Pandemic: Resident Evil VI

Chapter Forty Seven: Interference

Enraged that the one who killed his men in Edonia, as well as there in China had gotten away, Chris immediately went on the offensive, driving Leon back several steps down the metal walkway as the Agent tried to avoid his punches. Although smaller than him, Leon was fast and highly skilled when it came to martial arts, managing to come back up with a kick to the Captain's stomach after ducking under another of his punches. This hit wasn't enough to knock the bigger man down, even though it landed solidly, and it gave Chris the opportunity to throw another punch, this time catching the Agent in the side of the head.

Leon tried to catch himself on the guardrail, but missed and ended up falling onto his back, and the Captain decided to end this now while there was still a chance for him to catch up to Ada. His plan was to dive on top of the Agent in order to choke him out, and then have the rest of Alpha Team take the two of them into custody while he and Piers continued the chase, but Leon thwarted this plan by lifting his feet up and using Chris's own momentum to flip him forward when he tried to dive on top of him.

The whole walkway shook a little from the impact when the Captain landed, and now both of them scrambled to their feet, but instead of trying to get all the way up, Leon spun around once he was up to his knees, slamming his foot into Chris's mouth and knocking him back down. Now the Agent tried to get all the way up, but the Captain kicked his foot out from under him, causing a hollow wham when Leon's chin hit the guardrail as he fell back down, and then they both scrambled to their feet once again, this time both backing off from each other.

"Get him, Captain!" One of the soldiers yelled. "Knock his fucking head off!"

Leon was a lot tougher than he looked, Chris had to admit as they squared off again, with the Agent changing his fighting style completely by leaning back the next time a punch was thrown, and then coming forward with his own attack that the Captain had no chance of avoiding. Forced back a step, Chris blocked Leon's next punch, and then decided to change things up a little bit by throwing out a kick of his own, hoping that his opponent wouldn't expect that. Instead, the Agent simply caught his leg by wrapping his arm around it, punching just above the knee, and shoving the Captain backwards so that he almost fell down.

Damn, Leon was a good fighter, Chris thought as he shook off the pain that was now surging through his leg, maybe even better than he was, purely in terms of skill. Unfortunately for the Agent, he didn't seem to have the raw physical power that it took to actually hurt the Captain, especially after he had faced opponents like Albert Wesker. Yeah, no matter how fast and skilled Leon was, all Chris had to do was keep wearing him down until he got tired, and then it would be all over.

As if he sensed this same outcome, the Agent suddenly went on the offensive, hitting the Captain in the stomach with a flying knee as he leapt toward him, and then throwing a powerful punch right at his face… but he missed. Leon must have already been getting tired, because it was easy for Chris to tilt his head and avoid the fist completely, and then he grabbed the Agent from behind… struggling with all his remaining strength to pick up Leon… lifting him off his feet… higher… higher… until Leon cried out in surprise when he realized that Chris had lifted him completely above his head.

This was it, the Captain thought as he slowly turned toward the edge of the walkway, the fight was over, and now all he had to do was toss Leon down to the first floor, allowing him to continue chasing after Ada. The fall wouldn't kill him… probably… wow, Chris had never actually lifted anyone up over his head before, and… it was actually pretty hard to do, and… and it was kind of disappointing that his soldiers were no longer cheering for him like that had done through the rest of the fight… maybe they were as shocked as Leon.

In a few seconds the Captain would no longer have the strength to keep this up, so he was either going to actually toss Leon down into the darkness below, or he would be forced to set him down. If he set the Agent down, was there even a chance that Leon would back down? Probably not, so he was getting ready to toss him, while trying to aim for something softer than the concrete floor… like those wooden crates down there, maybe… but then there was movement from out of the corner of his eye.

"Put the kid down, Redfield." A stern voice ordered while a revolver was pointed. "Set him down before I decide to put a bullet in your leg."

That was it, time was up either way, so Chris had no choice but to set the Agent down before his arms gave out, but instead of attacking him again, Leon also turned to face the pair of glowing yellow eyes that were visible as his rescuer walked into the light with his revolver still raised. Now, even though he had been active all over the world, this was the first time that Chris had actually seen Tobias Liquid since 1998, and… and honestly the former detective didn't look like he had aged a single day. The yellow eyed man was also a wanted bioterrorist who was not going to get away again.

"Take him down!" The Captain called to his soldiers. "That's Tobias Liquid; take him down, right now! Shoot him!"

"Captain!" Piers' voice replied… filled with fear. "Captain, we've got a problem here!"

He didn't want to take his eyes off Tobias, not even for a second, but Chris was willing to risk a quick look to see what has his Lieutenant so scared… only to have some of the color drain from his face when he turned around and saw that Gillette was standing on the other side of the walkway, right next to his soldiers. She was holding a large attaché case for some reason, waving to him with her other hand and smiling happily with a loud 'Hi, Chris!' as if they were best friends… oh God, his whole team was in danger once again… Gillette could infect them all in less than a second, and there was nothing he could do about it.

"Isn't my wife great?" Tobias asked with a slight laugh. "Honey, why don't you take Leon and his girlfriend out of here so they can finish their business? I need to have a little chat with my good buddy, Redfield, here."

Piers and the rest of Alpha Team backed off, allowing Gillette to help Helena to her feet, and then the brunette ignored the rest of Chris's team completely as she and the young woman came over to where Tobias was still holding him at gunpoint. Stopping only long enough to give the Captain a surprising hug, and then giving her husband a quick kiss on the lips that made his eyes glow a bit brighter, Gillette urged Leon and his partner toward the stairs, where they vanished from sight into the darkness a few seconds later.

As uncomfortable as that hug had been from the brunette, it allowed a few more of Chris's memories to be verified, clearing up some more of the fog that was still making him doubt a lot of what he remembered. In addition to his own wife actually being Alexia Ashford in disguise, the Captain remembered finding out about several business dealings that she had with Tobias and Gillette, along with the knowledge that she and the yellow eyed man had been friends as far back as the early 80's, before she had frozen herself as part of the Veronica experiment.

"Tell your men to wait outside." Tobias said, holstering his revolver. "I'd rather they weren't here for this."

"Is that a fact?" Chris asked, wiping the blood from his lip. "You afraid they'll gun you down the first chance they get?"

After informing the Captain that he could take several shots from an M4 before being seriously injured, the yellow eyed man explained that he wanted them out because he and Gillette were supposed to kill anyone who overheard the conversation. He then leaned closer and whispered that he had a message from Chris's wife, and also that if the Captain was a good boy and listened to everything he had to say, that Tobias would be more than happy to tell him exactly where the Ada he was searching for was going.

"Piers, you and the others wait outside." Chris ordered, visibly shocking them. "Go out the way we came in… stay as far away from Gillette as possible."

"Captain, you can't be serious." The Lieutenant replied, stepping forward. "This guy's a monster, we have to take him down."

Instead of arguing with the him, Chris simply repeated the order with a sharper tone, causing the other soldiers to urge Piers to go along with them. The Lieutenant didn't like this, but he still followed orders, while making sure to tell Tobias that this wasn't over as he and the others headed back toward the entrance, but the yellow eyed man just smiled and waved to him sort of like Gillette had done, and this made Piers grit his teeth in rage. For a moment it looked like he was going to disobey orders and come back, but the Lieutenant kept going until the door was heard closing, and now the warehouse was silent.

"I don't have anything to say to you, Tobias, and I'm short on time." The Captain said, startling himself a little as the silence was broken. "So say whatever you came here for, and then get the hell out of my sight."

"It's nice to see that your mind's getting itself together." Tobias replied, seemingly ignoring Chris's words. "There's a vehicle outside waiting for you; Ada is on her way to the Military Port a few miles south of here, where she'll get on the largest ship there, and then put her real plan into action. Maybe you can stop her before that happens, maybe you can't… but first you and I need to talk about your wife."
