It was late at night and Harris was still up and still doing some work. Becoming a lawyer isn't easy, but he isn't going to give up on it so easily.
"Harris, are you coming to bed?" Jessica asked.
"I'll be there soon." Harris said. "I just got to finish some of this stuff here for school." Jessica let him at it and continued to work. However, Harris felt something strange. It almost felt like someone was watching him. He looked to the window and didn't see anyone, but an open window letting in a cold wind. Harris walked over and closed it with him pulling the curtains over it. What he didn't know was that something sinister was watching him.
…..
The Next Day
Paul walked in at the homeless shelter to see his mother. She asked for a little help and he came by with it. Paul walked into the kitchen and see that Trisha was hard at work as always.
"Hey, Mom." Paul said.
"Paul! I'm glad to see you could make it." Trisha said. "I'm glad you're here. I have someone coming by and delivering some food. Could you be a dear and help unload it?"
"Sure." Paul said.
"You're too late. I already got some of it." They both turned to see someone else. Paul was pleasantly surprised to see who it was.
"Annie!" Paul said. Annie Parker, the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker. They've met a couple times before and was glad to see her. "It's great to see you again. It's been years. Mom, you remember Annie, don't you?"
"Of course. Mr. Parker's daughter." Trisha said. "The last time I saw you had to have been at your father's funeral."
"Yes. Time sure has flown since that day." Annie said.
"So what are you doing all the way out here?" Paul said.
"I actually came looking for you, Paul." Annie said. "The world knows you're Spider-Man and they do their best to keep tabs on you."
"Yeah… I doubt your father would be happy about that." Paul said.
"Hey, it wasn't your fault. You did your best to keep your identity a secret." Annie said. "It was just an unfortunate incident. Maybe a good thing because it helped me learn your mother works here and I know I was able to find you."
"Find me? What for? What's going on?" Paul asked.
"I need your help." Annie said. Paul turned to his mother since he agreed to help her.
"Go. People who are hungry can wait while people who could be killed can't." Trisha said. Weird thing for her to say, but Paul went with it as he and Annie left the place.
….
The Streets
Paul and Annie changed into their costumes and started swinging through the city.
"Aren't you getting a little too old for this?" Paul asked.
"Don't worry about me. I'm still in great shape." Annie said. "Dad was older than me when he retired from being Spider-Man. It's funny. Swinging around with you makes me feel like I'm swinging around with my old man."
"Thanks, I think." Paul said. "So what's going on? What are you doing all the way in New York?"
"I'm here because of one of MY bad guys." Annie said. "You're not the only one that's made some crazed enemies that prance around in tights or whatever. I came here tracking a guy that goes by Phantom."
"Phantom? Never heard of him." Paul said.
"He's a mercenary. Takes some dirty jobs to make a pay." Annie said. "Of course, he also has his personal reasons as well. He's not someone you should tick off."
"So what's he doing all the way in New York?" Paul asked.
"That's what I'm here to find out." Annie said. "He said something about settling a score. Coming from a guy like him, that isn't something you should take lightly. Unfortunately I have no idea who he's after and what this score is?"
"So how do we find him?" Paul asked. "We could already be too late."
"Don't worry about that." Annie said. "The guy is cynical. He likes to take his time by taunting and playing with his victims. He likes it if there's a chase first."
"So do you have any clues as to where we could find him?" Paul said.
"We'll know it when we find it. It will be like his calling card." Annie said. Paul didn't quite get it, but he didn't question it because he was getting an alert on his phone. He looked to see what it was.
"Some maniac broke in New York Law School." Paul said. "They say he's a masked man with a blade on his arm."
"That's him." Annie said as they both got moving.
…
New York Law School
New York Law School, one of the schools in New York where you can become a lawyer. Paul and Annie swung over there as fast as they could. They saw the door was smashed open and people were in fear. Someone was about to run by, but Paul stopped him for a second.
"Where's the maniac?" Paul asked.
"Main office."
"Let's go!" Annie said as they both hurried as fast as they could. They both hurried over to the main office of the building. Once they found their way through, they found who they were looking for on the computer.
"Yikes." Paul said as nothing about his guy spelled friendly. He wore a skull-like metal mask with a hood and torn cape. He was in a black suit with a blade attached to his right wrist. "Is that really him?"
"Come on. I'm sure you've seen scarier." Annie said.
"Stay away." Phantom said.
"Not a chance!" Paul said as he shot his webs and wrapped him up in them. "What are you doing here?"
"The angel of death is calling. It shall be answered." Phantom said. Somehow he created a smoke screen from him and they couldn't see him anymore.
"Stop!" Annie said, but couldn't see through the smoke.
"I got him!" Paul said as he tried to pull him, but he felt his hold on him was gone. Both of them hurried out of the office and got out of the smoke. "What was that?" Paul asked as he and Annie tried to clear their lungs.
"I hate it when he does that." Annie said. "Doesn't he know smoking is bad and should be done outdoors?" They went back inside and could see he was long gone. "I also hate it when he just mysteriously disappears like that."
"What was he looking for here?" Paul asked.
"Let's see." Annie said as she walked over and worked on the computer. "It looks like the profile of a student here." Paul walked over to who this student was and he was shocked.
"Oh no. Harris?!" Paul said.
"You know him?" Annie asked.
"He's my best friend. We need to find him." Paul said as he started searching around for Harris. Annie printed out that file for there might be a clue on it. Paul looked around and tried to find Harris. "The class he should be in should be just ahead." Paul hurried and tried to get the door open, but it was locked. "It's okay. It's Spider-Man. Harris, it's me!" He saw the lights come on and the door was unlocked so he could come in.
"Paul?" Harris said as he showed himself.
"Harris, we need to get you out of here." Paul said. "That creep that was here earlier is after you. We need to get you out of here." Harris didn't wait around as he gathered his stuff and he and Paul made their way out.
"What do you mean there's a creep after me? Why would he be after me?" Harris questioned.
"I don't know and all that matters right now is that you're safe." Paul said.
"Hey!" Annie called as she caught up to him.
"Who is this?" Harris asked.
"Annie, what is it?" Paul asked. "This guy is after Harris. We need to get Harris somewhere safe."
"Hold on. Something doesn't seem right." Annie said. "If your friend is a student here and he is still here, why would Phantom look up his profile on the school's computer? He could have just chased after him because escaping form Phantom is difficult. You never know when or where he's going to strike."
"So what's your point" Paul asked.
"I don't think he's after Harris exactly. I think he's after someone that's connected to Harris." Annie said. She turned to him and held out the paper of his profile. "There's more than one address, more than one phone number. Who and where do these lead to?" Harris took a look and tried to see what she was talking about.
"That's where my parents live. That's their phone numbers." Harris said.
"Your parents? Annie, you know this guy better than I do. Why would this guy be after Harris' parents?" Paul questioned.
"I don't know, but we might have to pay your parents a visit." Annie said.
….
The Harpers
Harris' parents lived in a suburban area. They lived a simple life and had no complaints. It was night and they were starting to lock up their house.
"Dinner should be ready soon." Mrs. Harper said.
"Thank you, dear. I'm coming." Mr. Harper said as he was on his way down the stairs. However, he heard some knocking on the door. "Who could that be?" Mr. Harper opened the door and saw it was Harris. "Harris?"
"Dad, are you and Mom okay?" Harris asked.
"Of course. Why wouldn't we be?" Mr. Harper said.
"What's going on?" Mrs. Harper said as she came over. "Harris? What's going on?"
"There's some lunatic that we think is after you." Harris said.
"What?!" Mr. Harper said. "What the hell are you talking about? "We"? What do you mean by that?"
"He means us." Annie said as she crawled in through the door and stuck to the ceiling. Paul just walked in like a normal person.
"You could have just walked in like a normal person." Paul said.
"We're spiders." Annie said.
"What is this all about?" Mrs. Harper asked as she was getting scared. "By the way, nice to see you again, Paul. How are you, dear?"
"Fine, Mrs. Harper. Listen, has anyone strange come by?" Paul asked.
"Other than right now? No." Mr. Harper said. "What's going on? Who is after us?"
"A criminal from my city. His name is Phantom." Annie said as he jumped down. "He was at your son's school earlier and he was trying to get your address. Let me ask you both something. Does the name Kevin Jettson mean anything to either of you?"
"Kevin Jettson?" Paul questioned.
"That's Phantom's real name. Do either of you know him?" Annie asked.
"I can't say that I do." Mrs. Harper said, but Mr. Harper seemed really shocked.
"Dad?" Harris said. He didn't really answer. He just ran up the stairs. "Dad, what is it?!" All of them hurried after him. Mr. Harper ran to his room and opened up the closet. He dug around something and pulled out a scrapbook. He opened up and turned to a photo of him and another man that looked like it happened years ago.
"Tommy… It can't be." Mr. Harper said.
"Dad!" Harris said as he ran inside with everyone else. "Dad, what's going on with you?"
"You know something." Annie said. "Sir, if you know something, you have to tell us. We will protect you, but you need to tell us what's going on."
"Kevin Jettson is the son of someone that was once my friend." Mr. Harper said. "His father was Tommy Jettson. We were both entrepreneurs and tried starting our own business together."
…
Flashback
Many years ago, Mr. Harper and his friend, Tommy, were at work together. They started out with some digging with Mr. Harper working on a shoveling machine.
"How does it look, Tommy?!" Mr. Harper called out.
"Looking good, Kendal!" Tommy called out.
'We managed to buy a piece of land and made it the grounds for our business and work on building it.' Mr. Harper narrated. 'We were both excited, but something went wrong.' The machine started making strange noises and it started to go out of control. Mr. Harper had no control over the shovel machine.
"I can't stop it!" Mr. Harper said. He jumped out of the controls, but it still went out of control with the arm smacking Tommy inside where Kendal dug. "Tommy!" It didn't stop there as the shovel machine moved to the edge and fell inside and right on Tommy with an explosion going off.
'Tommy was either crushed or caught in the explosion. It was horrible.' Mr. Harper narrated.
End of Flashback
…
"After that, I moved to New York and started my new life here." Mr. Harper said.
"I think now I see what this is about." Annie said. "Phantom doesn't think it was an accident. He probably thinks you did it on purpose and wants revenge. We should get you out of here. Phantom is a dangerous mercenary. We need to find some place safe for you." She helped Mr. Harper up and was escorting him out, but it was too late as they spotted Phantom across the hall. "Oh great." Phantom reached for some smoke bombs and tossed them with a smokescreen spreading over the place. They couldn't see a thing, but Mr. Harper felt someone grab him by the neck and pinned him to the wall. He could see again and stared right at Phantom.
"Kendal Harper, the angel of death calls for you." Phantom said. He held his blade and was ready to kill him, but he was pulled off him and tossed to the ground with Mr. Harper running.
"I'm afraid he has to ignore that call." Paul said.
"Keep running! He'll only go for you! Phantom doesn't take extras." Annie called so Mr. Harper could keep running.
"Nowhere to run this time." Paul said as he and Annie faced him. They both shot webs at him, but he sliced right through them with his blade. He kicked Annie out of the way and went after Mr. Harper.
"Dad!" Harris called as he was worried on what would happen to him.
"Stay here. We'll take care of him." Paul said as he and Annie hurried after him.
…
Mr. Harper
There was no time for a car. So Mr. Harper was running as fast as he could. He kept his eyes open for Phantom, but with it being dark, he could be anywhere. All Mr. Harper could do was keep running, but he felt like prey of a night hunter and can't escape. Mr. Harper ended up tripping as he was running, but when he got up, Phantom already found him.
"Little Kevin? Is that really you?" Mr. Harper said. "Look, what happened to your father was really an accident."
"No accident. You committed murder." Phantom said as he walked closer to him. "You didn't want a partner. You tried to keep profit for yourself. I knew that once I became a mercenary, I would get you one day."
"Please, I didn't mean for what happened to your father happen." Mr. Harper pleaded for his life, but Phantom didn't care. He was about to kill him, but Paul came by and tackled him away from Mr. Harper. Paul tried to hold him down, but Phantom hit him in the head and knocked him off. Annie came by as she flung a trash can at Phantom and it hit. Paul tried webbing him to a light post, but he used his blade to cut himself free.
"Any ideas as to how we can take this guy down?" Paul said.
"Just one. Keep him occupied." Annie said as she got moving. Phantom tried attacking him with his blade, but Paul jumped over him. Phantom grabbed his leg and slammed Paul against the ground. He swung his blade at him and stabbed him right in the arm.
"AAARRRGGHH!" Paul screamed as he tried to get him off. Paul kicked him off and held the wound in his arm.
"Spider-Man! Over here!" Annie called and Paul ran as fast as he could to her. Phantom hurried after him. Once Paul reached her, she kicked open a fire hydrant and released the water. Phantom ran through the water and Annie pulled out a capsule. She tossed it in the water and it released a webbing over the whole water. Phantom stepped in it and ended up tripping with him stuck to it and he couldn't cut through it this time.
"What is that?" Paul asked.
"I don't have organic webbing like you. It's a special webbing substance I made to mix with water and made it stickier." Annie said. Phantom was stopped and Mr. Harper was safe with his family. Phantom still doesn't believe what happened was an accident, but at least he never took anyone's life.
…..
Paul and Annie
"Thanks for helping. Phantom will be escorted back home and locked up." Annie said as she and Paul walked through a field.
"No problem." Paul said. "It's actually good you showed up. I would have a hard time against him."
"It also gave me an excuse to come back to New York." Annie said.
"That web substance you made was great." Paul said. "Where did you learn to make that?"
"Someone taught it to me." Annie said as she stood over something. "A good man that taught me that revenge is never the right way and that's watching over us." She placed some flowers down near two tombstones of both her parents. Phantom might have been a caller for death, but there are real angels that are watching over Paul and Annie and helped them make it through this life.
