Series 2, Episode 49 ~ House of Silence

Nina let out a gasp as she woke back up, Camilla only glancing her way as she spoke, "Fabian... what happened?" she asked.

"oh, we lost at ping pong," Fabian told her with a shake of his head, "Are you alright? You dropped off," he asked with a smile watching Alfie bemused as he and Camilla whispered excitedly to one another.

"I don't know," Nina said in a panicked whisper, "I can't remember..." she gasped and looked around the room, "I was talking to you guys and then... why can't I remember!"

Patricia put a hand on Nina's shoulder and tried to reassure her but no words were coming from her mouth.

"You still can't speak?" Nina asked her getting a head shake as a response. "something really weird is going on." Nina said focusing on Alfie who nodded his head at Camilla before rushing to the other side of the room where the opposite team were stood, the smirk on Camilla's face worrying Nina as she watched Alfie pretend to be an aeroplane.

"It seems like the Frobisher shield is destined to remain at Waincot Academy after all," Mr Sweet spoke up sadly.

Alfie ran into the player wearing the hat, as planned by him and Camilla and grabbed the ping pong ball from him, laughing childishly as the boy tried to get the ball off him.

"It is my duty to present the Frobisher shield," Mr Sweet kept talking ignoring the chaos Alfie was causing.

"What a weird ball," Alfie laughed, "I like it!"

"I said, give." The boy demanded.

Nina watching as Camilla turned her finger in the air three times before pointing to the hat of the boy opposite just as Alfie ran back into him as an aeroplane causing his hat to fly off and ping pong balls, he had hidden under it to go flying. Camilla leaned back in her chair and whispered to Fabian and Nina in the chaos, "No one can prove it but I totally used magic in the Ping-Pong game so we would win." Fabian just rolled his eyes at his sister gloating, but the smile on his face gave away the fact he wasn't mad at her.

Jerome caught one of the balls the boy had been holding looking at it before looking to Camilla and Alfie who high-fived in awe, "these balls have been weighted." He spoke causing whispers from the crowd, "they have been cheating!"

"he's a cheat!" Poppy agreed with her brother getting to her feet and pointing to the opposite team.

"I didn't use them," the boy claimed, "I swear. Why would I need too?"

"You are lying," Camilla spoke up causing everyone to look her way, "I was watching you pushing up your little hat, why do you think I got Alfie to run into you in the first place? For fun? Or to prove you a cheater."

"you must have used one of these," Jerome agreed with Camilla, the boy gulping as he stood under the gaze of the duo glaring at him, "every time you served."

"Calm down you two." Mr Sweet spoke up as Camilla jumped off the stage, knowing the girl would harm the other boy if she really wanted too.

"He is cheating!" they both exclaimed at the same time defiantly. It took a cheater to spot a cheater and the two had found enough loopholes in their time to know they could argue this.

Mr Sweet turned to the headteacher of the opposite school, "Mr Saunders, we must discuss this,"

"Can someone make a decision, like, soon... my feet are killing me," Amber groaned loudly.

The two men turned back around and faced the crowd, "Quiet everyone." Silence fell over the room to hear what decision had been made, "Mr Saunders and I, in the light of this dispute have agreed that both teams will play one more round. With new balls." There were cheers from the Amun students as they realised, they were still in the running.

"Thank you, Milly I know you did more than just get Alfie to run into him," Jerome whispered as he turned grabbing her hand.

Camilla smiled back at him and squeezed his hand in return, "don't thank me, just win for your dad J," she told him causing a bright smile to appear on his face as he let her take her seat back next to her brother.

This final round was the one they all knew they had to win and the cheers from Amun academy were loud as Amber stepped up to start the game, as she went to swing something snapped and the girl clutched her arm in pain. "I think I have ping pong elbow..." she told Jerome through gritted teeth.

"Come on Amber, suck it up and start this thing!" Jerome told her.

"what's the matter?" Nina asked jumping down from the stage to see what was going on with Amber.

"I don't know, my arm just really hurts."

"Not you too..." Nina mumbled.

"I'm sorry Jerome," Amber honestly told him, "I don't think I can do this anymore."

"Oh well, looks like we win by default," the cocky asshole of a boy spoke up from across the table, shutting up as Camilla got to her feet and glared at him. the only thing stopping her from doing anything was Eddie and Fabian who grabbed her and forced her to sit back down again.

"YAY MY TURN!" Alfie excitedly jumped up as Nina helped Amber to the stage to look over her arm and Alfie got up to grab the bat the girl left behind.

"Alfie, Alfie, Alfie!" Jerome calmed down the excitable boy, "Calm down. I need you to get a grip, okay, but first I need you to get a grip of this..." with a bright smile Jerome handed him the bat and Alfie let out a childlike squeal before the two boys faced the opposite team. They were in this to win it.

And win it they did.

Apparently, without their fake balls, the other team were horrible at ping pong and with Alfie having so much energy somehow Anum Academy where brilliant. Point after point they won until it came to the very last ball.

Which Alfie hit with so much ease that the scream that came from Anum Academy could almost be heard from the small town almost 10 miles away from the school. They had won back the Frobisher Shield.

Jerome let the crowd swarm Alfie letting him get the glory for the win, he turned to look for the person who had shouted his name the moment they realised they had won.

Jerome turned to Camilla as she jumped off the stage and hugged her lifting the girl into a twirl as the two understood the importance to him of winning the shield back meant for him and his dad.

"You did it J," Camilla whispered into his shoulder allowing him a moment to process his win before he put her back on her feet their grins extra wide.

"I did it, Milly," Jerome repeated her words with a whisper.

"Go get the shield." She told him, and he didn't need to be told twice as he rushed over to Mr Sweet to take it from him and lift the shield into the air. Camilla wrapping her arms around Poppy as the two girls happily screamed along with everyone else in their win.

Of course, the win was cut short as Camilla caught Nina's eye and the girl put her hand to her eye before holding ten fingers up meaning Sibuna meeting in ten. Camilla nodded her head understanding the message, wondering how she would get Alfie along in time.

Alfie had come up with a weird song and was loudly singing it ahead of them all, Camilla and Fabian walking arm in arm talking Arabic to one another as Camilla discussed the theory of her 'curse' but not wanting anyone else to know just yet.

"Alfie can you just sit down and stop singing!" Nina shouted at him.

Alfie frowned and ran over to Camilla as she sat down on a log and looked a little like a toddler who had just been told off. Fabian sitting on Camilla's other side looking confused to where they were.

"Patricia, I know! I know!" Nina said as she looked over the girl's notepad where Patricia had started to write down what she wanted to tell people. "I need to talk to you all, please!" Nina looked around as they all sat down on their seats, "Okay, Senkhara came to me last night. She was pretty angry and I may have made her worse."

"Nina what did you say?" Amber asked the girl.

"I was upset about my gran and... I may have tried to quit." Nina explained.

"Again? What did she say exactly?" Camilla sighed in an exasperated tone.

"She said my punishment was to punish..." Nina told them all, "but I don't know how or what that even means." Patricia stood up and held up the paper she had been writing on, "when you told me to be quiet, she hexed my voice." Nina read aloud, "that's right. Fabian's been having memory issues."

"that's nothing to do with you," Fabian told her earnestly, "I'm just tired, right Cam?"

"No Fabian this is entirely to do with Nina, and her pissing off an already powerful spirit like an idiot," Camilla told him before putting a hand over her mouth and looking apologetically at Nina, she meant what she said but god it came out very very wrong.

"Fabian you couldn't even remember Senkhara," Nina told him kindly ignoring Camilla's words.

"ean min tthdth?" (who is she talking about) Fabian turned to Camilla and whispered in Arabic.

"Cam..." Amber spoke up with a curious look in her eye, "try to lie for me."

Camilla gave her a weird look but shrugged, "the sky is Or—" but the words wouldn't come from her mouth causing her eyes to widen, "I can't say anything unless it's true..." Patricia let out a snort and Camilla turned to look at her paper, "that's going to be dangerous," she read aloud off it causing the girl to send her friend the middle finger.

"I've got icky Egyptian plague, haven't I?" Amber spoke up as Patricia and Camilla laughed. "I've been aching since the tournament; I have weird spots on my arms and some of my hair has gone grey!"

"that could just be stress!" Fabian argued kindly to her, "with the tournament. As few grey hairs don't prove that..." Fabian trailed off as Amber showed him more and more strands of grey in her hair.

"Fabian just forget it," Nina told him before gasping as she realised her words, she had said something to all her friends to cause this to happen to them. She had told Fabian to forget it. She had wished Camilla would tell the truth. She'd told Amber to grow up. She'd told Alfie he was a child and she had told Patricia to be quiet. She had cursed all her friends. Nina sat down on the log behind her in despair, "I've cursed you all," she said.

"did you know that rodents can't bark?" Alfie turned around to tell the twins, both of whom looked interested at the weird fact.

"I didn't know that." Fabian honestly said to the boy.

"Alfie seems normal," Amber told Nina with a smile, "well Alfie normal."

Fabian saw the distressed look on Nina's face and got to his feet, "Okay, say it is true...then what do we do to stop whatever it is?" he asked the group.

"Senkhara said we have to complete the next task," Nina told them all.

"well, we're going to have to do it quickly," Camilla said looking around at them all.

"like that's going to be easy," Amber added causing Nina to look even more worried as she glanced around her friends.

After their trip up to the clearing, the Sibuna's knew they needed to head down into the tunnels to see what they were facing. Camilla was coming out from the girl's bedroom hallway when she heard the front door open, she couldn't help but glance down at the noise and the sight she saw caused her heart to drop. It was Mara and Jerome laughing together.

Poppy had messaged her a photo of the shield with the gem in it along with a photo of her and Jerome together, this had caused Camilla to assume that it had been a sibling moment just the two of them because she was sure if they were to have a crowd Jerome would have asked her to come along... or even Poppy. They had bonded a lot over the term with Jerome's dad problem and stuff. Or so she had thought.

Jerome threw a casual arm around Mara's shoulder as the two wandered into the living room talking loudly about the gem in the trophy and how John Clarke's bad luck was fixed. Both parties were unaware of the girl watching them from the top of the stairs whose eyes were tearing up.

Camilla hadn't had a crush in a very long time. She had been so besotted with Alfie for as long as she could remember that the concept of crushes was all but new to her again. However, as she watched the pair, she realised why it was called a crush. Her heart had dropped at the sight of them together. She wasn't stupid she saw the way Jerome looked at Mara and not her.

"Lady Camilla?"

Camilla hadn't realised she had continued her path down the stairs until Alfie appeared in her way holding a toy car aloft. The boy pausing to take in the sight of his best friend in distress – a look he didn't see often these days, mainly because he knew she was trying to act tough.

"What's the matter?" he asked instantly, handing her the car before pulling her into a seated position on the bottom of the stairs, both of them ignoring the slight pulsing of the lights around them as Camilla looked up at the ceiling as if fighting gravity with the tears in her eyes.

"Boy issues..." the truth spell was a right son of a bitch, the girl realised as the words came tumbling from her mouth.

"Oh..." instantly Alfie looked uncomfortable.

"why is it, the person I want never seems to see me as an option? I'm here and I want love, but love doesn't seem to want me," Camilla asked the empty room at large. Alfie knowing to remain silent as he seemed to have cracked open a flood gate and boy was, he out of his depth. "first it was..." Camilla put a hand over her mouth to try to stop herself from saying Alfie's name her eyes darting around in panic.

"First it was who?" Alfie asked quietly after a moment, his eyes on the closed living room doors. He never knew Camilla had loved someone, or even was crushing on someone at all. Whenever they spoke it was always about his love life or the next prank they were going to pull, somehow, she had always avoided the topic of herself. He knew he was taking advantage of her at a weak moment when the girl could only tell the truth, but Camilla didn't see the way she was standing looking broken at the bottom of the stairs or how she had been acting over the last few weeks as if the whole world rested on her shoulders and her shoulders alone. Alfie wanted to be there for his best friend, prove to her she wasn't alone that she could share the burden. He couldn't do the magic she could do, but he could stand by her and make sure she wasn't alone in whatever she had to deal with.

"Didn't you see it, Alfie? I was in love with you." Camilla couldn't control her voice as it cracked, her eyes shimmering with tears that threatened to fall. "I had been in love with you for such a long time, but you didn't even see it. You're my best friend, and you have always been able to read me so well, but you were soo blind to that." Taking a deep breath, she lowered her gaze to her shoes, not letting him have room to talk though the boy was sat still in shock, Camilla was unsure if he could even speak. So that's how her voice, even as a whisper, could be so clearly heard by them both, "you have no idea how many birthdays wishes, shooting star wishes, hell, even just plain old wishes I have used on you. Yet you talked about Amber to me constantly. Didn't you notice that I hesitated every time you asked me who it was, I like? It was because every time you asked, I was so tempted to tell you it was you, but I didn't. I knew it wouldn't matter in the end." She looked up at him finally, trying to meet his gaze, but he looked away.

When he did look back his expression was one of confusion, "Wait," he said softly, taking in his best friends' distressed appearance, "was? As in past tense."

Camilla nodded, this time the tears fell as she couldn't hold them back anymore, "I will always love you as my best friend, but I had to give up on you and move on."

"Your falling for someone else." This wasn't a question from Alfie, but a statement. An observation. He didn't need to ask who the someone was, because he knew already. In an odd way, he felt everyone knew deep down it was a case of when.

Camilla nodded her head trying to hold back the sob that was threatening to escape.

"He doesn't know does he?"

As Camilla shook her head, Alfie gathered the girl in his arms.

His best friend needed him and that's all that mattered at that moment. Everything else they would work out together, but right now something had caused Camilla to snap and she needed comfort, something he could provide to her.

There was a victory party happening for Amber and Jerome, Alfie and Camilla heading in the join everyone else after their little chat. Alfie running straight to the cake causing a laugh to bubble from Camilla causing the smile on his face to grow even more.

"Are you okay Cam?" Fabian asked, taking one look at his twin as she wandered over to him and knowing something had happened.

"I'm better," she told him honestly, "Alfie and me had a little chat." The twins glanced over at Alfie who was being reprimanded by Vera for how much cake he was eating, "it was a little overdue but I helped a lot." She told Fabian with a smile. Fabian sent her a smile back, before offering her his own paper plate of food where she saw all their joint-favourites.

"I don't feel much like partying," Camilla told him it wasn't a lie but it wasn't the truth of why she wanted to escape, for some reason she found around Fabian it was like she could bend the rules of the curse put on her, glancing to Mara and Jerome causing Fabian to look their way to a look of understanding then confusion washing over his face. "I think I'll go escape up to Victor's office, see if he wants to eat sweets in bitterness with me."

Camilla took the plate off Fabian, looking over the table before adding some marshmallow hats and party ring biscuits knowing they were Victor's favourites before giving her brother a smile. "if you need me..." Fabian started touching her arm gently.

"I'll not hide upstairs forever..." Camilla told him, "I just..."

"need to escape?"

"Yeah." Fabian nodded in understanding. He knew he was cursed but when it came to Camilla it was like it didn't count. He could remember everything she had told him, about the mage, about the lab, hell even Gary the Goat. Though when it came to other things though he had no clue what was happening at all. The moment his sister left his vicinity it was like his mind went blank and he wasn't Fabian anymore.

Victor didn't look up as Camilla wandered into his office after knocking three times, the paper plate of sweets she placed on top of the book he was looking at however did cause him to stop his work for a second.

"Victor, can I talk to you about something?" Camilla asked as she settled herself in her normal chair in front of his desk.

"Will it make me feel old and uncomfortable?" he quipped back instantly taking a party ring and biting into it.

Camilla paused to think over his question, "probably," she spoke truthfully, causing the main to raise his eyebrows in shock. "it's about love... are we protector's cursed or something because I have the worst luck when it comes to dating and it can't be me. It has to be something or someone..." Camilla paused to point up to the ceiling referring to their deity, "meddling."

The blunt honesty of the question along with the high school importance of it, actually caused Victor to burst out laughing. Camilla clearly wasn't expecting that kind of response but waited for her guardian to calm down to give her an answer, "I can't say that we are blessed in the ways of love, but we aren't cursed if that is what you are asking," the man chuckled at her, "its just a case of adding another layer to the relationship, you need to find someone who you trust to tell your secret and you know you will put in danger because our line of work will always come with danger."

Camilla let out a dramatic sigh. This wasn't what she wanted to hear, she wanted to blame her depressing love life on a curse or something.

"Those who have managed to find the balance, however," Victor spoke up as he helped himself to a cupcake, his eyes focusing on the treat than the girl, "have found their epic love." Camilla glanced at him and tilted her head a small smile creeping onto her face. This last comment she knew came from something personal in Victor's life and for once she decided not to pry. The man was allowed some secrets, and right now her knowing secrets was not a safe thing.

"one thing I know for certain is, you're going to be fun when I finally get an official boyfriend," She told him as she leaned over and took the second cupcake from the plate.

Victor looked at her bemused, "Whenever you find your person, I will be a perfect gentleman." He raised his cupcake, Camilla doing the same as they toasted the thought of her future boyfriend meeting Victor, smiles on both their faces at the amusing thought.
