Chapter 26

Dandelionstream glanced at Flintlash, who was wracked with worry. "The kits are in trouble. I know it,"

He was talking about his kits.

"How do you know?" She asked distractedly.

"Because I can," He snapped.

Dandelionstream looked up at the sky. It was sun-set, which meant they had about an hour of walking left.

"Ill visit the camp and see the kits in my dreams," She promised her worried son.

Flintlash just nodded. They were walking on rolling hills, uninhabited by Twolegs. Only birds, squirrels, and maybe a fox.

"We should tell stories," Oatclaw said abruptly. "I hate this silence,"

Everyone agreed.

"I'll go first," Spikenose said. "I'll tell the story of Blackkit. I used to make up stories about him when I was a kit. So, Blackkit wanted to be the best warrior, but his sister, Waterkit, wanted to be a medicine cat.

"Only one problem: Their mother, Whitefang, wouldn't let Waterkit be a medicine cat. So Waterkit, with the help of Blackkit, sneaks away to a remote part of the forest with Steamheart, the medicine cat.

"But Blackkit knew they were going to be caught. And one-day they were.

Whitefang begged Treestar to delay the apprenticeships of Blackkit and Waterkit. She also asked for Steamheart to be punished. And on tp of that, she asked for Waterkit not to be a medicine cat apprentice.

"All Treestar said no to. "Steamheart needs a new apprentice," Treestar would say. "Now stop deciding the future of your kits!"

Spikenose looked around. "Thats all I got," He said.

Dandelionstream smiled. "Lovely,"

It was too dark to travel, and they were looking for a place to stay.

"Who are you?" A harsh voice demanded.

All the cats spun around. The cat glaring at them was a red-orange she-cat with a brown muzzle and tail.

"I said, who are you?"

Dandelionstream spoke up. "We're just passing by, looking for a place to stay for the night,"

The red cat stood for a long time, thinking.

"What are your names?" She asked ruffly.

"My name is Dandelionstream, this is my mate, Oatclaw, and these are my kits, Spikenose and Flintlash,"

There was a long pause. The she-cat seemed to be measuring something, before muttering, "I guess you could stay here for the night,"

"What's. your name?" Oatclaw asked.

"Cherrypool," She said.

Oatclaw nodded.

The group followed Cherrypool to a pile of wood. There was an opening, marked strongly with Cherrypool's scent. Inside was big enough for all five of them, which was a shock. When they all settled, every cat went to sleep.

Dandelionstream woke up before anyone else. She decided to hunt. A squirrel was easy to find, and she tracked it. The squirrel was nibbling a nut. Dandelionstream crept closer...closer...and...POUNCE. But her belly was so large, it slowed her down and the squirrel got away. Cursing under her breath, she went back to the pile of sticks.

"How are you?" Oatclaw asked.

Dandelionstream muttered something at him, before flopping on her nest, a bad mood settling over her like angry fog.

Cherrypool sat down beside her. Dandelionstream glanced up. Instead of the bad-tempered cat she had seen yesterday, she saw a cat who was haunted by her past and was running from something. Dandelionstream glanced away, annoyed.

"This is your second litter of kits? At your age, I thought this would be your first," Cherrypool gave her a curious look.

"I had kits early," Dandelionstream snapped.

"So, why are you traveling?" Cherrypool asked softly.

Dandelionstream looked up. "We have to find someone," She answered, using the shortened version.

Cherrypool nodded. "Why?"

"We have to save our group of cats from this cat,"

Cherrypool nodded."Do you know who this cat is?"

Dandelionstream sighed. "Sort of. A prophecy saying good is bad, and bad is good, plus a dream I keep having."

Cherrypool was quiet. "What dream?"

Dandelionsream yawned. "Something about pools of cherry,"

Dandelionstream's head snapped. The two cats looked at each other.

Pools of cherries. Cherry Pools. Cherrypool.

Cliff-hanger!
