Chapter Six: Pirate
Page was starting to feel the seasickness. It hadn't been bad all of yesterday, the waves had been pretty smooth. But in the middle of last night the rain picked up and Page was thrown from side to side in his crate. He was not happy, to say the least.
He hasn't puked yet...but he was almost there.
Page listened to the uneven stomping of feet on the deck above him. He leaned against the side of the crate and took deep breaths. Suddenly he heard a loud crash as the door to the stairs were opened and slammed shut. Page didn't really care who it was at this point. Then he heard the gunshot. The loud pop made him jump. He had only heard that noise once before but he knew what it meant. Trouble.
"Page...Page!" Page recognised Pearls voice even in her hysteria. He pushed open the box and looked out to see Pearls tear-streaked face. He hopped out and she ran to him burying her face in his chest. He patted her back awkwardly and listened for more noise upstairs. The constant drum of footbeats continued.
He lifted her face from his chest. "Pearl, what's going on?" She sniffled and wiped her nose on her sleeve. Today she wore a loose ruffly red shirt with a black corset and black pants. Page tried to focus on her answer.
"P-Page. I'm... I'm so sorry!" The tears resumed. A sense if foreboding built in his chest. He placed his hands reassuringly on her shoulders.
"Pearl, what's wrong?" She tried to take a deep breath but her throat was ragged from all the crying.
"They found us..." She stopped talking mid-sentence.
"Pearl your not making any sense. Please just tell me what's going on!" The anxiety was building in his chest. When Pearl replied she was eerily calm.
"You're on a boat full of Pirates, and the English just found us." Pages jaw dropped he took a few steps back from her.
"You're a pirate?" His anger seemed to hurt her, he could see it in her eyes. Suddenly all the commotion made sense. The English were... Attacking!!
Pearl stepped forward slowly like you would approach a scared animal with her hands out. "It's ok Page, you're going to be safe." He looked at her quizzically.
"Uh, ok." She cocked her head.
"You're not scared of me? Now that you know who I really am?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Pirate or not Pearl. You're my friend. I just wish you would've included the part that you were a pirate when you convinced me to sneak on board." He gave her a pointed look and she stared at her boots. Shame radiating from her. "So, what can I do to help?" Pearl looked up clearly surprised.
"You want to help?" Page nodded. He heard her mutter something under her breath like "Perfect, idiot." Then she walked over to the sword rack on the wall. It was mostly bare. She pulled out one that was relatively small and tossed it to him. He stepped aside as it clattered to the ground next to him. He picked it up. It was perfectly balanced. He noticed carvings down at the bottom of the blade. It was rubbed away, but he could still make out the letters. WT. He shrugged and took a defensive stance. Slashing once or twice through the air. It felt good. He made his way out of the barrels to stand by Pearl. He could hear the swords clashing from upstairs now.
They shot one more look belowdecks, then both Page and Pearl rushed upstairs into the fray.
