A/N- So I am writing this chapter as I sit in a Hospital room as I get an Iron Infusion. It is going to be a long hour but hopefully, I can get a lot written. I think Thalia has been sick long enough so at some point in this chapter I will get her to take the medicine but it probably won't be until the next chapter where she is fully better. Enjoy this chapter.
Astrid's Pov:
I was walking towards Hiccup's house when I banged into Ruffnut. "Good morning Astrid." Ruffnut greeted me. "Moring Ruff," I said. "Where are you off to this morning?" She asked me. "I am on my way to see Hiccup and Thalia," I said to her.
"Do you mind if I tag along?" She asked me. "Um… Yea sure that is fine." I said. Then carried on walking to the house on the hill with my best friend beside me.
"So, I have not seen you around the Village much since Hiccup announced that he had a Daughter," Ruff said. "Well, I was helping look after Thalia and learning on how to be a Mother in such short notice," I explained.
"Fair enough. I mean you have just been thrown into Motherhood since you will be Marrying Hiccup." Ruff stated. I nodded to agree as I could not think of anything to say. "So, what is she like?" Ruff asked me.
"Who?"
"Hiccup's daughter." She answered. "Well, it is hard to say what she is like since all she has done is sleep since she is not well. But she seems to be a lovely girl. She asked me other day if I was going to marry her Father and if I was going to be her Mumm." I told her.
"What did you say to that?" Ruff asked. "Well I was shocked at the question first then I told her that I will be marrying Hiccup one day and if she wanted to, she could call me Mummy," I explained.
"What happened after that? Has she called you Mummy yet?"
"After that, I sang her to sleep then I fell asleep not long after that. And yes, she has called Mummy. She could me Mummy last night." I said as I smiled. "Aww, that is so cute. Can I meet her?"
"Well that is up to Hiccup and not me. But I would say he would be fine with it. But probably best once she is better." I said. She nodded. "Well, I better go and find my other half to see what trouble he has caused this morning. See you later Astrid." Ruff said.
"Bye Ruff," I replied then I watched as she walked off in another direction. I then carried on to the Chief's house.
Once I got to the Chief's house, I knocked on the door and waited a couple of seconds for the door to open. When the door open Valka was standing there. "Good Morning Astrid."
"Good Morning Valka." I greeted back. She then stepped aside and let me into the house. "Hiccup is just upstairs trying to wake Thalia up. Thalia was up most of the night vomiting, so Hiccup has not had much sleep." She said.
"Is she alright?" I asked. "I am not too sure. I know Dagur and Heather bought back the recipe for the healing herbs but let's just hope that Gothi can make it soon for her." I nodded to agree with her. "I will head upstairs then to see if he needs any help," I said.
Valka nodded then turned to walk back into the kitchen. "Oh, Astrid. Meet me at the Arena with the gang after lunch." Valka said. I nodded then walked up the stairs to Hiccup's room. I knocked on the door and heard the slight 'come in.' I took that as an invitation to walk in.
As I walked into his room. He was sitting on the edge of his bed placing a wet cloth onto Thali's forehead. He turned to me. "Morning M'Lady." He said. I could see the tiredness in his eyes.
"Morning Hiccup," I said as I walked up beside him and placed my hand on his shoulder. I kissed Hiccup on his cheek, then I bent down to place a kiss on Thalia's head and that was when I noticed how pale she looked.
"How is she?" I asked him. "She is not too good. She has been up vomiting most of the night and her fever is getting worse. Gothi really needs to hurry up with the healing herbs." He said. I felt for him.
I may not quite understand the meaning of being a parent just yet and I know I will one day. But realised how hard this must be for Hiccup. To watch your only child, get sicker by the day and not knowing what to do about it all. I sat down beside him on the bed.
"She will get better Hiccup. She is strong just like her father is, and she will have so much to live for once she is better. We will get through this together." I said as I laid my head onto his shoulder. He laid his head on top on mine and wrapped his arm around me.
"Thank you, Astrid. What would I do without you?" he said before his head to kiss me on the lips. "So, what is the plan for the day?" I asked once we pulled away from the kiss.
"Well, the plan was to spend this afternoon in the Forge helping Gobber. But now with what has happened to Thali overnight. I don't think I will be going to the Forge." He said. "Hiccup you should go to the Forge I can stay and look after her for a while." I said as I turned his head so he would look at me.
"But you are busy today. You have to go and meet my Mother at the Arena." He said. "But that is not until after lunch. You have been stressed since you got back, and you need some time to relax and we both know that being in the Forge can and will help." I said.
"I don't have time to relax Astrid. Not when my daughter is very sick and not when two of my riders have been attacked by Dragon Hunters." He said starting to raise his voice.
"Keep your voice down or you will wake her." I demanded. "You can't do everything Hiccup. Sometimes you need time to relax so you can gather your thoughts and look at things from a different view." I added.
"Plus, you know she will be fine. Now go to the Forge before I drag you there. Thali and I will be fine and if I need help your Mother is only just downstairs." I said as I pulled him off his bed and pushed him towards the door.
He tried to fight against me but I of course won. "But Astrid…"
"Don't Astrid me Hiccup. If something happens, I will send someone to go and get you. I promise." I said. He finally gave in and nodded. "Fine, I will go to the Forge. But let me know if she gets worse."
"I promise." I said again before kissing him than pushing him out off his bedroom. "You too Toothless. You are going with him, so out you go." I said waving Toothless out of the room. I got a grumbled from him as he left.
Once I heard the door closed downstairs, I went back over to the bed and sat near Thali and stroke her head as she slept.
Hiccup's Pov
After Astrid kicked me and Toothless out of the house. I thought about what she said about me needing to relax. I knew she was right, but I just can't at the moment not with the very thing going on. "Come on Toothless. Let's go on a flight. I need to clear my head before I go do any work in the Forge." I said to my best pal in dragonised. Toothless jumped around soon as I mentioned the word flight. Toothless loves it when we go on our flights as we do whatever we like and go wherever as well. "Alright settle down bud." I said to him.
Once Toothless had finally settled down I then climbed onto his back and gave him a nudge so he could take off. "Where to Hiccup?" Toothless asked me. "Let's just see where we go," I said back.
We were just flying around Berk when Toothless asked me, "Are you alright Hiccup?"
"I don't know Toothless. I have so much on my mind at the moment. I have a daughter who is extremely sick, and she gets sicker by the hour. I also have the attack on two of my riders from the Dragon Hunters then on top of that I also have to design a ring so I can ask Astrid to marry me." I said with a sigh.
"Everything will be fine Hiccup and it will all work out. Astrid is right you know about your need to relax." He said. "I know she is right. But I don't have time to relax Bud. You know that."
"I do know that. But you have to take time for yourself. I always try to tell you that, but you never listen to me." He said. I rolled my eyes and the not listening part. "Well, you don't listen to me either Bud." I say back. Which he just grumbles too.
It was an hour later when we landed back on Berk after our flight and I actually felt better for it. It helped me to clear my head and now I was ready to go and design a ring for Astrid. But first I decided to go and check on my Father and see how they are going with building the house that I had asked to be built.
"Come on let's go and check on Dad to see how the house building is going then we will go to the Forge," I said in Norse to Toothless. Then we headed up the hill towards the forest where the house is getting built.
"Hey, Dad." I greeted once I was close enough to him. "Morning Son. How is my Granddaughter this morning after being up all night?" Dad asked me. "She wasn't too good this morning. But she was still sleeping when I left the house." I said to him.
"I am surprised that you would leave her after last night." He said. "Well, I didn't have much of a choice. Astrid came over and basically told me to go to the Forge to relax and clear my mind from everything. She basically said that if I did not leave the house, she would drag me to the Forge herself." I explained why rubbing the back of my neck with my hand. Dad laughed at my explanation.
"She is right thou." He said. "Why does everyone say she is right. Even if I know she is." I said. "Because Son, Women are always right." He said. I just grumbled at him.
"Well, I better get to the Forge and help Gobber out for a bit and design that ring that I need to make. Will see you later Dad."
"Bye Son."
After speaking to my Father Toothless and I headed to the Forge. I was thinking about how I was going to design the ring for Astrid. When Toothless nudged my hand with his head, getting my attention to let me know we were at the Forge. "Thanks, Bud," I said.
Toothless curled up at the door of the Forge since he is too big to come in with me, so I leave him to it as I walk into the Forge where Gobber is already pounding away at a sword.
"Hey, Gobber."
"Hey, Lad." Gobber greeted me. "What brings you here today?" He asked me. "Just come to relax and make something."
"Is my room still here?" I asked my mentor. "It sure is Lad. I never could get rid of it." He told me. I nodded to him as I headed to my room in the back.
I sat down at my desk and pulled out some paper and some charcoal and started to draw some designs on how I wanted Astrid's engagement ring to look like. After a few designs, I finally designed one that I knew Astrid would like. It was simple but still very pretty.
It will be a plain gold band with two small Diamonds in the middle. Then for her wedding ring will be a plain gold band with three small Diamond and my ring will just be plain gold.
Then it was time to go and make the rings. I went back out to the Forge area and found the materials that I needed and got started on Astrid's engagement ring.
Two hours later:
After two hours the rings were finally done. I was pretty happy with how they turned out. I then packed up my gear and said a quick bye to Gobber before walking out of the Forge to Toothless. I had put the rings into my saddlebag to keep them safe and then I woke Toothless up so we could get back to the house.
"Come on Toothless let's get back to the house so, Astrid can meet Mum at the Arena. Toothless stretched before standing up and following on behind me. As we were walking home Heather came running up to me.
"Hiccup there you are I have been looking everywhere for you. Where were you?" Heather asked me. "Hello to you too Heather. I was at the Forge making Astrid's engagement ring and the wedding rings." I explained.
"Oh, really can I see please." She asked forgetting why she came to me in the first place. "Uh later. But first, why don't you tell me what you wanted to tell me when you first came up to me." I asked her.
"Oh, yea right… Gothi wanted me to tell you that the Healing herbs are ready for Thalia to take. She is on her way your house now as we speak to give it to Thalia. I just thought you would want to be there when she does give the herbs to Thalia." She explained to me.
"Of Course, I want to be there. Thank you for telling me this Heather and it is about time it is ready. Thank you, Heather. I better get back to the house now." I said thanking her before running off to the house.
Once I got to the house I ran inside and up to my room where Mum, Astrid and Gothi were. They were gathered around my bed where Thalia was sleeping.
"We are going to have to wake her up so she can take the medicine," Mum said reading what Gothi had drawn. "Okay, I can wake her," Astrid said going over to the bed. I came upon the other side of the bed and sat near her head.
"Thali come on Honey; you have to wake up now," Astrid said in a gentle voice. Thali moved slightly but did not wake up. "Thalia Baby wakes up. Come on Kiddo." I said as I brushed some hair out of her face. She moved a bit more before her eyes fluttered a bit then she closed them again.
"Thalia come on Honey." Astrid shook her gently. This time she opened her eyes. But I could tell that she wanted to shut them again. I felt bad for my daughter she has never been this sick before. So she doesn't know what to do.
"Hey, sleepyhead," I said to her. "Daddy, Mummy," Thalia said in a whisper. "Afternoon Honey. We have some medicine for you to take to make you all better okay." Astrid told her. She nodded her head slightly. I helped Thali sit up and she leant against me due to having no energy.
Astrid took the medicine from Gothi as Gothi started to draw once again. "She says she has to have two spoonfuls now than two spoonfuls tonight then the same in the morning. The recipe does not say how long it will take to work. It could take overnight or a couple of days but she had to keep taking this medicine until she has fully recovered." Mum said translating from Gothi.
"Thank you very much Gothi," I said thanking her. She nods her head towards me then walks out of the room. Astrid then pours a spoonful of the medicine on to a spoon that Mum had gone and got and held it up to Thalia's mouth.
"Come on Sweetheart," Astrid said as she put the spoon into Thali's mouth. "Yucky Mummy. No more Mummy. No more." She said. "I know Honey. I know but you have to take it so you can get better. And you have to get better so you can go flying with your Father and go and play with the other kids in the village. Okay. So just one more spoonful for now." Astrid said trying to get Thali to open her mouth again.
"Thalia you need to take the medicine," I said. But she would not have a bar of it at all. "Would you do it for Bubbles here," I said holding her toy in front of her. She tries to reach forward to the toy, but I pulled it away from her.
"Daddy. I want Bubbles." She moaned. "Well if you have another spoonful of medicine then you can have Bubbles," I said trying to bargain with my daughter. After a few minutes of pouting, she finally let Astrid give her another spoonful of medicine.
"No more Mummy." She said. "Not till tonight. Here…" She started to say when she took her toy from my hands and said, "Here are Bubbles. You can have him back now. You were very brave Sweetheart." She said as she passed the toy to Thali then kissed her on the head.
"I have to go now Honey but I will be back very soon."
"No Mummy don't go. Please don't go." Thali said begging for Astrid not to go. "I have to Honey. I have to meet your Grandmother in the Arena. But I promise I will be back. In the meantime, you and Daddy are going to rest and I will be back later to give you your medicine and to say goodnight to you. How about that." Astrid said to Thalia.
Once Thalia finally gave in. Astrid kissed her one more time before kissing me then she left to go and meet Mum and the Arena.
"Move over," I said to Thali once Astrid had left. "Let me hop in beside you," I said. Thali moved over and let me hop in beside her. Once I was lying down, she moved to snuggle up against me and I just held her as I laid there with her in my arms.
Valka's Pov:
After I gave a spoon to Astrid, I then left the house to start heading over to the Arena to get the dragons ready for their new riders. When I walked into the Arena the dragons were all curled up sleeping. Which I thought was cute.
"Hey, Cloudjumper," I said walking up to my dragon. I then patted him on the head. I haven't spent much time with him in a couple of days due to everything that had been going on with my Granddaughter and with Ingrid and Bjorn. But now that Thalia has got the right Medicine now, I am hoping to spend some time with him.
"What do you say about going a very quick flight one I have set things up here for this afternoon," I said to Cloudjumper. Cloudjumper grumbled before nudging me with his head as this was his way of telling me that he agreed.
So, I hurried around the Arena feeding the dragons. I went over to pat Sunset and Bluey since they have not left the Arena since we got to Berk. I should probably remember to take Sunset and Bluely for a fly so they can stretch their wings too.
"Come on Sunset and Bluey. You are coming with Cloudjumper and me for a quick flight around Berk. Before I have to teach some Viking on how to ride a dragon. Sunset and Bluey stood up and followed on behind me as I walked over to Cloudjumper.
Cloudjumper bent down so it was easier for me to climb on then we took off to the sky with Bluey and Sunset behind us. We did a quick lap around Berk and out to sea before landing back in the Arena, where Astrid and the others had just shown up.
I jumped over Cloudjumper's back and headed towards the group. "Welcome to Dragon training. You will each get your own dragon that you will train to form a bond with." I said explaining to the group.
"So, do we get to choose our own dragons or what?" My Nephew Snoutlout asked me. "No, you don't get to choose your own dragon Snoutlout the Dragon chooses you." I said pointing to the dragons that were behind me.
I moved out of the way as the dragons that Hiccup had bought back from the Edge moved closer to the group. "Okay, so when a Dragon gets closer to you. I want you to remove any weapon you have in you. This will let the dragon know that you are not a threat."
"Then put your hand out in front of you and turn your head away from the dragon. And let the dragon come to you. You will know when they trust you when they put their head to your hand." I explained.
I stepped out of the way as the Dragons came forward. I watched as Astrid did what I said and the Nadder that was in front of her put its head into her hand. I heard a giggle come from Astrid when she realised that she bonded with a dragon.
"Well done Astrid. Now give her a name. By giving your dragon a name will make your bond stronger." I said. Astrid named her Nadder Stormfly. Fishlegs names his Gronckle Meatlug, Ruffnut and Tuffnut had gotten a Zippleback which they called one head Barf and the other head Belch. And Snoutlout got the Monstrous Nightmare who he called Hookfang.
"Now it is time to feed them. Each of you takes a fish and hold it out to your Dragon. Like this." I said showing them how to do it. Which they all got the hang off. "Right the next thing is to learn how to fly on your Dragons," I said. I taught them on to get on their Dragons and how to steer to the left, right, up and down.
A couple of hours later the gang were doing very well with their training so I decided to call it for the day. "Alright, that is it. That is enough for the day. Go home and take your Dragon's with you so you can bond some more. Rest up and keep working on your flying and please if you are going to go and practice flying please do it over a lake or something so you have something to catch you if you full off." I said.
They all said thank you to me and every one part from Astrid had left the Arena with their Dragons. "I am guessing you are coming back to the house for dinner tonight?" I asked her as we both walked out of the Arena with Stormfly and Cloudjumper behind us.
"Yea. That is if you don't mind Valka. I promised Thali I would be back later on." She said. I knew Thalia has taken a liking to Astrid and I guess Astrid is like the Mother that she never had. So, I guess it all works out in the end. We carried on walking through the Village in silent.
I opened the door once we got to the house to find Hiccup in the Kitchen once again cooking Dinner. "Evening Son."
"Hey Mum, M'Lady. How Dragon training go?" He asked me. "It went fine. Got them their Dragon's and flying kind of." I said. "I'm not that bad of a flyer Valka," Astrid said to me with a giggle. "No, you weren't too bad Astrid, but the others well let's say they had a lot of falls," I explained.
"Well sounds like a fun afternoon then." He said. "What did you do for the rest of the afternoon?" Astrid asked Hiccup. "Not much just caught up on some sleep that basically was it." He said.
"Where is your Father?" I asked him. "He said he was going to go to the Great Hall for Dinner with Gobber tonight and that he will be back later on." He said. I nodded to let him know that I understood. Then we sat down at the table to eat dinner.
Astrid's Pov:
As we sat down for dinner I asked, "Where is Thali. Does she not want any food?" I asked. "No, I wasn't going to make her eat. She is in a grumpy mood for who knows why." Hiccup said.
"Maybe she is just sick of feeling unwell all the time and she probably just wants to be able to go and play with the other kids," I said. "Astrid is probably right their Hiccup," Val said backing me up.
I watched as he nodded his head as he dishes out Dinner. "I will go up to her after dinner and get her to take her medicine again," I said. Then we sat in silence as we ate dinner.
After Dinner, I helped clear the table then headed towards the stairs up to Hiccup's room. When I walked into the room, Thali was lying away playing with her toy. She didn't hear me come in. "Hey, Darling," I said as I walked over to the bed.
"Mummy your back." She said happily. That was when I noticed that she was starting to get some colour back into her cheeks. So, the medicine is obviously is working which is good. "Did you have a good afternoon with your Father?" I asked her.
"Yes, we stayed in bed all day." She said. "Did you now. That sounds like fun." I said. "Mummy, when can I go and play with the other kids?" She asked me. "Once you are feeling better then you can go and play with the other children in the Village," I said.
I reached over to the side of the bed and picked the medicine up as well as the spoon. "Come on, it is time for your medicine again," I said to her. She kept shaking her head. "No, no more medicine Mummy." She said as kept on shaking her head.
I sighed knowing we were going to go through this again as we did earlier on. "I know you don't want to take it, Darling. But you have to if you want to get better Honey." I told her.
She finally gave in and let me give her the two spoonsful of the medicine. "Good girl," I said. I laughed at her face that she pulled after the second spoonful. I put the medicine away and told her to move over so I could hop in beside her.
I leaned up against the headboard of the bed as I stroke her cheek gently as she struggled to keep her eyes open. "I love you, Mummy." Whispered before she fell asleep. "I love you, Baby," I whispered back then kissed her on the forehead.
I waited for a couple more minutes to make sure she was asleep before heading back downstairs to Hiccup. When I got downstairs, I saw that Hiccup was sitting on the couch in front of the fire alone. "She has taken her medicine and she is now asleep," I said as I walked over to him and sat down beside him.
He wrapped his arm around me, and I snuggled into his side. "Did she take the medicine without a fight?" He asked me. "Of course not. She did not want to take it but I told her that she needed to get better so she could go and play with the other kids soon."
Hiccup kissed the side of my head as he pulled me closer to him. "Astrid thank you for taking care of Thalia for me and thank you for accepting her as your daughter." He said. "Hiccup you don't have to thank me. I love Thalia very much as if she were my own. I will always be here to help take care of her." I said.
"That is why I love you."
"I love you too Hiccup," I said. "Where is your Mother?" I asked after a couple of minutes of silence. "Once you went upstairs, she said she was heading to the Great Hall to see my Father." He said. 'So, we have the house to ourselves with a child upstairs. I could get used to this.' I thought to myself.
I sat there in his arms in front of the fire not speaking and just being in each other's company.
A/N- So I finished this Chapter the day after my Iron Infusion. It will also be the longest Chapter that I have written so far. Let me in the comments on ideas on how Hiccup should propose to Astrid. I was thinking of Hiccup asking her in the cove. Do you think i should do that or do you have other ideas let me know.
