AUTHOR's NOTE: This is it! The last chapter! I hope everyone enjoys the last bit of my story. Let me know what you think of the story in the reviews.
"Are you afraid, boy?"
"I wouldn't be human if I wasn't."
"I tell you of the destruction that would happen if you continued this senseless journey, yet you still came. I show you pictures of your life in tatters, yet you stand here. I kill your friends and family, yet you show your face. What is your goal?"
"To stop you."
The lizard smiled at the boy's confidence and stepped forward.
"You remind me of myself when I wasn't trapped in this void. In the ancient war against Mewmans and monsters, I was the leader who fought with the monsters against three generations of Butterflies. I was told over and over that I was destined to lose. So I decided to visit the person who controls that destiny."
"Fate…" Marco whispered.
"So I left the resistance in the hands of my brother. I traveled across vast lands in search of Fate. This entity appears to you in different forms and he appeared to me as an old sage named Dovin. He told me a star will take you down the wrong path and leave you in the darkness of the moon. I had no clue what it meant when I left and I still had no clue what it meant when I came back to the monster army in shambles and news of my brother being killed by the royal army. I had no direction in life so I hid in the shadows until I heard that Moon Butterfly had a child by the name of Star. From that point on the story differs from reality to reality, but I realized that this child was the 'star' from the prophecy. So I made a last-ditch effort to kidnap the baby with my remaining soldiers. It was a futile attempt that ended with the deaths of many monsters, and Moon gave me a punishment worse than death; she destroyed my physical body and trapped my soul in this void dimension. I spent years trying to escape my prison by any means necessary."
"Does any means necessary include invading people's minds and tricking them into helping you?" Marco interjected spitefully.
"I didn't trick anyone. I told them the truth and they agreed to help. I showed them what a world without magic would be like. Where everyone's the same and nothing is deciding the fate of others. Where everyone's a normal person. The magic-blessed people of Mewni have controlled things for too long. Once I destroy magic, what will the people have to say when they see that the royal Butterfly family is no stronger than the common townsfolk."
"It seems to me that you just want revenge on the Butterfly family for what they did to you."
"Of course I want revenge, they took everything away from me. Did you expect me to let them get away with killing everyone I knew and loved? No. I want vengeance, but this is bigger than just me. I want revenge for the people who were too weak to claim theirs. Soon there will be no magic for anyone to use as leverage.
"Soon? You say that like you're escaping this place."
"Were you planning to stop me? I got nothing but time. What do you have? No magic, no special abilities, no superpowers. You don't even have a sword to defend yourself anymore. Face it boy, you're just a normal person."
Toffee stood in his black suit with slicked back hair and signature poker face, he looked at the boy with calculating eyes and waited for his response. Marco glared at the lizard with hatred burning in his eyes.
"You're right about one thing. I want revenge for those too weak to take it for themselves. You killed Janna and you're going to pay for it."
Marco ran forward with his fist cocked back ready to sock the lizard in his jaw. The boy didn't make it a few feet before shadow tendrils shot out from the darkness and wrapped itself around Marco. The knight struggled against the bondage and glared viciously at Toffee.
"So you really did come in here without a plan. I'm baffled at how you were able to survive so long. You're in MY dimension, I make the rules and you're nothing but a puppet for me to control. You should have listened to your girlfriend and stayed in the hospital."
Marco screamed in pain as he felt his very soul being drained by his restraints. He couldn't move and he couldn't breath like a boa constrictor was squeezing the life out of him. The boy growled as the pain subsided for a second, there was sweat pouring down his face and he was gasping for air.
"Your body is mine." Toffee stated as he closed his hand.
That was the cue for the tendrils to continue sucking his life out. It felt like his consciousness was being ripped apart and he felt, at any second, that his head was going to split down the center. He couldn't muffle his screams any longer as the pain skyrocketed and threw him into shock. Marco never wanted to die so bad in his life. He tried to control himself but his thoughts were astray as his mind abandoned him. Marco was tossed from the pedestal and forced into an imaginary cage that locked him out of reality. The boy closed his eyes as his mind went blank.
Toffee opened his eyes to the roof of the throne room. He heard fighting and explosions coming from the distance but it seemed like some action was close. The man widened his eyes as he realized that the transfer worked. He was free. Toffee didn't feel like himself and he raised his hands up in front of his face to prove it. He WAS the boy. Toffee slowly got up and scanned the area. He saw his elite being ruined by a familiar princess. He watched the fight partake and smiled when Star blasted his henchman through the floor. It seemed like the battle was over and he took his chance to step in.
"Hello princess." Toffee called out.
The blonde girl spun around to face him and she immediately narrowed her eyes as if she knew who it REALLY was, she was a clever one.
"Nothing gets past you, huh?"
"Where's Marco?"
"It seems like you already know the answer to THAT question, princess."
Star gritted her teeth and glared at the boy through angry tears. She KNEW that idiot didn't have a plan. How could she let him leave? Star was disgusted with herself, but swallowed her emotions and took a step forward. She was about to fight the love of her life. Toffee looked past the girl at the group of people that suddenly burst into the room. He was irritated to find that their little one-on-one was interrupted.
"Star!"
The princess looked back to see Kelly and Dennis, along with her parents, and Tom. She smiled at them weakly as she noticed their battle injuries.
"Moon? Moon Butterfly? Not the same one, but you're all the same to me. How ironic that you've come to witness the demise of your daughter." Toffee shouted.
The former queen's blood ran cold as she recognized that evil voice. It was him. It was Toffee. She looked at Marco and noticed his cold eyes glaring back at her. If that's who she thinks it is, then they can not allow him to escape this room.
Marco tugged at his invisible jail bars in an attempt to escape. He didn't expect it to go this way at all. Toffee had taken over his mind and he couldn't even put up a proper fight. He was terrified of what the lizard was doing with his body. He tensed up as he thought of himself killing Star and the look of betrayal on her face… Like in the dream. Marco pounded on his prison bars violently in hopes that'll free him somehow. A small light interrupted his tantrum, it shined directly in his eyes and he squinted to get a better look.
"Hey Marco. You plan on using that spell anytime soon?" Glossaryck asked.
The boy pulled the sheet of paper from his back pocket and opened it. There was nothing written on the paper. He flipped it over and saw two words: "TRAP" and "CARD". Marco rolled his eyes at how cheesy it was and gave it to the floating blue man. Glossaryck snapped his fingers and it turned into a key, which floated into Marco's hand.
"Good luck, kid."
Marco didn't have time to respond as he shot up through the darkness into a white room with a single door in the middle. The boy twisted the doorknob and walked through the door into his bedroom. He noticed another version of himself standing at his desk and examining his pictures.
"It's nice right? Normal life." The boy called out to the clone.
"Quite."
The clone turned around to reveal the yellow eyes of Toffee and a burn scar on his cheek. He watched the original Marco close the door and lock it. The key disappeared into dust after its use.
"So this was your plan? Lock me in your mind, knowing that I can't kill you or risk being erased as well. From one prison to another, with you as the prison warden to prevent me from escaping. Maybe you are special after all, I don't think a normal person would make such a sacrifice."
"What do you mean? That's the best kind of sacrifice. The one made by someone who doesn't have any powers to rely on."
Star watched in horror as her boyfriend's body contorted and screams of pain escaped his mouth. She was about to help him when she felt herself be pulled back by her mom. They both had tears in their eyes as they watched their knight suffer. The boy fell to one knee as silence took over the room. Marco raised his head and looked at his terrified girlfriend.
"Good. I didn't do anything bad." Marco said slowly as he smiled at Star.
"Marco?" Star called out as she moved towards the boy.
"Stop. I don't know how long I can stay in control. I just wanted to apologize for being a jerk earlier. I know you were trying to protect me."
Marco pulled out the portal gun that he lifted off Reaper earlier and blasted a portal behind him. The room was filled with the loud flapping of wings as a black dragon appeared by the balcony opening and transformed into a familiar woman that Marco recognized. She walked near the boy and studied him intensely.
"Well that seems to be my cue to leave. The next time we meet, we will most likely be enemies. So don't hold back haha… I love you, Star Butterfly."
The room was completely quiet as Marco turned around to walk towards the portal, the boy was grabbed by a teary eyed princess.
"Marco? What's the plan?"
"Keep Toffee from escaping."
"N-no like to get you back."
Marco smiled and kissed her forehead before breaking out of her grasp and heading to the portal.
"Come, Esmeralda." Marco commanded as he disappeared into the portal.
The woman looked at the group then at the portal before following the boy into the vortex. Star watched the portal disappear along with her boyfriend. She couldn't describe what she was feeling right now, was it sadness or anger? Marco had left her again and she doesn't know if he's coming back this time. Moon held her daughter as she cried into her chest, the entire room was either crying or holding their head down in respect. The one powerless person saved everyone from Toffee's chaos. A true hero.
AUTHOR's NOTE: And that is it for this story! I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves on this journey with Star and Marco. There were alot of twists and cliffhangers but we got through it. I mean Marco did technically stop Toffee from destroying everything. Now him and the agent of chaos share a prison within the boy's mind. I would like to thank everyone for reading my first story, I wanted to try something new and share it with people. This is the official end of this story. There will be NOTHING else after chapter 30. I still do not know if I will be doing a sequel, it is up to you guys to review your thoughts on another story. For now, I will be working on some other works. I will still be writing FanFic for SVTFOE, but I have other interests to entertain as well. My upload schedule will change in the upcoming weeks so be on the lookout for that. Thanks again for all your support and I'll see you guys later.
