Liam's POV
I felt so trapped. I was surrounded by complete darkness, except for some light escaping through the gaps of a closed door sitting in front of me. I knew exactly where it led, and I was reluctant to walk in, hoping it was not my only way out of this place. I ran in all directions away from the door, however it all resulted pointless, ending up back in the same place I began after thinking I had finally made some progress.
Whenever I ran away from the door, I felt as though a blunt object was being forced further and further into my chest, causing some immense pain. Considering the fact that I knew was dreaming, I thought I would be relieved of physical discomfort, let alone pain, but that was the least of my worries at the moment. One thing seemed to bother me the most; being closer to the door made me feel the least pain, yet it made me feel so anxious. I knew that walking through this door would make me relive things I didn't want to remember, but I also thought that this was my only way out.
I had already tried to force myself awake many times, but every time fell short as my legs would become weak and give out, causing me to fall onto the floor. My last attempt resulted in the most pain I have ever felt in my entire life. I thought I had gotten so close to waking up, but I fell over again, an agonising pain in my chest as I struggled to breathe. I had laid down on my back for a while, trying to gain my breath back but it was no use. It wasn't until I felt the sharp pain start being relieved from my chest that I was able to gain my breath back. I have had a splitting headache ever since, and I haven't had the energy to try wake up again. Granted, my motivation to do so had dwindled, realising that forcing myself awake was only going to result in me failing.
I sat down next to the door, beginning to think that it would inevitably be my only way out. I sighed heavily, thinking out loud.
"I don't want to see you again," I said, feeling as if tears were falling down my face even though it was dry, "I can't see you again." I dropped my face into my hands, shaking my head at the same time, but I knew that I had to do it. I was not going to get anywhere had I stayed in this room. I stood up and turned towards the door, raising my hand to grip the door-handle. I pushed the handle down, and it swung open. I was immediately met with a very bright light, causing me to raise my arm above my eyes. My eyes soon adjusted to the lighting, being met with the memories I used to love so much popping up right in front of me, but now…
Humphrey's POV
"…It was just painful," Charlotte said, explaining the events that had occurred the previous night to mum and dad, "I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life." I didn't say anything as I picked at my breakfast. I didn't have anything to say nor did I have the energy to anything the first place. I was incredibly tired, mentally and physically, and I was anxious to see the state Liam was in.
"Well, we're here for the both of you guys. We always will be," Mum said, and after a slight pause, she continued, "I know that neither of us experienced something like this before, but we are here to experience it with you, and help you through it to the best of our abilities."
"Well, thank you," Charlotte said, wiping a tear off her cheek. I had given up on trying to eat, so I excused myself from the table, explaining to Charlotte that we can leave whenever she is ready, however my dad cut me off.
"We'll take you guys today. I think we need to see him today," Dad said, to which I just nodded.
Time Skip – The Next Day, Sunday
I opened the hospital room door, holding a small tray of hot beverages for some of the people occupying the room, being careful not to spill anything. I sat the cardboard tray onto the table that stood before the hospital bed Liam was occupying, allowing myself to be able to grab the cups and hand them out. I read out the names of the drinks written on the lids of the cups, each person either raising their hand or saying it was their drink, until there was one left, which happened to be my coffee.
The room felt rather full today, having had both mine and Kate's parents in the room, including the usual occupants, Lilly, Charlotte, Ethan, Kate, and me. I was surprised to see that the room actually had space for everyone, considering the size of an average hospital room.
Eve and Winston exchanged some casual chatter with my parents, as they had not met up together in a while. 'What a way to meet up,' I thought to myself. I wasn't exactly paying attention to any of the words exchanged throughout the room. I was zoning out quite a lot, and I was struggling to stay focused on anything for more than a few minutes. Luckily, we don't have school today as it is a Saturday, so at least I don't have to worry about falling behind in any classes from my lack of focus.
I watched over Liam as he lay in the hospital bed, and as I stared, my eyes locked onto something on his face. I witnessed a single tear stream down his face as he laid there, motionless. 'Is he seeing something? Dreaming, even?' I asked myself in my head. It seemed odd that he was tearing up, but I didn't say anything, as nobody else had seemed to notice.
A knock at the door drew everyone's attention, the door also opening soon after the knock was sounded. The doctor who had told us Liam was on life-support popped her head through the door. I assumed she must've been the doctor assigned to Liam's case, if that was a thing in this hospital.
"Hey guys. Sorry to bother ya," She said, walking in. She was holding a clipboard, starting to do what looked to be some routine checks. A surprised look grew on her face as she was looking at his vitals on the monitor. I seemed to be the only person watching what she was doing, as everyone else seemed to have gone back to what they were previously doing before she entered. Kate was sitting with a book in her hand, her eyes following across the lines of the content, while Lilly had her headphones in, holding her phone horizontally as she watched a video. Charlotte was still sitting beside Liam, gripping his hand, and talking to him silently. She didn't seem to be expecting any answers from him, but she still continued anyway.
The doctor made a couple flicks with a ballpoint pen on a sheet of paper, looking up and down the page as she seemed to be in deep thought. She clipped the pen to her the clipboard, turning to everyone before speaking up.
"Okay, so I apologise for interrupting," She said, gaining everyone's attention, "But I think I have some news about Liam here." She looked up from the clipboard, checking to see if everyone was paying attention, which they were.
"Well, I think we may be able to take Liam off life-support," She said, Charlotte and Ethan perking up immediately.
"Really?" They both said in unison, to which she nodded.
"Yep. His brain seems to be turning responsive readings, and his breathing, heartrate, and blood pressure all seem to be good. There's a couple other things too, but I won't bore you all with the details," She said, "So do you guys want to do it? Well, whoever is fam-"
"Yes! Yes, please!" Charlotte interrupted, however, mum stopped her.
"Honey, this isn't up to you," Mum said.
"Yeah, I apologise, but this is up to the family of Liam," She said, moving towards Ethan, "And if I remember correctly, you are his brother?"
"Yes, yes I am," He sighed. It was quite obvious that he didn't want to make the decision himself, as he was very reluctant to answer. I can only assume that the doctor noticed and piped up.
"Listen, you don't have to make this decision now," She said, but Ethan stopped her.
"Take him off."
Liam's POV
I continued walking through the memories, wishing I didn't see some of them and struggling not to fall to the ground in a crying fit. However, I coped, making my way through while being unable to avert my gaze from some of the more notable memories I had. As I walked further and further through the hallways of my memories, I heard footsteps ahead of me. It startled me, due to the fact that I expected to be alone on this walk. I sped up my pace to try catch up to whatever was ahead of me, eventually stumbling upon the thing making the noises. We were met face to face, metres apart from each other. My eyes went wide as I struggled to think of words to say, recognising her face immediately upon seeing it.
"Hi, Liam," She said, awkwardly looking down at the ground with her gorgeous blue eyes, her short, blonde hair waving slightly as it glistened from the light surrounding us. I was stuck in a state of shock until I finally opened my mouth.
"V-Vivian?" I asked, stuttering on my words, walking closer to her, while she did the same. We stopped mere centimetres apart from each other, unable to help staring into her eyes once more, gaining the same feeling I used to years ago. I felt tears start welling in my eyes as I brought her into a tight hug, realising how much I had missed her voice. She wrapped her arms around me as I began crying onto her shoulder.
"It's been a while," She said softly.
