Chapter 43.

=Normal POV=
[February 8; Late Night]
[Hunter Isle; Great Hall]

Runa's birthday had been a blast; she enjoyed everything from the moment she woke up to now, when it's 10:00 pm and the party was winding down. The hall was already cleaned up, people were saying goodnight and healing home to recover before a normal day ensued tomorrow. It was later now, and as Viggo made sure things were all set; the rest of the family was ready to get to the house and relax in bed.

"Thank you for the party, mom and dad," Runa hugged her Truda and Viggo.

"You're welcome, sweetheart," Truda replied.

"We're glad you liked it and had fun," Viggo added.

"Shall we head home?" Hertha suggested.

"Absolutely," Ryker nodded. The Grimborn's began making their way to the house, but stopped realizing Hiccup was still standing beside Toothless. "Hiccup? Are you coming?"

"Yeah, I'll be there in a bit. I'm just going to take Toothless on the night flight," Hiccup informed softly. Viggo and Ryker could already tell that Hiccup wanted to be alone with his best friend for a while, and clear his head.

"Be safe!" Truda stated.

"Toothless won't let anything happen to me, don't worry," Hiccup reassured as he climbed into the saddle, positioned his feet, then opened the tail fin up. "Sky, Toothless!" Hiccup patted his friends' neck. Toothless purred, raising his wings, then darting forward and curving up into the clear, moonlit sky.

"I wonder what has him so down lately," Ryker asked, directing it towards Viggo.

"Could be that he misses Gobber," Viggo offered. "Or that January has passed and I believe the 20th had marked the year he's been gone from Berk," He added.

"Suppose it's possible," Ryker shrugged.

"Berk?" Brynjar inquired. "So he really is Stoick the Vast's son?"

"Yes, son," Viggo nodded. "Hiccup Raseri, as he goes by now, is actually Hiccup Haddock and legal heir to the throne of Berk, rightful next chief of the Hooligan tribe,"

"And the Hooligans betrayed him, correct?" Hertha wondered.

"When his powers came out, they all rejected and abandoned him over the course of a week. Hiccup didn't have anyone but Gobber and Toothless, so he decided to leave after realizing the Hooligans would never accept him as their chief because of his abilities. As Hiccup said, why stay where he wasn't wanted," Ryker explained.

Runa frowned. "That's so unfair to Hiccup…"

"Yes, it is, but Hiccup made his decision and I feel that he made it in his best interests. This is not the first time his tribe has abandoned him over something he did," Viggo sighed.

"What do you mean?" Truda inquired.

"Back when Hiccup was fifteen, and had befriended Toothless; the tribe also rejected and abandoned Hiccup as one of them." Ryker informed. "His father told him that he wasn't a Viking, and wasn't his son,"

"That's cruel," Agnar muttered. "But…Hiccup forgave them, didn't he?"

"Yes, after Hiccup and Toothless risked their lives to stop Red Death, the source of Berk's and other island's raids," Viggo nodded. "Things were fine up until last January when Hiccup's powers were revealed. Everyone got scared because Hiccup didn't have control over them, and that is his father's fault for making Hiccup learn how to shut off his emotions to keep his abilities from sparking up. Hiccup was also forced to drink some concoction tea to make his powers lay dormant."

"So when Hiccup feels too much emotion, his powers flare up, and it scared everyone to see such unnatural abilities. Thus leading to them feeling Hiccup didn't belong," Ryker continued the explanation. "And then there's considering that Hiccup is still working through other personal things too," He mentioned, which the other three Grimborn parents understood. Truda, and Hertha were aware of Berk's betrayal, and Hiccup's capture where he was tortured. Without going into detail, of course. Even Ryker and Viggo didn't know things in detail, but could only imagine what Hiccup went through with Johann and whoever else was there.

"Someone should go teach that tribe to appreciate a gift!" Runa folded her arms with a huff.

"Gift?" A few of the family members asked.

"Well, yeah…" Runa began. "Hiccup has never done any wrong in his life, so I don't assume it's a curse. However, Hiccup has stopped raids and fought for peace among dragons and other people…So maybe his powers were a blessing for all the good he's done?" She suggested.

"That could explain things, but only if Hiccup had just received these abilities after turning fifteen when the peace began…" Ryker told Runa.

"But, my dear daughter, Hiccup expressed that he's had these abilities from a young age. What he recalls, is three years old, when something happened to make Stoick take him to the elder and figure out what happened. The elder, apparently, informed with Gobber's translation that she doesn't know how, and also didn't have the power to take them away. So Stoick made Hiccup control his emotions, so his magic wouldn't flare, and also drink that tea while younger to keep his power suppressed while learning to keep his feelings in check," Viggo responded.

"At the same time," Ryker got his brother's attention now. "Runa might have the right idea about Hiccup's powers being given over a good acts," He added.

"Define?" Viggo asked.

"Didn't Hiccup tell us that his mother was different, like him, and had wanted peace with dragons? That she always stopped the tribe from killing dragons in raids, allowing them to get away? Maybe her good heart and actions allowed the Gods to bless her child after she was taken?" Ryker explained.

Viggo rubbed his chin, but nodded. "I do see how that could be a possibility, but there would be no way of proving such a theory without talking to the Gods. And that's not possible," Viggo reasoned.

"I'm sorry, back up…Hiccup's mother was taken, like kidnapped?" Hertha questioned.

"Yes," Ryker nodded. "By a dragon, according to Hiccup," He added.

"So what happened to her?" Vera asked.

"Hiccup's mother was taken by a dragon when he was still a baby, he doesn't have any memories of her and he only knows she was taken because Gobber told him such. Well, his father had too, but Gobber is the one who informed Hiccup that his mom was different from others, like himself. Hiccup never knew his mother, and given she was never recovered; it seems the story is that she was killed by dragons, not that Hiccup holds ill-will towards dragons for it; he understood those were the times of Red Death's rule," Viggo informed softly.

"The poor boy has been through so much," Truda said sadly.

"Yes, he's never had it easy, his few good times were in the forge with Gobber, befriending Toothless, and those few years of acceptance with the tribe…Otherwise; its evidently been nothing but miserable for him," Ryker mentioned.

"Do you believe we should contact Gobber, let him know Hiccup seems to be sinking further?" Hertha wondered.

"Not yet," Viggo shook his head. "We were told not to contact Gobber unless Hiccup starts withdrawing and getting worse, and this state he's in has been the constant since we found him. He has moments of joy, and the rest is…This,"

"We're just going to continue to monitor him, be here for him," Ryker stated.

"Is there anything we can do to help him…Recover, I guess?" Brynjar inquired.

"Unfortunately, no. We're already doing the best we can, but that only goes so far as it depends on Hiccup to want help. Hiccup has access to his favorite things, forging and working with dragons. The rest of healing comes from accepting what happened, talking about it, and letting people know what he's been through so we can understand and assist in getting Hiccup to recover. But all that comes when Hiccup is ready, and if he wants the help," Viggo said.

"Does he want help?" Runa questioned.

"I believe he does," Viggo nodded.

"We just don't feel he's quite ready to tackle it yet. Hiccup is still trying to recover memories of some things as he went through quite a bit," Ryker added.

"I feel that Hiccup might open up more if he felt things were…Settled in life. Not like married with a family, but having people he can rely on no matter what…A place he can always go," Viggo informed.

"If he had a loving, supportive, accepting tribe?" Hertha suggested.

"A home…" Runa noted. "Hiccup doesn't just have a tribe anymore, he doesn't have a home. How can he feel like he'll recover when he doesn't even know what the next day will bring. Sure, he's with us now, but for how long? When you go off hunting again, what happens to him? I'm sure he'll feel odd about just remaining here, won't he?" She asked.

"That's why we gave Hiccup the offer to stay here if he wants to. More than that, we want him to feel like this island could be his home. That we could potentially become his tribe, but I feel he may not see such being possible given we're dragon hunters." Ryker replied.

"And until we figure out another method to provide for the tribe, hunting is the highest paying business…" Viggo added with a sigh.

"Well, maybe we can talk with Hiccup? We said he was basically in charge of the dragons," Vera paused. "Maybe we should ask him what he thinks about providing for a tribe without hunting. After all, most of the other Archipelago tribes all hunted dragons too, so how did they manage when raids stopped and had peace with dragons?"

"That's an exceptionally good point, and can be taken under discussion at another time. For now, it's getting late and tomorrow is another workday," Viggo informed firmly. "The hunting season is coming in March or April, there is a lot to prepare for unless we do end up with a new source of income," He added. The group nodded, but before anyone could do anything, a black blur shot across the sky, ramming into Hiccup and Toothless and making them disconnect and start falling. "That's bad. Hiccup!" He called.

Hiccup didn't respond. "Maybe together?" Ryker offered as Viggo nodded.

"Hiccup!" Ryker and Viggo tried. Still nothing.

"All of us?" Brynjar suggested next.

"Worth a try," Hertha replied.

"HICCUP!" The Grimborn family members yelled together. Thankfully, Hiccup groaned a little, but opened his eyes and realized he was falling.

"Toothless…?" Hiccup said. His dragon was out cold, falling as well. "Toothless?!" Hiccup needed to do something, he closed his eyes and focused. Hiccup's eyes opened, revealing white and the aura encased his body this time, not just his hands like usual. Hiccup's fall slowed and he turned himself around to land feet first on the ground, then he shifted his hands without hesitation to hold his dragon and stop his fall too. It wasn't without difficulty, but Toothless landed with a slight thud safely. Hiccup cut his powers and moved to his dragon, breathing heavily, and trying to shake him a little. "Bud?...Come on, Toothless…Wake up, bud. Wake up…" Hiccup said gently but panicked too.

"What happened, Hiccup?" Runa asked quickly.

"I don't know, we were flying…And then some dragon smacked into us…" Hiccup explained as Toothless still wasn't waking. Hiccup brought up his hands with the blue glow and focusing on just hopefully taking away pain or severe injury. The glow encased Toothless a few seconds and Hiccup just held his concentration, ignoring the forming group of villagers. After a few more moments, Toothless began to grumble and open his eyes. Hiccup pulled back his hands, the blue energy receding. "Toothless?" Hiccup asked. The Night Fury groaned and shook his head, before nudging into Hiccup with a light croon. "Thank Thor…Are you okay?" Toothless warbled, his head in Hiccup's lap. "Good…Good…" Hiccup breathed in relief and stroked his dragon's head lightly, lowering his own and closing his eyes. "I don't know what I'd do without you, buddy…" Toothless gave a return noise as if to agree that he didn't know what he'd do without Hiccup.

"Seems like that dragon is long gone, it must have been in a hurry," Viggo mentioned. Hiccup got up, and then Toothless did too.

"Oh, it's still here…" Hiccup pointed out as Toothless was growling. "Just hiding and waiting to strike again,"

"But why?" Ryker wondered.

Hiccup shrugged. "Couldn't tell you until I get a good look at it and determine if it just hates humans, or there's a problem," Hiccup stated. Toothless snarled more, looking at Runa, rather through her. Hiccup saw the dragon, and his eyes widened. "Oh, my Gods…I can't believe it," Of course, no one really knew what he meant until they looked and saw another Night Fury there, past Runa, behind her. The dragon had blue eyes, and bearing its teeth and staring intently forward at them. "Another Night Fury…" Hiccup gasped. "Runa, whatever you do…Do not move…"

"W-Why…? I-Is it…Behind m-me?" Runa asked. Hiccup nodded to her.

"I'll take care of it, just stay still until I tell you otherwise. Alright? I promise you're going to be fine," Hiccup reassured. Runa caught Hiccup's eyes and nodded to him affirmatively that she understood and trusted him. Hiccup made his way past Runa, hands up, and was instantly growled at. "Okay, not gonna be easy, just like with you, bud…Maybe you can talk to it?" Hiccup suggested. He wasn't willing to risk getting closer like with Toothless with Runa in a line of fire. Toothless was easy because he was downed and couldn't get away, this Night Fury absolutely could take off and blast from above.

Toothless moved ahead and the series of growls, roars, and other dragon noises could be heard. "What are they saying?" Ryker asked Hiccup, seeing him studying the sounds closely.

"Toothless is telling her that we're good people who like dragons, and live in peace with them. But she's arguing that all humans are bad, as she's been attacked by many kinds and can't trust we're okay." Hiccup translated.

"Oh, so this is a female?" Vera inquired.

"Yes," Hiccup nodded. "Toothless is trying to convince her to give us a chance, but she's stubborn. Can't say I blame her," He shrugged. "Oh, you're okay to move now, Runa. Just keep it slow and calm," Runa slowly turned, she didn't care about staying in that spot, but she didn't want her back to a Night Fury, and she felt safe beside Hiccup. Toothless grunted at the Night Fury before him when she continued to refuse, and then try to make a move forward, but Toothless cut her off. "He's telling her not to be hasty, and also that if she hurts anyone, he'll have to retaliate on her because we've done nothing wrong to her, so it's wrong to associate the bad actions of others with us,"

The Night Fury tried again and Toothless growled, bringing up his blue glow as the female suddenly stepped back, sat down on her hind legs, the bowed her head to Toothless. "Is that her submitting to him?" Agnar asked curiously.

"Basically. The female understands that this island is more or less under Toothless's protection; he's the head dragon here and that glow, as I've said before, is an Alpha mode. It makes Toothless the chief of the dragons if that's easier to understand. She knows that if she's here, Toothless is in charge. Also that she did wrong by attacking me; that was her knocking me off Toothless, she was trying to help him," Hiccup explained calmly. "Toothless? We good now?" Toothless nodded to him, receding his glow.

"We'll let you handle this. Even if Toothless has her bowing to him; that doesn't mean us…" Ryker stated calmly. Hiccup nodded, nearing Toothless as the female narrowed her blue eyes at Hiccup, giving a warning growl.

"Alright…Easy now," Hiccup told the female. "It's okay…I'm not gonna hurt you," He reassured, moving his shield, arrows, sword, and dagger to the ground carefully and crouched there with his hand out to the Night Fury. "See? I'm a friend," The female continued to eye him cautiously. "I trust you," He continued, taking a breath to relax, then turn his head and close his eyes. "Will you trust me?" He asked. The female eyed him, then looked at Toothless, who nodded to her that Hiccup was okay. The dragon moved closer and bumped her nose quickly Hiccup's palm, then pulled back. It was different, but that was how Hiccup figured this dragon was going to show her trust to him, and through Toothless that she ultimately decided to allow it. "There we go, it's alright, girl. No one here will hurt you. Dragons and humans are friends, just look around," Hiccup motioned as the female did so, seeing other dragons standing beside their bonded riders.

"Yeah, you're safe here," Runa claimed, bringing the female Night Fury's attention on her now. Runa didn't even understand why she said it, but she felt drawn into this dragon. And before she realized she was moving closer beside Hiccup. "We won't hurt you," She added, as the female dragon sat back on her hind legs again, eyeing Runa with caution and slightly bearing her teeth with a small growl as Runa's hand was outstretched to her face, but still distance between them. Hiccup saw what was happening, and he stepped back to watch. "I won't hurt you…" Runa continued gently as the dragon's eyes remained on her, but became calmer while staring back.

Everyone saw that the Night Fury lowered her head a little, now purring, but her eyes were on Runa still. "What happening?" Viggo asked.

"Ssh…" Hiccup held his hand up.

Runa and the female Night Fury continued to get closer, even that the dragon brushed her head against Runa's fingertips and past them until they were just inches apart. "I promise you this-," There was a pause in Runa's words as the gave a light smile to the female fury, noticing the black scales, beautiful blue eyes where she saw her own reflection in them, and the semi-lighter star pattern on her forehead. "Nightstar," She finally whispered. As if nothing else needed to be said to the dragon Runa dubbed as Nightstar, the fury bypassed Runa's hand and closed her eyes, pressing her forehead to Runa's with a low purr. When Nightstar had leaned in, Runa also closed her eyes. After a few moments, the two pulled away and Nightstar nuzzled Runa's face with a somewhat gummy smile.

"Welcome to having a bonded dragon, Runa," Hiccup smiled. "And happy birthday," Runa just smiled wide, her hands holding the sides of Nightstar's face. Runa finally had a bonded dragon and it was a freaking Night Fury; it couldn't have happened at a better time. Now, Runa's day was entirely perfect.
