One minute to go.
Lifting his gaze from his wristwatch, Kevin fixated on a pink glow moving about in the night sky. He felt every excruciating second pass by, hoping and praying for it to end. She was so far away.
He was beginning to hate these sessions. Every week, Gwen would turn into her Anodite form and let loose as a way to hone her abilities. At first, it was just for one minute, then two, then five. Today, she was aiming for 10. When she first started practicing, she still seemed like herself and it was fairly easy for her to revert to human. Slowly but surely, however, her personality began to change whenever she transformed. She became more reluctant to change back, distracted by her immense power.
To make matters worse, she was out in the open in a park this time instead of indoors. She could simply fly away into space and he wouldn't be able to stop her. Kevin hadn't been this anxious in a very long time.
Gwen, on the other hand, hadn't been this carefree in a very long time. She had no idea how much time had passed or how long she had before she would have to turn back into her weak human form, but she was having too much fun doing loop-de-loops to care. Everything seemed so small from her vantage point, and not just in a literal sense. Her daily human stresses seemed insignificant and inconsequential. She was slowly starting to grasp the power surging through her body. If she really wanted to, she could be a goddess. Of course, she didn't actually want to. There was more to life than power. She loved her family, friends and Kevin far too much to fully let go.
Right. Kevin. She almost forgot she left him standing alone. Spotting him looking up at her deep in thought, she descended from above.
Perhaps the most obvious difference between Gwen's human and Anodite forms was her appearance. She had purple skin, her usually vibrant green eyes were fully white and her trademark red hair was replaced by long pink tendrils. Kevin had to remind himself that she was still Gwen, even if she didn't look like her.
He glanced at his watch. "Time to change back."
"Aw, really?", she pouted. "I feel fine!" She sounded somewhat intimidating in this form. Her soft, soothing voice was joined by a deeper, more monotone voice, as if two people were speaking as one.
Usually, Kevin was the one who would want to do something risky for fun and Gwen would have to talk him out of it. This time, the tables were turned. "Gwen, seriously, you gotta change back. If you stay Anodite for too long, you'll lose your humanity."
Gwen didn't get what the big deal was. "It'll just be a few more minutes. I can handle it!", she boasted. "I've come a long way since I first went Anodite."
"But you haven't come close to mastering all that power. It's makin' you think you can handle stayin' Anodite for a little while longer, isn't it?" He looked deep into her eyes, pleading with her to listen to him. Gwen could tell he was practically panicking at this point. "The longer you stay this way, the more detached you'll become. You'll forget your friends, your family and me."
"Kevin, you're such a sweetie." She ran her hands up his arms and shoulders, then placed them on his cheeks. He winced, not quite used to the way her hands felt in her Anodite form. "You have nothing to worry about. You're not going to lose me, okay?"
"But-"
Before he had the chance to say more, a pink glow covered her body, reverting her to human. "See?" She moved her hands down to his chest, smiling warmly. "Going Anodite makes me think and see things a little differently, I'm not gonna deny that, but it would take a lot for me to forget you."
Kevin chuckled awkwardly out of embarrassment. "I guess I might've overreacted. You just seem so different whenever you go Anodite. I can't tell if the real you is in control, y'know?"
"I always am. For what it's worth, I'm sorry for making you freak out." She intertwined her arm with his, leading him to his car. "Let me make it up to you. Let's get you something to eat, my treat."
Kevin's face lit up. "Have I mentioned how much I love you?"
I finished the first half of this a long while ago, but I couldn't figure out what to do with it. I'm glad I managed to think of something in the end. I hope you guys liked this!
