The Doctor and Clara ran after Merry and her escorts. They rushed through an entrance and found themselves in a huge amphitheater, Merry on a pedestal in the center and hundreds of aliens in the bleachers.
The Doctor skidded to a stop and grabbed Clara's hand. "Hold on," he whispered quickly. He jumped into the air, pulling Clara off the ground.
"Whoa!"
"Shh!" the Doctor hissed.
Clara stared at the ground as the Doctor flew to the bleachers and over the heads of some aliens.
He found a spot, but they had to squeeze in. Clara's feet touched the ground and the Doctor floated down. The aliens on either side of them had to move a little to make room.
"Excuse me. Sorry," the Doctor said as they sat.
A golden forcefield appeared around Merry and lifted the frightened girl off the pedestal as the crowd watched with concern.
"Okay. What's happening?" Clara asked, "Is this supposed to happen?"
"Help!" Merry called as she flailed.
"Is somebody going to do something?" Clara pressed, "Excuse me? Is somebody going to help her?"
The forcefield began to carry Merry toward the temple.
The Doctor jumped off his seat and flew toward Merry, speeding up with his rocket boots. He spread his arms to slow down just in front of the forcefield. He touched it and jerked his hand back with a shout as it zapped him. He flew after it and tried again with the same result. "Merry, you have to reach out! I can't reach in!"
Merry flailed inside the ball, too frightened to think clearly.
"Merry!"
She looked up at him and slowly reached out her hand. Her hand touched the edge and she was able to force her fingertips out slightly. The Doctor shot his hand in to grab hers. He grimaced with pain as he pulled. The forcefield was pulling him in. It was too strong. He couldn't pull her out. He shouted with the effort, but the forcefield snapped Merry's hand back in, ripping it out of the Doctor's grasp.
The Doctor looked into Merry's terrified face. "I'll come back for you. I promise, I'll find out what's happening and save you." He forced himself to turn and fly away.
"Doctor! Come back!" Merry called.
The Doctor struggled to keep going as her scream hit his ears. He pumped his arms and flew back through space to the amphitheater where Clara waited, watching from the edge.
"You didn't save her?!" Clara questioned accusingly.
The Doctor flew past her and grabbed her hand, barely slowing down, jerking her after him. "Imagine you're weightless and then you can fly with me."
"No!" Clara dragged her feet on the sandy ground as hard as she could as the Doctor pulled her through the stalls in the market. "Why are we leaving? We can't just walk away! This is my fault! I talked her into doing this!"
The Doctor slowed and let his feet touch the ground. He turned to face her. "There's one thing you need to know about travelling with me . . . well, one thing apart from the blue box and the two hearts. We don't just walk away. Now imagine you're weightless." He grabbed her arms and bent down to pull them over his shoulders as he turned around. He jumped and flew with Clara on his back. He flapped his arms, struggling to keep his height, but she began to feel lighter.
The Doctor spotted Dor'een's stall and flew down. Clara let go, seemingly happy to be on the ground and also sad the ride was over.
The Doctor barked at Dor'een and she barked back. He patted his pockets, looking for something of value. "I need something precious," he said, turning to Clara.
"Well, you must have something, all the places you've seen."
He pulled the sonic screwdriver out of his pocket. "This. I don't want to give it away. It comes in handy."
"You're one-thousand years old. And that's it, your spanner?"
"Screwdriver," the Doctor corrected.
"Why do you need a moped spaceship anyway? You just flew with me on your back."
"Yes, but then I'd have to fly you and Merry back from the temple. That is a very long, upward flight with two passengers. Maybe I could do it, but it's easier and faster this way."
Clara gave up and looked at a ring on her finger. She touched it nervously. "It's my Mum's."
The Doctor watched her, allowing her to make the decision for herself. Clara removed the ring and handed it to Dor'een. Dor'een hovered her hand over the ring and accepted its value as payment. The Doctor kissed his hand and touched it to Clara's forehead as he walked past her to the moped. They climbed on the moped and flew toward the amphitheater and Merry. The tiny, glowing forcefield disappeared inside the temple in the distance. The moped flew rapidly toward the temple.
