Chapter 30

The sound of screams echoed through the laboratory, the mysterious scientist humming a delightful tune over his victim's screams. Looking over to the corner of the room, a sadistic smirk spread to his face at the sight of his young captive, strapped down to a metal chair, begging for mercy.

A combination of the drugs in her system and the ferocity of commander Zachery left Ruby a bloody mess.

Shortly after his call with Mr. Schnee, he called commander Zachery, asking him for help with his experiment. Originally Zachery had declined, saying that he had more important things to do, but after the scientist had explained what he would be doing, Zachery could help but to agree, wanting to pay Summer back for cutting his hand off.

By now Ruby was sobbing in her chair, screaming every time Zachery struck her.

"Hold up for a moment," the scientist ordered, causing Zachery to pout. "Aww come on doc, I was just having some fun, whatcha stopping me for?" He whined, taking another swing at Ruby. "I still need her alive and at the rate, you're going, she'll be dead within the next hour," the scientist explained. "Spoilsport," Zachery muttered, walking over to a nearby table and grabbing a piece of cloth to wipe Ruby's blood away. The scientist approached Ruby, examining her eyes, and then writing something down on his clipboard.

"Zachery, would you please bring me that crate?" the scientist asked, pointing to a large crate, covered by a thin white sheet.

Zachery did as he was asked, moving over to the large crate. The crate was extremely heavy, only able to move it due to the wheels at the bottom. "What do you have in here?" Zachery asked, struggling to move the large crate. "You'll see," the scientist answered cryptically, walking over to the crate and throwing the white sheet off. Zachery whistled at the crate's contents, "I gotta say that I wasn't expecting this," Zachery said, staring at the caged beowolf. The beowolf was currently asleep, being hit by dozens of tranquilizers a few hours ago. "Please move the cage over there," the scientist requested, pointing to the spot in front of Ruby.

"Okey dokey," Zachery said, pushing the beowolf over to Ruby. The girl's breathing started to increase at the sight of the beowolf, terrible thoughts started to seep into her mind, were they going to kill her, let the beowolf rip her to shreds?

As if on cue the scientist grabbed a cattle prod, walking over to the cage and electrocuting the beowolf. The beowolf awoke with an angry snarl, it's hate-filled eyes glaring at the scientist, who just smirked in response. Eventually, the beowolf's eyes left the scientist, settling on Ruby, the girls fear only serving to make the beowolf even hungrier.

"Are you ready?" the scientist asked, making Ruby's silver eyes widen. Zachery had a huge smile on his face, the smile faltering slightly when the scientist whispered something into his ear. "Aww do I have to," Zachery complained, walking behind Ruby but she was too terrified to notice.

"Please stop," Ruby begged, vainly struggling against the chains that held her, "Why are you doing this?" Ruby cried, making the scientist laugh. "For science, and also because I enjoy it," the scientist explained, placing his hand on the latch that would release the beowolf. "As for why we've gathered everything we needed from you, now it's time to get rid of you," The scientist said, pulling the latch open and throwing the door open. Ruby screamed in terror, watching as the beowolf lunged at her. Before the beowolf reached her, Ruby's vision filled with white, passing out after a few moments.

When the bright light finally faded, the two men approached the now unconscious girl and the frozen beowolf that stood before her.

"Looks like she did it, I'll be honest I thought you were going to let the beowolf get her until you told me to shoot it if it got too close," Zachery said, walking up to the frozen grimm and poking it. "This is spectacular," the scientist exclaimed, walking over to the frozen grimm. The scientist started running his hands over the frozen grimm. "What are you going to do with her?" Zachery asked, lifting Ruby's arm to check for a pulse. "She's still alive," Zachery said, dropping Ruby's hand unceremoniously. "I'll look at her in a moment," the scientist mumbled, examining the frozen grimm's eyes. After a few moments, the scientist stopped examining the frozen grimm, coming over to check on Ruby.

"She should be fine," the scientist said, examining her quickly, before returning to the frozen beowolf.

"How long is she going to be passed out for?" Zachery asked, wanting to continue his playtime with Ruby. "According to my...source she would normally be passed out for a few days but thanks to a special something I'm about to give her, she'll only be knocked out for a few hours," the scientist explained.

"Good," Zachery smiled. "Hey doc, answer a question for me would ya?"

"What is it?" the scientist asked, taking a quick glance towards Zachery. "Why are you working for Mr. Schnee? I mean don't get me wrong, working with a Schnee has its advantages, especially with our paychecks, but you don't seem like you're doing it for the money. No, you're doing it for something else, perhaps for the sake of science, like you told her, but there's more isn't there?" Zachery asked, making the scientist raise an eyebrow.

"You're quite the perceptive one, I couldn't care less about Jacques's generous paychecks, I do enjoy furthering my knowledge but I mainly work for Mr. Schnee because I want to see him succeed for… personal reasons," the scientist explained cryptically. Zachery hummed in thought, eventually deciding not to say whatever he was thinking about.

A few minutes later the scientist had finished inspecting the grimm, calling a few of Zachery's men to push the frozen beowolf back into its cage.

"Bring it to my examination room. I'll be up shortly." The scientist ordered. "You got it, Issac," Zachery said, leading his men to the exit, with the cage in tow. "Oh, by the way, call me when she wakes up, I still owe her mother," Zachery called before exiting the room. Once Zachery and his men were gone Issac went over to examine his unconscious victim. "You and I are going to make Jacques a very powerful man, and with that power, he'll finally get rid of General Ironwood," Issac spat, his hatred for the man rising at the thought of him.

"Now let's get you ready, I just had an amazing idea," Issac laughed, before getting to work.

Glynda Goodwitch let out an annoyed sigh, it seemed like Ozpin's favorite thing to do was irk her. The entire situation with Summer and Raven had given Glynda a massive headache and with Ozpin acting so strangely her nerves were on edge. She was currently heading up to the headmaster's office to play a friendly game of chess. "Good afternoon, Glynda," Ozpin greeted, standing up from his chair and giving his friend a warm smile.

"Hello Ozpin, how are you today?" Glynda asked, coming to sit in the chair in front of Ozpin's desk. "I'm fine, thank you, how are you?" Ozpin asked. "A little frustrated," Glynda admitted, getting a curious look from Ozpin. "Why are you frustrated?" Ozpin asked. "It's just, I know that you have your reasons for what you do but for the life of me I can't understand why you did it," Glynda said.

"'Did what?" Ozpin asked, his interest peaking.

"Why did you let Raven go, knowing that she'll only interrupt Summer and Qrow?" Glynda asked, causing Ozpin to chuckle slightly. "Oh that's what's troubling you, I guess I could explain myself," Ozpin chuckled, "for all of the time that I've known her, Raven's been a very resourceful person, always finding a way to accomplish her goals. I sent Raven, knowing that with her help, Summer and Qrow have a better chance at saving Ruby," Ozpin explained, reaching under his desk to pull out his chessboard. "But we both know Raven's going to try something," Glynda argued. "That we do," Ozpin agreed, "but it won't matter, Summer and Qrow know that as well, and will be keeping their guards up, and even if Raven somehow gets to Ruby first, I've taken special precautions to ensure that she won't get far," Ozpin assured, setting his soldiers on the board.

"You mean you put a chip in her neck?" Glynda asked, placing her soldiers on the board as well. It wouldn't have been the first time, Glynda thought, remembering the rogue huntsman they dealt with a few years ago "Of course not, when would I have had time to do that?" Ozpin asked rhetorically.

"Then what did you do?" Glynda asked.

"I had one of the cafeteria staff slip a tracker into her food, it will dissolve in a few days, but it should last long enough," Ozpin explained, moving one of his pawns forward "So we're going to arrest her after they find Ruby?" Glynda asked, moving one of her pawns as well. "Precisely," Ozpin answered, moving his pawn to kill Glynda's pawn.

"What are we going to do about Leo?" Glynda asked, moving her bishop up and to the right a few places. "Leo, what about him?" Ozpin asked, taking a look at the board before moving his knight up and to the left.

"Cinder and her team were transfer students from Haven Academy and their transcripts were accepted by Leo himself, do you think that he knew who Cinder and her team were?" Glynda asked, no longer paying attention to the game. To Glynda's surprise, Ozpin seemed to get annoyed at her suggestion, letting out an audible sigh. "I understand that you like to air on the side of caution, but Glynda, please do not throw wild accusations like that around. Leo has been nothing but a trusted ally for countless years, I will not throw suspicion onto him for something that could easily be a mistake, I mean, I even looked over their files and did not spot any anomalies." Ozpin said, taking a deep breath to calm himself. "I'm sorry," Ozpin apologized.

"It's alright, I'm sorry I suggested it," Glynda apologized. The two continued playing chess, Ozpin eventually winning in the end. "That was a very enjoyable game, thank you for playing with me," Ozpin thanked. "It was my pleasure," Glynda said, turning around to exit the headmaster's office. "One more thing, Glynda," Ozpin requested, making the deputy headmistress turn around to look at the headmaster. "Since Qrow is temporarily unavailable, would you please take over his classes for him," Ozpin requested.

"Of course sir," Glynda answered, walking into the elevator and disappearing as the doors closed.

"Everybody ready?" Qrow asked, all of of team -WBY snapping to attention. "Yes sir," all the girls answered in unison. The girls and Qrow filed out of the room, meeting Summer and Raven outside. "Come on girls we're going to fly a bullhead a few miles away from the Schnee mansion. From there we'll approach the mansion, being careful not to trip any alarms or set off any sensors. Weiss you said that your father's office was on the 4th floor right?" Qrow asked.

"Yes sir," Weiss answered.

"Good, Raven and I will sneak into his office, once their Raven will cut a portal to Yang and bring everybody up," Qrow said. "How are you planning to get up? My father has cameras and sensors all along the wall, if you try to scale it, we'll be caught," Weiss said. Qrow blinked in surprise, "oh ummm," Qrow muttered, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly, "we're going to turn into birds and fly up there," Qrow answered.

"Like Ruby?" Yang asked.

"WHAT!" Summer shouted, looking between everyone before her eyes settled on Raven. "What did you do!?" Summer shouted with enough venom to make an ancient deathstalker blush. "Just helped my daughter," Raven answered, without an ounce of regret in his voice. It took all of Qrow, Weiss, and Blake strength to keep Summer and Yang from ripping Raven apart. "ENOUGH!" Qrow shouted, making everyone, except from Raven, freeze in place. "We don't have time for this, Ruby needs us and all we're doing is arguing like children," Qrow said. "But Qrow she.." Summer started, only to be interrupted by Qrow. "It really isn't that big of a deal, in my experience being able to turn into a bird is a good thing," Qrow said, taking a look towards a smirking Raven, "but don't you think, even for a second, that what you did was okay

Summer and I are going to make sure you spend the rest of your days rotting in a cell," Qrow growled.

"What ever, let's go," Raven said, following Qrow and Summer and team -WBY, as they left for their mission, all completely unaware of what was in store for them.
