A/N: I want to say thank you to all the amazing commenters, kudo-ers, and readers who have stuck with the story this long. The positive comments especially have brought some much-needed relief on various chapters I had agonized over.
Raven woke in the infirmary, the strong scent of disinfectant reminding her of home and bringing a vague sense of familiarity.
She'd been here a few times over the years, usually to receive vaccines and such. She was in the lab facility where her parents worked. They'd always insisted looking after Raven's well-being personally. They'd always been extremely protective of their daughter.
Raven blinked her eyes against the harsh light reflecting off the bright white walls. That's one thing she always hated about the place. It was just always so… bright and bare. But she was safe at least. So, she didn't let it bother her.
Once her eyes adjusted and the sting from the overhead lighting set aside, she looked around, wondering where everyone was. The past night's events came rushing back to her. Where was Gaia? And Lincoln? What happened to Luna and Echo? Where were her parents, and when were they going to answer the million questions in her head?
Raven tried to sit up only to fall back against the soft hospital sheets. Her chest was tight and still as painful as ever. She lifted the thin layer hugging her torso to peek at her bandage-wrapped body. She was upset to learn she still couldn't move her right leg.
She hoped her moms had a plan to fix that.
Speaking of her moms, both Doctors Peri and Becca suddenly entered the room, doors swinging and shutting with an audible creak as they hurried inside, each moving to stand either side of Raven's bed.
"Good, you're awake," Becca breathed, relief leaking into her words as she placed a warm hand on Raven's non-IV arm and smiled. These warm moments with Becca were rare. It was usually Peri who gave the loving touches. A weak smile pulled at Raven's lips as she revelled in the contact.
"Hey," Raven started, surprised at the hoarse throaty whisper that came out of her. How long had she been there? "How long—"
"A few days," Peri answered before Raven could finish. "You're lucky we found you in time. You were half dead, Raven. I don't know what we'd do if we lost you."
With a lot of wincing, Raven tried to sit up again only to be gently pressed back to the mattress by Becca's hand. Then Peri pressed a button that slowly made the top of the bed raise higher, its hum gentle against Raven's eardrums as she waited for the automated contraption to bring her into a semi-upright sitting position.
"How did you find me? How did you know?"
Becca cocked her head, brows drawn together like Raven should've known the answer to that. "We chipped you, Raven. Don't you remember? When you were a little girl, we put a chip in the back of your neck. You kept pulling out the stitches for weeks."
Raven gaped as she reached two fingers to touch the back of her neck. It took some explorative effort, but there was indeed a subtle but slight bulge beneath the skin at the base of her skull. "Uhm, I'm sorry what? There's a what in my head? What the hell does it do!?"
Peri rested a hand on Raven's shoulder to calm her, being careful not to bump the IV tubing with flowing crimson liquid inside. "It's just for safety, Raven. It measures your vitals, and if you're in trouble, sends us an emergency GPS signal. That's all."
"What the hell were you doing with werewolves!?" Becca burst out of nowhere, apparently unable to contain herself any longer.
Peri gave her wife a scolding look over her thick black frames. "Becca! We talked about this."
Becca shook her head. "I'm sorry I can't wait any longer. I need answers, Raven. What were you thinking? First, you cheat on Clarke with one of those things, then you infect Clarke, then you decide you're going to be one of them?"
Raven threw her hands up in surrender, "Whoa, whoa, hold up. WHAT? How do you know all that, and what do you mean I infected Clarke?"
"Alright, that's it. Out, Becca!" Peri ordered. "You're not helping." Becca opened her mouth to protest but was cut off. "OUT!"
The scene to unfold before Raven was a surprising one. Mom telling off Mama was a new turn of events. Could the day get any weirder?
Once Becca stormed from the room, Peri turned back to Raven. "Okay, honey. Look, I know you have a lot of questions, so let me do my best to explain everything first, then you can ask me to fill in the blanks, alright?"
Raven nodded, her mind swirling with nothing but confusion and endless streams of questions.
"Clarke started exhibiting some odd symptoms a few days ago. Abby ran her own blood test for Clarke at her private clinic. When it came back with abnormalities, she brought Clarke to us."
"Clarke's here?" Raven interrupted.
Peri nodded, "Yes, Raven. She's just in the next room. You can see her later if you like. Anyways, that's when we discovered the abnormality was similar to the werewolf gene."
"How long have you known about werewolves?" Raven still couldn't believe her ears. It had been one hell of a week for new information, but she was trying to remember to be the open-minded person she was raised to be.
Peri shrugged, "For as long as we've lived here. Studying their advanced genetic material helped us with the research for gene editing. Helped with the research to create you, Raven."
Last night, we set out when your vitals showed you going into analeptic shock. First, we chased you across town, past the tracks deep into Polaris Forest, then the GPS tipped us off when you started moving in the other direction into the woods in the city. I'm so sorry it took us so long to get to you, sweetie. We had to go in on foot. I'm guessing you were moved by the one called Luna."
"You know, Luna?"
Peri shook her head. "No, but Mama and I had a long talk with Gaia and Lincoln when we got back. And a Commander Lexa showed up with Clarke long before then. And so did an…" Peri paused with a knowing smile on her face before finishing, "Anya."
Raven smiled back, tears nearly spilling from her eyes. Relief flooded her to know Gaia was alive. And she missed Anya so badly it hurt. After the past couple of days, she didn't think she'd ever see the sexy biker again.
"I like her a lot, Raven. Mama may not be ready for you to be with someone else yet, but between us, I think Anya's much better suited for you than Clarke was. Even if she is a werewolf."
"Holy crap, that's right! Anya is a werewolf, isn't she? That still blows my mind."
Peri gripped Raven's shoulder just then, a look of concern on her brow. "How do you feel about that, Raven?"
Raven stared a moment as she processed everything that happened in the last few days. "You know, what? I don't care what she is. I think I love her, Mom. But is that even possible? I've known her for such a short time."
Peri broke out into a full toothed grin as she sat on the edge of the bed. "That's wonderful, honey. And it's absolutely possible. You know, I fell in love with Mama right from the beginning too."
Raven's brows shot up. "Really?" Somehow she'd always thought Becca had been the cold off-putting scientist from the start.
Peri nodded. "Mmhmm. She was so intelligent and sweet and kind to me. And looked so damn delicious in that white lab coat—"
"Oh, Mom!" Raven whined. "I really don't need to hear how you have the hotts for Mama, okay!? I get it! I get it!"
Peri laughed as she kissed Raven on the forehead again. "Either way, I'm so happy you've found something special with Anya, sweetie. I know the werewolf thing can be scary, but I think she has a good heart. If you love her, even just a little, I think you should see where it goes."
"Thanks, mom," Raven moved to wrap her arms around Peri in a hug but was quickly crippled back to the hospital bed in pain. Instead, Peri placed another loving kiss on her daughter's forehead. "Mom?" Raven said slowly as a question came to mind. "Am I going to turn into one of them?"
Raven still couldn't process how she felt about the possibility.
Peri shook her head and nodded to Raven's IV bags, dark red liquid settled densely against the plastic as gravity steadily flowed the substance through the tubes into Raven's arm.
"We ran a blood transfusion on Clarke, replacing her blood completely and expelling the infected gene successfully. Anya explained to us you can still undergo the change later if that is, in fact, something you want. But there will be pros and cons to whether or not you want to turn, Raven."
Raven arched a brow. "Like what?"
Peri sighed, her gaze falling to her daughter's leg.
Raven's heart sank. "Just tell me. How bad is it, Mom? The truth."
"If you choose to remain as you are, you'll be stuck with the scars and some lifelong struggles, including mobility issues. You'll never be able to move or walk as you once did. Your recovery would be a long one with lots of obstacles."
"And if I… turned?" even just saying the words out loud felt weird on Raven's tongue. "The infection didn't do anything to heal me a few days ago."
"From what I understand from your friends, it's only after you've turned that the healing ability kicks in. Everything would heal completely. But the change would be permanent, Raven. There will be no changing your mind once you go through with it."
Raven took a deep breath. "I don't know what I want to do. I don't think I have enough information to make that kind of decision right now."
Peri nodded, a prideful smile reaching her lips. "That's a very mature answer, sweetie. Why don't you take a few weeks to think it over? Lexa says you have time to decide. And in the meantime, why don't I send Anya in? I'm pretty sure the poor girl is going to explode if we deny her from seeing you any longer."
Raven broke into a smile. She wanted to see Anya just as bad. "Thanks, Mom."
As Peri moved to leave, Raven stopped her, catching the sleeve of the white lab coat between nimble fingers. Peri turned around again with a raised brow.
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
Raven swallowed hard before fixing her mother with a deep stare. "Thanks for giving me my choice back."
A/N: I want to warn all of you that I am getting burnt out. I will update next Thursday since I can't stand the thought of keeping Raven and Anya being apart any longer, but I am planning to take a break sometime this September. I really don't want to rush the ending and would like to expand the fluffy bits I have planned which is why I am planning a writing break.
Thank you for your understanding.
