Drew's room two hours later and laughed softly at Jay asleep on the small trundle next to Drew's bed. Drew was hanging half off the bed staring at him as he slept and lightly touching his hair.
"Good morning," Hailey whispered.
Drew looked up with a smile, "Is it time?"
Hailey nodded and walked across the room to open the blinds.
Drew jumped off his bed right onto Jay's side, "Wake up! Mom said it's time!"
Jay groaned and rolled onto his back, "Stop jumping on me."
"It's time to get up and go see Blake!" Drew shook Jay's shoulders, "Let's go!"
"Whoa, hold on," Hailey quickly lifted Drew off of Jay, "Dad and I need to shower and get ready first and we all need to eat breakfast."
Drew sighed, "Why?"
"Because that's what you do in the morning," Jay sat up while rubbing his face.
Drew rolled his eyes, "Fine, whatever," he marched out of the room downstairs.
"He's such a light in my life," Jay said while standing.
Hailey laughed and set a hand on his back while they walked out, "Feeling okay? He was really beating you up this morning."
"Yeah, I'm fine," Jay said. Once in their room, he shut the door and pulled his pajamas off, "I've had worse."
Hailey winced as her eyes trailed across the scars littered on just his front.
Jay kissed her head while walking past her into the bathroom.
Hailey took a deep breath and followed him.
Drew was bouncing on the balls of his feet the entire walk up to the NICU, "I'm excited! You'll take pictures of me, right?"
Jay chuckled and nodded, "Yes, we will."
"Okay," Hailey set her hand on the door, "You need to be quiet while we walk in, all right? These babies are all really small, so we can't be loud."
Drew nodded, "Got it."
Hailey smiled and took his other hand while they walked through the doors and to the back where Blake was.
Natalie looked up from his incubator as they made their way over, "Hey."
"Hey, what're you doing here?" Jay smiled.
"Just thought I'd check in on everyone's favorite patient before I got pulled into the craziness of the ED," Natalie shrugged with a smile.
"We appreciate it," Hailey said, "Drew's ready to meet his brother."
"Do you want to hold him?" Natalie asked.
"Um," Drew went on his tiptoes, "I don't know. I think I just want to look right now."
The three of them walked closer to Natalie and Drew's eyes immediately widened. He froze in his spot at the sight of the baby connected to the monitors and tubes.
"It's okay," Jay said softly and reached into the incubator to gently touch Blake's hand, "He needs all of this to help him breathe and eat."
Hailey nodded and rubbed Drew's back, "Do you want to touch him too?"
"No," Drew stepped back, "I-I don't think that's a good idea."
"I think it would be," Natalie offered, "He already knows what your Mom and Dad feel like, he should meet you too."
Drew shook his head quickly, "He's smaller than I thought."
"What if Mom holds him and you and I watch?" Jay suggested.
"Um, that might be okay," Drew said.
"Okay, let's do that," Natalie smiled. Hailey brought Drew to the two recliners and sat in one of them while Jay helped Natalie make sure nothing got tangled as they brought Blake over.
Drew stood to Hailey's side and watched Natalie place Blake in Hailey's arms.
Hailey immediately smiled and visibly softened, "Hi, baby boy. How're you doing today? Mommy missed you so much."
Jay smiled as well and sat in the other recliner, "Good morning, Blake. We brought Blake with us today, just like we said we would."
Drew bit his lip, "You told him about me?"
"Of course," Jay reached over and gently pulled Drew onto his lap, "We told him how smart and nice you are."
"And funny," Hailey added.
Jay nodded, "And we told him that you're going to teach him all about dinosaurs and birds."
Drew smiled slightly, "I can do that."
"I know," Jay lightly squeezed him, "We even told him you want to call him 'Buzz.'"
Drew's smile widened, "What'd he think of that?"
"I think he's excited about it," Hailey tilted Blake up, "What do you think, Blake? Do you like the name Buzz?"
Blake blinked his eyes a couple times and stretched out in Hailey's arms.
"His eyes are like Mom's," Drew leaned closer, "Does he have hair like Dad?"
Jay chuckled, "Well, no. His hair doesn't look like mine and a lot of babies have blue eyes when they're born."
Natalie nodded, "So maybe they'll stay like your mom's or they could change," she lowered her voice, "But I think you'll think this is cool," she gently took off the blue hat on Blake's head.
"Hey, you were right," Drew slipped off Jay's lap and walked around, "He really does have hair like me."
"Just a little bit," Hailey smiled, "It's really soft; want to touch it?"
Drew looked to Jay who nodded, "Go for it."
Drew hesitantly reached out and stroked his finger across Blake's head. He laughed quietly and bent down to put his face right above Blake's, "Hi, my name's Drew and I think it's pretty cool that you're in my family."
Jay let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding and rubbed his face in relief. Hailey laughed and shook her head, ecstatic that Drew had finally relaxed.
"Don't worry, I won't do that to you a lot," Drew said, "I don't really like when people touch my hair, so I won't do it to you."
"That's nice of you," Hailey said softly.
Drew stared at Blake, "So what are all these things for?"
Natalie pointed out his heart monitor and feeding and oxygen tubes. Drew nodded along and whispered each one to himself as Natalie taught him what everything meant. When she finished, Drew crossed his arms and nodded one last time, "I've got it. So when can we take him home?"
"Oh, bud, no," Jay said, "We can't take him home for a few weeks. He needs to stay here and grow and get healthy."
"Well that's stupid," Drew dropped his hands to his sides, "I'm not even sorry for saying a bad word."
Hailey smiled sadly, "I know it is."
"But we have to remember that this is the right thing," Jay said.
"I guess," Drew sighed and looked back at Blake, "Sorry, Buzz."
"Do you want to hold him yet?" Hailey asked.
"Not at all," Drew walked back to sit on Jay's lap, "I'll just look at him."
"Are you sure? I can help you," Jay lightly bounced Drew on his knee.
"No, I can't," Drew shook his head.
"Think you could hold him with one arm?" Natalie asked Jay.
"Um," Jay glanced to Blake and took a deep breath, "Maybe?"
Hailey smiled, "I like that idea," she looked down at Blake and whispered, "Want Daddy to hold you and Drew?"
"Well if you call me 'Daddy,' you know I can't resist," Jay chuckled.
"Oh, no," Drew watched Hailey carefully stand with Natalie's guidance, "I-I don't know. This is making me nervous."
"It's okay," Hailey said softly and placed Blake in the crook of Jay's arm, "There we go," she adjusted one of his monitors and smiled, "All happy."
Jay laughed as Blake seemed to smile, "You like that? I like holding you too."
Drew chewed his lip, "He's really close to me."
"It's okay," Hailey squatted in front of him, "How about you hold his hand?"
"No, cause it has that IV in it," Drew shook his head.
"Hold his foot then," Jay said, "That's what I usually do when Mom's holding him."
Drew took a deep breath and shakily touched Blake's foot, "It's little."
Hailey nodded, "He's a tiny baby."
Drew stayed quiet for a while as Jay and Hailey cooed over Blake until the baby started trembling against Jay. He shot off of Jay's lap and stood to the side.
"Hey, hey, shh," Jay whispered and easily transferred Blake to rest up against his chest, "You're okay. We're all here."
Natalie heard the monitor beeping and came back over, "Everything okay?"
"I…" Hailey shakily took a deep breath, "He's shaking again."
Natalie nodded and placed a hand on Blake's back, "Just keep holding him. You're doing a really good job."
"It never gets easier watching," Hailey breathed.
Natalie set a hand on her arm, "I don't know if it ever will, but hopefully he'll grow out of it by the time you take him home."
Jay kissed Blake's forehead, "It makes me angry."
"I know," Natalie shook her head, "It's not fair."
"Why is it happening?" Drew squeaked.
Hailey turned to look at him and put her hand out, "Come here."
Drew shakily walked to her and hugged her.
Hailey was shocked at first than wrapped her arms around him, "It's part of Blake being sick. Sometimes he shakes like that and he can't control it and we really can't stop it either."
Jay nodded, "So we just have to hold him and keep him real close."
Drew rubbed his eyes and nodded a little.
Blake started making quiet noises against Jay who patted his back, "I know. It's scary, but it'll be over soon."
"He's scared too?" Drew asked.
"Probably," Hailey rubbed his back.
Drew sniffled and went to stand next to Jay. He watched Blake for a minute before taking his tiny hand and placing it above Jay's heart.
Hailey wiped her eyes and tried not to cry as she made eye contact with Jay.
Natalie smiled sadly, "Why're you doing that, Drew?"
"It's what I have to do when I'm scared," Drew said quietly, "It'll help him soon." He started whispering in Blake's ear and Jay chuckled.
"Hmm?" Hailey sat on the arm of the recliner.
"He's counting," Jay breathed.
Hailey smiled and wiped her face again, "He's a good big brother."
Drew smiled at her as he continued counting under his breath.
"The best," Jay nodded. Hailey ran her hand over his hair as they both watched Drew take care of Blake the best way he could.
