「PART IV」
「The Quest」
「Act 59: The pass of Murky Mountains」
Celestial Forest, Eanor, 37 ABY
Hux was standing by the carrier droid, sucking his teeth, and staring moodily into the gloom where the river roared stonily below; his desire for adventure was at its lowest ebb. He was never a sucker for adventure, Ren used to do back then all the dirty work, he never really stepped out of his comfort zone. Now, he followed Rose blinding to this kind of mission without overthinking the possibilities as he always did.
Rose stepped next to him "It's time," she said gazing at the anxious figure of Hux and softly crapped his hand holding there for a moment "We have to go!" she added and shared a smile with him "The first part of our journey is flexible the rest will be hard and dreary."
Hux refused to gratify that with a response because he already thought that their journey was exhausting. And now there was Rose assuring him that it would only get worse. So it was almost against his will that he found himself mesmerized Rose interference to guarantee him that things would only get worse. But it sounded like Rose Tico, since the day he met her, she kept treating him cruel and she enjoyed it. And slowly Hux came to like it in a bizarre way.
"What have I missed?" Poe angled towards Zorii and whispered, "Hugs and Rose seem comfortable close!" He had observed the pair since yesterday and the familiarity between them struck him.
"Really hoped I'd have to explain that part," Zorii said, "All those months you were away from the base, those two became really close."
Poe smirked gazing at Zorii "Rose and Hugs close friends! Zorii you surely lived through unforgettable times."
"You're outta luck and missed it," she scoffed "I don't want to relive moments like those." Zorii cocked her head closer to his ear and murmured "They aren't just close friends!" then she pulled back and looked at Poe.
"We are in our way to trade with more danger and everyone is busy falling in love!" Poe grumbled in disappointment as he and Zorii hiked behind the rest of the company.
"Why?" Zorii asked curiously "Who else is?"
"Hux and Rose?" Finn suddenly interrupted them as he appeared between them "I would never believe that Rose was after bad boys!"
"Me neither," agreed Zorii "And I honestly never wanted to know that detail about Rose."
Poe wrapped his arm around Finn bringing him closer "You lost one of your girls, Pal!" he nudged him.
Finn shook his head "I already talked with Rose, our timing was just not right! Though things didn't work out with Rey as well. But I still have Jannah!"
Zorii shifted her head confused, staring at the two friends. Poe winked at her and explained, "Finn here had fallen in love with Rose, Rey, and Jannah at the same time." He turned and looked at his friend "Maybe even with me, Zorii you should be careful you might be next!"
"What?" Zorii puzzled "He likes you?"
But Zorii never got her answers as Finn interrupted them "No, Poe! I'm more mature now when it comes to love. My feelings about Rey haven't changed. But since she isn't interested I might go for Jannah!"
Poe tapped his back one more time, he was not sure what to say to Finn. His point of a few about following in love was ridiculously "Good Luck buddy!"
Zorii and he watched Finn approaching Jannah, they both sighed as they figured out what he would talk with her. "Finn then is into you then?" Zorii asked Poe once more.
Poe nodded as he didn't really want to talk about the subject. "He simply is into everyone!" he said, dropping his gaze.
"You two have amazing chemistry," Zorii observed, "as a couple, you would be perfect."
"Come now Zorii, don't tease me!" Poe complained as he stepped onwards, ending there their conversation as he didn't want to talk about it any longer.
The company steadily hiked through the Celestial Forest, aiming to reach the deep valley. Ben and Rey ignored each other as they didn't want to acknowledge what had happened last night. For both, it seemed a mistake that shouldn't have happened. And they silently agreed not to speak about last night's kiss.
Inferno-Tower, Terror Mountain, Eanor, 37 ABY
Castle walls, pebbles scattered on a clammy mossy gravestone, rockery overspilling with an assortment of virescent leaves, like towering cliffs, stood out from the shelter of the mountain-side of Terror, from which it ran and then returned again. One who passed in and came at length out of the echoing tunnel, beheld a plain, a great circle, somewhat hollowed like a vast shallow bowl: a mile it measured from rim to rim. Once it had been green and filled with avenues, and groves of fruitful trees, watered by streams that flowed from the mountains to a lake. But no green thing grew there in the latter days of Delkor. Nothing managed to live through the darkness that was surrounding the area.
The roads were paved with stone-flags dark and hard; and besides their borders instead of trees there marched long lines of pillars, some of marble, some of copper and of iron, joined by heavy chains, to the center all the roads ran between their chains. In the middle of the tower, the stones and stairs stood Delkor he swept down the stone stairs "It's been a while Dark you haven't sought my counsel. For that is always why you had come, is it not?" he asked Dark Rey although he already knew the answer.
If the land of Eanor, built on blood and bone, could talk and beg for deafness. Though, Dark Rey couldn't hear the whispers of the darkness, tales of lives lost and deaths of agony that echoed around the staircases of twisted rock. And even if she did, she was still trusting Delkor. She moved quickly towards him, grimy and thoughtful. "Master! The Sith's Soulstone has arrived in Eanor. I can feel it." she responded with a seriousness in his voice.
"Are you sure of this?" Dark Enemy buzzed as he stepped down the stairs, that had much to say and no ears willing to hear, no soul willing to feel the torment that lay within. "Why can't I feel it's presence! I am connected to the ancient darkness! Why is it that you can sense its presence and I can't?"
"Beyond any doubt, Master. I don't know its exact location but I can feel it." Dark Rey lied climbing up the stairs and following Delkor inside the Iron Fortress.
"And yet you do not have the wit to see where exactly it is! Something has slowed your mind," he commented, as they slowly reached the side of the cavernous central chamber.
"We still have time to locate it," she assured him "It could take them months to reach the mountain of Terror. They have to bypass so many dangers and our army."
"The ancient darkness has regained much of its former strength. It can't yet take physical form...but its spirit has lost none of the potency. Concealed within our fortress, and beyond, that ancient darkness lidless, wreathed in flames." Delkor divulged proudly. "In flames and anger, it tries to find its way back. And the answer lies inside the Blackstone, we have to obtain it, at any cost."
"You know this? How?" Dark Rey asked him, her master had taught her many of the dark arts of the Sith and of the old darkness, but he never revealed to her how he managed to establish such a connection with the old darkness. "It's a dangerous tool, Master. We cannot simply use it!"
"Why? Why should we fear to use it?" he voiced as he sat on his throne. "The hour is later than you think. Our forces are already moving, they will find them and the Blackstone. I feared this, your failure to spot its location, or are you hiding something Dark. Lately, you have changed. Do not think I haven't noticed!"
"The fallen court of the King?" Dark Rey asked him worried "Why would you send them after them?"
"I have sent all my forces after them. Because I can't trust you fully these days. You seem more arrogant than you used to be. I can feel your conflict, your urge to rule. You spent your time into diplomacy and politics these days like you have unannounced plans." he outlined.
"Of course not, Master!" she lied again "I'd never do such a thing!"
"For your own good, I hope you won't betray me!" Delkor warned her.
Dark Rey nodded and bowed in respect taking her leave. She took the root of the dark corridor towards the open space, trying to keep her mind in place. Her master was right lately she had changed. The shadow that was visiting her had promised her more power and wealth than Delkor would imagine. It promised her ways to rule not only the north Regions but the whole galaxy. And she accepted the offer. Though this game was a double blade knife that could easily lead her to her doom. That's why she had to be careful of her actions.
Murky Mountains, Eanor, 37 ABY
The Company set out and turning now half east they steered their course towards the murky Mountains, which far away still glowed faintly red in the first light of the showing Sun. A few days ago they tried to enter the deep valley but the way was shut. The enemy had already camps all around the valley and it was impossible to pass through it without engaging in a battle. That's when they decided to take the next best option through the murky Mountains.
"Winter deepens behind us. The heights away north are whiter than they were." Ben said as he snuffed the air. No one had talked for a long time. They spent almost two weeks to pass the Celestial Forest and one more week to take the way back since they couldn't pass through the deep valley. They had run out of food and were now only relying on fruits from the forest and fish from the river.
"We must go on; and it is no good our delaying the passage of the mountains. It's wise to cross it as fast as we can!" Poe noted, "If it takes us weeks, we wouldn't last!"
Ben's feet drove into the snow, forging a way through a growing blizzard as he guided the company along a narrow ledge on the pass. Everyone followed as they had a chill feeling that something was going wrong. Thankfully it would only take them a few days to pass through the Murky Mountains, and everyone was wise enough to bring their coats and warm clothes. Because it was only getting colder as they kept hiking along the narrow passage.
Light whispers could be heard through the mountain as there was kind of darkness trying to affect their passage. With a rending echo, a horde of rock slabs and boulders fell from the mountain's arms. The party shoved themselves flat against the sheer cliff wall to avoid the onslaught of stone. There was a rising darkness Ben and even Rey could feel it now.
A lectured fight started between both Ben and the unknown darkness trying to weaken the mountain and the other to put it back to sleep. The rest were trying to survive through it. As lightning struck against the tip of Murky Mountains, sending more snow against everyone. Rey suddenly snatched Ben from the edge, pulling him against the cliff just before the ice-fall hit. They ended up covered under the snow.
Poe spoke first "We must get off the mountain! Make for the gap in the deep valley and take the west road to the city!"
"The gap is filled with the troops of the enemy, we cannot fight them all!" Ben noted, "We won't make it!"
"If we cannot pass over the mountain, let us go under it." Rey interrupted them "I have read the texts there are more ways to reach our destination!"
"We don't know what we are going to face under the mountain. I'll not risk this mission!" Poe ordered, "We will continue through the mountain!"
"There are many powers in the galaxy, for Good or for Evil. Some are greater than we know. And against some, we have not yet been tested." Ben spoke worriedly gazing at the angry mountain in front of them.
"Let's hope Solo, we won't need to test them!" Poe added as he tapped his shoulder and hiked forward.
The company continued through the unsettled passage until they reached the walls of the Murky Mountains, from there they would pass through the gap of the mountains and find their way to the Blossom Forest. They managed to walk through the passage in only three days. Then they ended up in the walls of Murky, the rocky cliffs were now united creating a cave passage darker and scarier. Ben approached it and paused observing the new path they would have to take.
"I don't trust it... " he said walking deeper into the passage and the rest followed, suddenly the entrance rattled and the rocks collapsed blocking their way out. "The passage is blocked behind us now and there is only one way out... on the other side of the mountains. I fear from the sounds that boulders have been piled up, and thrown across the gate."
"I felt that something terrible was near, from the moment that my foot first touched the snow," Rey admitted as she took a step next to Ben and she talked to him after long weeks for the first time.
"This place cannot be trusted. We should never come here." Hux complained as his hand searched for Rose's and grabbed it gazing uneasily around him.
"We now have but one choice. We must face the long dark passage in front of us!" Poe added, "Let's go!"
Slowly everyone agreed and followed Poe, they didn't have another option. They continued now their journey through the dark passage between the Murky Mountains waiting to encounter new rising dangers.
