...

"Hey Sam! Bucky!" Steve called lit as the two came into the living room. "Can I talk to you guys for a sec?"

"Uhhhhh sure?" Sam replied sitting down as Bucky followed suit.

"Okay," Steve clasped his hands together. "So as you (hopefully) know, my birthday is tomorrow, and I was, uh, wondering if as a gift maybe for the entire day—until the clock hits midnight—you guys could try and get along?"

There was a moment of shocked silence and then the protesting started.

"See I don't know if—"

"Are you actually serious—"

"I mean, I can but I don't know about him—"

"I don't know if my body will allow that—"

Sam and Bucky delved further into arguing with each other, completely oblivious to Steve trying to get their attention.

"GUYS!" Steve finally yelled. He then deployed his best puppy eyes. "Please? For me?"

Sam and Bucky side-eyed each other and sighed.

"Fine," they both agreed.

"Steve clapped his hands, "Great! Now shake on it!"

(Needless to say there was a lot more grumbling and time spent before it actually got done)

...

July 4th

Steve hummed as he made his way down to the kitchen, looking forward to breakfast. However, when the doors opened he was greeted with the sight of Sam and Bucky engaged in a heated glaring match. At the sound of the door opening and the realization of who was stepping in, they quickly jumped apart, plastering wide smiles on their faces.

"Steve!" Bucky greeted, handing him a plate of pancakes. "Happy birthday!"

"Yeah, happy birthday man!" Sam joined in offering him some orange juice. "We made pancakes somewhat successfully so we hope you enjoy!"

"Steve beamed, "You made them together!?" Sam and Bucky glanced at each other.

"Yeeeeeah," Bucky finally said. "Bird brai—I mean Sssssam" he changed the name with a grimace, "and I worked together." He and Sam both gave an enthusiastic thumbs up while their fake smiles grew wider.

"That's awesome! I'm so proud of you guys!" Steve exclaimed as he took a bite of pancake and pretended not to notice Sam flick some leftover batter on Bucky's face.

...

"Hey it's my turn to pick the show!"

"No, it was yours last time!"

"Ummmmm wrong! Last time you made us watch cake wars!"

"Well, do you think your natgeo is any better!?"

"Yo! Watch it witless soldier! Respect the planet and the creatures on it!"

"I'm just saying, do we really need to know why naked mole rats are hairless and how they live their lives!?"

"Well—no—but—that's not the point!"

The loud argument echoed down the hall and Steve sighed before putting on a smile and entering the living room.

"Hey guys! What are you doing on this fine, conflict free day?" he asked sweetly.

They both shot up from where they were wrestling on the floor.

"Heyyyyyyyy Steve!" Sam said, voice dripping with enthusiasm as he kicked Bucky's leg away from him. "We were just having a polite, friendly, civilized, discussion about who's turn it was to pick a show!"

"Yeah! Exactly! Most definitely!" Bucky agreed, smoothing down his mussed up hair. "Totally civil."

Steve hummed and said "Alright, then I hope you don't mind if i join your completely civilized discussion then?"

Both Bucky and Sam's expressions deflated but they added extra cheer to their voices as they exclaimed "Sure! Of course!"

"Great!" Steve sat on the other end of the couch, forcing Bucky and Sam to be next to each other, resulting in a shoving match to figure out spacing.

...

This happened several times throughout the rest of the day, with Steve coming in and causing the two to drop their arguments. He was incredibly proud of them, as they managed to stop themselves whenever he was in and tried to minimize the amount of things they argued over. However, as midnight neared he started to get more and more nervous about what would happen when the day, and the promise, finally ended. As the clock ticked closer to twelve Steve started to make his way to the living room where he knew they both were. He wanted to be there to try and break things up in case shit really went down from the both of them not being able to, well, "express themselves" that day. As he stopped outside of the door, he watched his watch count down.

5, 4, 3, 2, he braced himself, 1.

As soon as the clock hit twelve he heard a crash and a shriek that sounded a lot like Sam.

"DUDE DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST THROW A CELING FAN AT ME!?"

Steve sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as the yelling continued.

"OH IT IS SOOOOOOO ON!"
