"Goodnight Olivia."
"You're leaving?"
"I have to work. You know that."
"Can I have a kiss?"
"No."
"Are you coming to my ultrasound appointment tomorrow?"
"You have an appointment this week? I didn't know that."
"Yeah."
"I'll try to be there. I can't make any promises."
"Why can't you stay with me? You've been ignoring me since last week."
Fitz shrugged. "I can't stop working to spend time with you."
"So what are we now?"
"Occasional fuck buddies. That's what you want, right?"
"Are you seeing someone else?"
"Why do you care? You're single, right?"
It was hard for him to see her reaction to his words. He could see her shattering. He wanted to give her everything she wants, but he couldn't yet. It was too soon. He knew Olivia would push him away when she was ready to wear her single mom cape again. Treating Olivia like she didn't matter was a gamble. She could close herself off to him and look for another man to give her what she wants. The odds of her leaving him were low. If she was this needy in the beginning of her pregnancy, he knew she wouldn't be looking for anyone to replace him later in her pregnancy.
"I want a relationship."
"Without a marriage because you're scared of divorce."
"Why do we have to get married?"
"Are you really asking me that? Where do I start, Olivia?"
"We can be together every day without being married."
"Karen wants married parents, marriage would make a lot of things easier for both of us, you would get everything you want from me, do I need to continue?"
Olivia couldn't think of a snappy comeback. She looked him the eye and changed the subject. "Are we jogging in the morning?"
"We can. It will be difficult because I'm working late and getting up early."
"Do you want me to bring Karen?"
"Are you still paying for morning daycare?"
"Yeah. I didn't take her during fall break because it was pointless to drop her off at 5:30 in the morning and get her from the daycare at 7:00. Why deal with traffic for such a short break?"
"I think it's all a waste of money. How much are you paying the daycare every month?"
"It's not that expensive. It was kind of expensive before she started school."
"I can understand paying for daycare before she could start school. I don't know why you still give them money. Why can't she go with you to the grocery store?"
"Have you every grocery shopped with a six year old? I have to strategically plan my route in the store to avoid the candy aisle, and I hate shopping during the holidays when there are toys in the front of the store."
"It can't be that difficult. She wouldn't get anything if she misbehaves in the store. It's that simple."
"Sure, until she has an embarrassing tantrum. You can grocery shop with Karen for this house. I'll give you my grocery list."
"You're a principle who can't handle one kid. How do you have a job?"
"It's different. My students listen in school."
"They don't listen all of the time."
"No, that's when I send them home and let their parents deal with it. I can't do that with my own kid."
"How are you going to handle two?"
"I don't know yet. I love being a mom. I'll figure it out."
"I know you do. Your fridge has a lot of artwork, and Karen has toys in every room of your house."
Olivia laughed, "You don't want to see my garage."
"Toys are in all those boxes?"
"Yeah, I'm slowly getting rid of everything she doesn't play with."
"Did you have that many toys when you were a kid?"
"No. My mom bought presents for my birthday and Christmas. Kids these days are different. They want everything."
"I want four kids."
"Wow Fitz, that's a lot."
"It's only two more. We can handle it."
"I'll think about it. Let me get used to having two before we have anymore."
"So we are having more kids. I guess that means we're getting married soon?"
"Go home and work. I'll bring Karen jogging with us."
Fitz wasn't going to break his own rule. No matter how much he wanted to kiss her goodnight.
"Goodnight Livvie."
