"Are we there yet?", Ock asked Kraven who flew the plane.
"Not yet. Almost, though."
"I hate waiting...", Ock muttered and walked to the back of the plane. Taskmaster repaired his weapons while Ambrose sat on the couch. He sure looked miserable.
"Everything alright here?"
As usual, Taskmaster just grunted. Grunting back, Ock turned his attention to his older ally.
"And how are you, Mr. Osborn? Still hurt?"
"Yes...my precious sight is gone for good", Ambrose rubbed the bandage he had around his head to cover his bleeding eyes.
"My deepest apology. Let's see if I can do something when we get to our destination."
"Wonderful...now I must rest."
"Be my guest. I inform you when we're there", Ock continued walking to the back of the room and stopped in front of the large curtain. Pulling it aside, he grinned at Norman who sat in a cage.
"Normie! I hope you don't mind quite rough manners I ordered my...friends to use. You shouldn't struggle like that."
Looking up, Norman glared at his enemy. The poor man was tied up and gagged since he kept fighting as much as he could when he was taken. And obviously, baddies didn't like it.
"Now now, don't look at me like that. I gave you a choice but you wasted it. Since I can't have your kid, I have to be satisfied with you. And besides, you get to spend more time with your father. Isn't that wonderful?", Ock smiled evilly. Norman turned his head away in a protest.
"Fine, don't talk! Oh right, you can't. Well, enjoy the rest of the ride! You'll be surprised where we are heading. Very, very surprised..."
After Norman was left alone, sorrow swallowed him. This was the second time when he was separated from his family and friends. The second time Harry is left behind.
Son...no, not again...I lost him! No...
Norman wanted to believe that Harry and others had survived. They must have. He refused to accept other options.
I must get back there...but how?!
Trying his ropes, Norman noticed that they were too tight. He couldn't free himself that way. So, he needed a new plan.
My armor is gone...I need a vehicle to get back there. Maybe...
An idea started running in Norman's head. It was a risky one but he had to try. For everyone. For his family.
As soon as I get the opportunity. Then I...
"Wake up, sleeping beauty", Kraven came to interrupt Norman's thoughts. "We're almost there so get up."
Obeying, Norman stood up. Kraven let him out of the cage and removed the gag.
"Now, you better do exactly as I say. Otherwise...", he showed his knife. "Come."
It's better to do as he says..., Norman thought while walking out of the closet. Soon he saw his father lying on the couch.
"I know those steps...son! What a pleasant surprise. I assume you were worried about me?"
"I know what you tried to do", Norman said angrily. "And I swear..."
"Thanks, I got it. That kid is useless. He's strong but in the wrong way. Or was..."
"You..!", Norman tried to attack Ambrose but Kraven pushed him violently against the wall.
"Get your hands off me!"
"Don't you remember what I told? If you keep fooling around, then...", Kraven showed his knife once more. It shimmered ominously.
"Just put it away", Norman was frightened now. "I do as you say."
"Hah hah hah! You're just like your mother when you're scared. How cute", Ambrose mocked, obviously enjoying the scene.
"I told you not to talk about her! You have dishonored her memory enough."
"But she was my wife. It's not just your privilege to talk about her. Without us, you wouldn't even exist."
"Maybe that would have been better...", Norman muttered.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"What's all the fuss here?", Ock came into the room. "Oh, you let him out. Perhaps you're ready to cooperate more now, Norman?"
Norman didn't still answer. It didn't surprise Octavius, he knew his former boss well. So he just forced him to look out of the window.
"So, do you like it? Please, be honest."
"Oh my god...", Norman gasped. They were back in the city, right above Oscorp. But it didn't look normal anymore since it was covered in green slimy jelly.
"What have you done to my company?!"
"Former company", Ock corrected. "Since you don't need it anymore, I decided to use the building and make it a temporary base until the city is completely cleared of the map."
"When will you get enough of my humiliation?! I have nothing left where you could take something from! I can't take this anymore!", Norman closed his eyes.
"But Normie, Normie. I had to suffer under your control for years. This is nothing compared to that. I'm being way kinder than you even know."
"You left my son to die...you can end me right here! I have no reason to help you."
"Always this same topic...be honest, Norman! You don't care about your brat. When I attacked Oscorp, you said no word about him. Not a SINGLE word. You had no idea he was in trouble until Parker tattled about it. What kind of parent has no interest in his own kid?"
"You know nothing! NOTHING! None of you! But do NOT talk about my son. You have no right", Norman threatened.
"Whatever, I don't care. All I'm interested in is my victory. Taskmaster, land the plane safely. It contains fragile content", Ock ordered.
"This plan is better to be successful, or else someone's gonna pay and hard", Taskmaster said quietly to himself. Everything would have worked pretty well...if only Ock would have kept his mouth shut.
"See, Norman? This is it. My glorious moment and your downfall. You're right, I did destroy your life. Putting down the company that made me suffer and turning you into one of the most hideous monsters on this planet. Although I'm sad about one thing. Poor Harry had to suffer such a painful death. There he probably is now, ripped apart by his best friend and his father failed to protect him."
"..."
"Oh well, good riddance! Those little shits got what they deserved. It's not our concern...AAAH!", Ock was cut off as Norman pushed him hard and attacked Taskmaster, making him lose the control of the plane. It crashed directly against Oscorp tower and from there fell to the ground.
*Several minutes of silence*
"Oh my head...", Ock crawled out of the plane. "Why did you let that idiot attack?!", he hissed at Taskmaster.
"Don't look at me! You provoked him!"
"Great...look at this mess! And where is Norman?! I don't see him."
"Shouldn't you keep an eye on your prisoners?"
"Shut up! You and Kraven search the area, he couldn't have gone far."
"I'm afraid I'm not much of a help. My condition...", Ambrose made his condition look worse than it was. Well, it was bad.
"Not a chance! I have others to do the dirty work. While we wait, let's drink some whiskey. That helps me to relax", Ock said.
"Wonderful. Even though my sight is gone, the taste is the same. My pathetic son has never appreciated good drinks."
"Yap yap yap", Taskmaster mocked when he started looking. He didn't understand why he was still along with this plan. But if he left now, Ock would call him weak. And that satisfaction he wasn't going to let those two idiots have.
"We better find that idiot and fast before Octavius gets another reason to mock. How is it that an unarmored man can take us down and then disappear into thin air?!"
"Maybe he was just lucky. I shouldn't have loosened his ties so much", Kraven muttered.
"You must be joking."
Shrugging, Kraven started chewing a new gum. Taskmaster wanted to get far from him as well, so he decided to check the ruins.
"Fine, I check the stuff and the plane", Kraven hollered and headed inside the plane. It was pretty dark.
"Hmm, this is not completely damaged. I better..."
*Klick*
"Huh?", Kraven heard the gun loading behind him and after that, he already felt the cold metal against his occiput.
"Not a word", Norman warned.
"You?! How did...?!"
"Be quiet! I'm tired of your rubbish, so you better do exactly as I say unless you don't want your brains to be part of the walls."
"Fine! Take it easy", Kraven raised his hands.
"Good. Now, is this plane still flyable?", Norman asked.
"I guess. Why?"
"Because you are taking me back to that hideous iland at once. And don't try anything."
"Are you kidding me?! Octavius will eat us both alive if we do that."
"I don't care. You have ten seconds before I shoot. And believe me, I'm capable of doing very dark things if someone crossed the line enough times", Norman pushed the gun deeper into Kraven's skin. He was so angry that he wasn't afraid of anything anymore.
"Will you release me if I obey?"
"It depends on how well you manage. And I'm not saying this twice. MOVE IT."
"Why always me...?!", Kraven muttered and started flying. Other villains turned around when heard weird voices.
"What is happening?! What is Kraven doing with my plane?!", Ock stared. "TASKMASTER!"
"What?!"
"What did you say to him?! I didn't order -"
"Nothing!"
"Then why...?!", Ock stopped his sentence. Norman smiled triumphantly at him from the window.
"Hey! HEY, there he is! STOP THEM!"
"How?! I can't fly!", Taskmaster yelled.
"But all of my items are there! STOP! KRAVEN, GET BACK HERE!", Ock yelled angrily.
"Let him ramble", Norman said to Kraven. "Now, fly."
"Sweet Jesus", Kraven turned to plane towards the iland and disappeared into the night, leaving other baddies behind. Ock yelled angrily until the plane was only a tiny spot in the sky.
"Wow, that Osborn isn't as easy as he looks", Taskmaster muttered, clearly enjoying this turn of events.
"Wipe that smirk from your face. Thanks to you, my results are gone!"
"Gone? Please, sure you have copies?"
Not answering, Ock walked to Ambrose. At least one person in his team understood him.
"What happened?"
"Your dear son and Kraven disappeared with my tech. And unfortunately, I don't have copies done yet..."
"Oh dear, I'm sorry. Now Norman went too far but of course, it's my fault. I have failed, badly", Ambrose said sadly.
"Do not blame yourself. But you're right, he went too far. He, his brat, and Parker have made fun of me far enough. Now I'm going to put an end to it. If they want war, that's what they're going to get. Come on, both of you! I have one me trick left", Ock waved with his hand.
"Hah, your tricks have never worked. Why would this one?", Taskmaster sounded suspicious.
"You'll see...since even you will be surprised. Sometimes old themes are better than new ones", Ock grinned.
Bad mistake Norman, bad mistake. Let's see how you survive this present that I'm going to give you.
*In the sky*
"How far is it?", Norman asked.
"I'm not sure. Look, even if we get there, there is no guarantee that your kid -", Kraven started, but...
"Just focus on flying. My family is none of your business."
"Arrogant rich fuck", Kraven whispered angrily. Ignoring him, Norman looked out again. He couldn't wait to see his friends.
I'm coming, son.
-o-o-o-
"Boys stop!", Aunt May yelled in horror. "Harry, get back here before you hurt yourself!"
"I can't! Someones have to protect us since Flash is hurt!", Harry dodged Peter's attack and tried to tackle him down. He missed.
"Pete, wake up! Please, I know you're in there!"
Peter's face looked empty, his expression and eyes looked empty. He was like a shell without a soul. He didn't seem to understand or hear his friend.
"Peter, don't just stand there quietly! Say something!", Harry begged.
Lifting the knife, Peter attacked again. Harry knew that he had to keep the attention at himself to protect May and Flash. But how long would it last?
I have to get out of this pool and find out how Ock is controlling him. But how walls are too high!
"Hey, Peter!", Harry threw a slimeball at him. "Catch me if you can!"
While Peter chased Harry, May tried to wake Flash.
"Flash, wake up! Harry needs your help!"
No reaction.
"Flash...?", May shook him and suddenly noticed something in his neck. A microchip.
"What's this...?", she tapped it carefully.
"Harry!"
"Yes...?!"
"I think...I think I found something! Flash has some sort of microchip in the back of his neck!"
"A microchip?! Then maybe...", Harry dodged Peter once more. "Can you take it off?!"
"I try!", May yelled and tried to yank the piece of metal off. It took a moment but eventually, it worked and at the same second, Flash jumped awake.
"Wow! What...?!"
"Thank god! Are you alright, dear?"
"Aunt May! What happened...?", Flash asked.
"No time to explain! You have to stop Peter before he hurts himself or us!"
"Peter...?!", Flash said in confusion. "What...?!"
"Over there", May pointed with her finger. "Harry tries to keep him busy but it's not looking good."
"Hey, it really is him! PETE! Pal!", Flash jumped up.
"Flash, get your butt over here and help me!", Harry yelled.
"Why is he attacking anyway?! What is this place?! And where's Shorty and your father?", Flash started running towards his friends after he took May up.
"We explain after Peter is taken down! Be careful, it's that same slime which we saw at Midtown High when we were rescuing MJ!"
"Oh, thanks for the tip! I try to avoid it...somehow", Flash landed on the wall. "Hey, Pete! What are you doing?!"
"He's not hearing you! I already tried!", Harry shouted back. "Just stop him!"
"Okay, look out!", Flash landed into the slime. Meanwhile, Harry reached the wall and tried to climb up. He almost touched the edge until Peter attacked him and this time, managed to pin him to the ground.
"No! Help! FLASH!"
Throwing the knife away, Peter pushed Harry's head under the surface. The young man fought back in a panic.
He's trying to drown me! I can't breathe!
Grabbing his best friend's arms, Harry tried to push them away. A flashback of Ambrose and the well appeared in his mind.
Is this how I'm supposed to die? I don't want to end my days like this!
Harry's vision started to turn dark. He thought about Norman and their journey from the beginning to this point. His bond with his father had become stronger and they have had lots of great moments. How Norman had changed and how he put his son before anything else. And now, it was all gone.
But we are reunited beyond the barrier...there where Mom is waiting. Then we can be the real family.
"Oh no, you won't!", Flash got between his friends just in time and pushed Peter out of the way. Harry lifted his head back to the surface and coughed.
"You're okay?!", Flash put his hand on his shoulder.
"I- I guess...hey, thanks."
"No prob. Hold on", the bigger-sized boy took his friend to Aunt May and then rushed back to the battle.
"Harry, oh dear lord!", May put her hands around the trembling child. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine. This is not the first time I'm getting strangled", Harry chuckled a little.
"I'm glad I was able to wake Flash. I was worried about you and Peter and I still am. What has that madman done to him?!"
"I don't know. Now even Alex can't help since Ock turned him into the statue along with Toomes and Miles. And then he took Dad...", Harry broke down, covering his face with his hand. This trauma of being left behind was so deep and exhausting.
"We will get him back, don't worry. I'm not going to let that man get away with this", May assured. Harry smiled back a little.
Flash and Peter fought for a long time until the magnificent Agent Venom managed to knock his friend out.
"Phewww...what a fight!", Flash dragged Peter out of the pool and dropped him to the ground. Everyone gathered around him.
"Sweetie?", May lifted Peter's head onto her lap and tried his cheeks. "He's cold as ice..."
"Okay, would somebody please tell me what is going on?! How is Pete looking like this?", Flash cleaned his suit.
"You could tell us first who attacked you and why did you go nuts in the tunnel earlier", Harry asked back.
"I don't remember. I suddenly felt ill and my world went black. Next thing I know, is this moment."
"Damn that Ock...always making some insane tricks", Harry rubbed his forehead. "But as you can see, this is the place where the tunnel led. Alex fell into Ock's fish tank and now he's an ice statue, just like Toomes and Miles."
"Great...what about your Pops? I don't see him anywhere."
"Ock kidnapped him. He's gone", Harry looked at the ground and rubbed his shoes.
"Kidnapped? You mean they're not here anymore?", Flash's expression was very surprised.
"Nope. Ock said that they are going back to the city to finish the plan. So it's over."
"Over? Hah, we just go after them and save him."
"No", Harry shook his head.
"No?"
"It's no use. Dad refused to make a deal with Ock so there is no way he would keep him alive. And I don't wanna break my heart again."
"You can't give up. Mr. Osborn needs us and especially you."
"Stop saying that! You're only torturing me!"
"But I'm not..."
"DON'T. Let's just focus on Peter right now. We need to know what Ock has done to him."
"I think I already know. His neck is full of these same microchips that I saw on you, Flash. Look, his whole body is full of them", May notified.
"Holy crap, you're right! No wonder why he sounded like a robot", Flash said. "Yuck..."
"How polite", Harry spat. "Those wounds tell that he's been beaten up several times as well."
And because of me...I will never forgive myself.
"Can we take them off? Perhaps it will turn him back to normal", Flash suggested.
"We could try. If I do that, can you search for some supplies?", May asked kindly.
"Sure. Come on, Harry", Flash said. Standing up, Harry made one last gaze at his friend before he had to turn it away. If their plan works, Peter would soon be normal and see him...
Why do I fear that?
"This place is massive. What the heck is that thing?!", Flash stared at the octopus statue.
"No clue", Harry put his hands in his pockets. "Some Ock's fantasy I guess."
"Freaky. I wouldn't want to live here", Flash walked forward. "Hmm..."
"Seeing anything?"
"Nope."
"Great...", Harry muttered to himself. This was hopeless.
"Harry?"
"Uh-huh?"
"I know you don't want to hear this, but I don't think your Dad is dead. We have to find him."
"Why that is so important to you?! Why can't you accept that he's gone?!"
"I know you suffer. It's your father's life at stake, after all. But..."
"Flash, you're walking on very thin ice here. I suggest you drop this topic", Harry warned him.
"Listen! I'm sorry if I have come too far. It's your family and I respect your borders. I just enjoy your father's company somehow. I can't help it", Flash explained.
"Oh...well...", Harry looked embarrassed.
"But once again, I'm not trying to take your place. I was just so frustrated with your attitude and wanted to teach you a lesson. I was wrong. Sorry."
"It's okay. We won't see him anymore, so it doesn't matter...", Harry's voice shattered.
"Are you okay, dude?", Flash asked.
"Yeah", Harry shaped up. He didn't want to dwell in self-pity. It wouldn't go anywhere.
"Sure?"
"Yes, yes. Look, do you see anything useful?"
"Not quite. But wait a minute...if Ock is gone, then who the heck is flying this freaking iland?!", Flash turned his gaze at Harry who stared back.
"I..."
"Yeah! I bet this place is about to go down at any minute. We have to go before it does!"
"Then we better inform Aunt May about this. Ock took Miles and others with him so we don't have to worry about them if you get my point."
"How smart. Alright, come on!"
After reaching an agreement, the boys ran back to the aunt. But then, they stopped.
"Boys! It worked! He's awake", May smiled. Peter sat beside her, rubbing his head. He was clearly confused by what had happened.
"HELL YEA! Pete, good to see you!", Flash ran to Parkers while Harry stood in place. He was too nervous to move.
Finally...oh my god, what do I say?!
"Peter, are you alright, dear?", May asked him.
"Where...where am I? What happened...?"
"Hey, pal! Welcome back. We've been worried about you", Flash smiled.
"Flash...? Aunt May...?!", Peter stared at them both. "What are you doing here? How...?!"
"Oh darling", May hugged him. Peter responded by putting his arms around her and sobbing hard.
"I can't believe you're here! When I saw you freezing, I..."
"Shh, let's not talk about it. I know what you have been through, others told me. I'm so sorry..."
Harry watched how Parkers comforted each other. How much he missed Norman now.
Dad...if only you were here. I miss you.
"I'm sorry I disappeared like that and left you behind", Peter apologized to Flash when he and May broke free from their hug. "I just needed time to think."
"Well, I guess you deserved it. But what happened to you anyway?"
"I uhh...I went back to that factory, trying to find that body and some other clues."
"So, did you find anything?"
"I did. You can't believe what I discovered. I was coming back to tell you but I got attacked and abducted by Kraven. The rest is total blackness", Peter rubbed his head.
"No wonder, Ock used microchips to control you. You were like a zombie!", Flash grinned.
"Microchips? I see...hold on, how are you guys here?!"
"That's a long story. A lot has happened since we last saw each other. And not only good things..."
"I wanna know everything. I also need to...", Peter stopped talking when he spotted Harry. May and Flash turned to look at him as well.
"Umm...hey, Peter", Harry mumbled nervously, hands behind his back. "Good to see you. I was worried."
Standing up, Peter looked at his best friend but didn't say anything for a long time. Harry started feeling very uncomfortable.
Somehow I feel this is not going to be easy...
"Harry", Peter finally said. His tone was cold.
"Uhhh, yeah. Are you okay?"
"I guess. Some wounds here and there."
"And your head?"
"Fine."
"That's a relief."
"Yep."
It was one of the awkward moments between the boys so far. They had no idea what to say to each other and it bothered them both.
"Uhh...so, may I ask what did you discover?", Flash broke the silence a minute later.
"I know what Ock is up to. He's trying..."
"To wipe the whole city out of map", Harry finished the sentence.
"That's correct. How do you know?", Peter wondered.
"Ock told us."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Oh..."
"Yep, we know more than you think. But first, let's get out of this place and then we can talk", Flash said.
"I know a way out", Peter said. "There is a tunnel over there and..."
"Which leads to this place", Harry finished again.
"Exactly..."
"We can't use it. We need a vehicle to get back to the city and save Mr. Osborn, Miles, Toomes, and Alex. Ock kidnapped them all", Flash crossed his hands.
"Kidnapped? Okay, now I really need to know what you guys have been doing while I was here. Let's go", Peter put his mask on and passed Harry without saying a word to him. "Follow me."
"Come on, darling. Don't worry, he'll come around", May comforted Harry as they walked after Flash and Peter. The boy sighed.
I sure hope so...
-o-o-o-
"Alright, what is so interesting in here?", Taskmaster leaned against the wall. "Just admit it that your game is done and you lost."
"No, dear Taskmaster", Ock shook his head. "I will never give up that easily. I have always some backup plans. And this one is just perfect for my purposes."
"I can't wait. I know you have some brilliant in mind", Ambrose said.
"Too bad you can't see it", Taskmaster mocked the old man.
"Watch your mouth, youngster. You don't realize the power I possess."
"As if I'm interested. Your grandkid beat you up. Amusing."
"Why don't you check the halls, Taskmaster?", Ock commanded. The cloaked man grunted and fled out of the room.
"Finally some peace. Behold my green cabinets", Ock opened the door to his former lab. "Let's see if there is something that can help you."
"My pleasure. You don't mind if I wait here?"
"Not at all. I'll be back shortly", Ock went into the room. Hundreds of green tubes glowed on his both sides.
Excellent...
-o-o-o-
"Guys, over here!", Peter waved. "I found a door! It leads to some sort of garage!"
"Finally. Let me smash it", Flash said and ran, breaking the door. When the group got out, they made a very unpleasant discovery.
"Yep, no vehicles."
"Then what do we do?! If this thing hits the ground, we're gonna die", Harry gulped.
"That idiot knew it and that's why he made escaping impossible", Flash answered him.
"I'm not giving up. We have to do something", Peter ran around the garage. "We can't let Ock win and take over the city!"
"You're right. But once again, how..."
*Rumble*
"Oh no, we're falling and fast!", Harry fell to the ground.
"Oh dear", Aunt May shared the statement. "What do we do, boys?!"
"Calm down, everybody! I...", Peter said before screamed, "LOOK OUT!"
*Explosion*
*Nearby*
"What was that?!", Norman heard the explosion as well.
"How would I know? All I see is a bright orange light reaching the sky", Kraven answered, annoyed.
Walking fast to the window, Norman saw the smoke wall rising from the ground. A nasty feeling landed down into his stomach.
I hope it's not what I think it is...
"Fly over there and fast", he pointed the gun at Kraven again who obeyed. Soon they were right beside the smoke cloud.
"I don't see anything...what is this?!"
"I think I know. Well, at least we found it", Kraven pointed down at the iland which had hit the ground. Only a wreck was left.
"No...is that?!", Norman gulped.
"Yep. Whoopsie daisy. What a mess..."
"Quiet. Put this thing down and don't try anything."
"As you wish", Kraven flew the plane to the ground. Norman tied him up, forced the villain into the cage, and locked the door.
"You wait here", Norman said and rushed out of the plane. The iland was on fire and the sight was messy.
Dear lord...
Starting to run, Norman tried to find the tunnel where they first sneaked in. But it soon turned out to be impossible.
I'm not too late...they can't be...
"HARRY! MRS. PARKER! FLASH!"
No one answered. Norman circled the whole iland while calling out to others. He was desperate to find them.
"SON! HARRYYYYY!"
Only flames answered. Collapsing to the ground, Norman gave up. He was too late, Harry was gone.
"Why...WHY?! NO! NOOOO! NO, NO, NO, NO!"
Screaming and throwing some snow and mud furiously away, Norman tried to ease his pain. But it hit twice back.
"I came so fast as I could! What is it?!", Norman ran to the park. He was near his thirties, rising businessman.
"Oh hey, sweetie", Emily greeted him. She and Norman had been married for about two years and were happy.
"You sounded worried on the phone. Is everything all right?", Norman looked worried while his wife fed some red butterflies in her hands.
"Everything is fine, darling", his wife responded. "But tell me, how was your meeting Norman?"
"It was wonderful...you know something, Emily? Oscorp is still a young company and we are doing better than ever! But I still wonder who will take over after I'm old. I don't have an heir, and I don't wanna sell it either. What should I do...?"
Emily looked at him, then giggled.
"Oh hon, you are worrying way too much! Everything will be fine!"
"How come? I have to think about our future!"
"As I said earlier, I had something to tell you", Emily smiled.
"Oh yes...what is it?"
"Well, I just wanna congratulate the future father!"
"What...are you saying that...?!"
"Yes, I'm pregnant, Norman! We are gonna have a baby!", Emily smiled. Norman nearly fainted...this was not true. He would have an heir...and have a child.
"That's...that's fantastic! I love you, honey!"
Smiling, the couple left the park, butterflies surrounding them. They were really happy since soon, their family would be complete.
*Months later*
Norman had never been so nervous in his life. The labor had been very long and painful for Emily, who cried and cried.
"It's gonna be okay...gotta be..."
"Mr. Osborn?"
"Y-yes?"
"Well...I only want to say that congratulations", the nurse walked out of the room, holding a towel in her hands. "It's a boy."
Heart-melting, Norman took the bundle as it was placed in his hands. The baby was wide awake, not crying at all. Instead, his little eyes stared straight back at his father.
"He...he has my eyes", he cracked.
"Yes", the nurse smiled. "Oh btw, we have taken care of your wife. You can see her now if you want."
"Thank you", Norman entered the room where Emily slept. Walking next to her bed, he sat down.
"Emily...can you see him? He's gorgeous", Norman smiled and looked at their child. "Ten perfect fingers and toes...our little Harold."
But Emily didn't respond. Norman tried again.
"Oh look, he's sniffing...and keeps ignoring me. Looks like sleeping is more interesting than...Emily? Emily?! Oh no...hey, I need a doctor here! HELP!"
The next thing Norman could remember was how he sat in the hospital cafeteria, holding his baby on his lap. Little did poor Harry know that he would have to grow up without a mother...and how it would affect the relationship between him and his father for years..but eventually, things would clear up.
That memory broke Norman into pieces. He cried hard, letting bloody tears of his heart flush out. Harry was already sick when his life began and now he had lost him forever. His little baby who only moment ago took his first steps. Who only moment ago came to sleep into his room during a thunderstorm when he was about five. Who called him a jerk and heartless when they fought about ignorance, lies, and new rules.
"Emily, I'm so sorry. I wish God would have taken me instead of our boy. Please, I need your guidance. Give me a sign to prove my doubts wrong! I beg you..."
Norman knew this was stupid. Like some invisible forces could help.
"I don't know what to do with my life. We were so close, so close! And now this..."
Standing up, Norman made one last look at the wreck which was his son's grave now along with his friends who he just started to bond with. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel different or lonely when they were around. He was part of the group. He belonged somewhere.
Wanting to get out of this place, Norman turned to leave, and then, he spotted something. Footprints in the snow, leading into the forest.
What are those?! There are several pairs of them...could it be...?!
Not waiting, Norman sprinted after these tracks. They looked pretty fresh, so their owners couldn't be far. A glimmer of hope burned in his chest as he ran.
Please, let me be right. PLEASE!
-o-o-o-
"Finally...everybody still at one piece?", Peter leaned against a tree.
"Yeah", Harry nodded. "I can't believe we got out at the last minute."
"Thank my body for that...ouch, my shoulder", Flash rubbed it.
"It looks bad. Let me help", May examined it. "Where are we even?"
"I have no idea. And how do we get back to the city?", Harry shrugged.
"I walk if I have to. Need anything, Aunt May?", Peter asked.
"Some water would help. But I don't see a river or anything."
"I think I saw a creek some kilometers from here. I can get water from there if you want", Harry suggested.
"That would be great. Why don't both of you go? I can take care of Flash."
"Are you sure?", Peter assured.
"Yes. But Harry can't go alone. Don't worry, we'll be fine", May smiled. Agreeing, boys left. Peter walked first and Harry behind him. They didn't speak.
Darn, I must say something. But what?!
"Uh, nice breeze around here, don't you think?", Harry tried to chat with his bff.
"Uh-huh", Peter replied shortly.
"Ock picked a very nasty hideout. That statue was ugly."
"Yeah..."
"Look, Pete..."
"Perhaps you could tell me what happened", Peter suddenly turned around.
"Tell you what?"
"What has happened. If you may."
"Umm...sure", Harry said and started telling. He told everything about Norman's captivity, about Ambrose's new goblin form, their hard times at home, about Alex's investigations, what Ock told them, what they experienced when they tried to find Peter, etc. Every tiny detail that has happened during this story from chap 30 to this point.
"I don't believe this. Your grandfather is a goblin now?!"
"Yep...and he has attacked us several times. You have no idea how powerful he is."
"Until you got rid of him."
"I didn't have a choice. He was going to kill me, Pete."
"Right...", Peter stood up. This stuff needed time to take its place in his head.
"And how he lied about my grandmother just like that. Ever since he started working with Ock, this case has been a total nightmare. Ever since our argument...", Harry started carefully. Peter grunted and turned to continue their journey.
"Peter, we can't avoid this! We must talk."
"Talk about what? I don't think this is a proper moment. We have bigger problems to worry about."
"Yes, but I can see you're mad at me. And I don't blame you."
"Harry, seriously. I'm not in a mood."
"Well, I am! I fucked up and I wanna apologize."
"What there is to apologize? You made your choices we must live with it."
"You know I had to do it! Dad was in trouble."
"Yes, but everyone paid for it! Miles did! Toomes and Alex did!", Peter said in frustration. Harry sighed.
"I know and I feel so guilty. I didn't want to hurt you. Any of you."
"And yet, you sided with Ock despite what he has done to all of us."
"Why can't you see my pov?! My Dad was in danger! And now we have learned several things about our family history which makes things even worse."
"Because it's always about Norman! You adore him like he's some walking perfection. He can't do anything wrong."
"You know that ain't true. He has his flaws but I don't wanna remember them forever. I wanna enjoy his new traits."
"Really? Please, Harry, open your eyes! You were mad because I wanted to help others for a change and you avenged it by taking Ock's offer. You wanted to hurt me badly. Or am I wrong?", Peter asked angrily. Harry went silent.
"See? Hurting me was your only purpose. Nothing else. So we're done here", Peter said coldly.
"No, you're wrong! You're my best friend! I shouldn't have sided with Ock. I was an idiot. Please, forgive me!"
"You don't happen to see the point, do you?! It's not about you and me! It's about our friends and the people of NYC! You gave Ock a good reason to think he can manipulate everyone with a snap of fingers. Even your father was able to resist him, but not you."
"I was in shock! You know I fear that I lose Dad! And now I have!", Harry sounded offended.
"It's not an excuse to bring others into this! You could have talked to me but no", Peter crossed his hands.
"Well, I didn't see you coming around either."
"Don't take this out on me! You made it pretty clear that helping your family matters, nothing else. Do not defend your actions, Harry. I won't accept them, no matter what you try to say. I wouldn't have done something so cruel to my pals."
Hary started getting angry. Peter was too harsh on him in his opinion.
"Well, who hid his identity from me for several years?! Even Flash knew, FLASH! Your former bully knew before me. Some strange kids knew before me."
"I did it to protect you, you know it."
"Excuses, excuses! Your DNA took Dad away from me."
"And your dear Daddy chased me and hired Ock after me."
"So you refuse to understand? Even though I learned from my mistakes and demanded that we find you? Even though Dad was taken away and I had to go through same old traumas? Even though my crazy grandfather tried to turn me into a monster? Even though I have been ill? Even though Ock has threatened to kill us if we don't obey? Even though I see nightmares about Miles's fate every night?" , Harry's eyes were wet. He had never seen Peter so ruthless.
"What about me? Do you feel guilty about letting Miles suffer and me being a hostage for weeks? That Ock brainwashed me and I tried to drown you because of it?"
"YES! Yes, I do! But I can't help it that I care for Dad more than anyone and that's why I wanted to help him! You know how important he is to me!", Harry sobbed now.
"There it is. You care for Norman, not for me or others."
"Why is everyone so pissed off about our relationship?! I don't mock you and Aunt May!"
"BECAUSE YOU ACT SELFISH AROUND YOUR FATHER!", Peter lost his temper. "You are ready to walk over everyone, no matter what he has done to me and other people! No one can criticize him but you can throw endless shit at me and you think I don't care. But I do."
"I DON'T THINK LIKE THAT! Yes, I do defend Dad since everyone wants to make him a monster but he's NOT perfect!", Harry yelled back.
Both boys panted heavily. Their friendship was in a bigger crisis than they had expected.
"This isn't getting anywhere. If you don't want to listen, I'm out. I just hope you're happy", Peter said before leaving Harry to stand there.
"Fine! But I suppose my overdose doesn't matter, then."
Stopping, Peter looked over his shoulder.
"What?"
"Yes, I swallowed Dad's sleeping pills and nearly died but Flash saved me. And yes, I did it on purpose. I just couldn't handle the pressure anymore."
"You must be joking."
"Do I look I'm joking?"
Shaking his head, Peter kept walking. He was too shocked to say anything but didn't reveal it to Harry.
Oh man...was I too harsh on him?
Harry wiped his face. Peter was so cruel towards him and refused to see the real reason. He thought that Harry didn't care for his friends and that he blindly worships Norman and that's why he took Ock's side. But the truth was just a child's fear and mistakes.
I guess this is it, then. Our friendship is over.
As Harry was ready to go, suddenly someone grabbed him by the shoulders and he started screaming. Peter whipped around in surprise.
"Let me go! HELP! Pete! Helpp...", Harry stopped struggling when he saw Norman.
"D-Dad?! How...?!"
Not answering, Norman wrapped his son into a hug and sobbed. Peter just stared at Osborns.
"Dad!", Harry put his arms around his father. "You're here!"
"Finally...oh thank you, thank you!", Norman whispered. "I thought you were dead."
"How did you escape and find us?"
"I tell you later. But it wasn't easy."
"I can imagine. Oh, Peter's back to normal", Harry pointed out. Norman lifted his gaze towards the young man.
"Peter! How good to see you again."
"Mr. Osborn..."
"Ock used some microchips to control him. But luckily we removed them. Now we're looking water for Aunt May", Harry explained.
"Yes, I saw them and she told me that you went this way. I'm so relieved", Norman rubbed Harry's head. "I thought I will never see you again."
"Y-yeah...", Harry saw Peter's awkward expression and broke free from his father's embrace. "Perhaps we should get that water now. Flash is badly hurt."
"I can get it. I bet you two have a lot to catch up", Peter turned to leave.
"Where are you going?"
"I told you. I'm going to get that water."
"Well, we come with you."
"I'll be just fine."
"No, seriously. I wanna help."
"I said no."
Norman followed this scene in the background. Now he knew that boys were still on bad terms.
"Boys, look..."
"Oh, I get it. You're playing a martyr now. Our help is not good enough for you", Harry said sourly.
"I never said that. I'm faster if I go alone. You are defenseless if someone attacks us and I'm still recovering. I can't protect you properly", Peter answered.
"No, I can see the truth on your face. You hate me, you want to hurt me and make me feel the pain you went through. Isn't that correct?!"
Peter didn't answer.
"Hah, so I'm right. Well then, why don't you finish me right here?! Even that's better than this ignorance you're giving me!", Harry spread his hands.
"Son, calm down", Norman put his hands on his shoulders.
"Stay out of this", Harry pushed him out of the way and walked in front of Peter. "Well, what are you waiting for?!"
"You know I'm not doing such a thing", Peter said calmly. His attitude irritated Harry.
"Why can't you admit it?! You were so mad at me and now you ignore everything I say!"
"Because I'm not planning revenge. That is not what heroes do. If only you would have remembered that when you made your choices. Mr. Osborn", Peter bowed to Norman before he disappeared into the woods.
"I WAS WRONG! HEAR ME?! WRONG! WHY CAN'T YOU SEE IT?!", Harry screamed after him.
"Harry, that's enough", Norman commanded.
"But why?! Why won't he listen to me?!", Harry sat down to the ground.
"Give him some time. But I didn't like the way you reacted when I tried to help. You do not order me around, do you understand?"
"Yes, yes I do", Harry nodded. "Sorry, I just don't know how I can make him listen to me."
"You have to understand that this situation is complicated. Peter and you both need to calm down and scan your feelings and thoughts through", Norman explained.
"Hah, what are you, some psychologist now?"
"You know what I mean. I speak from experience."
"Okay, fine", Harry stood up. "Let's not talk about this now. Instead, you could tell me how you escaped from Ock."
"It was a miracle, to be honest. But I stole his plane and forced one of his criminals to fly me back here", Norman told the story.
"Wow, you made them do that?!"
"Yes. And Octavius's stuff is here too."
"Really? You mean those guns he forced you to build?"
"Yes and everything else. Now we have a chance to get rid of them for good."
"Sounds great. Wow, Dad, I'm impressed!", Harry smiled.
"I just had to get back to you. Octavius has turned Oscorp into his sick hideout while we were gone and it looked horrible. I didn't recognize my own company anymore", Norman shook his head in disgust.
"What?! So you mean...?!"
"Yes. If only you would have seen it. My life is in pieces now. Nothing can make it like it used to be."
"Maybe that's a good thing. Now we can start over."
"Yes, but..."
"Dad, why did you refuse to give me to Ock?", Harry suddenly asked. Norman stared at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean this shit could end easily. We know he would consider it."
"You want to know why? I would NEVER give you to anyone or use you to make a deal with some lunatics. Do you have any idea how many threats I have received over the years and especially after I was cured for good? 90% involves kidnapping or torturing you if I don't make certain deals or send money to anonymous threats. There are so bad people out there that you can't even know."
Harry was stunned. He had no idea about something like this.
"You have gotten threats?! Why haven't you told me?!"
"Because I wanted to protect you out of love. You know I always do my best to keep you out of harm's way. I know it has not always worked but..."
"You have done your best. Thanks, Dad."
Norman smiled and ruffled Harry's head. They didn't discuss this matter further since they didn't have to. But one thing they both knew and it was never accepting Ock's offer.
"Wow, stars", Harry looked up when the clouds moved aside. "If that's even our sky..."
"Hard to say. Hey, I have an idea. Come on", Norman looked over his shoulder before turning to see his son.
"Where are we going?"
"Let's have a quick family moment now that we're alone. Father-son moment."
"Okay", Harry took his father by the hand and they started walking. They headed out of the woods to a hill where you could see far into the horizon.
"Wow, what a view", Harry admired it. "Even though it's not actual winter, the landscape looks beautiful."
"It sure does. Your mother used to love winter and stars", Norman answered. "She loved nature as a whole."
"Really?"
"Mm-hmm. Listen, son. Remember what I said about leaving NYC if things get too heavy?"
"Yeah..."
"Well, what do you think of that idea?"
"Me?"
"Yes."
"Well, I don't quite know. Although starting a new life sounds cool but my whole life is here. The Academy, my friends...or were", Harry sighed.
Norman didn't know how to respond. He wanted to say something comfortable but words were stuck in his throat. It was hard to support his son in friendship because was anything but an expert in it. Harry's already half-healed wounds reopened when Peter was found and how clearly he judged his best pal's behavior. No room for understanding, pity, or remorse.
I want to help...but how?! I don't know...I DON'T KNOW!
"Do you want to leave, then?", Harry turned to his father.
"Sometimes but I don't want to drag you away from here against your will. Maybe New York doesn't offer anything for me anymore but I will remain here if that's what you want. Your well-being is most important to me, as you know", Norman smiled.
"Could you find something new that would make you stay here? Like Oscorp's rebuilding?"
"It's a very long process so I can't answer that. But don't worry about me, I'll be fine as long as you're doing well."
Harry nodded, looked over the horizon and after some minutes of silence, he suddenly broke down. "Dad, what do I do?! How can I make Peter understand that I didn't mean to hurt him? I just want my best friend back..."
Pulling his son into his armpit, Norman rubbed the teen's back supportively.
"Everything will be alright. Just wait and see."
But Osborns didn't know that they weren't alone. Peter sat in one of the trees and had watched the family for quite some time now. When he saw how Harry suffered, all kinds of feelings dwelled in his head.
I'm not ready yet. I wish I were...but I need time and things aren't the same as they used to be. I'm sorry, Harry. So sorry.
Landing silently to the ground, Peter gathered himself before he walked into the moonlight.
"There you are. I think we should go back."
"Oh...", Harry pulled quickly away from Norman and wiped his face. "You got the water?"
"Yeah. We better go, there is some stuff to do", Peter said.
"Now that you mentioned it, there is something I need to show you", Norman suddenly remembered. "And I think it will make things a lot easier."
-o-o-o-
"Oooh, you were right! It is Ock's plane", Flash said when they arrived at it. "How did you take it?"
"I have my ways. One of those criminals is inside", Norman pointed with his finger.
"Good. Let's give him some questions, shall we Pete?", Flash grinned as he and Peter walked in.
"Oh, you...", Kraven muttered.
"Yeah, nice to see you too. Didn't expect such a surprise, huh?", Flash crossed his hands.
"Tsk..."
"Quiet", Peter smacked Kraven so hard that the villain spat blood. "Now, we have two options here. One, you will tell us nicely how to get rid of these items or two, we'll see how fast you can fly if we push you off the cliff. Up to you."
"How would I know? Octavius keeps his secrets to himself. I simply work for him."
"Bullshit. I know you know more than you let on. And my patience has a limit. One, two..."
"Hah, you sure have guts, spider. But..."
"Guys, come out! Quick!"
"Great, now what?!", Peter muttered angrily and he and Flash headed out. May and Osborns looked at the sky, horrified.
"What is it?", Flash asked.
"L-look!", Harry pointed with his finger. When Peter and Flash turned towards this direction, they couldn't believe their eyes. Dozens, maybe hundreds of goblins flew by gliders towards the group.
"What the heck?!", Flash activated his weapons. "What are those?!"
"Goblins...I could recognize them anywhere", Norman pulled Harry close.
"But how?! I...", Peter's eyes widened when these figures came closer. "Oh my god...Fury! My old team! Coulson! Connors! MJ!"
"WHAT?!"
"Y-yeah, look!", Peter pointed at them. "They have been mutated! Avengers, and, and..."
"Holy shit...", Flash whispered. Suddenly, they heard laughing.
"Hah hah hah, there you are!", Ock landed down from the darkness, standing on glider as well. Taskmaster and Red Gobby were beside him.
"What the hell is this?! What have you done?!", Peter yelled angrily.
"Ah, Parker! How nice to see you again! What do you like my little surprise?"
"YOU IDIOT! What did you do to everyone?!"
"You could ask your father figure that. Right, Norman?"
Norman glared silently back. Ock laughed twice as hard.
"Heh heh heh, did the spider get your tongue? You're the original creator of this idea, after all."
"What are you talking about?!", Harry yelled angrily.
"Oh my dear grandson, don't you see? We turned the whole city into my kind. Every single one of them. Such a shame, you would have been a great leader", Ambrose said.
"You pile of shit! Turn everyone back, NOW!", Peter threatened.
"I don't think so. You took something from me and now I'm doing the same to you. And what's best, your dear friends will help", Ock flew higher and spread his hands.
"EVERYONE, ATTACK! KILL THEM ALL!"
