Lady Paige and Walter had traveled about two hundred yards with Ralph along the lake when they finally found several large rocks. Paige looked over at Walter. "I suppose this is as good a spot as any."
Walter nodded as they stepped over and Paige sat down on the largest rock. Walter lifted Ralph up and then tossed him as high into the air as he could. He wanted to give him a moment of joy to try and buffer what was to come. Ralph laughed as his stomach was tickled by the sudden action. Walter grinned as he caught the young boy and hugged him before handing him over to sit on his Mom's lap.
Paige smiled as Walter squatted down in front of them.
Walter looked up at Ralph. "We both want you to know we are here for you Ralph. You mean the world to us and what we have to tell you will be confusing and painful, but it will be the truth."
Paige nodded. "We are going to Lancaster to speak with Lord Beyon. Walter told me that Lord Beyon has elite troops who can sneak into the kingdom of Krammer to get us information."
Ralph frowned.
Paige smiled as she looked at Walter.
Walter reached up and touched Ralph and Paige's hands. "You see Ralph, when we had lunch at the Inn last week I saw a painting of you and your Mom with a man. And it puzzled me, so I went to Cabe and we talked about it and about what I knew from a trip I took to the kingdom of Krammer."
"Sunday after I rode out of the Keep when I thought your Mom was ordering me to leave I couldn't just leave without trying to verify as much as I could and so I went to the temple in town and spoke with the Mistress there." Walter had continued.
Paige nodded as she spoke. "I arrived right after the Mistress cast a Commune spell. The wise Lady told us that the information Walter knew was true to a degree before she explained what had happened."
Walter's took hold of both of their hands.
Paige smiled sadly at Ralph. "While Drew, your Father is dead, he wasn't killed the way that we were told. His Father is an ancient Necromancer. And he has survived for centuries using his dark art to steal the bodies of his children. So Drew was killed when his soul was cast out of his body and his Dad used the same magic to put his soul into Drew's body. That was what you heard us talking about souls."
Ralph with eyes turning red looked at his Mom and Walter puzzled. "Why would grandpa do something like that and what information do you want them to get?" Ralph's lower lip trembled as he waited.
Walter released their hands and reached behind Ralph to rub his back.
Paige smiled sadly. "Sometimes people fear the unknown and death is an unknown for us. Some are able to find solace in their faith, such as we have with Athena. For some their fear drives them to seek out solutions that others wouldn't."
Walter nodded. "We don't want your grandfather to continue doing what he has been doing and he has to be punished for what he did to your Father. So we need information to know if he will be traveling anytime in the near future so that we can dispense justice on him. Hopefully we can do it without costing too many lives."
Paige nodded. "But if we do run into him while you are with us we don't want you to be shocked to think Drew is still alive. It will not be your Father but his Father in his body. No matter what he might say, he will not be your Father."
Ralph leaned into his Mom's shoulder and began crying.
Ray smiled from the shadows as he watched the camp. After recovering from being mad at Walter he'd set off after him. It was just his luck he had set off in the wrong direction. Almost a whole week wasted. He'd thought he finally caught up to Walter when he arrived at the town below the Keep only to be told that Lady Paige and her company had left the town a few days before he arrived.
He'd managed to liberate some coin from the citizens without their knowledge and purchased supplies before leaving town to follow after them. When he reached the outpost a few hours earlier he was relieved to hear that the Lady and her company were camped not too far away beside the lake.
He couldn't resist sneaking up on Walter so after breakfast he left his horse at the outpost and slipped into the shadow before going in search of the camp. When he first peered around one of the tents he was disappointed not seeing Walter. He started to leave thinking he found the wrong campsite when he saw Walter's mare tethered.
Ray grinned as he moved quietly through the shadows around the camp listening to everyone talking. He stopped as he saw an older man looking at a pocket watch. Ray grinned at the gold casing. He watched Cabe put it back into his pocket. Ray stepped over closer to Cabe and just as his hand dipped into the pocket of Cabe's robe a red boot came out of no where and it hit him in the forehead.
Ray cried out in pain as he staggered backwards and out of the shadows.
Everyone in the camp turned and gasped at Ray before another figure dressed in dark red leathers with medium brown hair in a pony tail emerged from the shadows. "How dare you prey upon travelers on the road to Lancaster, I'll see you swing on the gallows." They heard a female voice as she pointed at Ray.
"Now who in Hades is this?" Happy yelled as she jumped up.
Everyone else stood or stepped back as Sir Sylvester drew his sword. Cabe stared at the back of the woman. "May I know your name so I can thank you?"
She stood in a defensive stand with a dagger in each hand. Slowly she looked back with a smile and dark brown eyes. "You may call me Allie handsome."
Walter's head turned quickly as he picked up Happy's voice. "Something is wrong back at the camp Paige."
Ralph had finally stopped crying but Paige stood up and began walking with Walter back towards camp as she carried Ralph.
Cabe smiled at Allie. "Thank you Allie, if it wasn't for you who knows what this miscreant would have done."
"I'm not a miscreant." Ray complained.
Allie glared down at him. "You can tell it to the magistrate when I get you there."
Ray tried to slip back into the shadow but Allie cursed as she slipped quickly into the shadow and a moment later Ray stumbled back out and tripped over a chair as Allie emerged flying through the air towards him snarling.
Allie landed on top of Ray and they began struggling back and forth when Sir Sylvester pushed his sword blade down against Ray's throat and Ray froze feeling the cold steel against his neck.
Walter and Paige were about fifty yards away and his eyes went wide. "Allie?"
Allie looked up and smiled as she saw Walter.
Paige looked over at him as a twinge of jealousy sparked. "Friend of yours?"
Walter nodded. "She's a member of Lord Beyon's elite force."
Allie secured Ray's hands behind him and she grinned as she began walking towards Walter and Paige as they continued walking to the camp. She saw Walter's hand on the Paige's hip and her brow arched.
Walter smiled. "My Lady Paige, this is Allie. She is second lieutenant in the Lancaster elite force. Allie, this is my wife, the Lady Paige of Scorpion Keep and our son Ralph." Walter's arm slid on around Paige's waist as he pulled her firmly against him.
Allie smiled. "It is first lieutenant now. Walter the Bard, settling down? Never thought I would live to see that day. My Lady Paige, it is a privilege to meet you and your handsome son."
Paige smiled. "Thank you Allie. What brings a first lieutenant to the border area?" She reached out her right hand.
Allie shook her hand. "I'd stopped at the outpost for the night on my way back to Lancaster when I spotted a shifty character slip into the shadows. So I followed him and caught him about to pick your friend's pocket."
"Not true, I was just going to have some fun. I was trying to find my friend Walter." Ray yelled as he tried to look back behind him.
Walter frowned as he looked past Allie. "Ray? What are you doing here?"
Ray grunted. "I just told you, I was trying to find you."
Walter shook his head as they resumed walking back to camp.
"You really know this miscreant? I don't know why I would be surprised. You always did keep some questionable company from time to time." Allie teased.
Walter laughed. "Well I did make friends with you so I guess you would know."
Allie turned and punched his shoulder. "Hey now, I could be many things but questionable?"
Walter laughed as they walked into the camp.
Walter stepped around his friends and over to squat down in front of Ray. He shook his head. "What am I going to do with you Ray?"
"Let me go." Ray told him hopefully.
Walter shook his head. "Sorry, that would be up to my wife."
Allie had stepped over to Cabe and was smiling at him. She spun around when she heard Walter. "Excuse me? He's my prisoner. It is up to Lord Beyon how to deal with him."
Paige set Ralph in a chair at the table. "Actually Allie according to treaty, since it happened here in the borderlands and in my presence, it is my authority that is asserted."
Allie looked from Paige to Walter and back. "Fine, since it was your man he was trying to rip off. It will save me some headache taking him back to Lancaster." Allie moved to unlock the cuffs.
"Wait," Paige told her. "I didn't say you couldn't have him. I just said it falls under my authority."
Allie looked back and smiled.
Paige looked to Walter. "You think we can take your friend for a little walk and talk?"
Walter grinned at her and stood up. He reached down and grabbed Ray's tunic and yanked him up off the ground before pushing him towards the lake. Paige walked over and took Walter's hand as they walked behind Ray.
Happy stepped over and sat down next to Ralph. "You okay squirt?"
Ralph frowned and shook his head as he wrapped his arms around Happy's neck.
Happy put her arms around him and hugged him tightly to her and pulled him over onto her lap.
Allie looked back up at Cabe. "So what do I call you handsome?"
Cabe smiled. "Handsome sounds good to me."
Everyone but Happy and Ralph began laughing.
As Ray reached the lake edge he turned and looked at Walter. "Look Walt, your not going to let them do this to me are you?"
Walter smiled at Paige and then looked back to Ray. "You seem to be under the false impression I have any say over how things play out here. Joking or not, you broke a law. I can't use my relationship with my wife to influence how she governs. That would be very disrespectful of her and our love. Oh, just so you know, my Lady has full access to all of my memories. That means she knows about everything you have said and done around me. I wouldn't recommend subterfuge."
Ray stared at Walter for a moment, a look of horror on his face. "Please my Lady. I am sorry. Grant me mercy and a second chance."
"You've put me in a difficult position Ray. If I grant you leniency then I'm guilty of hypocrisy. But if I punish you I could offend my husband." Paige told him seriously. Paige turned to look up at Walter. "Do you wish to voice how you feel before I decide?"
Walter slipped his hands around her waist. "The only thing I care to voice is my love for you. Ray made his choice when he walked out of my life in Oxinear and again trying to steal from one of our friends. Whatever you feel is just I stand behind."
Paige smiled at Walter before they kissed. She looked back at Ray. "Since this is your first offense under my authority Ray I will grant you a reprieve. You will travel with the company and serve the company until we return to the Keep. Then you will serve the orphanage in town for thirty days. So let it be done."
Ray smiled. "Thank you my Lady."
As he started to walk up the hill Walter stopped him. "One thing Ray, betray my wife's trust once, step out of line even a sliver of a step and you won't have to worry about what my wife will do to you."
Ray swallowed and nodded before he hurried up the hill to the camp.
Paige smiled at Walter before she made a gesture to Allie.
Allie nodded and unlocked the cuffs on Ray.
Paige looked up at Walter. "Would you really do that?"
Walter nodded. "You and Ralph are the important part of my life now. And I wouldn't want you to feel even slightly guilty if it came down to ruling against him again."
Paige smiled. "After we speak with Lord Beyon, would you be okay with us journeying on to Hesperia? I want to introduce you to my parents."
Walter grinned. "I don't know, meeting the in-laws, sounds scary."
Paige rolled her eyes while grinning. "Perhaps Ralph will protect you?"
Walter laughed. "I'll ask him when we get back to camp."
Paige nodded. "When did you want to take him fishing?"
Walter looked up at the camp. "Probably tomorrow, he's got a lot on his mind right now. The three of us should get our swimming suits on and go swimming."
Paige smiled. "What makes you think I brought my swimming suit?"
Walter's eyes got large. "Well we can go skinny dipping then."
Paige rolled her eyes as she shook her head and began walking up towards camp.
Walter ran up and put his arm around her as they walked on up the hill. "Oh one thing my Love, with Ray around I recommend you assign someone to watch him when we're at camp. He likes to peep."
Paige looked at him shocked. "Are you serious?"
Walter nodded.
Paige looked at Allie as they entered the camp. "We're going to spend a couple of days here before heading on to Lancaster. You are more than welcomed to join us. I've already told Ray what his punishment is for what he did. But if he breaks the law again, even a moral law," Paige glared at him. "I'll turn him over to you."
Allie nodded. "I think I would like that. Cabe is quite interesting."
Cabe blushed.
Paige grinned. "Sir Sylvester, I'll leave Ray to your capable hands. Walter has advised me he likes to peep."
Everyone looked at Ray and he looked around. "What?"
"Cabe if you are agreeable I'll let you and Allie stand watches together." Paige told him.
Cabe and Allie looked at each other and they both nodded.
Walter walked over to Ralph and Happy. "How are you doing Ralph?"
Ralph looked back and tried to smile.
"Your Mother told me after we speak with Lord Beyon that we are going to go to Hesperia to visit your grandparents. You think you are up to protecting me from them?" Walter grinned at Ralph.
Ralph nodded a little and Walter reached out and lifted him up and pulled him into a tight hug.
