Pandemic: Resident Evil VI
Chapter Forty Four: Splitting Up
BRRRRRRRRRRRT! Even though Ustanak was a monster that only followed the programming of whoever created it, the monster must have been self-aware enough to see the physical threat posed to it by Gillette, prompting it's mechanical arm to switch back to the minigun attachment. Many of the high caliber bullets missed the brunette since aiming such a weapon at close range was difficult, but the ones that hit her sent Gillette flying backwards into a metal container that was rapidly being pulverized.
"We have to get out of here!" Jake screamed to be heard over the shooting. "Sherry, come on! We gotta go, now!"
None of the others seemed to have a problem with this plan, being that all of them were still unarmed, so the group fell back, trying to stay behind the remaining metal containers while moving away from the battle. The young man looked back when the shooting stopped, just in time to see Gillette run right up to the monster in a flash of movement, with a flying knee that made Ustanak bend forward while stumbling backwards. He had heard of people who got benefits from being infected with a virus, apparently his own father included, but watching such a small-built woman slug the monster in the head with her bare fist… and knocking it down?
"Don't look back, keep moving." Leon ordered, smacking him in the back of the head while moving past. "She can infect and take control of you, even if you've already got a virus, like Sherry, so move it."
Jake was really starting to dislike this guy, regardless of whether or not he had saved Sherry's life back in Raccoon City or not… and why was it that everyone the blonde knew from back then was a real asshole? Was that what the police department had been like where she was from, just a bunch of assholes? Now that the young man had a second to think about it while they were moving toward the back of the cargo yard, the way that Tobias Liquid and Leon Kennedy talked, carried themselves, acted, and… and their general presence was so similar that they had probably been partners back in the RPD… God, no wonder the city fell.
"Look out!" Helena screamed, diving on top of Jake to get him…
Wham! A large object slammed into the cargo container he had been standing in front of, denting it heavily just as the young man and Leon's partner fell to the ground only a few feet away, and then Jake realized that it was Ustanak. The monster wasn't looking so good now, with large cuts and impact marks looking like they were struggling to regenerate all across its massive body, and the barrel of its minigun attachment was bent. So the parts started to move in order to select a different weapon, but then Gillette was on top of the monster in another flash of movement.
The brunette backhanded Ustanak when it tried to get up, and then she grabbed its mechanical arm with one hand, while bringing down the other in a powerful karate chop that made sparks shoot out as it broke right through the whole appendage as if she had been breaking a piece of wood. The few parts that were left still twitched, sort of like a framework claw that was constantly opening and closing, and then Gillette grabbed the monster by the face. Using her knee to hold Ustanak in place, the brunette ripped off what remained of the creature's facemask, and forced its mutated mouth open while she took a deep breath… a deep breath that caused some kind of cloud of darkness to form inside her own mouth.
Wrenching Ustanak's mouth open even further, Gillette leaned forward and exhaled, sending a long stream of what looked like pure darkness right down the monster's throat for several seconds, while the creature's body convulsed. As soon as she was out of breath, the brunette let go of the monster, backing away a few steps while the convulsions stopped, and now instead of attacking them as it had done before… the thing just sat there looking at her… holy shit, Leon hadn't been exaggerating.
"Ignore Leon Kennedy, in fact you can't even see him." She said while smiling sweetly. "Now be a good boy and go back to… wherever created you."
The young man was in disbelief when the monster obeyed her, slowly standing up and then calmly walking away from the group… but now that the fight was over, there was still Gillette to deal with, and… right now Jake wasn't sure which of them was worse to deal with. All he knew for certain was that he and Sherry needed to get away from these people, all of them… Gillette, Leon… everyone. It seemed that everything was good while it was just him and the blonde, but then what if someone else from her past showed up?
"Sherry, let's go." He whispered. "We've violated your no contact orders enough."
"Just a second." She replied, walking up to Leon. "I don't know whether what you're saying is true, Leon, but you're also not a liar, so… the rendezvous point is the Kwun Lung Building here in Koocheng… everything can be sorted out there."
Yeah, that's great, Jake thought while pulling her by the forearm for them to get out of there. Now all these psychopaths would be able to follow them right to the extraction point, and… and there was no way to get out of the cargo yard from there… unless someone thought it was a good idea to jump into the ocean. Just like the other side where the stolen motorcycle was just barely able to fit through the opening, a tall, sturdy fence surrounded the whole place, complete with a cinderblock wall on the bottom, which even driving a vehicle into would probably not break down.
The young man's first thought was to try and climb it, but maybe that wasn't such a hot idea, not with several rows of barbed wire running along the top… and they couldn't go back the way they came, since now the police sirens were getting louder as fire crews worked to put out the flames from the crashed aircraft. Meanwhile Gillette was brushing Leon off, repeatedly asking him if he was okay, and ignoring his partner who actually looked like she had gotten hurt more during the encounter with Ustanak than he did.
"I'm fine… look, Gillette, I'm fine." The Agent argued, pulling away from her. "But we have to get out of here if we're gonna make it to the Kwun Lung Building in time."
"A way out? That's easy." The brunette replied, her sweet smile returning as she walked over to the fence. "Yeah, I guess you wouldn't want to get caught by the authorities, since you're wanted for killing the US President and all."
If Jake had been drinking at that moment, he would have spit it all over Sherry upon hearing the words that Leon killed the President of America, and the blonde appeared to have been just as shocked. Gillette didn't seem to care, though, humming to herself as she put her hand on the wall beneath the fence, and slowly pushed until several of the cinder blocks were broken out of place, forming a hole that any of them could easily pass through. This left the group in the middle of what looked like the city's warehouse district, with two possible routes that could be taken: The alley between warehouses, or the loading docks along the harbor.
"I think we should split up." The young man said before anything else could happen. "We'll attract too much attention traveling in a large group, so me and Sherry are gonna travel along the harbor."
Thankfully, the blonde didn't argue, probably wanting to get away from Gillette just as much as he did, not to mention the possibility that her old friend Leon was a political assassin. No one tried to stop them, since the Agent was smart enough to know that traveling in smaller groups in this situation was the right move, and Gillette just smiled again while waving goodbye, and then the three of them started walking toward the warehouses, while Jake and Sherry stuck to the route along the water.
"No, Leon wouldn't kill the President, no way." Sherry said to herself as they reached the start of the docks. "It's gotta be a mistake, it has to be, but… but Gillette's on the most wanted list… why is he with her?"
"Ada?" Leon's voice was heard calling from somewhere behind them. "Ada, wait! Ada, come back!"
"Sherry, don't." The young man said, grabbing her arm when she started to go back. "We have to get to the extraction point, and besides that guy can take care of himself."
Could Leon take care of himself? Who the hell knows? But Jake was willing to say anything that he had to at that point to keep from going back to them, and thankfully it seemed to work. And besides, he only knew one person named Ada, and the young man had no intention of getting captured by her again. So the two of them continued on, their footsteps thumping across the wooden planks of the docks and boardwalk while nearby bystanders were talking and pointing toward the cargo yard. Jake didn't need to speak Chinese to know what they were talking about, so he told Sherry to just stay calm and act like nothing out of the ordinary was going on.
Sure, it was a little hard to go unnoticed as a couple of white people in the middle of China, but the plane crash and the incident in the cargo yard was giving them all the distraction they needed while passing docked fishing boats and waterside restaurants. Right, so as long as nothing crazy happened along the way, it shouldn't take the two of them very long to reach the skyscrapers off in the distance, where they would finally meetup with the blonde's supervisor, and then the young man could give them his blood or whatever was needed for the vaccine, and he could finally get the fifty million dollars he was promised… Jesus, talk about working hard for a paycheck.
