LORELAI
When I got home, Luke wasn't there yet. Kat was sleeping on the couch, her head was in Jess's lap. Golden Girls was on the TV.
"Thank god you're here. Can you turn this off? The remote is too far to reach and I didn't want to wake up Kat by moving her to get to it. I've been stuck watching a Golden Girls marathon for long enough to know I am never moving to Boca Raton."
"They live in Miami and Betty White is a National Treasure."
"I am not moving to Miami then and I don't care if Betty White is the gatekeeper of the fountain of youth"
"We should probably wake Kat up anyway. She probably will want a shower before we go tonight, so she needs to take one so I can take one."
"You have two bathrooms, so sounds like she still has to be watched? She hated having those nurses watch her at the hospital. You know they locked her bathroom?"
"Yeah, but the doctor is worried..."
"I know."
I went over to Kat and bent down slightly.
"Hey Kat, it's time to get up, we've got to get ready for the party tonight."
Kat stirred.
"Did I fall asleep again? Ugh. Why am I so tired?"
"Because you're pregnant." I told her
"But you're not napping all the time."
"I would if I could sister, now come on. We've got to get going. Your dad is going to be getting home soon."
"Alright. I need to take a bath."
"I think we only have time for a shower."
"Okay."
"We'll do it in my bathroom since it's larger."
"That's fine. I'll go get my shampoo."
"Perfect. That will give me time to change out of this dress. This front seam has been bugging me all day." I said, rubbing the annoying seam."
After I changed, Kat came up to meet me. While she was showering I decided to talk to her.
"This warm water feels good on my stomach. It's been hurting since lunch."
"You should do a hot water bottle for the car ride to my parents' house. Speaking of lunch though... we talked about that answering machine message. Did you listen to it?"
"Yeah."
"I know I asked you earlier, but would you tell me if there was anything more to it? I still don't think I quite understand"
Kat didn't answer.
"Kat"
"Sorry, I was rinsing out my shampoo, didn't want to chance getting any in my mouth."
"Well, would you tell me if there was something more to that message?"
"I think that's something you need talk to Rory about instead."
"Why would I need to talk to Rory?"
"You just should."
"Why does that sound like there is something more that would help me understand."
"I don't know... I don't know how to explain this Lorelai. So I'll put it like this. I understand the message that was left on the machine. Rory will understand the message that was left on the machine... However? Based on all the stories I have heard about Rory from a gazillion people? The reason why Rory and I understand that message and you do not? It's not congruent with all those stories I have heard about Rory. As a result... I think you have to talk to Rory to understand how that message fits into who she is, because truly... while I understand the message? I do not think I understand how that message came to be based on who Rory seems to be. I don't know Rory, but from what I have heard? I don't understand it."
Kat continued talking about how maybe Rory didn't even understand that... Something about dreams? I don't know... I couldn't focus on the rest of her words after what I had heard. I wound up cutting her off without even meaning to.
"Kat, I need you to tell me what is going on."
Kat turned off the water and stuck her head out of the opening in the shower curtain that was there so I could watch her, pushing it back further.
"Will you hand me my robe?"
"You mean my robe?" I said handing her the Carebears robe.
"Yes... and Lorelai I just really don't think I am the person to tell you what happened. Rory is... and if you do talk to her? Go into that conversation knowing I am not mad. You can ask Jess... He doesn't understand why I am not angry... but he will confirm that I am genuinely not."
"Jess knows?" I said, my voice rising slightly.
Kat stepped out of the shower, "Do not get mad at Jess. He told me even today that I should tell you... I don't even know that I ever successfully convinced him otherwise"
I got up and walked from the bathroom into my bedroom and to the door. Kat followed, but wound up sitting in the chair by my bed, drawing her feet up onto the chair with her. Part of my mind wondered if the warm shower made her tired, but my mind was more focused on finding out what the hell was going on.
"Jess!" I yelled, "I need you up here."
"What?" Jess yelled back from the living room.
"Come up here."
"Is Kat okay?" Jess said as he ran up the stairs.
"I'm fine Jess, Lorelai just wants to talk to you."
"Geez Lorelai." Jess said.
"She's fine, but she won't tell me what's going on. I understand you know what's going on though..."
Jess looked at Kat, clearly not amused.
"Hey now. I pretty much told Kat to tell you." Jess said
"She told me that. Thank you for that, but I still want to know."
"Lorelai... please? I am sure if you talk to Rory, she'll tell you what happened." Kat pleaded
Jess looked at Kat after she said that.
"C'mon Kat, you really think Rory is going to tell Lorelai what actually happened? Let's be real."
I was suddenly extremely tired. I looked at Kat and noticed she looked a little off. The discharge plans had said she might get dizzy during the shower and after getting out of the shower due to the temperature changes. This conversation could wait a little bit.
"Okay. I am going to take a shower, blow dry my hair, and get dressed. When I am done? We're going to talk about this. Even if Luke has to drive your car separately so the you, me and Jess can ride together so we can finish this conversation. Please Kat. I need to know what happened from your side. I will get Rory's side later."
"It isn't Kat's side Lorelai. It's what actually happened." Jess said.
Kat stood up slowly, walked over to Jess, and gently took his hand and pulled him out of the room. Jess who rarely uttered multiple full sentences was carrying on a conversation. Something had actually happened.
