47th Entry: Speculation

Later that night, Zelda had a strange dream where she was standing in the middle of a colosseum that had a large mirror at its center. But just as she was about to move, the mirror glowed brightly and shined on a monolithic stone. This caused a rotating circle to appear on the stone, followed by a set of stairs made from pure light that came down from the circle. From the circle emerged a figure wearing a black robe and a mask shaped like a chameleon head. As the figure raised his sleeved hand, the sky overhead suddenly turned from blue to orange with black squares floating in midair.

Zelda then found herself looking at the colosseum from above, causing her to realize it was located in the Gerudo Desert. From there, she saw all of Hyrule being covered in the same orange sky while a floating head appeared that sneered at her. She immediately woke up, and checked the diary. Flipping past the other entries, a new one appeared following the one that described Yuga.

"'As the Twilight continues to spread throughout Hyrule, Zant keeps me a prisoner within my own castle. Sadly, the people are not aware of this as they have become Spirits, meaning they can neither see nor hear me,'" Zelda recited. "'The only ones who can help me are a boy who's been turned into a wolf and a princess cursed into an impish form. I pray they find the Light Spirits who can banish the Twilight, and perhaps the fragments of the mirror that allowed the Twili to come to Hyrule in the first place.'"

So Zelda consulted the Hyrule Historia the next morning before going to school, and found an entire chapter on the time when Hyrule was consumed by the Twilight. After telling Link about it, she sent a group message to the Champions and Paya to meet her on the Great Plateau during lunch. Once they did, she described what the chapter in the Hyrule Historia stated.

"It seems that during the time when Hyrule's people were fighting over the 'Power of the Goddesses', which Sahasrahla told me is code for the Triforce, there was a group of magicians called the Interlopers who harnessed corruptive shadow magic and tried to take that power for themselves. However, they were banished to a separate realm known as the Twilight and there they became beings that can only exist in shadow but never the light," Zelda explained. "Now calling themselves the Twili, their existence in the Twilight was peaceful under a royal family descended from the most powerful Interlopers. That is, until a usurper called Zant took the throne away from the Twilight Realm's ruler using the power of a God not of this world. Zant then invaded Hyrule and covered it in Twilight, until a Hero who had transformed into the Divine Beast of Twili legend restored the Light Spirits."

"Divine Beast?" Yunobo looked puzzled. "You mean like the ones we have?"

"No, this one was different," Zelda corrected. "It was a real wolf who had a keen sense of smell and could see spirits."

"What kind of spirits?" Sidon asked, who insisted on coming with Mipha to the meeting.

"Poes, mostly, and those affected by the Twilight," replied Zelda. "Because apparently, non-Twili folk became spirits when the Twilight affected Hyrule and they didn't know it happened to them. This was especially problematic for the Hero, who couldn't interact with them."

"Then how was he able to restore the Light Spirits?" Riju wondered.

"By collecting the Tears of Light, and bringing them to Sacred Springs were the Light Spirits dwelled," Zelda answered. "Though the reason he turned into a wolf instead of a spirit is because he was blessed by the Goddesses, while the Princess remained human, meaning they must've had pieces of the Triforce just like Link and I did."

Behind Paya, Revali was dozing off causing Paya to nudge him awake.

"Revali, were you not listening?" Paya demanded as Revali glared at her.

"Sort of, but Zelda's delivery made the information boring," Revali claimed. "I just don't understand why we're talking about the Time of Twilight when nothing's happened."

"If a passage about it appeared in the diary, that means something related to the Time of Twilight is going to happen," Zelda insisted. "Didn't the Agahnim and Yuga situations prove that?"

"Again, sort of," Revali yawned. "While I may have seen interesting things since becoming a Champion, even beforehand, I'm only interested in what's actually happening instead of speculative things. Besides, the Mirror of Twilight that allowed Zant to invade Hyrule was destroyed by the Twilight Realm's ruler, right?"

"Yes, but if fragments of the Triforce and palaces from the past can appear in Hyrule, then who's to say the Mirror of Twilight can't be reformed?"

"But we still don't know who or what is causing that. Sure, you met this 'Lana' woman that was guiding the Seven Sages, but you don't know what her motivations are or who she really is. For all you know, she could be related to the 'corrupted half' of the Seer that Agahnim mentioned."

Frowning, Zelda left the Great Plateau and went to Castle Town's library to consult its copy of the Hyrule Historia for the name 'Lana,'. Eventually, she found her on the chapter discussing the Great Time Convergence. Resembling the woman that Zelda saw during the battle with Yuga-Ganon, Lana was described in a passage about a Seer that watched over the timelines of Hyrule but wasn't allowed to interfere. But after being corrupted by Ganondorf's power, the Seer became two people named Lana and Cia who represented the Seer's good and evil halves respectfully. While Cia disrupted the timelines to revive Ganondorf, Lana aided the Hero and the Princess to prevent it from happening. Yet despite their efforts, Ganondorf was still revived.

Before Zelda could continue the passage further, she felt someone tap her shoulder and saw Link standing behind her.

"You didn't have to follow me," Zelda said. "It's not like I'm in any danger at school, as opposed to out there in the world. Also, I thought you would trust me more after I saved you from Yuga."

Link gave Zelda a look that implied he was conflicted.

"I know you're the chosen Hero, Link, but there's no point in burdening yourself with protecting me when I can take care of myself."

Zelda then put the Hyrule Historia back on its shelf and left the library while Link followed her.
