Dom and Michael arrived at The FIRM's medical facility to find String pacing around the waiting room.
"Michael! Get in there and find someone who will talk to me about Cait, no one is telling me anything" said String angrily, pointing his finger down the corridor.
"Hawke, she hasn't been here long, at least give them a chance to carry out some tests and make her comfortable."
"I want to see her Michael"
"And you will but let them do their jobs first!"
"Look, whilst we are waiting, can I at least bring you up to speed on what Caitlin has been helping us with?"
"Like, I said Michael, do as you like, but don't think I have forgiven you for letting her get involved in this."
Michael sighed
"I realise that Hawke. Cait has managed to fill in a lot of blanks for us on this and we are now in a position to take this gang out. We knew they were bringing drugs across the Mexican border and we suspected that this was via the river, but every boat we intercepted was clean. Cait overheard a conversation where the expression 'Tub men' was used. I had Samantha look into this and she found that the term relates to smuggling around the coast of the England in the 1800s."
"String will you quit pacing and sit down!" said Dom taking hold of String's arm and guiding him to a chair. "Sorry, Michael please continue."
"Thank you, Dominic. It turns out that Tub men were used to transport the smuggled goods from the beach in land, often on foot or by horse back. From this we were able to ascertain that the gang are probably using another old method of concealing the drugs by stringing bundles together and floating them just below the water. This means that the stuff can remain hidden in plain sight until it is safe to retrieve it."
"So, why are you telling us all this Michael, it sounds like you have it all figured out" said String.
"Thanks to Cait, yes we do! The message I retrieved from the locker room gives us a location and a time for the next importation, which is tomorrow night. I'm telling you this because I want you to take Airwolf down there, stop the importation before it gets onto US soil and destroy the gang's headquarters. You can leave the rest to us"
"Just like that huh?" said String
"We have no reason to think it will be anymore than a seek and destroy mission….although I must admit, we don't yet know just how well armed the gang is" said Michael stroking his moustache as was his habit. "Will you take the mission Hawke?"
"I'll tell you after I've seen Cait" replied Hawke standing and heading towards the door. Before he had a chance to leave a doctor appeared.
"How is she Doctor? Where is she? I need to see her" said String
"We have taken some x-rays and scans of Miss O'Shannessy's head and I have to say that she has been incredibly lucky. There is a little bruising, but no internal bleeding. The external headwound looked worse than it was due to the bleeding, but we have that under control now and all stitched up. She was lucky you found her as quickly as you did, otherwise it may have been a very different story."
"Can I see her?" asked String again
"Yes, she is sleeping now and we have given her a light sedative just to give her a chance to recover properly, but she'll be just fine. Come with me, I'll show you where she is."
Dom watched the tension drain out of String as he let out a deep breath and allowed his whole body to relax.
"Are you coming Dom?" asked String as he started to follow the Doctor.
"You go ahead kid, I'll be along in a bit."
String followed the Doctor who led him along the corridor, opening a door on the left. String stepped inside. Cait was sleeping peacefully, there were no wires or tubes, but she did have a large bandage on her head and her hair was poking out from the sides of it. String walked over to the bed and leaning over, tucked some errant strands of hair behind Cait's ear. Now he was there, String didn't know what to say, he just knew that he had needed to see her and that he needed to know that she was OK. There were so many things he wanted to say, and surely it ought to be easier with Cait unable to respond to him, but it wasn't. Why couldn't he do this? He had thought nothing of giving up his time and sleeping in the hangar to keep her safe over the last few weeks, so now why couldn't he manage to utter a few words to let her know how much she meant to him. Taking her hand in his, he put his other hand against the side of Cait's face, leaning over he kissed her gently on the lips. As String got back to the door of the room, he turned once more to look at Cait. Of course he would take the mission, he owed it to Cait to finish what she had started.
As String left the room, he bumped into Dom.
"How is she String?"
"She's sleeping Dom. Is Michael still here?"
"Yeah, he's in the waiting room."
String went to find Michael.
"Michael. We'll take the mission and finish what Cait started but I want someone here with Cait when she wakes up."
"OK Hawke I'll…"
"YOU won't go anywhere near her Michael, leave her alone, if it wasn't for you she wouldn't be lying in there like that now!"
"I was going to say Hawke, I'll ring Marella!"
"Fine" said String, putting on his glasses and striding out of the room.
