Chapter 49.
=Gobber's POV=
[June 5; Night]
[Isle of Berk]
I still can't believe that four months have passed since the day Hiccup became an official member of the Dragon Hunter tribe. I had seen it coming after Viggo and Ryker told me in our conversations during Hiccup's birthday party that they had offered Hiccup place with them since back in November upon arriving to Hunter Isle after the riders attacked them. Hiccup hadn't made any decisions at that time, and I assumed it was because he didn't know if he could trust that the whole tribe wouldn't have an issue with him or his powers. However, as I expected; Hiccup stopped their raids, changed their minds, trusted them fully, and was now one of them. Now, obviously the lad isn't a dragon hunter, but after some discussions; it was decided to keep things named the way they were, just with a different meaning. The island is Jerger Eyja, which stands for Hunter Island, and the tribe among themselves, at least, refer to themselves as the Dreki Verndarar, or Dragon Protectors. To everyone else, they are still dragon hunters, but the meaning is that they hunt dragon down to protect them from people hunting them. There is still no hurting or killing, there is capturing, but only to safely move them in the ships without attracting attention to themselves.
The crest of the hunters hasn't changed either, it works to empower the hunters that they reign in dragon protection and no one can stop them. I know it's odd, but of course, Hiccup was the one to suggest all the ideas and I couldn't be prouder of him. Hiccup is even doing better in his healing, reports from Viggo and Ryker show that Hiccup sits down with them two or three times a week to talk about his time captured, flashbacks, or nightmares. The sessions don't last long, but apparently; they are helping and Hiccup seems much happier now that he's opening up about what he went through. Also that Hiccup's got a tribe and home again; that makes him happy too. I haven't been to see him since March 5th; I stayed a week there, but knew I had to return to Berk. I wanted to be there when Hiccup did his first sessions, to make it a little easier on him to reveal things to the brothers, since he'd done it with me. I stayed at the Guest House while I was there, and got to assist Hiccup in designing his new home. Mainly just where it would go and his few sketch ideas for how it would look.
Hiccup's letter to me in April revealed that the hut was done, he was moved in, and loved it. As expected, Hiccup resides right on the forest edge, one of the farther back homes in the village and it was near the island's edge because Hiccup just had to have a launch pad that sits over the ocean. The best part, according to the lad, is the sights he gets to enjoy. Sunrise, sunset, waves, dragons in the forest or seat; I'm looking forward to seeing it when I visit again. I'm not sure when that will be; I don't want my tribe to get suspicious. I know Hiccup said he doesn't care, but I'm saving him a headache by not telling anyone. Though, that's not entirely true; I did inform Dagur that Hiccup is still with the hunters, and happy there. That's all Dagur needed, and I know he told Heather too; I can trust they'll not spill anything. Hiccup says his house has a lot of extra rooms and stables, so next time I see him; I'll get a full tour and can stay with him.
I'm hoping to plan a trip soon, just not sure when. Right now, Johann is here and I told Hiccup I'd be his eyes and ears when the traitor came through and report anything suspicious. The man pulled in around 4:00 pm, I was busy and will check things out in the morning. The weather isn't looking good, so I feel Stoick will invite Johann to stay the night and leave tomorrow morning. I know Johann will be taking advantage of the chances to look around and possibly gather information. Well, too bad for him; I'll be doing the same. I promised Hiccup I was helping him in this battle, and I absolutely would. In other developments, Astrid is upset about her decision to leave Hiccup, understand that if she hadn't; they'd be married, probably with a child, and Hiccup would be chief by now. Hiccup would have stayed if Astrid hadn't left him, but the lad felt like he lost everything after Astrid broke up with him. And I don't blame Hiccup one bit for leaving; I just wish he'd have told me first. It doesn't matter now, I'm okay as long as I know he is.
Snotlout is trying to impress Ruffnut to be with her when he takes over as chief. There hadn't been another choice for Stoick other than stepping down and letting another family get voted in, so the truth came out that Spitelout and Stoick were brothers, half, but that still made it legal when only applying that there was blood-relation through their father. By default, this meant Stoick could claim Snotlout as his heir due to the relation, even being that it was a third or so. It still meant Snotlout was one-third Haddock, and Stoick's nephew, so Stoick could claim him and had started his training a while back after receiving Hiccup's letter about renouncing his status as heir, Stoick's son, and that he would not be returning. From what I understand, Stoick plans to make Snotlout chief when he completes the training, but Snotlout is still Snotlout and it likely will still be a while off. The tribe is not looking forward to things, but realize they can deal with it or leave and it's their fault Hiccup left.
Fishlegs is still smitten with Heather, but they remain friends, for now. Tuffnut remains interested on nobody, but that was to be expected as well since he's attached to his twin sister. Stoick is miserable about losing his son, and honestly; I don't feel bad for him. The tribe messed up, I'm glad they realized it now, but it's just too late because they drove Hiccup off with their mistake to not accept him. Some are still holding onto hope that Hiccup will return, and if that were to happen; Stoick could reclaim Hiccup as son, and that would return Hiccup to heir status as firstborn and able to rule. What none of them know is that under self-exile, Hiccup was a free Viking to be basically adopted by another tribe, and that is what happened. So if Stoick ever wanted to get Hiccup back now; He'd have to work with Viggo to change tribes. And I know Hiccup wouldn't want to leave the hunters, not after all they'd done for him.
So it would have to be Hiccup's choice to return, and then also allowed by his chief, which is Viggo. Blood didn't matter in exile or self-exile. And that's what made it so grand for me to know how the tribe felt now. Nothing but guilt for what they'd done in making Hiccup leave because the other part is that none of them know if he's even still alive except for me and Gothi. I did tell her the truth, and obviously, she doesn't talk, so Hiccup didn't get upset with me for telling her. I also don't know what's going on much with the Hiccup and Runa situation; I haven't received any notifications from Hiccup, or the brothers that things progressed there, so I'm assuming Hiccup hasn't picked up Runa likes him because he's got so much going on. I know the lad stays busy between dragon training and forge work, now also maintaining his home. Oh, and Cinder lives with Hiccup too, just outside in a stable because of his enormous size as a Titan Wing dragon.
For me right now, I've closed up shop for the night and will heading to the hall for dinner. I usually grab my food and ignore everyone. Once I made sure the doors were locked as I had a back entrance to get into my house which was above the forge anyway, I started my walk to the Great Hall and saw Johann coming as well with Stoick to eat. Wonderful.
"Coming to dinner as well, Gobber?" Stoick asked.
"Yes," I replied.
"I didn't see you first in line to come on the ship, Gobber. It was always you and Master Hiccup," Johann laughed a little.
I eyed him, but kept my path. "I was busy today. I'll drop by tomorrow morning before you leave if that's okay?"
"Certainly! You're one of my best customers," Johann nodded. There was some silence now. "Has there been any word on your son, Stoick?"
Stoick sighed. "I'm afraid not, Johann," He revealed.
"Did my information help at all?" Johann wondered. Alright, now I need to pay attention.
"Aye, the riders did locate Hiccup with Viggo and Ryker Grimborn on their ship," Stoick nodded.
"Was the rescue unsuccessful?" Johann asked.
"Hiccup claimed that the hunters didn't kidnap him, that they were friends and he was fine," I stated.
"Oh, dear. They must have wiped his mind or done something to make him believe his enemies are his friends." Johann acted surprised.
"That's what we fear," Stoick looked down. "I had no choice but to claim my nephew, Snotlout, as heir. At least until a time comes that Hiccup returns or we can successfully save him and return my boy home," He informed.
I rolled my eyes, Stoick shouldn't be giving up so much information, but I couldn't blow the cover that word reached Berk of Johann's traitorousness yet. "Do you believe Hiccup will come back?" Johann inquired.
"Of course. My son knows I love him, and what happened was an accident. The tribe knows their mistakes," Stoick said in an assured tone. "Hiccup will come back; he has too. He's…The heir, the next chief. I plan to train him right away after he marries Astrid, and then I'll name him chief of the tribe," He smiled.
"What a wonderous event that will be!" Johann beamed. "I promise to keep my ears and eyes open for if I hear anything else of Master Hiccup's whereabouts, Stoick. I'll send word to you right away,"
"I appreciate at that, my friend. I can always rely on you to bring me the up to date news of the Archipelago," Stoick laughed, patting the man on the back. I rolled my eyes again, getting into the hall and moving to get my food quickly.
It took me a good twenty minutes to collect what I wanted, then make my way out and to my house. I always washed and returned the dishes I took from the day before at breakfast. While heading to the forge, I passed the docks and saw a dragon flying overhead, but not one I'd seen before. I was trying to commit it memory to check the dragon manual later, or let Hiccup know because this dragon had a rider on it's back. The dragon landed on Johann's ship, quickly hurrying below and obviously hiding. I moved to hide near the ship when I saw Johann coming, his cheerful goodbyes to the tribe under the excuse he thanked them for dinner, but needed to make sure things were ready for tomorrow's sail beyond the boundary to stock up again. Johann made it to his ship and looked around for something.
"I told him to meet me on deck!" Johann muttered angrily.
"Settle down, Johann. I'm right here…" A second voice came, it sounded like an accent in the male's tone. I moved to get a better look, another piece I needed to remember for Hiccup. "And meeting on deck is a terrible idea, what if we're caught?"
"Then I'll say you're my associate who I asked to meet me here for the sail outside the Archipelago. If they ask how you got here, you're a dragon rider. But if we keep this quick, no one has to know anything," Johann remarked.
"Bad plan. Stoick knows me and the boss; he'd recognized me right away," The male rolled his eyes.
"Krogan, shut up and tell me what you discovered. Have you found the boy?" Johann growled.
"I don't take orders from you, Johann. We both work for Drago, and he partnered us for reasons I will never understand," Krogan crossed his arms over one another.
"Because as you pointed out, the Vikings trust me and would recognize you. Now…What have you found out on the status of Hiccup Haddock?" Johann glared.
"I checked in with all our ships; none have seen him with his Night Fury," Krogan said.
"Not information I wanted. The dragon hunters should be on their hunting season about now, what of them?" Johann inquired.
"They've been spotted, but no boy or Night Fury with them or flying around. There's no telling Hiccup is even with them anymore, it's been under a year since you claimed he was with the Grimborn brothers," Krogan huffed.
"It was the truth, and I assume he's still with them because he didn't have the Night Fury at the time either. The dragon is probably long dead now. It escaped when Hiccup did," Johann rubbed his beard. "We need that boy and his powers…And with him angry at Berk's betrayal; Stoick has stated this evening that Hiccup has not returned here either…That leaves Hiccup with the hunters or off on his own with another dragon for transport…"
"So why don't we find Viggo or Ryker and interrogate?" Krogan asked.
"That's a lot of ocean to cover to find them, but I believe they're biggest port is the Southern one…Perhaps we can ask around there if the hunters have been through and where they went next, keep following the trail," Johann suggested.
"The boss is becoming impatient with there being no progress in his plans. We'd still have the boy and the dragon had you not made the foolish decision to use his dragon's life to make him cooperate. All it did was land us in the water miles from each other, the boy and the Night Fury long gone." Krogan accused.
"We had orders to find out what he could do!" Johann defended quickly.
"And said testing would have been better saved for when we reached the base and could have kept him from escaping even if his powers sparked! We lost him and the leverage because of you!" Krogan snapped.
"Well, he didn't get away with the Night Fury; we took it's tail rig and he can't fly without that so I assume Hiccup and the Night Fury were also separated. The dragon, is as I said, likely dead," Johann remarked.
"But you don't know for sure," Krogan rolled his eyes. "They could have reunited and then we're really screwed and Drago will have your head,"
"Quiet. Our only chance is to locate the hunters and get answers when the Grimborn brothers are found. So get your fliers up and searching, we'll cover more ocean with sky involved. We'll meet again in two weeks at the Southern Port," Johann told him.
"Fine, but we only have until the new year. If we don't have the boy or what Drago wants from him, remember that we both die for failing him. Drago can't see his plans of world domination through without Hiccup, so do keep your temper in check and if he's found…Don't put him on the brink of death again! Drago thinks he has a better way to get what he wants, but only if we get the boy first." Krogan informed as his dragon came on deck, was mounted by Krogan, and then it took back into the sky, disappearing from sight.
"As soon as I get my hands on that boy, I'm going to make sure the only thing he knows is do as your told or pain…" Johann grumbled.
Gobber quickly moved away from Johann's ship and slipped silently back to the forge and got upstairs, panting. Thankfully, Ember was there with a reply from Viggo and Ryker on how this week's therapy went with Hiccup. I need to send word to Hiccup about this… Gobber thought, setting his food down, abandoning it for the time being as he grabbed a piece of paper and started writing a message to Hiccup about what he learned tonight. While Gobber wrote the message, making sure to include everything imperative, and let Ember have two fish, a chicken leg, and water to be ready to the trip back to brothers in the morning as it took some hours to get there. I just hope Hiccup can figure out what to do and this all stops, or the poor lad will never recover… Gobber sighed before rolling up the letter and setting it with Ember, then he began to eat and pray that everything would work out.

=Normal POV=
[June 6; Midmorning]
[Hunter Isle; Grimborn Home]
It was decided to have the therapy sessions in the morning after breakfast, so Hiccup would make his way over to the Grimborn house around 9:00 am and then sit with Viggo and Ryker in the loft space, which had the space for Toothless to be with Hiccup during the talking because a lot of things were still difficult, especially this time of year when Hiccup was on the brink of death after an horrible, painful day or torture where he managed somehow managed to escape his captors and then was found in the water by Viggo and Ryker. The talking usually consisted of Hiccup being asked how he was feeling that day, and if there was anything he wanted to talk about. If there was, they'd talk about that and if not; it would pick up on whatever the last session was about, or something else from past sessions to check on how things were going. Hiccup admitted that this was helping, but he felt he still had a while to go before he could call himself good or great again. Hiccup felt he was okay, but that was good for the fact he was eating three meals a day, sometimes snacks, and sleeping better, but still had nights where it was hard to find rest.
The sessions lasted an hour to an hour and a half, it depending on the topic. The brothers now mostly knew everything from Hiccup's time as captor, those awful two months. The parts Hiccup still wasn't talking about yet was anything that was sexually-related to his torture. Hiccup admitted that he'd been touched and penetrated, but that was as far as Hiccup was willing to say on things, for now; he said he wasn't ready to go into detail about it all. The brothers understood, of course. Hiccup still couldn't remember a lot of the sexual things, or that last incident where he blacked out when Toothless was going to be killed. Today was Agnar's fifteenth birthday, and there would be a party later on. Right now, Hiccup was just ending his session with Viggo and Ryker, he'd been there since 9 am, it was about 10:30 am.
"Well, I think this is a good place to stop for today," Viggo smiled.
"Yeah, I'm kind'a tired after all that," Hiccup confessed; it hadn't been an easy session and it took some coaxing from the brothers, but Hiccup gave in and broke down a little during today's talk as it was starting to get to the sexually-related actions done to him. Still nothing in great detail, but it was hard for Hiccup to even begin talking about it.
"It's understandable, Hiccup. Getting help isn't what makes healing easier, it's working through it. And that does mean having to revisit those painful memories," Viggo reminded.
"But don't be down about what happened today, or any of the others, Hiccup," Ryker started. "Talking and letting out how you feel instead of holding it in is what will make things a bit easier too. Let others see your pain, it's nothing to be ashamed of." He added.
"You've come a long way from last year when you woke up on the ship and were terrified of being in our presence and refusing to discuss anything with us," Viggo said. "So take pride in that, and be proud of yourself for coming this far," He encouraged.
Hiccup nodded. "Yeah, I guess," He yawned.
"What are your plans the rest of the day?" Ryker wondered.
"Uh, probably home to take a nap. I'm tired, and last night was one of those ones I didn't sleep well. Then maybe go on a flight, check in at the academy, clean the house, maybe drop by the forge and see if Ulrik needs help. I'll probably see you for dinner in the hall, though. Agnar's party, right?" Hiccup asked.
"Yes, normal time for dinner, about 6:00," Ryker replied.
"Alright, I'll see you guys later then. Thanks for today, it helped…" Hiccup tried to smile. "Same time tomorrow?"
"Of course," Viggo nodded to him. Hiccup waved before getting on Toothless and heading out the loft's back deck door then flying to his house. The brother's stood, and headed downstairs to see their wives getting some treats ready for the evening.
"How did the session go with Hiccup?" Hertha wondered softly.
"Making slight progress every day, still a long way to go though. This boy went through hell with his captors, and we're barely touching the surface of the worst parts because Hiccup goes into a panic when he starts remembering," Ryker explained.
"It's always the hardest part, but at least there's some progress," Truda said. "Oh, Ember returned from Berk with a message. I had him wait here since you were with Hiccup," She informed, bringing the letter to Viggo, then kissing his cheek before returning to help Hertha.
"Thank you, love," Viggo smiled as he unrolled the paper and began to read, his eyes slowly going serious and face falling from the smile.
"What's wrong, brother?" Ryker inquired. Viggo looked at the added sheet and then looked at Ryker.
"We need to go see Hiccup, right now. Gobber has sent information regarding the situation," Viggo hinted upon noticing the children coming in.
"He just said he was going to rest," Ryker reminded.
"I know, but this can't wait…" Viggo remarked. Ryker nodded as the two brothers moved to leave the home quickly, and head over to Hiccup's. This was his game, so he needed to be informed immediately of Gobber's findings.
