The icy water was already at Anton's shins as he stood up.

"Shit." He murmured, crouching down to try and break the chain around his ankle even though he knew it wouldn't work.

"Oh, gods." Valkyrie said from beside Skulduggery, watching as Anton cursed again, louder this time. He started yelling for help, but his shouts were drowned out by the never-ending explosions above him. The water was at his waist now.

"What do we do?" Ghastly asked, the fear evident in his voice. No one said anything. No one knew. It was absolutely impossible to know where they were. The ocean was a vast place to begin, not to mention they didn't know which ocean.

Anton was frantic now, taking big deep breaths before plunging below the water, trying to get the cuff off. Each time he came up again, red faced and panting. His hair stuck to his face and he angrily brushed it away, his clothes clinging to him. It was a short chain.

"He has two minute before he's submerged." Ghastly said. "How long can he hold his breath?" He asked. Dexter shook his head.

"Not long enough."

Anton was screaming for help, but his voice was being drowned out by the constant explosions happening from every direction. He was turning in every direction, looking for something, anything, to help him free himself but there was nothing there. The water was at his neck now. A bomb dropped directly above him and he lost his footing, falling onto the water. He came up as quickly as he'd gone under, coughing and spluttering the invasive water.

"We're gonna watch him die." Kaden said, a realisation thought out loud.

"What can we do? Skulduggery, what can we do?!" Valkyrie asked, her face pale and eyes wide.

"Nothing." Skulduggery replied, defeated, staring as the water submerged Anton Shudder.

A door slammed open on the ship, and a man rushed in. "Shudder?! Shudder?!" He yelled, wading his way down the stairs. It was Sam, one of the only three people Anton had met aboard the ship. Sam cursed and dove underwater. Anton couldn't hold on any longer, his chest screaming, his head light, his vision failing. Sam swam to Shudder, unlocking the cuff. Anton was unconscious. Sam grabbed him and swam back to the surface. He put Anton's arm around his shoulders and dragged him out. From there he jumped into the small row boat, the only one that remained. There were still people on the ship but they made vows, they were going down with it. Sam pounded on Anton's chest, and soon enough Anton sat up right, throwing up over the side of the boat. He looked at Sam, opened his mouth to say something but he saw something in the air. A bomb, headed straight for them.

"Look out!" Anton yelled, about to dive overboard. Sam grabbed Anton, raiding his hand. The bomb kept coming but then it hit against something in thin air, collided with the invisible barrier. It exploded a foot away from the men's heads, but they were unscathed.

"Force field." Sam said, grinning. He kept his hand raised, protected in his little bubble. The two men started rowing.

"I think I quite fancy Ireland." Sam said. Anton smiled.

"Ireland it is."

Valkyrie sat back, having watched the full thing. Anton was safe, alive, breathing.

"I like Sam." Ghastly announced. Dexter nodded his agreement. On the other screens, Ezra and Zafaria made their way to an airport, they walked miles through thick, dense jungle to get there. "I could give them a lift." Fletcher said, eyeing the mirror. Dexter tried to hide his excitement. "Sounds good." He said casually. Skulduggery, Dexter and Fletcher stood, linking up. Dexter blinked and they were just outside a hot, humid, quiet airport. Zafaria and Ezra were wearing less suspicious clothes, jeans and Ill-fitting T-shirt's and sandals. Zafaria's hair was still a mass of dark curls that hung at her waist. She smiled warmly at the three men, holding Ezra's hand. Ezra turned and saw the three men. "Nathanial!" She cried, running towards her older brother. Skulduggery wrapped her in a hug, looking questioningly at Zafaria. Her smile turned sad. "I'll explain when little one rests." She said softly. Dexter reached a hand out to Ezra, touching her shoulder lightly. She turned and stared at him, not even a flicker of recognition. Dexter felt something tear in his chest as he stared at her. Fletcher rested a hand on Dexter's shoulder, unsure of what to say. Zafaria touched Ezra's back and then the five of them were standing in the mirror room once more. Ezra gasped, pushing Skulduggery away. She looked around her, terrified.

"How did we- who did that- where are we- who are you?" The questions tumbled out in a high pitched ramble as she backed away from everyone.

"Nate what's happening?" She asked in a small, helpless voice. Dexter stared at the ground. Skulduggery offered her his hand. "It's a long story, but you need rest. Why don't I show you to a bedroom, huh? Can run you a bath, get you some clothes." He said in his smooth, velvety way. Ezra looked at his hand and eventually took it, the two of them walking out, Ezra peering round at everyone one last time. Once they'd left, Dexter crumpled into a chair.

"She doesn't know who I am." He said, empty.

"What happened to that child?" Zafaria asked, her amber eyes inquisitive. "Her mind is broken, shattered. I thought maybe I could help her, heal her, but she's in pieces. Beyond anything I could help with." Zafaria continued sadly.

"After the war, after Skulduggery died, she was taken from us. She was gone for almost 400 years. We searched everywhere, every continent, every country, and we couldn't find her. When we did find her, she had no knowledge of magic. Every four or five her captors erased her memories. Planted new ones. Sent her off again. Then we found her and lifted the barrier so she remembered magic. Us. Who she is-" Ghastly was saying.

"She then got another block. To cut out the… torture she had been through. To erase what Macon had done to her." Dexter continued. Valkyrie raised an eyebrow. This was news to her, news to everyone.

"But Macon broke the barrier. The memories came back all at once. She hasn't been the same ever since. She's so much worse now than she was." Dexter finished. Zafaria stared for a moment.

"I don't think we can bring her back." She said softly. "Too much has been done, then undone, then done again. To meddle in her mind again might cause irreparable damage. I'm sorry." Zafaria said. No one said anything. No one knew what to say. Dexter got up and walked out, his shoulders hunched.
