Return To Maine Chapter 28

A/N: It has been such a long time since I have updated on this and you have my sincere apologies. I had eye surgery on my right eye and still need it on my left. I lost my sister in August and my nephew just day before yesterday. I am still grappling with the losses. Please bear with me and I will try and get back on track. Thank you all for your patience. Sorry this is so short, but I hear FF has made some changes and not sure if they will post this or let me continue. We'll see how it goes.

On her way home from The Magic Bottle, she stopped at the 24 hour CVS drug store 2 blocks from her apartment and made her purchase.

A cartoon image of Ryan and Espo's faces blowing bubbles from both ends floated before her eyes and she laughed.

Was what she was doing immature? No doubt about it. College level prank? Most definitely, cliched? Absolutely! But she'd teach them about eating other people's food.

Entering her apartment, she kicked off her shoes and set the bag from the drug store and her purse on the couch where she could grab them on her way out the door in the morning.

She moved to the bedroom and changed into her pajamas , plugged her phone into the charger and crawled under the covers to wait for Rick's call.

It was just barely after 10:30 pm when her phone chimed with a Facetime message.

Clicking the button to accept the call, Rick's grinning image filled the screen.

"Hey," she greeted. "Sorry about going to sleep on you last night, but thank you."

" It's okay, sweetheart. I just wish I could have been there."

"Me too. How was your day?" she asked.

"Long and boring. Yours?"

" I nailed the bastard. We received video feed from a security cam down the hall from Pam's apartment that showed him removing a key from his wallet and entering her apartment and he didn't leave the apartment until 12:15, right in our window of death carrying a large black plastic lawn and leaf trash bag over his shoulder. And then Lanie called me with the tox and labs. Everything from his DNA on the body and the security footage implicated him. You can lie about a lot of things but DNA and that security footage does not lie. Finally he broke down and cried and confessed."

"So, he used a large lawn and leaf bag to move her body, but what I don't understand is why no one else saw him moving her. Surely, someone saw a man carrying a large lawn and leaf bag over his shoulder. I mean, this is Manhattan we're talking about. People are constantly moving about."

"That remains unclear, but I'll set Ryan and Espo on it first thing in the morning."

She told him about Ryan and Espo stealing her doughnuts and her plot for revenge.

"That's my girl! Oh, I wish I could be there to see that!"

"Don't worry.. You won't Miss a Thing. I have a small security cam that I can place in the flower arrangement on the counter and it will record everything."

"I can hardly wait to see it." he laughed.

They chatted for about an hour before saying goodnight and hanging up.

As tired as she had been the night before, her feet hit the floor running when her alarm sounded at 4:30 am the next morning.

There was no time to take a shower if she was to carry out her plan. Besides, being at the precinct that early would also allow her to get in a workout and shower afterwards in the gym before everyone came in.

Jumping into the first set of clothes her hands fell on in the closet, she hurriedly dressed and was out the door ten minutes later.

It was still very early and before the shop opened. More than likely, Sharon was just preparing to open the shop. But no matter. Sharon would open for her. She always did.

"Good morning, Sharon." Kate greeted as she entered the doughnut shop where all the cops went and she herself had patronized for years.

"Good morning, Kate. You're in early. What can I do for you?"

"Well, for starters, I need a box of 2 dozen mixed, 2 bear claws, an extra large grande vanilla latte with 2 pumps sugar free vanilla and I also need 2 Boston Cream filled doughnuts for Ryan and Espo, but without the filling."

Sharon looked surprised at that statement and asked, "Dare I ask why?"

"I'm pranking them for eating mine yesterday when Tori called me away to look at some footage."

Sharon, who knew the boys, too , laughed. "Sounds just like them. So what are you going to do?"

"Teach them a lesson, of course. Nothing too bad. I thought that maybe the nozzle of a shave cream can would fit perfectly into the little hole you use to pipe the cream."

"Well, you're in luck. It just so happens that I have some that haven't been filled yet. Be right back."

She went into the back and came back with the two unfilled pastries, placed them in a bag and finished filling the rest of Kate's order.

"Thank you, Sharon." she said, paying her for the order. "Have a great day and I'll see you later."

"You're welcome, Kate. Let me know how it goes."

Walking out of the shop, Kate was surprised that Sharon hadn't thought of a way to become her co-conspirator as the boys, pranksters that they are had pulled quite a few on her as well.

At the precinct, Kate sipped her latte and set about her work, placing the security cam in the foliage of the silk floral arrangement that set on the break room table, positioning it just right, checking the view and sound and then set about filling the doughnuts with shaving cream, placing them back in the white wax paper bag and set it on the table with no name and left for her workout and shower before people started coming in.

A/N: Thought I would end this chapter here and begin the next. Life has also been busy, but will try to get the next chapter out soon. I admit that it has been so long and I have lost focus and inspiration on this and am considering a rapid close to this and begin writing single episodics, prompts ... We'll see. Anyway, thank you for your patience and sticking with this as long as you have. Stay well and safe.
