Chapter 28: In Love
Rex was sitting at his desk, typing on his computer when the doorbell rang. Today was the last day of school, and to celebrate, both gangs were having a big end of school year party at the Torna Gang's house, and Nia was coming over to pick him up. Rex heard as Corrine went to the door, and called out, "Rex! Your girlfriend is here!" Rex jumped off of his chair, leaving his computer on. He ran to the front door, but was surprised when the girl at the door wasn't Nia. it was-
"Mythra?" Rex asked in surprise.
Mythra rolled her eyes. "Relax, lover boy. Everything is fine, Nia just wanted me to come get you."
"Oh, ok. Let's go, then." Rex said as he followed her out to her car.
For the first few minutes of the car ride, they were both silent, but when they came to a red light, Rex spoke up.
"Um, Mythra. There is something I want to ask you." Rex said.
"Mhm?" Mythra said casually.
Rex cleared his throat before speaking. "Well I know that you and Pyra have...had feelings for me since grade school. Well, what do you think about me being with Nia?"
Mythra sighed. "Well, I would be lying if I said I was fine with it. At first I wasn't. I was upset. Angry, even. You have known us for years, and some other girl just pops up and you fall for her right away. But what's so great about Nia is that all the years we knew you, Rex, we could never tell you our feelings. But Nia is not afraid. She was brave. Brave enough to literally tell you that she loved you. But me and Pyra could never do that. That's why she deserves to be with you. So be with her, Rex. Don't worry about me and Pyra. I don't doubt that we will meet other boys."
The red light turned to green, and in a few moments they were in front of Nia's house.
"Go in, Rex. Nia is waiting for you in her room." Mythra said, smiling.
Rex smiled back, then left the car and went inside. The inside of the house was huge. The entrance hall had been turned into a dance floor, and off to the side there was a snack table, and there was even a DJ booth. Rex didn't doubt that Zeke would be taking over that booth. Rex walked up the long staircase, and upstairs there were four doors, but which one was Nia's?
Suddenly, there was a a hand on his shoulder, and Rex turned to see Akhos standing there. "Her room is on the far right," Akhos said.
Rex nodded. "Thanks."
Akhos nodded back, and he went downstairs. Rex then moved to the door on the far right. He opened the door, and immediately noticed that Nia was standing on the balcony at the back of the room. He couldn't take in any detail of her room, as he was focused on Nia. He moved forward, and was soon standing next to her on the balcony, looking into the woods behind the house.
"Do you remember, Rex?" Nia said. "When we met here after the dance? That was when we first said that he loved each other.
Rex smiled. "I do, Nia. It feels like so long ago, though. I guess that's because we've been through a lot together already. We've, met, we've fallen in love, hell, we've stopped a gang war."
Nia slipped her hand into his and smiled. "And what's more, we did all together."
Rex turned to her, and looked into her eyes. She looked back. "Yes. It was all together." He then leaned in and kissed her. The kiss seemed to stretch on forever, and Rex wasn't complaining. For him, a moment with Nia was not a moment wasted. Of course, they eventually had to break away.
"We should probably get downstairs, I think the party just started." Nia said.
"Yeah, we probably should go." Rex began to walk away, but he felt a small tug on his sleeve.
"Rex, I just want to say thank you. For coming up here with me, even if it was for a little bit." Nia said.
"Of course, Nia." Rex said, and then they both began to leave her room and go downstairs.
Now, it seemed as everyone from both gangs was over there. Everyone was pretty much walking around and conversing, and Zeke really had taken over the DJ booth, and he was setting up everything. Then, Zeke noticed rex and Nia descending the staircase together. Zeke grinned, and then grabbed a microphone.
"Hello everybody!" Zeke said into the microphone, and everyone turned to him. "Alright everyone! I want to announce the arrival the Rex and Nia! Now, to start this party, I want Rex and Nia to be the only ones on the dance floor for this first song! This first song is dedicated to them and their love, which ended the fighting between our gangs!"
"Is he serious?" Nia whispered to Rex.
"Don't worry, I'll kill him later," Rex whispered back. "But now, let's just go with it."
Rex extended his hand out to her, and she took it. They walked over to the dance floor, and the music started. Rex didn't recognize the song, but he couldn't care less about the song. He was with Nia. And that was all that mattered. As the song grew faster, so did their dancing, and soon, Rex and Nia were dancing like there was no tomorrow.
