Punk was surprised he was able to sleep but clearly he did. The sun shinning into his bedroom woke him up and he sat up and ran his hand over his face and looked to left and there was no AJ or Hartley. He threw the blankets off himself and went in search of his family. He headed into the kitchen and saw AJ holding Hartley in one arm and placing a dish on the counter.
"You're just in time." She grinned. "I made you brunch."
"Brunch?" He asked scratching the back of his head.
"It's almost noon and it's breakfast food so brunch." She pointed out. "And I did it while holding Hartley in one arm I'm so getting used to this."
"Where's my mom?" Punk asked confused.
"She went to run errands." AJ shrugged. "I promise it's good."
"Thank you." He said giving her a kiss then kissing Hartley's head. "You could have woken me up."
"You got in so late." AJ reasoned.
"Oh, yea." He said sitting at the counter.
"Want to talk about it?" She asked.
"Not really." He said honestly as AJ poured him a cup of coffee.
"How was your brother?" AJ questioned. "Unless you were at a different bar."
"I didn't stop to chit chat and catch up." He said taking a bite out of the food. "It was work related."
"Is your brother working with Dickie?" AJ asked him.
"No. He's a dumbass but no." Punk said to her. "But Dickie has been a patron at the bar. Maybe he thought me and my brother were close."
"He's been there? How did you figure it out? The Doctor spoke?" AJ asked and Punk put his fork down.
"Ape, he's been living across the street from your office and when I say across the street his apartment can see into your office." Punk explained.
"Creepy." AJ mumbled.
"It gets creepier." Punk said to her. "He's been out back in our yard probably getting through the woods. He was here a few days ago I saw pictures."
"Of course he has." AJ sighed. "I guess we have to move."
"We don't have to move." AJ said as if it was nothing.
"We're not moving, Ape." He told her. "We have a positive ID on him now. We're going to get him."
"So I sit here with your daughter and wait for him to kill me like he did to my parents? I think not." She scoffed.
"I know this is scary." Punk sighed.
"Do you?" She asked. "Why are you so calm?"
"Because I'm here." He reminded her. "No one is getting within ten feet of you while I'm here."
"And what happens when you go back to work? When I go back to work?" She asked.
"He'll be caught way before that." Punk assured her and she eyed him. "I promise you." He told her surely.
"We have a daughter, Phil." AJ reminded him.
"I'm aware. She's very pretty." Punk said with a light smile but AJ just frowned.
"We've got this." Punk told her. "His friends are turning on him. We've got this."
"He still has one very important friend." AJ pointed out and he eyed her. "Eliza Daniels."
"Dean and the feds are leaving no stone unturned." He assured her.
"I'm going to call Elliot." AJ said to him and he glared at her.
"Why?" He asked.
"No one is closer to Eliza than Elliot." AJ said to him. "Maybe he can get into her place."
"And turn his mother in? I don't think so." He laughed.
"I think you're underestimating him." AJ said to him. "I have to do something to help-"
"Talk to him." Punk encouraged. "I went to my brother for help I'll take help from anyone."
"Good." AJ said to him. "Do you have to go into work?"
"No. I'm on paternity leave." He reminded her. "Last night was a fluke. I'm sure Dean will drop by and fill me in."
"Good." She said passing him Hartley. "I have to shower, she spit up in my hair." She told Punk.
"You are gross." He told his daughter seriously.
A few hours later Dean was there with Renee and Dean was soaking up time with Hartley.
"Can you say Uncle Dean?" Dean asked Hartley as he held her.
"She can't even hold her head up yet but sure she'll talk." Renee mocked. "When do I get to hold her?"
"Never. She's mine and you'll starting getting baby vibes." Dean said to her.
"I've had baby vibes since I laid eyes on her at the hospital." Renee said to him.
"Share." AJ said entering the living room.
"You heard her." Renee said extending his arms for the baby and Dean reluctantly passed her over.
"So Punk told me you reached out to Elliot?" Dean asked.
"I did." AJ said to him. "He's in Chicago so is his father on business. I think they'll be stopping by." AJ told them as she straightened up.
"Punk didn't mention that." Dean remarked.
"I didn't tell him. It'll be a surprise." AJ grinned.
"Oh, wonderful." Dean laughed.
"We can stay for that right? I want to see that." Renee asked cooing at the baby.
"Yea." Dean said accepting a beer from AJ. "She looks just like you."
"I wish people would stop saying that." Punk said now entering the living room fresh from a shower.
"Where's Pam? I thought she was staying with you guys for a bit?" Renee asked playing with the baby.
"She's sleeping. She can't keep up with Hartley." Punk mocked.
"This will be the most peaceful she'll ever be." Dean warned and AJ glared at him. "I mean, if he takes after AJ I mean."
"Why do you make it out like I'm some wild child?" She asked annoyed.
"Dean told me the story of you two meeting." Renee grinned. "You'll be lucky if Hartley has those good genes like her."
"She wanted to keep me as if I was a dog." Dean reminded them.
"I did promise to walk you every morning before school." AJ remembered fondly.
"When AJ was 12 she went on her first date." Dean warned Punk and he looked at his wife.
"A little young to be going out with Elliot, no?" Punk asked.
"It wasn't Elliot. It was a ploy to make Elliot jealous." AJ laughed. "And I didn't even get to enjoy the date." She said glaring at Dean.
"She invited a 20 year old boy over." Dean explained to Punk who's mouth dropped.
"He was my tutor in math." AJ scoffed.
"And she put makeup on she looked like a clown." Dean explained again to Punk.
"Dean called him a pervert and chased him with a bat." AJ added.
"You won't do things like this to daddy will you, baby?" He asked Hartley who was in Renee's arms still. "You'll be my perfect angel forever and ever."
"All girls school." Dean said to Punk who nodded.
"Stop that." AJ scolded.
"She's going to inherit AJ's sneaking around skills." Dean warned Punk now who looked terrified. "Luckily the two of us have been around AJ long enough we can trick Hartley."
"That is true." Punk agreed.
The doorbell rang and Punk looked up concerned.
"It's ok." AJ said waving it off and rushing to the door.
"Man, you better hope Hart doesn't take after AJ." Dean warned quietly and Punk walked behind AJ to the door and he was stunned as she welcomed her ex fiance, Mayor of Hillsboroug and his former partner Finn Balor into his home.
"Ape?" Punk asked.
"We're going to talk about Dickie." AJ reasoned.
"Good to see you Detective." Bret greeted. "What a modest little home you have."
"Some might consider it large." Punk shot back at him.
"Some." Elliot mocked lightly.
"I think it's great." Finn said to him walking past him.
"Ape why are these people in our home?" Punk asked AJ quietly.
"It's all about coming together to defeat a common enemy." AJ insisted.
"I hate all three of those people." Punk said to her seriously and the doorbell rang again and he glared at her.
"I swear I didn't invite anyone else." She said quickly and Punk opened the door to reveal Peyton.
"I'm sorry to not call first but I saw the cutest outfits today in the shop for the baby." Peyton said holding a bag up.
"Come on in it's a party." Punk stepping aside to let her in.
Punk and Dean spoke to Finn in full detail along with Bret. Elliot had spoken to his mother who still swears she hasn't seen or heard from Dickie but Finn discovered funds of hers going into a western union wired out to Illinois. The next step would be locating those shops where the money was picked up from.
"She loves all the attention." AJ said holding Hartley walking over to Punk who was glaring at all the company in the living room.
"I don't. I don't like these people I don't want them fawning over my daughter." Punk told her.
"Oh, you don't like Dean, Renee or Peyton?" She questioned.
"Ok I don't like half the company here." Punk remarked. "Now my mom is making snacks and they really think it's a fucking party."
"Why are you so crabby?" She laughed as Punk took Hartley from her arms.
"I don't like people I don't like playing with my daughter." Punk snapped and she rolled her eyes.
"You have to share her." AJ said to him.
"I don't have to share MY daughter with anyone." Punk defended.
"I feel better with a full house." AJ admitted and Punk eyed her sadly. "I just feel like Dickie can't come in here and kill me now."
"He'll never be able to do that." Punk insisted. "We don't need to invite every single human we know over."
"I didn't invite all of them." AJ remarked. "Peyton just showed up but did you see how cute those dresses were?"
"I don't want you to live in fear." Punk insisted.
"I'm always going to live in fear." AJ said to him. "It will never go away until Dickie goes away."
"Ape-" He began.
"She needs to be changed." AJ said to him.
"This conversation isn't over." Punk said to her and he walked away with the baby to change her.
As he walked away Elliot walked over.
"Your daughter is beautiful." Elliot told her.
"She is." AJ agreed proudly.
"I'm really sorry about what my mother has done to you." Elliot told her. "I'm sorry that her connections and ways hurt you so badly."
"I appreciate that but it's not your fault." AJ said to him. "I see you and Bret made up." she noted casually.
"We're working on it. I can at least look him in the eye. I can't look my mother in the eye." Elliot said to her. "So, uh- what's Peyton's story?"
"Her ex boyfriend tried to shoot me." AJ told him casually. "She has a 16 year old so."
"She's so young." Elliot marveled.
"She's had a rough go of it. But she was one of the nicest women I've met here." AJ said to him. "Don't date her if you can't be good to her."
"I wasn't going to date her." Elliot laughed and she eyed him. "I was thinking of asking but she works for you."
"I have no problem who you date." AJ laughed back. "But if you upset her I'll kill you." She promised.
"She doesn't even know who I am." Elliot remarked. "Do you know what it's like in Hillsborough and in my inner circle here in Chicago? I'm the son of the crazy bitch."
"Peyton isn't judgemental like that." AJ shrugged. "She also used to date Phil."
"Wow." Elliot had to chuckle. "Of course he has."
"Don't badmouth my husband." AJ warned.
"I wouldn't. If you couldn't end up with me Phil is decent enough." He shrugged.
"Maybe you need a fresh start." AJ suggested. "Away from Hillsborough. It helped me."
"What would I do?" He asked amused.
"You have a degree." AJ reminded him. "You don't have to live in your parents shadow forever."
AJ walked into Hartley's nursery and she leaned in the doorway with a smile seeing him sitting in the rocker recliner with Hart on his knee as he read her a book.
"I was wondering where you went." AJ noted.
"Oh, I decided to get her in her pajamas and she wanted a story." Punk said keeping his eyes on the book.
"You're not just hiding her away from our guests because you're jealous?" AJ teased.
"First of all I'm not jealous." Punk said looking up. "Second of all she is MINE I don't have to share her with a bunch of people I wouldn't even share a drink with."
"You're so protective of her and she's not even a month old." AJ said stepping into the room.
"Again, she's mine." He reminded her. "I don't have to share her." He said kissing the top of Hartley's head.
"They left." AJ smiled.
"Elliot?" He asked hopefully.
"All of them." AJ smirked. "Except for Dean and Renee."
"Peyton could have stayed." Punk said to her and AJ smiled.
"Elliot took her out for a drink." AJ told him and Punk glared at her.
"He's no good for her." Punk warned her.
"She's smart." AJ said to him. "I've always told you Elliot wasn't a horrible person. He's meant well but he's lived so long under his mother's thumb."
"Everyone kept saying Hart looks just like you." He said looking down at his daughter.
"Yea but she has your eyes." AJ said to him and he eyed her. "It's true. Last night when I was waiting up for you she gave me a look that I've only ever seen from you and I noticed it. She has your eyes exactly. She has your soul, you're amazing beautiful and kind soul."
"I'm partial to your soul." Punk said to her with a half a smile.
"I didn't have much of a soul until I met you." She told him simply.
"That's not true at all." Punk had to laugh.
"It is." She said to him. "I was so cold and bitter. I kept you at arms length and I didn't want to love you I liked being lonely and empty and then you blew into town and filled me with such emotion. You're extraordinary and that's going to make Hartley extraordinary."
"I'm still not sharing her with other people." He told her seriously and she smiled. "She just wants to hang with daddy anyway, right?" He asked his daughter.
"So, I was thinking when I'm ready to go back to work she can come with me." AJ told him and he frowned. "I have space to set her up and just for when I go into the office."
"No stakeouts for her?" He asked teasingly.
"Not at this age." AJ remarked offended. "She has to be at least 6 before that happens."
"Whatever you're comfortable doing." He told her. "You know what's best for her."
"She's half yours, you get a say." AJ said to him. "I'd just rather her be with me at work than at your job."
"Yea I don't want her at my job." Punk remarked fearfully. "I used to love my job. And now I don't want to go back. I work cases involving kids and now I have one-"
"They need you." AJ told him cutting him off. "Those kids? Yea, they need you. They need you to be their voice. Your daughter won't be one of those cases and that should give you peace enough."
"YOU are extraordinary." Punk said to her. "I'm going to get Dickie."
"I know." She replied running her hand through his hair soothingly.
"Until I do I need you to be careful." He warned her.
"I always am." She teased.
"Seriously." He repeated. "Please be careful. If you see him you call me. We have his face now. He's going to get itchy."
"Is that why Dean is asking me about the drape color in our guestroom?" AJ asked him amused.
"When I'm working he'll be here." He told her. "I mean we still have time before I'm back but just in case."
"I think it's getting down to the wire. He's going to get desperate and the walls are closing in." AJ told him.
"Yea me too." Punk hated to agree.
The doorbell rang and Punk glared at AJ.
"I swear I'm not expecting another soul." AJ assured him. "Except for your brother." She added and he was ready to to stand up. "Kidding! But I do want to meet him."
"He's not family." Punk reminded her.
"He's being nice though, right?" She asked curiously. "And you two are talking without fighting?"
"Because I need something from him." Punk pointed out.
"I just want to meet one person from your childhood." She frowned. "You get all these embarrassing stories about me from Dean and I get nothing."
"Hey sorry to interrupt." Dean said poking his head in the nursery. "But I need to borrow Punk."
"I got her." AJ said taking Hartley from him. "Mommy will finish the story tonight."
"She's going to be already?" Dean frowned.
"She'll be up a hundred times." AJ assured him.
Punk followed Dean down the stairs and saw Agent Creed standing by the door.
"What's this?" Punk asked. "You find him."
"We think we found another victim." Creed told him. "Three miles from here. A young single mother was found beaten and raped. Her mother found her when she came to check in on the baby."
"The baby was there? Is it ok?" Punk asked.
"Yea. Baby is young and probably saw the whole thing but he won't remember." Creed told him.
"Why do you think it was him?" Punk asked. "He doesn't usually go into homes for victims."
"Because the victim had nothing but this." Creed said pulling a clear bag at his pocket.
"That isn't what I think it is." Punk said to him eyeing the familiar piece.
"Your wife's locket." Creed confirmed. "Picture is a sonogram photo of your baby."
"How did he get in the house for it?" Dean asked Punk.
"He didn't." Punk told them. "The locket broke and Ape was devastated. I took it to the jewelry store to have the chain replaced."
"He must have followed you there." Creed noted. "When did you go?"
"Three days ago?" Punk asked thinking about it. "I have a newborn all these days feel like one."
"We'll pick up security footage from the store." Creed assured him.
"It's just like how we found Daria's necklace." Punk reminded Dean.
"He's clearly sending a message." Creed said to him.
"Yea I'm getting his message loud and clear." Punk remarked filled with anger. "Shes going to want that back."
"She'll get it back when this is all over." Creed promised.
"What's happening to that woman's baby?" Punk asked.
"Going to the grandparents." Creed told him. "The baby is in good hands."
"Another family ruined by Dickie McCall." Punk said shaking his head in disbelief.
"He's getting sloppy and that's when we catch them." Creed reminded him. "You just need to prepare yourself."
"I've been prepared." Punk assured him.
