Chapter 29
As Maura opens the front door she is very surprised to see Lt. Cavanaugh standing there. Good afternoon Dr. Isles, sorry to disturb you, but I was wondering if Detective Rizzoli was home? Yes sir, she is out back on the patio with our two youngest, can I order you something to drink? Following Maura outside, he greets Jane and takes a seat across from her. Maura places his drink in front of him and places another bottle of water in front of Jane, and goes to excuse herself, but Cavanaugh asks her to stay, she takes a seat next to Jane. Taking a sip of his drink, he ask, Rizzoli how are you feeling and how is your recovery going? It is going fine sir. Well I am not one to beat around the Bush, so here is why I stopped by. Rizzoli, I have been offered the Captain's position by the higher ups, and I am here by their orders, to offer you my position as Lt., if you are interested. But you say no, just hear me out, the hours are better, you can still go to the crime scenes with Dr. Isles, the higher ups are very impressed with your dedication, the fresh ideas, and your record speaks for itself. It is an once in a lifetime opportunity for you. If you want to talk it over with Dr. Isles, and think about it, you can. I need an answer in the next 72 hours, the Captain is retiring due to health reasons, and I have to step up into his position ASAP. Lt. Cavanaugh can you give Jane and I a few minutes, while we step inside, please? Sure Dr. Isles, take as long as you both needs. Jane, sweetheart come with me, I need you to help me with something. Both ladies checked on their sleeping children, excused themselves and went into the living room.
Once in the living room, Jane asked Maura what do you think, baby? I still considering retiring, but Lt. Cavanaugh is right it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially for a woman? Jane, I really don't think retirement is right for you, you loved being a Homicide detective, you are very good at it, you have made an awesome Segerant-Detective, and I think you would be an amazing Lt.. You will be able to still do the job you love, we can continue to work together, etc. You would be crazy to let an amazing opportunity like this pass you by, I will support you either way, taking the Lt. position or retiring. You can do this, I will be by your side, and will help you in anyway. Leaning in to kiss Maura, Jane pulls her into her arms, panting as they break apart, Jane says baby I love you.
It was 4 days later, a press conference was held announcing the appointments of Captain Sean Cavanaugh, Lt. Jane Rizzoli-Isles, Segerant-Detective Vincent Korsak and Segerant-Detective Riley Cooper. Maura proudly pinned the Lt. bars on Jane dress blue uniform, and took her place beside Jane as their children and others looked on. After the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony, Constance, Arthur, Korsak, KiKi, TJ, the children and a few other went out to celebrate. Everyone enjoyed themselves, Maura had ordered a cake for both Korsak and Jane. Jane had been released from her Doctors the day after accepting the Lt position. After talking it over with Cavanaugh and Korsak, they all agreed that with Korsak staying on for a few months, that Riley Cooper would be an excellent Segerant-Detective. Riley Cooper agreed to take the position, with Jane moving up to the Lt position, Cooper taking the Segerant-Detective, and the lost of 3 Detectives, they would next to hired 4 new homicide detectives. So now Jane, Korsak, and Cooper were going through applications for new homicide detectives. Cooper asked if it would be possible to give Frankie another chance? They all agreed it would be a good idea, since he had experience, but the Mayor and other wanted to wait another 3 months, and after talking to Nina, who said that Frankie wasn't ready yet, and he was still new in his recovery to add the pressures of being back in homicide, they all agreed to wait. Four Homicide detective's positions needed to be filled, so they arranged to interview 20 applicants over the next 3 days. Detective Eric Holden, was hired, female Detective C. J. Young, was hired, female Detective Shay Tripp, was hired and Detective Cam Jackson was hired. Each one had different things to offer to the homicide division, and would add alot to it. It was agreed that the new detectives would not know that Jane and Maura were married, it was something that was agreed upon when they had returned from Paris years ago, and especially after the Frankie situation, and the Kent situation. There was alot of new officers, detectives and other staff members, including in the morgue.
The next few weeks was busy with new cases, Jane still went to every crime scene, observed autopsies, and observed the new homicide detectives. Korsak and Cooper worked well together, Cooper was learning things from Korsak and the others. Jane was a natural as a Lieutenant, everyone was very impressed with her knowledge, suggestions, and they loved the fact that she still went to crime scenes, and worked closely with Maura. With Maura's assists, she had applied for a $200,000 grant for the homicide division. Some of the grant funds were used to buy new bulletproof vests, body cameras for each Homicide detectives, and she was continuing to research on other equipment that would help her Detectives. Maura had also received a grant for $200,000 for the morgue, she had purchased the latest equipment for the lab. Surprisingly, Jane even let Maura decorate her office, there was a few conditions that Maura had to agree to, 1) no uncomfortable, God ugly furniture, 2) no pink, and 3) no African masks. Maura just laughed and agreed, pulling her wife into a hug and kiss. Jane had to used the conference room for her office, while it was being done, she was not allowed to see it until it was completed. So today was the day that Jane was finally getting to see her office, Maura was extremely excited she had worked with a contractor and decorator to get it done in 4 days. Leading a blindfolded Jane into her office, taking off the blindfold, Jane couldn't believe her eyes, her office was decorated with different awards from Jane's police career, Red Sox's stuff, a hanging frame with four different pictures of Jane her rookie picture, one of her getting her Detective's shield, one of her getting her Segerant-Detective sheild and the most recent one of her getting her Lieutenant's sheild, another picture of Jane with Barry Frost, one with Korsak, and one that had Frost, Maura, Jane and Korsak. Her desk was just like Maura's, on it was 4 different pictures frames, one of their wedding picture, her favorite picture if just Maura, one of just their children, and one of all of them, her computer and a few other personal items, a special office desk chair was behind the desk, a small fully stocked refrigerator, a coffee pot with Jane's favorite coffee, creamers, sugar, as well as Maura's teas, her favorite coffee mug, one for Maura and 4 other Red Sox mugs, a docking stations for her I pod and phone with speakers, a sofa, with 2 chairs. Jane was speechless, all she could do was pull her wife into a vise grip hug, and kiss her. Finally she was able to say thank you, baby, you have no idea what this means to me, Maura that you put so much into this, you know me so well. Closing the door, Maura tells Jane, sweetheart, I wanted you to have a place that represents you, one that is comfortable, not stuffy. This is who you are, a highly decorated homicide detective, a die hard Red Sox fan, and most importantly you are my life, my world and our children's world. You are my everything. No one was allowed in Jane's and Maura's offices, except Korsak. They were locked at all times. Since the poisoning, the Governor, Mayor, Chief, and higher ups had implemented that their offices be locked.
It had been 7 months, since Jane's promotion and she was busy not just with managing the homicide division, but also dealing with administrative duties, budgeting, staffing, and other various duties. They had agreed that any problems that happened in the homicide division was to be handled first by Korsak and Cooper, if they couldn't handle it, then it was brought to Jane's attention. The Homicide Division was continuing to solve cases, the new detectives had worked tirelessly, and was working together like a well oiled machine, but had one Detective that kept bucking both of them in the authority department, she thought she was God's gift to woman, and had been zeroing in on one woman in particular. She was one who liked to cause trouble, and spread awful lies, she had already broken up a marriage and relationship. And was now working on her next set of victims, she had been warned by several officers and other detectives, that the last thing she wanted to do was piss off the higher ups, but laughing as she her remarked that maybe Dr Isles's spouse needed a little competition. She was told to stay away from the morgue, but she continued to ignore them. Detective Shay Tripp decided on a plan and was going to go after one Dr. Maura Isles. Heading down to the morgue, in search of the beautiful Doctor, she had sent flowers, left a few notes, chocolates, and a couple other gifts over the last few days, but got no acknowledgement or anything. She thought Dr. Isles was just playing hard to get. So today she was going to step it up and ask her out, maybe even kiss her.
