Chapter 27: Reunion
One Week Later
Nia hummed to herself as she placed the last book on the shelf. It had been a week since the fighting between the two gangs had ended and Rex had come to. The doctors were baffled at how Rex had come back, but everyone agreed that he was just lucky. Ever since the fighting had ended, Nia, Pyra, and Mythra had become fast friends, and all of them began to volunteer at the local bookshop, where the three of them currently were. However, Rex had to stay in the hospital a little longer for his body to get back it's strength, since the blood loss had made him very weak.
"Nia?" A voice pulled Nia out of her thoughts.
"Sorry, what was that?" Nia asked.
Mythra sighed. She was currently sitting on a pile of boxes nearby where Pyra and Nia were currently shelving books. "I said, I'm going to see concert downtown with Morag and Brighid. Do you want to come?"
"Sorry Mythra. I think I'll stay." Nia said.
"Fine. Well, bye." With that, Mythra left.
Pyra turned to Nia. "Why did you choose to stay? You would probably have more fun watching some Justin Bieber wannabe that staying here with me."
"Big crowds make me nervous." Nia stated.
"Same here." Pyra said.
Both of them fell silent for a few moments, neither saying anything.
"Are you thinking about Rex. too?" Pyra asked quietly.
Nia nodded. "I can't think of anyone else."
"Why are you worried?" Pyra asked.
"Well, I know that he's going to be all right, but I still wonder when he's going to be able to get out of the hospital, I mean, I know he lost a lot of blood, but it's been a week, damnit. I just hope he comes back soon."
"Me too." Pyra said, and both of them went quiet again.
From behind them, they both heard the door open. But instead of hearing whoever come in head to the other bookshelves, they heard the footsteps get closer to them. Suddenly, Nia heard an all-too familiar voice say, "Nia?"
Nia turned around and gasped. Standing right in front of her was Rex. For anyone who looked at him, nobody would guess that a week before, he had been stabbed in the chest.
"Oh, come on," Rex said. "Don't act so sur-"
Rex was cut off Nia ran forward, threw her arms around his neck, and shoved her lips against his.
Rex has taken a little bit aback, but he warped his arms around her waist all the same.
Pyra cleared her through. "This is really nice and all, but we are in a public bookstore."
Nia stepped away from Rex and looked at Pyra. "Sorry. Pyra, would you mind if-"
Pyra cut her off. "Don't worry, I'll cover for you. Go with Rex. you deserve it."
Nia smiled. "Thanks, Pyra."
Pyra watched as Rex and Nia left the shop, hand in hand. And she couldn't help but feel happy for them.
