As the early morning sun crested the horizon Maura was wide awake the thoughts of the night's events played through her mind. She knew she would have to talk to Jane about it but she also knew she would have to do it in such a way that the brunette wouldn't shut down and close up.
She sighed, stretching out her legs. She rolled over to take in the features of her beautiful girlfriend. She loved the way the sun highlighted, and softened this strong womans face. Maura had never known anyone to be as beautiful as her girlfriend.
A husky voice snapped her from her thoughts.
"You're staring Maur. Like what you see?" The brunette muttered opening one eye to look at the blonde with a smirk.
"As a matter of fact I do." Mura replies leaning in, placing a soft kiss on the brunettes lips.
"Good morning love." She says softly caressing Jane's face.
"Mmm, good morning beautiful."
"Would you like some breakfast and coffee?" Maura ask drawing lazy circles on Jane's bare chest.
"I would love that babe. Why don't you head down and get started while I get dressed."
"Okay love I'll see you in the kitchen." Maura says leaning in for another kiss. Jane watches as the other woman leaves the room. She stretches before making her way into the bathroom. After throwing on a pair of sweats and a shirt she stands and looks at herself in the mirror.
Jane could see the dark circles under her eyes, she thought about her nightmare while she brushed her teeth. She knew Maura would ask her about it but she wasn't ready to dig into them yet. She had held herself together for the most part through the heart break of losing her best friend but now she could feel her resolve started to crumble and crack, and through that crack her fears and guilt were starting to oz there way out and into her dreams.
After spitting out her mouthful of toothpaste and rinsing she pulled her hair back into a ponytail and headed downstairs. As she stood at the counter she couldn't help the smile that took over her face. She watched as Maura nodded along to the music and moved with such precision around the kitchen.
Jane takes a few more minutes before walking up and wrapping her arms around the blondes waist.
"I love watching you work around the kitchen. I think its adorable the way you sway and nod along with the music." She says kissing Maura's neck.
Maura hums, placing her hands over Jane's. "Why don't you take a seat and I'll fix you a plate love."
"You don't have to do that Maur I can do it."
"Jane this was breakfast for you, so no you will not be making your own plate now go sit." She says with a smile.
"Yes ma'am." Jane remarks putting up a mock salute.
Once they both had their plates and coffee they ate in silence for a few minutes before Maura spoke.
"Jane?" Maura says picking up her mug of coffee.
"Yes love?"
Maura bit her lip, trying to decide how to broach the subject of Jane's nightmares. Jane noticed her girlfriend lost in thought she reached out placing her hand over Maura's rubbing her thumb across her knuckles.
"Babe, what's up? I can hear the gears in that big brain of yours turning from here." Jane says with a crooked smile.
Maura sighs and decides just to say it. "Are you okay Jane?"
"Yeah Maur I'm fine. Why?"
"Well." Maura hesitates.
"Well what Maura?" Jane asks already putting her walls up.
"I'm asking because of the nightmare you had last night. I love you Jane and I just want to make sure you're okay."
"Look Maur, I know you are just looking out for me but I'm just." She pauses pushing the food around on her plate.
"Just what Jane?" Maura knew she shouldn't push but she couldn't let Jane close up.
"Jane."
"I'm just not ready to talk about Maur. Can we please just leave it alone?!" Jane says standing to bring her plate to the sink.
The tone of Jane's voice told her to drop it but being that she loved this woman more then anything she just wanted to comfort her and let her know she would be here if and when she was ready to talk.
"Jane." Maura says placing her hand on Jane's it was meant to be comforting but seemed to have the complete opposite effect.
"Damnit Maura I said drop it! Why can't you just leave it alone?! I told you I would talk when I'm ready! Why do you always have to push!" She dropped the plate in the sink causing it to break. She didn't mean to yell, it just came out.
Maura's breath caught in throat at the anger and tone of Jane's voice. She didn't say another word, she grabbed the broken plate from the sink and threw it away and headed upstairs. She heard Jane call after her but didn't turn around. She wanted to cry, her heart broke.
Jane had never spoken to her that way before. As she made it into her room she slammed and locked the door behind her. She leaned her back against the door, slowly she slid down the door, sitting down she pulled her knees to her chest, buried her face in her hands and let the tears fall.
Jane instantly regretted her words as soon as they left her mouth. When she called after Maura and she didn't turn around she knew she royally screwed up. She waited 30 minutes or so before heading up after Maura.
She tried to turn the nob but to her surprise it was locked. She rested her head against the door and knocked.
"Maur, babe please let me in. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to yell." When she got no answer she tried again.
"Babe, please." She begged tears filling her eyes. Her voice cracked as she spoke again. "Maur I'm sorry. I love you."
Maura sat on the other side of the door fresh tears running hot down her cheeks. She wanted so badly to open the door but she wanted Jane to know how much she hurt her. She finally found her words to speak.
"Just go Jane. We can discuss this later." The brunettes heart dropped to the floor. Was Maura really asking her to leave?" She thought to herself.
"Maura please! I'm sorry. Don't do this...please. I'll talk, I'll tell you whatever you want to know...just...just please don't send me away."
Maura hated the hurt she could hear in Jane's voice but she couldn't bring herself to just let Jane make up for yelling at her. A few more minutes of silence Jane spoke again.
"I'll go Maur, but I need my phone, keys and wallet off the night table."
Maura found the items she was asked for. She quickly unlocked the door and headed everything to the brunette but shut the door before Jane could say anything more.
"I love you Maur...I'm sorry...I'll let you know when I'm home." Home she thought. Home was with Maura not her apartment anymore. With those words Jane turned, walked back downstairs and out the door.
She sat in Maura's driveway for atleast an hour before leaving. The whole way back to her apartment she couldn't stop the tears from falling. She knew she shouldn't of snapped at her girlfriend.
She knew all Maura wanted to make sure she was okay. But she had let her fear turn into anger and the one person she never wanted to hurt was infact hurting and for that she felt horrible.
