"Nessie, for God's sake, it is just a bonfire! Nobody would even care if you wore a night-gown. Hurry up!" Jacob urged me, clearly frustrated.
Alice had picked out black skinny jeans and a pink off shoulder top. She also picked pep toes that would go with it. She had clearly instructed me to straighten my hair and pull it into a ponytail. She picked out the lipstick, gloss and mascara I should wear and threatened me to do as she had instructed me to or I wouldn't be leaving the house. I groaned as I hurried. "I am equally irritated, Jacob. Don't take that tone with me," I said through gritted teeth and rushed out with him.
"You look pretty," I heard Alice say from the house as we were half way through the road. Jacob parked his Rabbit by Seth's place and we walked to the bonfire. Billy, Old Quil, Sue, the entire pack and the girls were waiting for us. They would never begin a Council Meeting without their Chief.
"Guys, I am so sorry. It is my fault Jacob is late," I apologized as I sat on the log which was meant for Jacob and myself. Embry gave me a cold stare as I had delayed his dinner time and I stuck out my tongue at him. Billy began telling the stories followed by Old Quil. The story always amused me, every single time I heard it. I clung on to Jacob's arm the entire time the stories were told. After the stories were over Billy, Sue and Old Quil left us saying goodbye.
The party began with Embry and Jared rushing to the barbeque and stuffing the food inside their mouth. Everyone laughed as they saw them fight over a piece of meat.
"That is my wonderful husband," Kim announced and laughed along with us.
The new wolves sat alone as they ate their food in silence. They never said anything disrespectful about me but everybody knew that they disliked me. I couldn't blame them. Brady and Collin loved me! But, they always accompanied the new wolves. They would text me every now and then, give me a small peck on the cheek or let me cook for them. They never hung around at Emily's either.
"I'm gonna get some food, you want some?" Jacob asked me merely out of formality. I made a face and he laughed. I saw him walk towards the food and stuff plenty of it in his plate. Embry sat beside me with a bottle of bourbon in his hand. I looked around and saw Leah and Paul already drinking their third bottle for the evening.
"They are gonna have the worst hangover tomorrow," I said to Embry laughing.
"Nah," he waved a dismissive hand. "They will just wake up a little longer than usual, say, by 1 in the afternoon." I burst out laughing and Embry joined me. "You want some, Nessie?"
"Yew, Embry! Get that thing away from me," I cringed my nose and shivered.
Embry smirked. "Of course. You are not even a legal adult. You can't drink."
"I am an adult, Embry. I can pass for twenty-two," I snapped back at him.
"Oh, you can? I don't think so. If yes, I dare you to drink this bottle," he playfully glared at me. I wasn't going to rest when it came to a challenge. I snatched the bottle from his hand and gulped down the drink. And also three more without a break. Jacob hit Embry in his head and yelled at him for some time. The crowd whistled and laughed.
"Jeez, Nessie!" I heard Embry laughing. "Okay, you are an adult."
"Shut up, Embry," Jake snapped at him and turned to me. "Nessie, baby, are you okay?"
Everything turned into a blur. I heard too many voices in my head. I felt Jacob by my side. I knew he was asking me something. But, I couldn't hear him.
JPOV
"Nessie, baby, are you okay?" I hugged her to me.
"Birds, Jacob," she said pointing to the sky with one hand and cupping my face in the other.
"What? They are stars. Oh, Jesus. You are drunk."
She giggled pinching my nose. "How come you are so cute, Jakey?"
Everybody burst out laughing and my face turned red. "Damn, you are really drunk," I remarked. "Nessie, please shut up. I'm taking you home now."
"Drunk?" she asked covering her mouth with her hands. "Daddy will not like it," she whispered in my ears.
"Well, I will speak to Daddy," I said rolling my eyes.
"Don't take me home, Jakey. Ina wouldn't want me to go, would you, Ina?"
Ina rolled her eyes and mouthed, Just take her home.
I carried her by her waist and sat her on the car. I drove to the cottage and opened the door. I scooped her in my arms and kicked the door close. "Now, shush okay?" She nodded with her eyes closed.
"Jake, is that you?" Bella asked as she opened the door. Like you wouldn't know.
She looked at us and her jaw dropped. "What the-" I cut her off.
She is drunk. Don't talk!, I mouthed at Bella, to avoid Edward from hearing us. She motioned me to come inside and locked the door to Nessie's bedroom. "I got you on shield. Don't worry. Wait outside, I will get her changed."
I hugged Bella as soon as I left Nessie on the bed. "Thank you, Bells. You are a life-saver." I waited outside, pacing impatiently across the room. Finally, Bella opened the door and motioned me to come in. She closed the door silently.
"She wouldn't change into her pajamas, Jake. She is acting like crazy. She says she will go to sleep only if she sees you. Oh, she would have caused you such an embarrassment. Sorry, Jake," Bella looked at me worriedly.
"Hey. No. That's fine. She is never an embarrassment to me. Anyways, thank you, Bells. I will take it from here," I said and kissed her cheek. She nodded and left the room. I sat beside Nessie who was laying on the bed on her stomach. She was wearing her camisole and cotton shorts and mumbled something in her sleep.
"Jacob?"
"I'm right here, Nessie. Go to sleep," I said taking her in my arms.
"Okay. Promise me you won't leave me alone," she mumbled.
"I promise, Nessie. I'll be here when you wake up," I assured her.
"No, I don't believe you," she whispered and looked at me, straining those eyes to stare at me.
Oh, God! This girl is going to be the death of me, I thought to myself. "Look, honey, it's half past one already. You should go to sleep. I'll stay here. I promise," I said patiently. "Good night, Ness," I said kissing her hair, but she did not respond.
RPOV
I woke up to the sun shining brightly in my face. It was bothering me by pricking my skin. My head hurt badly when I sat up. "Ow! Ow! Ow!" I winced in pain and pressed my temples. I noticed that I was not in my pajamas. "What the hell?" I tried to remember something from last night but I couldn't. Jacob was fast asleep with his mouth wide open. He did not even remove his jacket and even had his shoes on. "Ja-" I said, but my voice was hoarse. I cleared my throat and said, "Jacob. Wake up."
He groaned. "Let me sleep, Nessie. You didn't allow me to sleep for a long time."
"Jacob Black!" I yelled. "Wake up right now."
He jumped up. "What the hell, Nessie?" he yelled back at me.
"What do you mean I did not allow you to sleep last night?" I asked, horror filling every nook and corner of my body. My eyes had already begun to well up.
"Hey, why are you acting weird? Don't cry," he said softly and took me in his arms. "What is wrong?"
"What happened last night, Jacob? I cannot remember anything," I said.
"Well, last night you got pretty drunk at the party and began rambling like a crazy woman. And then, I took you home. Bella changed your clothes and I put you to bed."
I was sobbing. "Mom saw me when I was drunk? Oh, no!"
"Hey, it's okay. I don't think Edward knows."
"But, what if Dad knows? He will be very disappointed with my behaviour," I worried.
"Look, it's okay. Stop crying. You will be already be having a headache."
"Yes, it hurts," I accepted and he nodded.
"Okay, you go take a shower and get changed. I'll see if I can do anything about the hangover," he said and I nodded and made my way to the bathroom. When I came back, Jacob was sitting on my bed with a glass on raw egg yolk. My eyes grew wide when I saw them.
"I am supposed to drink this?" I asked, not taking my eyes off the glass.
"Do you have a better idea?" he chided me. "Listen, you don't have any other option. You got drunk, now you suffer the consequences," he shrugged and handed me the glass.
"No, I won't drink this. I'd rather suffer from head ache all day than drink this. Yew! The smell of it alone makes me nauseous," I cringed my nose.
"Renesmee, you have to drink this," Jacob said firmly and I sighed in frustration.
"Oh, damn you, Embry," I said to myself and gulped down the drink, closing my eyes tight. Jacob laughed and shook his head and I made a face. I pulled my hair into a pony tail and got changed. "Jacob, I am scared at the very thought of going to the main house. What if Dad knows?"
"You have to face him some time. Better do that when I am with you," Jacob said and I nodded because it kinda made sense. Jacob would at least come to my aid.
"Renesmee, you got drunk last night?" Dad asked me furiously when I stepped inside the house.
Oh, Jeez, I am damned, I thought to myself. "I, um, yes, Dad. It was a mistake. I am sorry. There won't be a next time."
He stared at me. "I know there won't be a next time. But, you are grounded for the rest of the summer."
My eyes grew wide. "What?" Jacob and I asked in unison.
"I am very disappointed with both of you," he said to Jacob and me.
I looked at my Mom. "Don't you dare look at me for help! You showed poor behaviour."
Oh, it is not such big a deal, I thought to myself. "Okay," I said trying to avoid any further conversation.
"Edward, she said she wouldn't repeat it again. You are being cruel," Rosalie said as she stopped playing the piano.
Dad settled on the couch and smiled at Rosalie. "Do you take requests, Rose?"
"Yeah sure."
"Oh, well. Shut your mouth," he snapped at her and Rosalie stared at him furiously. He looked at me. "Let me tell you how you will be spending the rest of your summer. You are not allowed to visit LaPush and meet the pack or the girls." I opened my mouth to speak up, but decided against it when he shot me a look. "You can see Jacob only in the weekends and you are not supposed to call him before seven in the evening. No shopping with Alice and no watching TV. You will leave the house only for hunting."
"Dad, you cannot do this to me!" I argued. "I can't not go to LaPush. I have to visit Billy, Jayden, Sammy and Andrew. Hell, I'm Andrew's aunt! And you cannot restrict me from hanging out with Ina. Dad, she is my only human best friend. Please, Dad. I, certainly, cannot go without seeing Jake for so long. Why are you doing this to me? I know I've made a mistake and I apologized too. I feel bad enough already. You don't have to punish me and make me feel guilty about it. Besides, I am a college student. People my age do more than get drunk!"
"I made my point," dad replied closing his eyes. He had a stern look on his face and I knew he was going to explode any minute now if I pushed it any further.
"Dad, what am I supposed to do in the house then?"
"Books, Renesmee. Read your books. Be happy that I didn't cut your phone privileges," he said through gritted teeth.
I was sitting on the couch in my bedroom reading Illiad. My phone beeped telling me it was seven. I immediately called Jacob and he picked it up on the first tring.
"Hey!" I said enthusiastically.
Nessie, this whole you're-grounded-for the-rest of-the-summer thing sucks. I am sorry.
"I know. But I deserved to be punished. I was being a brat," I laughed.
Whatever. But, Vamp Daddy is acting cruel.
I giggled. "So, did you have dinner, Jake?"
No. Sam invited me for dinner, though. But, I thought I'll stay with Billy tonight for dinner.
"Oh, it's just Monday today. I can't believe I gotta wait four more days to meet you."
Yeah. I am missing you already.
"Me too," I sighed.
Do you think, by any chance, Edward would lift off the punishment if I talk to him?
"Jake, I swear, you won't be allowed to meet me in the weekends too," I laughed and he joined me.
How was your day?
"Well, I woke up, I read," I paused. "That's it."
Oh, I am so sorry your summer sucks.
"Well, not so much. I mean I enjoy reading. I love book and the smell of them and hmmmm," I said and Jake cut me off.
Okay, okay. I understand your love for books. Can we talk about something else?
I laughed. "Okay, tell me, how was your day?"
Nothing much. Just working on engines all day.
"Well, that is something you enjoy doing, right?"
Yeah. I could hear the smile in his voice.
"How is Billy?"
Great. He was very happy when I stayed with him for dinner.
"Oh, good to hear."
So, what do you wanna do this weekend?
"I don't know. We could go hunting. I have been avoiding hunting with my family just to show them I am angry with them. I have been eating human food all week."
Jacob laughed. Oh, you poor creature. Sure, I will take you hunting.
"Cool. I am sure we will have fun."
Do you wanna make a bet?
"Jacob, are you sure you wanna buy me another pair of shoes?" I teased him and he made an annoying sound.
Just because you won one time, doesn't mean you will win always, Ness.
"Oh, Jacob. When are you going to learn this? I always win, sweetie."
That is because you always cheat. You are nothing but a big fat cheater.
I laughed. "Alright, if that's what you want, then I don't mind making a deal."
Cool. Name it.
"If I win, you will allow me to ride your bike on the first day to college."
Whooo! Okay. If I win, you will eat cafeteria food for three weeks continuously.
"That's not fair!"
Not a problem when you are gonna win, right? He asked sarcastiacally.
"Fine!"
Deal?
"Deal."
Okay, bye bye, my stomach is growling.
I laughed. "Okay, bye, Jacob. I love you."
Love you more. Good night.
"Night, Jake."
