a little note before we begin, this chapter focuses on the Rizzoli clan. Others are mentioned in the chapter but it's mainly focused on them. story development and all. I hope you enjoy though, some answers to questions you might have shall be answered, possibly.
Tommy was surprised to get a phone call from Jane, especially saying that she wanted to get to know him better and wanted to invite him to the Dirty Robber, said Frankie was going to tag along. She said she didn't like the distance they both felt with Tommy. He was hesitant to go because he had told Frank where they went for an early dinner so he could only imagine the talk was going to be a set up.
He took it upon himself to get to the bar a little early, maybe the night would go well if he got some drinks in. When he arrived he was surprised to see his mother working. She didn't look good when he left her place earlier in the day, she looked a little better in the moment but not by much. "Hey Ma... I am honestly surprised to see you working tonight."
Angela just smiled at her youngest child, "It's sweet of you to worry, but I feel much better, got some energy back. So how have you been? We didn't really talk about anything today except me. I'm still trying to figure out what went on at the bar the other day. You know the night when you and Barry Frost had a talk. I didn't know you boys were friends."
"I'm not even sure if I could consider us friends, maybe just acquaintances," Tommy shrugged, Frost and him hardly interacted since that night. Tommy had a hard time figuring what it was about. "He doesn't really say much."
"You seem kind of upset about that sweetie," Angela looked at her son in concern.
"Ma you really don't have to worry about it, okay? Can I please just have a beer?" he spoke frustrated, and confused, not really knowing what the hell was going on with him and Frost. If there even was anything.
Angela just nodded, handing him a beer, "I just worry."
"I know why you're doing this Ma, your other two kids are happy so you don't have to worry about them as much anymore. Sometimes I think you try too hard," Tommy sipped at his beer.
"I will always worry about all of you kids, that hasn't changed."
"You worry too much." Tommy just sighed and stood up from his stool, "I'm going to go sit at a table, when Jane and Frankie come just let them know I'm here," he took his beer and walked away.
Angela frowned she knew there was something bothering her son, but his words still stung. She was at a loss of how to help him.
"Hey Ma," Jane greeted, Frankie in tow. She noticed her mom look concerned. "Are you well enough to be working? You looking kind of pale."
Angela looked up at her older kids, "Hey kids, I'm fine. Tommy's already here, he seems to be in a mood."
"Did he say why?" Frankie asked.
"I just mentioned something and it seemed to tick him off. Maybe you kids can find out what's going on, no wonder why you two are the detectives. I have no idea what's going on anymore it seems." She sighed giving her kids their beers.
"It's going to be alright Ma. He's hard to read, which is why we invited him out, maybe see what is going on in his mind," Jane patted her mom's hand. "We know you worry about him, we do too. You're a good mother."
Angela just smiled, "Thanks I needed that. You kids go talk, if you need anything just wave me over."
"Will do Ma," Jane and Frankie nodded before going to sit at Tommy's table. "Hey Tommy."
"Hi Jane, did you have a nice vacation with Maura?"
"Yeah, it was good something we both really needed. So how have you been doing? Last I seen you was Christmas Day, right?"
Tommy nodded, "Yeah. I've been alright. Just got a lot going on in my mind. Pop has kind of been drifting apart from me, which has been pretty odd. I assume you guys met Lydia today?"
Jane nodded and Frankie shook his head, "I already met her, she works at the cafe Ma used to work at. You introduced them together I heard. Why would you do that, she's my age Tommy. And she's actually getting married to him."
Tommy sighed and slumped his shoulders, "When I met her I tried to get with her but she says she only dates older men, she asked if I knew someone and I told her about Pop. I seen how happy Ma is with Korsak, he's a great guy, anyways I just wanted Pop to be happy. But then he starts to blow me off after he proposes to her."
Jane and Frankie turned to each other and back to their brother. They knew how strong his bond was with Frank, maybe this why Tommy was acting weird. He defended their dad so many times and then this is how he repays him. "How long have they been together?"
"About six months. I didn't think it would get serious, we kind of had an argument about it. He proposed a few weeks ago, before Christmas and then I hardly spoken to him. I talked to him on Christmas Day, I'm sorry I made a fuss about you guys not giving him a chance. I was just trying to convince myself that he was still a pretty decent guy. That he still wanted to be involved in our lives. We only talked today when I wished him Happy New Year's. I thought maybe you guys should meet her and maybe make Pop see that he was making a huge mistake."
Jane and Frankie listened to Tommy explain what has been going on. Maybe they didn't need an intervention after all. Jane reached over to grab Tommy's hand. "I'm sorry I gave your grief about still wanting to give Pop a chance. He hardly put up a fight at the restaurant. He looked defeated. He told me before he wants to try and make progress, but I doubt that's going to happen, he hasn't made any effort after he comes to tell me that he will."
"Pop's an asshole," Frankie drank his beer. "I'm sorry you feel abandoned by him. It's not right of how he makes any of us feel. Now you realize why we didn't care to make any efforts right? He will just abandon everyone, I mean look how easily he just dropped you."
Tommy gripped his beer, "Is this talk supposed to make me feel any better?"
"We all felt like crap because of how Pop treated us. The feeling doesn't get any better that's why I try to treat him like he doesn't exist. See how he likes being abandoned. I try not to worry about him, I'm actually happy in life and would hate to get dragged back into Pop's shit," Jane squeezed his hand and let go. "Just remember that we all have each other, no matter what."
Frankie nodded, "Yeah, just because he doesn't realize what he's missing doesn't mean we shouldn't miss out on each other."
Tommy smiled at his siblings, "It's just going to get me some getting used to, but knowing you guys are here it means more than you'll probably ever realize."
"Is it me or is it getting really emotional over here?" Jane smiled standing up. "I'm going to get more drinks and see how Ma is doing," she let them know before leaving to the bar.
Frankie looked at Tommy, "I'm glad we had this talk Tommy. I hate how dad treated you after everything you've done for him."
Tommy nodded, looking at his empty beer bottle. "Yeah, the um reason Pop and me had this fight is because well... He wants to talk to Ma about making it so their marriage is annulled not have it be a divorce. Something about not being able to get married in a Catholic church. I don't want Jane to know because she'd flip the fuck out and I don't want Ma knowing about it because well, she doesn't look like she's doing well."
Frankie clenched his jaw at Tommy's words, "But you're telling me?"
"You're more level headed than Jane, you know this. I just didn't want you being in the dark. Can we keep this between us? At least until Ma goes to the doctor next week, I don't want her to have more to worry about," Tommy glanced over to their mother.
Frankie nodded, "Alright but only because I won't say anything. So one more thing, are you going to tell Jane about... you know."
Tommy sighed and shrugged. "I don't know. I don't even know what's going on with that. Frost has been distant and I swear I don't know how to help, I'm not even sure I know what I'm feeling. Or can even guess what Frost is feeling. I don't think he trusts me yet. How was he when you guys went out for dinner?"
Frankie shrugged, "Quiet, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's about you. Maybe he's scared to do something because he's scared of how Jane will react. Maybe he's just confused and doesn't know how to speak it verbally." Frankie heard Jane walk back over so he stopped talking about Frost.
Jane looked between her brothers before giving them another beer. "Geez don't stop talking on my behalf," she sat down.
"We were just planning something, it's top secret," Tommy lied.
"Like what?" Jane asked and turned to her other brother. "Planning what?"
"Fine I'll tell you," Frankie said he could think quicker on his feet. "You and Maura and Ma and Korsak never had an engagement party, we're trying to work out the details."
Jane smirked, "How kind of you, to make up that lie. Now I expect a party, but I know that's not what you guys were talking about. Remember I'm a detective and I could read Tommy's facial expressions from the bar, he looked confused. You guys really don't have to hide things from me."
"There's nothing to be hiding," Frankie shrugged, and Jane eyed her brother.
"I see, well don't tell me. I'm just trying to get to know my little brother."
Tommy took a deep sigh, his hand rubbing the back of his neck. "Can't know me if I hardly know what's going on myself Janie."
Jane leaned back and played with her beer bottle, "You know, when I realized I had feelings for Maura I had this confusion and I wasn't sure if whatever I felt for her was real or not, or if it was feelings at all. But then I embraced them and look how that turned out."
"Well you two are best friends so it probably wasn't a struggle going from friends to more than that. You guys just felt comfortable already, according to Giovanni, you've been really friendly to each other when he tried to date Maura."
"He actually told you about that? Maura admitted that was the first time she realized she was in love with me that was more than a year ago. So you are struggling with feelings for a friend that you aren't really close to?"
Tommy frowned at his sister, "You fuckin tricked me Jane, that's not polite."
Jane smirked, "They don't call me Boston PD's best detective for nothing. And I wasn't going to come out and just ask if you were, you know," Jane thought back to her conversation with Frankie about Tommy might being gay.
"Jane I don't know what I am, okay? It's not like I've been with guys before, and I only kissed this friend and nothing else has come from it. I swear."
Jane nodded, "That's how I started out, heated argument with Maura then I kissed her and then I was avoiding her, trying to figure shit out, even though I tried to ignore it at first. We might be more alike than we'd like to think there Tommy. Things might take a while for you to figure out, but at least you know you have feelings. They are a bitch by the way."
"That they are..." Tommy sighed. "I guess I shouldn't feel afraid to talk to you about this. I don't want to out him though, he's probably not even gay, but I sadly can't say who it is."
Jane nodded, "I understand, give you guys some privacy, it probably isn't nice to be outed. I wouldn't want to make your loverboy uncomfortable."
Tommy groaned, "God don't call him that. I told you it was just one kiss, and I was drunk off my ass by the way."
"Is he hot?" Jane asked.
"Jane!" Frankie and Tommy both shouted out to their sister.
"What? I'm just asking, looks don't matter but I mean look at the girls we got Tommy, us Rizzoli siblings have hot romantic partners."
"Let's just say he's not your type," Tommy leaned back.
"Of course he's not my type, no one is, just Maura. I mean fuck you've both hit on her before. I'm just glad I'm the one who landed her. She's mine for keeps now, thanks for respecting my relationship." They just drank their beer and Jane just observed them. "Wait, Frankie, you know who it is, don't you? Our conversation earlier when you hinted that you might know he might be into guys and you and Tommy having a secret conversation which I cracked what it was about. You know."
Frankie shrugged, "Maybe I do, maybe I don't. I'm not at liberty to say."
Jane just rolled her eyes, "I just asked to know if I was the only one left in the dark. I have been gone for a few days, a lot could have happened when I left."
Tommy took a long hard gulp of beer, finishing off his beer before he received a phone call. He looked at the caller ID and then to his siblings. "I have to take this, I'll be right back." Jane watched as he youngest brother left to go talk outside.
"You know, to be honest I wasn't even sure Tommy had friends," Jane told Frankie. "But seriously though, is he hot?"
Frankie just shrugged, "He's not my type per say, but I wouldn't kick him out of bed... if he offered."
"I don't think Gwen would appreciate that comment."
"It doesn't even feel like a real relationship. Not like I really know what that feels like to have."
"You guys seem comfortable around each other, at least you did at dinner what happened between then and now?"
Frankie frowned, "Isn't it get to know our little brother evening, not badgering me about my relationship?"
Jane raised her eyebrow in suspicion, "Yeah but now I think something is bothering you."
"You're not going to let this go, you're worse than Ma sometimes. But fine, but if Tommy comes back before I get done talking I won't discuss it anymore. Gwen and I were trying to figure out why Frost has been so down lately. He seems pretty alright when it's just me and him hanging out but I brought up that I got a vibe that maybe he doesn't really approve of my relationship with her or maybe he feels that me being with her takes the time away from our friendship. All of that could be a factor. I know he had an attraction to her, but he knows he can talk to me. But then she made a comment about Frost's possible feelings and I claimed how impossible it could be..." Frankie stopped himself.
Jane nodded, listening to her brother, "Did you just realize something or is that how it ends?"
"Shit, maybe she wasn't wrong... Jane, can we please talk about something else?" Frankie looked at her sister.
Jane sat up straight, "I-alright... Tommy is coming back anyways," she nodded towards their younger brother coming back to the table. "Was that your friend?"
"Yeah, it was," Tommy sat down not saying anything else, drinking his beer. Frankie and Jane looked at him in concern. Tommy avoided eye contact with them.
"Are you alright?" Frankie asked, concerned.
"Me, yeah, he says he's confused and his feelings are all jumbled up in his head. He doesn't know how it happened or why it happened. He needs time to think what it is that he wants. He doesn't want to hurt me in the process. Someone mentioned it was concerning them of how he was acting, that he might have feelings for someone else. And it kind of threw him for a loop. Like someone else had an idea of what was going on and they probably just put ideas in his head. Like he wasn't distant and upset enough already," Tommy ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "I sure know how to pick 'em."
Jane listened to the way Tommy explained what happened, he didn't use names so it was a little hard to follow and she also recalled how Frankie was just telling her what he and Gwen were trying to figure out what was up with Frost and he stopped short. Jane looked at her brothers, trying to think of what was going on, when it suddenly hit her. "Holy shit!" Frankie and Tommy both look at Jane as she had her outburst. She stood up and gave her brothers some cash to pay her for beer. "I just thought of something I needed to do," Jane spoke, leaving the Dirty Robber after waving goodbye to Angela. She needed to go talk to Frost.
