Midoriya clutched his fingers into a tight fist.

He hadn't broken it that time. He'd somehow managed to avoid hurting himself.

A smile began to pull at the corner of his lips.

This was good.

He could keep fighting so long as he didn't break his body. His gaze drifted up towards the beast standing in front of him.

"It... didn't hurt him?" He spoke the words out loud.

"Midoriya, duck!" He heard Kagome cry out from behind him. He sank down as she'd demanded. A rush of air blew over the top of his head, then the beast gave a mighty roar of pain.

"Now move! Get away from it!"

He didn't have time to think. His body reacted in instinct.

Kagome launched herself forward. She swiped her hand from the ground towards the air. A wall of crystals broke the space between them and the villains.

"Midoriya, I need you and Tsu to get Eraser." The young woman slid to a stop beside him. "I'll heal what wounds I can but he's down for the count."

She clutched her fingers into a fist, "I'll keep the barrier up until the teachers arrive. I need you to keep everyone else safe during that time."

Midoriya felt his throat constrict, "But my power is..."

Soft fingers gripped at his shoulder firmly.

"More than enough," She lowered her voice. "Even if you can't control it, that quirk of yours is a lot like All Might's. I'm not asking you to fight recklessly. Just use your ability to help everyone escape. Think you can do that?"

He could feel her hand shaking. Even now she was terrified. Yet Kagome was still going to fight. She was going to face those villains on her own.

A cold feeling settled into the pit of his stomach.

No.

He wouldn't leave her here!

"I'll fight with you." His brows furrowed with determination. "You can't fight on your own. You're already starting to come down with a fever. Plus your body is still recovering from that old wound."

His gaze drifted to the space above her hip.

She never told him what'd really happened either.

Kagome always had a habit of holding the rest of their class at an arm's length. He knew that she was leery about bonding with other people. Still, he wished that she would rely on them a little more.

"I'm staying right beside you." He held up his clenched fist, "I'll support you."

The young woman's features softened. A faint smile pulled at her lips as she met his gaze.

He didn't deny the small feeling of warmth that suddenly flushed his face.

"You're an idiot," The words were soft as she spoke. "But thank you."

His own lips stretched into a thin smile.

"You can count on me!"
