Chapter 24: Aftermath

Obito groaned as he shifted his position. He slowly opened his eyes and saw that he was lying down in a hospital bed. He sat up slowly and looked around. Naruto was on the bed beside him, sleeping, and there was no one else in the room. Obito looked at Naruto worryingly as he scanned for any sign of injury, but from what he could see, Naruto had not sustained any major injuries and was only chakra exhausted. He sighed and pondered whether he should call out for someone or wait for someone to check upon them. "I should probably wait," Obito thought, "The hospital is probably busy with other patients who were injured in the battle, best not to disturb them."
With that decision, Obito lay back and pondered how the village must be doing. Was Hokage-Sama ok? Who is looking after the village? Where did Orochimaru go? Obito tried to answer these questions on his own. While two of the questions would be easily answered, the third proved to be a troublesome thought. "If only my chakra wasn't so low then... maybe Orochimaru could be stopped..." Obito thought. He glanced at the clock, bored without any human interaction when the door was opened and Sasuke, Itachi, Shisui, and Kakashi came bursting through.
"Tou-chan you are awa-" Sasuke had barely completed his sentence when Kakashi cut him off, "You can do that later, Obito you are coming with me right now!" And before Obito could reply, Kakashi had taken out Obito's saline, flung him on his back, and jumped out through the window.
"WOOOOAHHH WHAT THE HELL KAKASHI?" Obito screamed.
"We don't have time to stop and explain so here's the short version. Hiruzen-sama is very heavily injured. He is still in critical condition but not in immediate danger. Our medics have stabilized him just enough so that he won't die but he still in a coma. However, even if he survives, he will no longer be fit as a ninja and probably can't be Hokage anymore." Kakashi stopped as he made a few huge leaps across the buildings, and then continued, "Now, Danzo is trying to become the new Hokage and Homura and Koharu are all for it and most everyone else is against. However, without another candidate coming front he will be made Hokage. This is where you come in, you are applying to be a candidate." Kakashi finished as he got down at the Hokage tower. He started pulling Obito up to the council room.
"Wait wha- I can't be the Hokage!"
Kakashi turned and stood face to face with Obito, "Yes you can, it has always been your dream, now go and become Hokage or I shit you not, I'm punching you so hard I'll break Rin and Tsunade's record for strongest punch" Kakashi said.
"Way to give a pep talk," Obito said sarcastically.
"Just go," Kakashi said and pushed him through the council meeting doors before disappearing in a Shunshin.
Obito grumbled and stood up straight facing the Daimyo, "Ah, Good morning Daimyo-sama. How are you?"
"Fine, thank you Obito-san. However, I would have liked it if you would have worn some appropriate clothes before appearing."
Obito blinked before realizing he was still in a hospital gown. He turned red and replied, "Oh, uh, sorry about that. I just rushed to get here after hearing the news about Hokage-sama."
The daimyo nodded and pointed to a chair beckoning him to take a seat. Obito obliged. "Now, let's see, is anyone else coming forward to be Hokage except Danzo-san?"
Obito raised his hand, "Yes I would like to put forward my name as a candidate for being Hokage."
Homura, Koharu, and Danzo instantly scowled.
"Your request has been accepted. Anyone else?" No one else put up their hands. "Ok, let's get to the voting. The candidates may not vote. All in favor of Danzo?" Only Homura and Koharu's hands were raised along with the members of the civilian council. "All in fair of Obito?" All the clan heads raised their hand along with the Daimyo and his advisors. "Obito is the new Hokage! The coronation ceremony will take place in one month. However, Obito will have all the power of a Hokage starting now."
As soon as the Daimyo finished, Danzo burst out, "Daimyo-Sama, there's no way Obito should be the Hokage. He is young and doesn't know a thing about leading a village.
"He was the Yondaime's student and no doubt he has picked up the leadership qualities needed," the Daimyo defended.
"But right now, we should appoint a Hokage who other villages know and are afraid of. Only this way can our village be protected right now after the invasion. The other villages won't dare attack if a person with a widespread reputation is at the reins."
"Like you?" Obito said with piercing eyes. "You are old, no one remembers you. Even at your youth, you were a nobody. You simply cowered behind Hiruzen-Sama and took credit wherever you could." Obito added scathingly.
"Why you!" Danzo said and half stood up when the Daimyo interrupted, "Enough! Obito will be the Hokage and that's final! Now Obito what things do you plan to do first."
"That can wait for later. For now, I remove Homura, Koharu, and Danzo as the Hokage's advisor and appoint Shikaku as the chief advisor."
There was an instant uproar, "You can't do that!" a member of the civilian council member who was obviously Danzo's lackey.
"I can," Obito said coolly. "I would also like to remove these three from the council."
"I'm afraid you can't do that. I don't know your reasons but you need sufficient evidence and reasoning to remove someone or suspend them from the council."
Homura, Koharu, and Danzo smirked but the smirk was wiped off their dace as soon as Obito said his next sentence, "Then I would like to open a criminal investigation against them, their known contacts, and the civilian council. For now, that's it."
Many people looked ready to protest but the Daimyo raised his hand and said, "So it will be done. Council dismissed. Good luck Godaime Hokage." With that everyone started to leave the council room in a fury except the clan heads, they were all congratulating Obito.
"Thanks, but I should go check on Naruto and the others," Obito replied as Tsume offered to go out for drinks.
Obito left the room and hurried to the hospital to give them the news.
He jumped through the window and saw that Rin and Jiraiya had also come, "Congrats!" Everyone shouted.
"Wha? How did you guys know already?" Obito asked. Rin pointed to Jiraiya. "What? I would be a lousy spymaster if I didn't know what's going on in my village."
"Naruto how are you feeling?" Obito asked seeing him awake. "Fine." he beamed, "But don't get too comfy with the Hokage hat, I'm getting it soon!"
Everyone laughed, "That reminds me, Jiraiya, I am giving you a mission."
"To go get Tsunade."
"Your mission is to... wait, how did you know?" Obito asked.
"Sensei is gravely injured so I knew you would make me go get her as soon as you were appointed Hokage plus you would like someone like her who has the guts and knows everything to be the advisor."
Obito nodded, "Yes but get here by a month. I have to choose my advisors before the coronation."
Jiraiya nodded, "Ok, but I am bringing the brat with me."
"Why?" Naruto and Obito asked simultaneously.
"Well, I want to teach him his father's signature jutsu for one..."
"The Rasengan!?" Naruto asked excitedly.
"Yes and I also think it's time you meet your godmother."
Naruto nodded already knowing this information.
"Ok, he can go. When do you leave?" Obito asked.
"Right away, I packed both of our bags."
"But shouldn't he stay in the hospital a few more days?"
"I'm fine tou-chan! Let's go Ero-sennin!"
"Fine you can go, but we are seeing you off," Obito said.
Jiraiya and Naruto nodded. After a few minutes, everyone was dressed and at the village gate.
"Bye, we'll see you soon!" Naruto called out.
"Travel safe and don't start training for a few days!" Obito called out. "You see to it too Jiraiya or I'm appointing you a 100 D ranks!"
"I'M RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH!" Jiraiya snapped.
