THE LAST WESTERN SPIRIT

Chapter 06: A Gathering of All Clans

"How dare he deny us the identity of the chosen disciple!" said Madam Yu as she threw another vase into the wall. Jiang Fengmian tried for all its worth to calm her down but to no avail. His wife was at a temper and she will not back down.

"Now dear Ziyuan you need to calm down," he said to her and she turned her temper on him.

"I WILL NOT CALM DOWN!" she shouted at him and threw another vase at him.

"They need to tell us who it is or I will unleash Zidian on them!" she shouted. Jiang Fengmian held his hand up, but his temper was just about frazzled as well as hers.

"Look I know you want to know the identity of the disciple, but we have to trust the Lan to keep him or her safe. It is for safety reasons that their identity is hidden from us. Or else we would only put them in danger," her husband said.

"From who? The Jin? The Wen? The Nie? Who would dare try to harm a Jiang Desciple! For all the fuck we know it is that good for nothing Wei Wuxian! Or worse our dear Jiang Cheng or have you forgotten about that!" Madam Yu shouted and thankfully Jiang Fengmian was glad he had placed a silencing talisman on the door to their room or someone would have checked up on them by now. With all the things being thrown about in the room and all the things destroyed Jiang Fengmian had about enough of his raging wife.

"Yu Yiyuan sit your fucken ass down now!" he ordered his voice loud and deep and full of rage. She glared at him and he glared right back at her. His stance was not subsiding one bit as they held their ground against each other.

"Fuck you Jiang Fengmian! Fuck you for bringing that damn son of a whore home!" Madam Yu shouted as she threw down the last vase at him. This time Jiang Fengmian blocked the vase and threw it into the nearby wall.

"Are you done yet?" he said to her his eyes burning with anger.

"Done? Done? What business is it that a fucken lizard decides the fate of our race? What right does it have to be a god?" she shouted at him her anger finally getting to her as she unleashed Zidian. Thankfully for her Jiang Fengmian managed to catch the whip before it could damage the doors and that would lead to trouble with the Lans.

"You will stop this nonsense this instant!" he shouted at her.

"Or what? The Lans would kick us out? Let them try!" Madam Yu said to him her hand held Zidian as she tried to pull.

"The Dragon Spirit is the very thing that is keeping our world from being consumed by resentful energy! It feeds on it and in return it gives off healing energy to allow us to live. If it dies then the world dies as it did before!" Jiang Fengmian said to her.

"What fairy tales! Such nonsense does not exist in our world. You make us believe that this dragon is able to protect our world from such calamity," she said to him a huff in the air.

"You know its true as well Ziyuan or else why are you here?" said Jiang Fengmian. The woman stopped her ranting and sighed she put away Zidian but her posture remained rigid. She was not satisfied but she would have to calm down.

"All my life I was told that the dragon spirit was a creature of myth and legend. Something that inspires future cultivators to join a sect and learn the art. But becoming the wife of the Jiang Sect and learning of the ancient vow of the five more in depth. I come to hate what legends have done to us. Such secrecy had made it nearly impossible to believe that such things exist." she said.

"What made you change your mind?" asked Jiang Fengmian looking at her with concern.

"My mind has not changed! It is conflicted when I saw even the mighty QishanWenSect here in the Cloud Recesses." Madam Yu said her mind troubled when she finally calmed down.

"Does this have something to do with the fact that Lan Qiren refused to tell us which of our disciples was chosen?" he asked. She shook with anger when he said it and took that as a yes.

"We have every right to know the identity of the chosen disciple! He or she is from our sect! We have every right to know…" she gave a sigh at this point all the anger left her, but the determination is there, "But you are right in one thing. They are trying to protect the chosen one. So Lan Qiren thinks that whoever it is, is in danger," she said to him and he nodded, "I've heard rumors that Wen Ruohan has been searching for the legendary Yin Iron. The object that was created by Xue Chonghai," he said to her.

"You mean the object that was created from the bones of the lost dragon spirits. A thing that holds such resentful energy that it destroyed our world and left it in ruin?" she said to him and he nodded, "Yes the very same. Very few remember it's existence and for nearly three thousand years we had kept it safe. But times have changed and the Yin Iron has come back to destroy us," he said to her. Her eyes widened with a thought.

"What about the Xuanwu of Slaughter?" she asked him and he looked down with worry.

"That is what I am most afraid of, that creature has not been seen for centuries. The last report of it was four hundred years ago. It killed nearly 1500 cultivators that tried to subdue it to no avail," said Jiang Fengmian.

"So this creature does exist? Even after what? Three thousand years?" Madam Yu replied and Jiang Fengmian nodded, "It was last seen in the Qishan territory and Wen Chao had taken personal interest in finding it." Jiang Fengmian said to her.

Probably to kill it, Madam Yu thought as she turned to her husband facing him more fully now.

"You said that the Xuanwu killed nearly 1500 cultivators was it just from one sect?" she asked and her husband shook his head, "No it was from all sects. Apparently the sect who called it at the time was a smaller sect whose name I had forgotten. They had been investigating a series of unusual deaths in their region somewhere near Qinghe I think when they found that creature. They realized that the creature was so large that they had to call for help. The other sects came to help, but many died. Then it disappeared again somewhere in QishanWen territory. That is why Wen Chao has such interest in it. He wants to find it so that way it can cause no harm. But if that creature existed then the dragon existed too." Jiang Fengmian said to her.

"Tell me husband have you seen this dragon egg that they have here in Gusu?" she asked him. He nodded his head, "Only once when I first became sect leader and before we were married. I was brought here by my father to see the egg in person. It was a rather large egg the size of an arm, but the power that radiated off of it is enough to melt a man's body. In fact I've heard that the grandmaster of the Lan sect has touched it and his hand is now black as coal," he said to her.

"Do you have proof?" she asked him.

"We, can ask him when we leave for the assembly tomorrow," he said and went to his bed. Madame Yu only looked at him once before she went to her own bed.

THE NEXT MORNING

The next morning saw all the sect leaders at the main hall where the elders normally gather. It was the most private area, and their disciples are elsewhere at the moment. Right now the elders and the sect leaders of each clan spoke in hushed tones. Surprisingly some clans lack elders namely the Nie and the Jiang. There are no branch families and no cousins to go by meaning these families will soon vanish if no new heirs are produced. The Jin as well as the Wen, and the Lan are the only families with extended members. Their elderly outnumber the Nie and the Jiang But they are still respected because of the amount of disciples at their beck and call.

"The Order of the Dragon is here to commence!" said a disciple of the Lan Clan. The others turned towards the Grandmaster who sits on his seat at the head of the room since the Lan Sect is hosting. To his left is Wen Ruohan and his elders and sons Wen Zu and Wen Chao. To the right of the Wen Sect is the Nie Sect with Nie Mingjue sitting alone with his brother Nie Huaisang and retainer Meng Yao. Across from them near the head of the section to the left was the Jin Sect with Jin Guangshan with his only heir Jin Zixuan, his wife Madam Jin, and his elders. On his left was the Jiang Sect with Jiang Fengmian his wife Madam Yu along with Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng. Wei Ying due to both his injuries and not being an official member of the Jiang family is not allowed to attend. Also missing was Lan Wangji who also could not make it because of his injuries.

"What is the meaning of this letter that you have shown us Shigong? Why the secrecy about the chosen disciples?" asked Nie Mingjue leaving Nie Huaisang confused as to why he was here. Others began to question it as well. The Grandmaster held up his hand, "Before we start going off in tangents maybe it is time we share our story with those of us who don't know," he said wisely. The Sect leaders turned towards their children. Their wives knew but the children did not.

"Very well," said Jin Guangshan, "Let's see what the children know about the story of our origins," he said waving his fan around as if he was the one hosting the conference.

The Grandmaster then waved his arm into the air carving out a talisman before flinging it in front of everyone. Instantly the reality around them changed to show a completely different world.

"Three thousands years ago our world was completely different. We were at war with a man named Xue Chonghai and his demonic minions," he said and it showed thousands of people being slaughtered by all sorts of dark creatures. Horrified the others watched in alarm as men and women were fed to such creatures.

"The reason why our world fell was because of Xue Chonghai's greatest crime against the cultivation world. You see thousands of years ago ancient creatures roamed our world feeding on the yin energy and converting it to yang. The Yin energy is what sustains them; yet it never corrupts them. These creatures are known at that time as the Western Spirits or the Western Dragons. These creatures originated from a world that is completely different then ours." the Grandmaster then waved his arm and the scene changed to that of a world with tall buildings and colorless streets. People wore plain colored clothes and the area looks dark and eerie.

"This world is known as 'The West,' for it is said to be found beyond the Western River of time. To cross it one has to first travel into the underworld and cross the river of the dead. But that is speculations. Only those who are chosen can see this world for themselves." the images changed to show different areas of this world which makes people look at it in awe.

"The West, is a dangerous world where resentful energy is everywhere. Once in a while a soul who has recently passed from that world is somehow chosen and transported to our world to be reincarnated as a sacred beast." the image changed to that of the Western Spirits again.

"They only speak the language of their region of the West and therefore we can't understand them. Only through study were we able to translate some of the western languages and surprisingly enough there are records of a rare occasion where one comes into our world speaking Mandarin!" there was a murmuring among the people here in the room. Only when they quieted down did the Grandmaster continue.

"But that all changed when Xue Chonghai gained power. With his power he and his followers killed every single one of the Western Spirits. Slaying them so they can fuel his ultimate device, the Yin Iron." he said and in front of him showed the ancient artifact. Everyone started to mutter to themselves fear growing among them.

"The Yin Iron feeds on resentful energy because it is made from the bones of the dragons themselves." said the Grandmaster causing everyone to gasp in alarm. There was a muttering of words spoken among the younger generation. Their parents nodded their heads to show that the words they spoke were true. Even Madam Yu looked pale at the sight of the Yin Iron.

"The dragons were slaughtered by the thousands so that their bones and their blood could be used to create this terrible weapon. When the war broke out there was no clan sects. The cultivation sects at the time went by schools taught by teachers not clans. The only one alive now who still practices the ancient techniques is Baoshan SanRen. The immortal cultivator who lives on her unknown mountain somewhere." the Grandmaster said to the audience.

"When the war ended and Xue Chonghai was killed by Wen Mao the world was nothing but an endless desert. It was a desert of death filled with the corpses of those who died, humans, animals, plants. All were gone and destroyed leaving nothing but devastation and monsters. Since there is no dragons to feed on the creatures of darkness. The world became filled with them. All those who survived were among those who fought. Men, women, a few civilians all of them living in fear. The cultivators who lived through that war included the founders of the five major sects sitting here today." the Grandmaster said showing the five all together in the desert.

"At the end of the final battle with the Xue's minions Wen Mao founder of the QishanWenSect delivered the final blow destroying Xue Chonghai. The corrupt man fell but as he fell he laughed knowing the goal he was trying to reach has been completed. In the aftermath Wen Chao, Jiang Chi, Lan An, Nie Song, and Jin Li discovered the remnants of Xue Chonghai's darkest deeds. In a chamber behind the main school the bodies of dragons were found." he showed the image in graphic detail. Some of the people ran out to hurl their guts out while others tried to hide their faces at such a horrific sight.

Jiang Fengmian turned to see Jiang Yanli look a bit green as she tried to stay strong while witnessing this. Jin Xixun however couldn't hold back and ran from the room to hurl. Wen Xu and Wen Chao both looked green, but neither of them moved. Nie Huaisang hid behind his brother shivering from the sight of the gruesome bodies. The Lans also looked a bit green. Lan Xichen wanted so badly to run and hide from such horrors, but he held firm only by his uncle's hand on his shoulders. But the elder jade was visibly shaking.

When the others returned did the Grandmaster continue his tale of death, "They had used their instruments to carve into the flesh of these ancient and beautiful creatures releasing so much Yin Energy that it destroyed our world. They saw what they were using the flesh and bones for in forging weapons of death. Similar to how the Nie use their sabers they used their dark methods to create weapons of great spiritual power. Swords, sabers, spears bows all sorts of things to give them an edge during the war. But their greatest weapon was the Yin Iron itself. How it was forged was so evil that no one would dare speak of it. When they saw the object outside those who touch it would burn to ash with how much dark energy was used to create it." he said showing the entirety of the Yin Iron.

"But surely such an object would not be so evil if Xue Chonghai could touch it," said Jin Guangshan.

"That is the thing, he didn't touch it directly," said the Grandmaster showing how it floated not far from its master. He was only drawing upon its dark power but never touched it.

"Then what happened to it?" asked Nie Huaisang as he still cowered behind his brother.

"The Yin Iron was taken by the five founders. One of the pieces resides here in Cloud Recesses," said the Grandmaster as he produced a single shard and threw it onto the ground shattering the image in front of them. The object lay motionless in front of everyone not a single person moved to touch it. It dark energy has long since been gone.

"When the five and their followers fled the dark school. They were pursued by all manner of dark creatures wanting to devour their flesh and destroy the last remnants of humanity. But then salvation came inside a cave. The five and others with them had fallen into a cave when the dark creatures found their camp. With little energy left they entered the cave and that is where they found the temple." the Grandmaster then waved his arm and the image appeared of the dark temple with the statues in front of it.

They watched the group enter the temple and find the hidden valley full of life.

"It was here that they found the nesting site of the Western Spirits. No one knows where exactly is the temple for it has been lost through time, but they did find the egg," he said and the image showed all five surrounding an egg. The egg was motionless in front of them. The images vanished showing only the image of the egg in front of them.

"The last dragon's egg gave them hope as was still intact and alive," the Grandmaster said and they watched as all five of them held each other's slit wrists over the egg.

"The last Western Spirit is still alive when all five of them made that ancient vow. Promising to protect the egg at the cost of their lives. They took a blood oath and bound themselves to the egg. And they broke the Yin Iron apart into four pieces scattering them. As you saw the last piece is here in Cloud Recesses dead to the world," he said and the image returned.

"How did it die? Why is our world renewed? Did the dragon hatch?" asked Wen Chao who was curious only to receive a slap behind the head from his father.

"The dragon did not hatch," said Wen Ruohan to his son, "It became dormant when it was unable to feed from the resentful energy. Isn't that right Shigong?" he asked the Grandmaster and the man nodded.

"The dragon egg was unable to feed because it was dying," he said and they gasped when the image changed to that of Lan Yi. "It was Lan An's granddaugher Lan Yi who discovered the secret of the Yin Iron and used its powers for herself. She unleashed her own form of darkness, but she only had a fragment of the dark object. She became corrupted and insecure with her position and sought to destroy the then still emerging GusuLanSect. She killed any member of the clan who showed disobedience. So it was with great strain that the elders imprisoned her inside the newly built temple of the dragon. A place where the dragon's egg was being kept safe from the world. Created by all five sects as a means of security, and a way of warning for those who wished to destroy such a prized treasure. But Lan Yi also discovered how to feed the dragon's egg while she was imprisoned within the temple.

As a form of repentance she gave up the Yin Iron fragment that she had procured to the dragon's egg. In its dormant state it started to feed on the resentful energy presented to it. As it fed it grew stronger even after thousands of years have past. During this time Lan An had been studying the ancient culture who built the original temple. There he had found many things about the Western Spirits including their languages and how they and their keepers interacted with each other. And with the blood binding oath they managed to discover a lot of things about the dragons and about themselves. It was said that two who would be chosen by the dragon would represent the two halves of the Yin and Yang. One for Yin and one for Yang. Light and dark, male and female, dragon and phoenix, sun and moon, both sides representing each other. Both of them bound by their souls, soulmates." he said and everyone started muttering.

"So all the songs and stories about the dragon...are true," said Madam Jin from where she sat in her seat beside her husband. Her face showed how frightened she is.

"Yes and it is said that when they are found the dragon will be hatching soon," said the Grandmaster.

"Soon? You mean as in our lifetime soon?" said Jin Zixuan. The Grandmaster nodded solemnly his face was grave when he mentioned it.

"As the oath stated when they made it. That when the chosen ones are found then each clan must chose a member of their own bloodline to represent them. They will become the guardians of the dragon. To make sure that such a creature never knows the pains of death again. And to form their own sect within a sect," said the Grandmaster.

"You mean until it dies naturally?" said surprisingly Wen Ruohan.

"And what do you mean a sect within a sect?" asked Jin Xixun the nephew of Jin Guangshan.

"To answer your question Your Excellency, No, the Western Spirits are immortal they can't die by natural means. They can be killed like any other, but they can live for centuries. Our bloodlines are the only things that have protected the egg for as long as we have existed. So that way the dragons themselves can protect us from being overburdened with resentful energy," said the Grandmaster. Looking at Wen Ruohan and the sect leader glared as if the answer was not good enough. Then the Grandmaster turned towards Wen Chao.

"A sect within a sect is exactly as the wording states. You will each represent your own sects at the same time for an entirely new sect on your own. We already designated the sect territory centuries ago at the former site of the last battle. Yiling," he said and there was a hushed tone over everyone. Mutters began to play out over the crowds as they all started speaking to each other.

"Yiling? Are you talking about the ancient Burial Mounds? Are you insane!" said Nie Mingjue his tone harsh as his grip on his saber showed how agitated he is.

"It was decided long ago and it can't be broken. Yiling was the last location of the ancient Xue School of Demonic Cultivation. It was here that the resentful energy that came from that mountain resides. It is here that will provide the dragon cub with enough resentful energy to grow." said the Grandmaster.

"How can that be? I thought it was the cultivator's job to make sure there is no resentful energy around us?" Jiang Cheng asked curious as to why the adults are talking about something that came from stories.

"It is part of our job. But our job has been not made possible without the dragon's help," said surprisingly enough Lan Qiren who sat down beside his master. He stood up from where he sat down to walk down to the middle of the room.

"The dragon feeds on resentful energy and converts it to the life giving spiritual energy we use to cultivate ourselves. The massive amounts it consumes is what gives us the air, water and land we live on. From what I understood its fiery breath can clear away hundreds of li in seconds. Xue Chonghai wanted the secrets that this creature can give but he chose the wrong path. The weapons he forged are evil in nature, but that is no different then anything else. In fact without the dragon our world would have perished. The Yin Iron fragment that you see on the ground is dead and lifeless because the dragon egg had been feeding off of the energy that came from it. Imagine what would have happened if all the pieces were together." Lan Qiren said and the other sect leaders mumbled to themselves.

The only one who remained quiet was Wen Ruohan as he did not want to bring up why he remained so.

"Why keep us in suspense then with this story telling and tell us who has been chosen?" said Nie Mingjue growing impatient with his brother wincing beside him.

"Very well, who is missing from among you?" he asked the Lan and the Jiang clans.

"There is no one missing from our line as both my children are here," said Jiang Fengmian. But it was Lan Xichen who answered for the Lan.

"Lan Wangji is missing from our ranks due to his injuries a week or so ago," he said to him.

Lan Qiren nodded as he turned towards them, "My nephew was severely punished for a crime that he had committed in our sect and so was a male disciple from the Jiang clan." he said pointing to the Jiangs.

Hushed whispered could be said among them as they started to mutter to themselves. Then it was the Jin who answered, "Are you saying that your nephew and one of Jiang Fengmian's disciples was chosen?" he said growling.

"Yes, the healer just told me before this meeting that they are beginning to show the marks of the chosen. They already have the dreams of the colorless world or the West as most of you have known. Now the markings are starting to appear and soon they will have to take part in the soul binding ceremony." he told them and they started to mutter again among themselves.

However it was near the Jiang section that the families eyes opened and shock came to them at the realization. Mostly from both Madam Yu as her hands shook with rage. Lan Qiren noted that she was so angry that she wanted to throw something into the wall. Sighing he waited till they quieted down before taking his seat beside his master again. The older Lan gave a grateful smile to his student before addressing the crowd again.

"Now, now Lan Wangi and the boys that were with him were punished because they were caught drinking alcohol inside of the Cloud Recesses. Alcohol consumption is against the Lan Sect rules. However due to the raging river they were unable to use our cold water springs to heal. It was during this time that the chosen have been selected by the dragon to be its guardians. They and their loved ones were hand picked for their qualities. As you all know the dragon does not have much of a selection for some of the choices, but it has chosen." said the Grandmaster.

"So Lan Wangji and one of my disciples are the ones chosen to be the caretakers of the dragon?" said Jiang Fengmian. His voice sounded worried and the Lan Grandmaster nodded solemnly.

"Yes, Sect Leader Jiang I'm afraid so. The dragon had given them visions of the West, a world devoid of color. A place where the buildings are as high as mountains and the world oozes in resentful energy. It is the world where the dragons come from. When they pass into our world they take on the dragon form when they are reborn. They also have their memories and languages intact. So far we know nothing of which language the dragon speaks. But we do know right now that they have been seeing the dragon's world in their dreams. We also know that they are destined soulmates," said the Grandmaster and this earned a harsh reprimand.

"Soulmates!" said Jin Guangshan his face looking purple from the thought of it, "The chosen ones to be bound by their souls are cutsleeves!" he said his voice aggravated by the thought of them being as they are.

"Oh shut your damn mouth Lech!" shouted Nie Mingjue as he yelled from his area. "At least they are not sleeping around with everyone else's wives and whores!" he said earning hushed whispers around the room and at the slamming of Baxia's hilt they were silent once again.

"I hate to agree with Sect Leader Nie here, but your words are uncalled for Sect Leader Jin," said Wen Ruohan. His voice sounded old and grave.

"And what does his excellency have in mind to say such things to me. For agreeing with that brute over there!" said Jin Guangshan waving his fan around arrogantly. The Wen looked around with anger in their voices as both Wen Zu and Wen Chao stood ready to draw swords. But at the wave of their father's hand they both settled down.

"What? Am I not right? You reputation as an adulterous lech has shamed both yourself and your clan. Your wife is a strong woman and has given you a son. Even if she is unable to provide for your needs you should show her respect! Your concubines should have filled the need for your physical hunger. But you should have loved your wife not defile her good name by sleeping with prostitutes and other sect leaders wives, am I right?" Wen Ruohan replied which made the Jin leader growl low in his throat.

"Still at least I follow the natural order and sleep with people who have the right body parts, not sleep with someone who has a dick between his legs," he said and that earned an angry scowl from Jiang Fengmian.

"Please settle down gentlemen!" said the Grandmaster but he heard the cackling of lightning as Madam Yu pointed a finger at Jin Guangshan.

"You dare to speak of our disciple as if he was nothing more then a common dog! This person whoever he is, is from our sect! He was chosen despite being a cutsleeve! I will not stand by while you insult my clan and my sect with your filthy mouth!" Madam Yu then showed how angry she is by unleashing Zidian from it's holding. The purple sparks that came from the spiritual weapon glowed in the dim room.

"ENOUGH!" shouted Lan Qiren as he looked at Madam Yu with a stern glare. It was the same glare he gave to his students when they fall out of line. "Put your weapon away Lady Jiang! This is no place for your to unleash bloodshed!" Madam Yu relented as she sat back down she could see her friend sigh in relief.

"As was stated before the interruption. The dragon chosen two to represent its dual sides of yin and yang. Both boys will be prepared to take the dragon's trials by the next full moon," said the Grandmaster. The others looked at each other, "Why the next full moon?" asked Jiang Fengmian.

"Because that is what Lan Yi stated. She guards the temple from intruders and she protects the dragon's egg as punishment for her crimes against the Sect and against the brotherhood," said the Grandmaster.

"So besides Lan Wangji who is the Jiang Disciple who was chosen to go into the temple?" asked Madam Jin who looked just as impatient as her friend at the Jiang side of the room. Her hands were clearly shaking from the encounter with Madam Yu and her husband. Though the shaking was more rage then fear as she tried to school her features from the words her husband said.

A gentle hand rested on hers as her son Jin Zixuan tried to offer her some comfort. She rested her hand in his to show that she appreciates the support. As they had done so it was Jin Xixun who spoke once again out of turn.

"Yeah, who the fuck is the disciple who is both a cutsleeve bitch and a dragon's dog?" as he said this angry mutterings came from around the room and Lan Qiren finally stood up to answer.

"Wei Wuxian of the YunmegJiangSect," that sent an uproar from the younger generation and a hanging mouth from Jin Zixuan. His mother held his hand even tighter but he only nodded but his mouth was still in shock.

"Wei Wuxian? That shameless mother fucker is a cutsleeve!" Jin Xixun said and this time surprisingly it was Nie Huaisang who spoke up.

"Shut your filthy mouth you piece of golden shit!" and with this even Jiang Cheng who sat next to Jiang Yanli felt proud of his friend. In fact since Wei Ying came from his sect he stood up as well.

"Gee, I can't seem to get it out of my mind that you might be jealous!" he said to Jin Xixun which earned a small chuckle from Jin Zixuan. Jiang Yanli blushed when he gave Jiang Cheng a thumbs up. The Jiang heir also gave a thumbs up to him. When that was said Jin Guangshan glared at his nephew which made him silent once again. At this rate the other boy was silent. They spoke no more about it as the rest of the meeting went more or less monotonous with no more arguments.

MEANWHILE

It was rather quiet in Wei Wuxian's room. Lan Wangji was busy playing with his guqin enjoying the melody that he was trying to conjure up. Once in a while he would grow dissatisfied with a note and go back a chord to redo it. He was messing around with a brush and ink too in order to get the melody right.

"Lan Zhan you have been messing around with that song for a while. Are you going to tell me what it was about?" Wei Ying asked him and Lan Wangji turned towards him before putting the brush down figuring he needed a break.

"I am trying to make a new song," he said the scaly marks on his face grew more evident with each passing day. Wei Ying was no better with his feather patterns. He turned towards Lan Wangji in interest, "You're writing a new song?" he asked him and the other boy nodded, "Hmn!" was the reply as he tried to get through writing it.

"Does it have lyrics or a way for another instrument to come in handy?" Wei Ying asked him and Lan Wangji thought for a moment before using his hand to send a paper to him. The other boy caught it in his hand before looking at it. He thought for a minute before adding something to it and flying it back to him.

Lan Wangji caught it in his hand and looked at the score. His interest piqued when he looked at it before trying to put it to notes. As he did so he tried it on his guqin before playing it again. This time a different sound came from where Wei Ying was sitting. In his hand was the same dizi that he had taken from the healing wards. He started playing it at the same time as the guqin and both adjusted the lyrics.

"Not bad," said Wei Ying and Lan Wangji only nodded silently while adjusting a few more notes.

"Alright I saw you have some lyrics to it why not put it to notes?" Wei Ying said to him and that earned the other boy a reddening of his ears. After having spent time with the other boy Wei Ying started to realize that it was Lan Wangji's way of blushing. Laughing Wei Ying knew that the other boy was embarrassed and wanted to help. So with some fun in place he started to sing some of the lyrics Lan Wangji had written down. It was only singing the lyrics that Wei Ying finally understood what the song was.

"Lan Zhan is this a love song?" he asked the other boy and the boy's ears turned even darker shade of red. Wei Ying's eyes lit up at the sight of finally realizing some of Lan Wangji's secrets.

"Lan Zhan I didn't know you were a romantic? I thought your sect is all about purity of healing and exercising demons," Wei Ying said to him. The other boy looked away embarrassed.

"Hey don't give me that! I think it is cute that the stony Lan Wangji is such a romantic. In fact I bet whoever you marry will enjoy such songs played for them," Wei Ying said to him even though his words sounded strained. It was as if it pained him that Lan Wangji would be playing such songs to someone else. Speaking of which,

"Lan Zhan do you have someone in mind that this song is for?" Wei Ying asked and the other boy remained red in the ears but this time it spread towards his neck. Eyes lighting up Wei Ying smiled brightly at the other boy.

"Oh you are in love! Who is it?" Wei Ying asked growing excited to help out his new friend. But Lan Wangji turned away his eyes would occasionally flicker towards him. At first Wei Ying couldn't decide what Lan Wangji thought until an image of the dream they shared together came to mind. In fact ever since they started having these dreams it seems as if they both were pulled together. Something stirred in Wei Ying's heart at the sight and he then pulled the dizi to his lips and started to play a tune. It was soft and romantic in his mind. But it seemed to fit with the song. When he was done he started to sing something that he had heard from the colorless world.

Far over the Misty Mountains rise
Leave us standing upon the height
What was before

we see once more
Is our kingdom, a distant light

Fiery mountain, beneath a moon
The words unspoken, we'll be there soon
For home a song, that echoes on
And all who find us will know the tune

Some folk we never forget
Some kind we never forgive

Haven't seen the back of us yet
We'll fight as long as we live

All eyes on the hidden door
To the Lonely Mountain borne
We'll ride in the gathering storm
Until we get our long forgotten gold,"

His words seemed to struck a chord in Lan Wangji but his lyrics were a bit off in the way he said the words from the colorless world. Though he'd never heard the song before the way Wei Ying sang the lyrics didn't sound exactly right. Maybe it's because of the way he said the words since neither of them can speak the language of that world. Even the tune sounded a bit off, but Lan Wangji had to tilt his head to think for a bit. He then started to play the tune to his guqin adjusting the notes here and there.

"What are you doing?" Wei Ying asked Lan Wangji his curiosity peaked.

"Adjusting the tune, you sounded off," Lan Wangji replied as he played a few more cords. Then satisfied he then started to play the cord a bit while Wei Ying adjusted with his dizi.

"Well it sounds better now Lan Zhan. Tell me did you hear the song before?" Wei Ying asked, but Lan Wangji shook his head no. However he was good with music since it is a Lan Clan specialty.

"No," was the reply.

Just as they were about to go further into the song there was a knock at the door. Then the door opened and Wen Ning poked his head into the door. Seeing the two on their separate beds he walked in and bowed to them both.

"I, I came to check on you both since everyone else is in the conference room," he said softly.

"There is no need we are fine," said Wei Ying to Wen Ning but the other boy nodded, "Alright if you don't mind my sister wants to check up on you. She said the healers are busy dealing with a few patients in the female wing because one of them is due to give birth anytime. While the other had suffered an injury during a night hunt the day before so they asked us if we could assist in checking up on Lan Wangji and Wei Ying." he said though to use their names separately made them feel as if he was speaking to someone else.

"Sure why not," said Wei Ying and Wen Ning went outside to give the ok for his sister to come in. Wen Qing walked in and asked them to strip down to their trousers. Both boys complied knowing she was being a professional. And she also checked them before in the healer wing so they did not bother to feel embarrassed. She was extremely thorough and they felt some embarrassment when she prodded them in all areas. She even felt their meridians and their golden cores. She then reapplied salve to the still healing bruises and marks along their backs.

"I still can't believe they went overboard with your punishment. Three hundred strikes with the paddles and your spines still have not realigned themselves. Even if I were to apply any sort of chiropractic treatment it would make things worse!" Wen Qing said to them. Both boys looked down ashamed at what they had heard.

"Wei Wuxian I can see getting into trouble for his actions, but Lan Wangji what brought this about?" asked Wen Qing as she checked him for any further injuries.

"It was my fault Wen Qing. I..well I sort of put a spell on him and made him drink," Wei Ying said to her. She glared daggers at him and Lan Wangji looked a bit ashamed at having been caught off guard.

"Wei Wuxian! How dare you force someone to drink! I hope you know that Lans have that rule about drinking for a reason!" she said glaring at him.

"Yeah I do now!" Wei Ying replied to her feeling ashamed. "Sorry Lan Zhan," the other boy's eyes softened before nodding.

"I am not ashamed, would not have known Wei Ying," said Lan Wangji and his lips curled upward in a slight smile. Wei Ying looked down embarrassed at such a sight but Wen Qing scoffed as she turned to him. "Ok, so you don't regret being under his control for a second? Not even once?" she asked him with her eyebrow raised.

"Was angry then, not now," Lan Wangji replied.

"Well I guess sometimes you have to do something drastic to get someone's attention," she sighed as she turned to head towards the door only to be stopped by Wei Ying.

"Wen Qing, thanks," he said to her.

"No, problem I just hope the cold water ponds get restored soon. The healing properties of the cold springs helps with restoring your spines. I know you are getting bored with sitting in here all day," replied Wen Qing.

"I was until they put Lan Zhan in here with me," Wei Ying said to her as he gave the other boy a happy look.

"I am sure you have a lot to talk about, by the way did you finish Lan Qiren's assignments?" she asked them.

"A while ago, I am just waiting on Nie Huaisang to get his ass into gear and get his paper done so we can turn it in," Wei Ying said to her. His group had already finished their papers for their group assignment and their individual assignments. But the group required all members to turn in their work including Nie Huaisang, but the other boy would rather gossip then work.

"Oh don't worry about him his brother will insure that he finishes. I was asked to collect any finished work and to give you your new assignment by Lan Qiren," said Wen Qing who nodded to her brother to bring in the books. Wei Ying actually didn't mind these more personally assignments. In fact he found them more interesting then attending the lectures and with the grades he had been getting it was better then planned. In fact when he turned his paper over to Wen Qing she actually took the time to read through them.

The differences in Spiritual and Resentful Energies by Wei Wuxian she read the title and started to read through the paper. As she read her eyes lit up at the amount of writing that Wei Ying did and how much of an argument that he presented with his curiosity. Wen Qing then nodded and folded the paper before getting Lan Wangji's papers and read through them. Satisfied she folded them before placing them into her robes.

"Now that my assignment is done I will take my leave I have other patients to care for till the healers are free. Come on A-Ning, we have to check on Lan Yuling she has had that sore throat for sometime and I am worried about those spots," she said to her brother and both of them left the two boys alone.

"So where were we?" Wei Ying asked Lan Wangji and the other boy pointed to the books, "Homework first then music," he said and Wei Ying groaned.

ELDER MEETING BUILDING

"That is just ridiculous!" Shouted Jin Guangshan as he pointed to the piece of Yin Iron on the ground.

"You said that piece of rock is dangerous! Yet you touched it earlier with your bare hands. Then you claim that I no longer has the power to do anything! So tell me we've all seen the dragon egg when do we see it again?" asked Jin Guangshan.

The other sect leaders looked at him as if he had grown two heads. It was Jiang Fengmian who spoke up, "Sect Leader Jin do you remember when you first gazed upon the egg when you became sect leader?" he asked him.

"That was a long time ago Fengmian! I bet it looks the same as it did before. A giant over sized pearl! I got to touch it with my bare hands you know," he bragged and the other sect leaders didn't believe him, not one bit.

"I call your bullshit!" said Nie Mingjue as he glared at him, "You know as well as I do that whoever touches the egg gets burned!" he said pointing to the Grandmaster's hand.

"I agree with Chifeng-zun the egg is too powerful to touch. One would burn if they touched it," said Jiang Fengmian. He was followed by Wen Ruohan who also agreed.

"Yes, if you want to see the egg that badly I dare you to face the dragon trials alone and be burned by the egg at the end," Ruohan said to him. His eyes daring him to speak his mind and the Jin Sect leader glared at him.

"You would dare say that to me? After all your people try constantly to invade my lands and Qinghe lands as well!" he said shouting into the room. It was only when the hand of the Lan Sect Leader finally landed on the table in front of him. Many eyes turned towards the bearded man who sat with the Lan elders. He was silent in his approach so no one noticed him. It was when they finally looked at the worn Lan robes of pale blue and white and the elongated nails that they realized that they are looking at the famous, Qingheng-Jun the secluded leader of the Lan Sect.

He stood firmly on his seat though his posture has long since wilted after years in solitude. But he carried himself like the sect leader he should have been. But many people there watched as he glared at both his own Grandmaster and Jiang Fengmian before speaking with such disdain towards Jin Guangshan.

"You dare to speak of such nonsense here! This hall is dedicated to those of our brotherhood. Forged by blood thousands of years ago and yet you come here with your petty grievances Jin Guangshan!" Qingheng-Jun said to him. The other man looked ready to retort, but the Lan Sect leader was not done with him.

"If you have forgotten why we are here then let me remind you. Grandmaster open the door and let them through I think they need a reminder of why the egg is important," he said and stood up. The Grandmaster and Lan Qiren followed and the Elders of the Lan Sect followed behind him.

WEI WUXIAN'S DORM ROOM

"Ok I think I managed to figure out this assignment," said Wei Ying looking at the paper in front of him. The assignment that he and Lan Wangji were given was to write a paper on the golden core, and the use of spiritual energy on the human body in order to achieve immortality. Now Wei Ying knew that he was getting more interesting assignments but nothing this complicated. He had spent several hours going through each one while stopping to eat or ask for someone to help him use the facilities.

It had been sometime since Wen Qing and Wen Ning had come to check up on them. And so Wen Ning having nothing else to do decided to join them. He was doing his own assignment from the younger classes. He was currently studying medicine like his sister and hopes to take over the family practice if anything should happen to her. So his assignment was to determine the best mixtures for stomach medicines.

"Ok," Lan Wangji said to him.

"Ok, so the golden core as we all know is used to cultivate our spiritual energy when we develop it. It helps channel it faster but what if one were to lose it? For example Wen Ning didn't you guys have a guy who can melt golden cores?" asked Wei Ying looking to the younger boy.

"Yeah, Wen Zuliu, he is really nice but cousin Chao makes him do bad things. If he wasn't indebted to our sect then he would have been a rogue cultivator or dead," said Wen Ning sheepishly.

"Wait the guy is rather nice? But he hangs with Wen Chao?" said Wei Ying looking up from his paper.

"Yeah he is, but he was forced to serve my spoiled cousin by his father. Personally I much rather he serve Wen Xu who is a much better choice then his father or his brother. At least Wen Xu cares about his people," said Wen Ning.

Lan Wangji was quiet when he heard this, taking interest in the conversation. His face remained impassive, but his head tilted to the side as if listening. But as he listened his face remained neutral as he was thinking many things at once. He remembered meeting the sect heir once when they were at a conference a few years back in Nightless City. The elder Wen heir had an interest in musical cultivation and the arts. He wanted to clean up some of the cities and build schools for the homeless children in Qishan. But his father cut that down quick preferring to the more fearful tactics of gaining loyalty.

Ever since then Lan Wangji had not seen him, but he saw more of his brother Wen Chao. He was a young man that Lan Wangji could not stand. The boy even though he was three years older then him was spoiled rotten and would throw tantrums at others. The worse was when he burned the face of his own guards recently when they entered the Cloud Recesses. Something that Wen Xu would never do.

"I agree," said Lan Wangji for the first time and that caused the other two boys to quiet down.

"Agree with what Lan Zhan?" asked Wei Ying.

"That Wen Xu would make a better leader then his father. He lacks cruelty which is good. But I have been hearing a lot of bad things recently," Lan Wangji said to the other two boys and Wen Ning looked down. Wei Ying met his eyes and remembered the puppets they saw that night that he was caught sneaking in.

"I don't know much for my sister won't tell me. She said it is best I don't know," replied Wen Ning sadly. Wei Ying looked at the younger boy with some sort of pity. A sigh was heard as Lan Wangji put his papers to the side. He then brought out his guqin again and started to play. It was the song they were practicing earlier.

Wen Ning raised his head up at the sound of it, "What sort of song is that?" he asked Lan Wangji.

"Wei Ying found it in the colorless world. When we both dreamed it he heard it somewhere," he said looking at Wei Ying. The boy shrugged, "An old man was playing it in front of a creepy healer building," Wei Ying replied.

"Whoa, c...can I p...play along w..w...with y...y..you guys?" he asked stuttering with embarrassment, "I mean I've been practicing ever since we left the healer wing that day. Sister thinks I might be a bit stupid or that well no offense, but you Lans got to me. B...ut I wanted to try to increase my healing abilities," Wen Ning replied. Both boys were stunned as he pulled out his Ruan.

"I keep it hidden from sis and practice it along with my archery. It helped with my stuttering see," he pointed to himself, "No, stutter Lan Xichen said it helps with focus," he said happily. The boys looked at each other as if he had lost it.

"Ok Wen Ning, but I was actually going to play a song that neither of us understand. It was written in another language can you help us with it?" asked Wei Ying presenting what they wrote to him. Wen Ning looked at it and the notes.

"Ok, how about you play and I try to come in," he said and Lan Wangji played the song and Wen Ning tried to see if he can get the notes right. It took a bit but he was able to do so. When they were done he looked a bit exhausted.

"You look like you are ready for bed, are you sure you are alright?" asked Wei Ying. The boy nodded a bit before he got up and bowed to them.

"It is a complicated song. Hopefully I can help master it for you. Maybe try to get my sister to help since she is studying here. But that would be up to uncle," he said sadly. Wei Ying took the talisman off the door and allowed him to leave quietly. Both boys let him go before they both felt the need to rest.

When he left Lan Wangji returned to his work and sadly so did Wei Ying. He sighed as he set to work on another book to read for his report. But when he opened the pages something caught his eye. It was a drawing of a dragon but not like those of normal dragons. In fact it looks rather familiar.

"Hey Lan Zhan this dragon picture looks rather familiar do you recognize it?" Wei Ying asked as he held up the book. Lan Wangji looked at it confused until he saw the image and his eyes seemed to recognize it.

"It looks like the statue in the library," he said.

"Statue? What statue? I was thinking of something I saw in the dream. On one of the moving walls. It was flying as if it was real but there is some things that are not the same," he said looking at the creature. There were differences but the creature looked similar. For starters the painting depicted a creature that wound its way through the clouds absorbing resentful energy. Another showed of a war and death.

"What is the myth behind it?" said Lan Wangji. His head was tilted as if studying the drawing.

"Well it says here that it is known as the Western Spirit. A creature that is said to have been driven to extinction by Xue Chonghai's school of cultivation. Um let's see what it says.

'The Western Spirit is a dragon that consumes resentful energy and exchange it into spiritual energy. Known as Yang energy when released this creature was said to be responsible for the preservation of our world. Worshiped as a spirit of good fortune and luck. Many territories in the world have celebrated the day the dragon is said to be seen with the annual Dragon Festival. Here people can make offerings to the dragon in exchange for good luck in growing crops and a peaceful year. Though this myth is well over three thousand years old many stories have been told of the Western Spirit.'

Wei Ying paused to take a breath and to sip at some tea he had on the side. Lan Wangji looked at a copy of the book that Wei Ying had and flipped through till he found the right page.

"On the eve of the Winter's solace a farmer was on his way to Lotus Pier from Yiling. He was a farmer offering to trade some of his crop for some lotus seeds. When he gotten to Yunmeng he was attacked by a Yao. It was a boar Yao. The man was badly wounded and on the verge of dying. As he laid there he was found by a young man who was passing by on the road. The man was with his wife and child and took pity on him and took the farmer to their home. As they nursed him to health the farmer found out that the man's wife was an adept healer. She was highly skilled in the healing arts and thus was able to save his life.

The man who did not reveal his name to the farmer, but he had told the farmer that the Yao had been attacking people along that road for quite sometime. He was just the latest victim in a series of attacks. They had asked the rangers of Lotus Pier to assist in getting rid of the Yao. But the creature had escaped every time they go searching for it. The rangers then tracked the creature to its layer near the village of Loudianzhen which is about a day's journey from Lotus Pier. When the Rangers gotten there they were nearly slaughtered by the boar as it was a massive creature.

One brave ranger managed to hold it off long enough for the others to escape to get reinforcements. But his sacrifice was in vain for the boar managed to kill them all and devour their flesh before help arrived. So it was with a heavy heart that the rangers had tried their best and had asked for help from other schools, but there was no help to give. It was only those who managed to keep their farms safe by placing talismans from the rangers that the boar left them alone.

The farmer was saddened to know that such a thing roamed the lands for sometime. He wanted to return the kindness that the man and his wife had given him. He even played with their child a young girl of three. When the farmer healed enough to return home he wanted to first pay a visit to a local shrine to offer prayers to the family. So instead of returning to Yiling he went further towards Yunmeng and to Lotus Pier. When he gotten to the village before the ranger's headquarters he went to search for a charm or anything that would bring the family good fortune. It was when he spotted a dog being beaten by a group of rowdy men that the farmer knew what he can give them.

Chasing the men off he approached the dog that was left to die on the ground. The poor thing had a coat as white as snow with red markings across its face and body. The farmer had carefully taken it back to the family who helped him, and remained to help nurse it back to health. The dog forever grateful for the help remained near the house protecting the family from harm.

Then one night while the family was asleep the boar came onto the farm. It was following the scent of the three year old child that was nestled safely in his parents embrace. However the farmer and the dog were wide awake. The farmer had been awoken by the dog's growling. The animal had sensed the boar and put itself in front of the family wanting to protect them from the boar.

It was when the dog did this that the man and his wife were woken to the sound of the dogs barking. When they rose they saw the eye of the boar looking in at them from outside the farm. The eye was red as blood and glowing despite the darkness. Its massive size would destroy their house with a single move of its huge head. It then disappeared from the window and the man, his wife and child and the farmer watched in horror as the boar moved away just out of sight.

Just then the boar was heard charging towards their window. Its hooves pounded the earth like a large drum shaking it with each step of its gigantic feet. The family huddled together wanting nothing but for the safety of their loved one. The Farmer held up the only weapon he could grab which was a large digging stick.

Suddenly a flash of white alerted them that the dog was still there. It leaped out of the window charged right at the boar. When it landed on the ground it was no longer a dog but a fierce dragon.

The dragon put itself in front of the boar and attacked it. To their surprise the fighting between the boar and the dragon lasted for hours as neither wanted to give up. Then when the boar was about to go again the dragon breathed fire and burned the boar. The boar screamed in agony as it was burned to ash. The dragon then opened its maw and consumed the boar tearing out its burned flesh and eating its rotten insides. When it was done there was nothing left as it flew away into the night sky. Leaving behind nothing but the strong winds from its wings. The man and his wife were forever grateful and so they and the farmer made a shrine dedicated to the dragon. For they made offerings of thanks to their ancestors. As time past their fields became the most fertile in the entire land and the man became wealthy. He even traded his lotus seed crops with the farmer who stayed with them for a time. As for the farmer he went back to Yiling to spread the word of what just happened. How the white dog who he had rescued became a dragon to protect his new masters. That is why Yiling has a statue dedicated to the dog who had protected the farmer and his friends. And why there are so many stray dogs in Yiling,'

"That would explain why I kept getting attacked by dogs," Wei Ying said to him and Lan Wangji looked at him strangely. Wei Ying gulped when he met those golden eyes but he sighed pulled up his leg revealing his scars. Lan Wangji was shocked to see such scars. They were vicious and horrible to look at. Bite marks were everywhere where the dogs had bitten him.

"Wei Ying," he said to him softly but the boy smiled back. His storm colored eyes were full of sadness, but at the same time he was smiling. Though his smile was false.

"I was very young when my parents died. Uncle Jiang told me that they died during a night hunt. I remember being kept in my room at an inn in Yiling. The old man told me the story of the dogs that hunted at night. When my parents failed to return for me several days later the inn keeper had no choice but to kick me out into the streets. I became a victim of the dogs then as in the story of the dog and the dragon. But no dragon came for me. The dogs were the boars of the story. That is why I am afraid of them," Wei Ying admitted to Lan Wangji. The other boy looked at him with tears coming from his eyes. If he could walk he would have gone over there to comfort Wei Ying. Instead he sighed and started to play a song on his guqin. It was a soft melody one that he had composed a few years back.

Wei Ying was surprised by the soft melody that was played. It was soothing to his ears as he looked at Lan Wangji with eyes that he can't see any other time. It was as if he was looking at him with longing. Lan Wangji felt the same as if a pull was there a yearning. They stared at each other for sometime not even moving. Lan Wangji's fingers moved on their own. The tune started to change as he did so.

Then just as strange Wei Ying reached for the dizi that was left to the side of his bed and started to play the same tune. They stared at each other as they played their eyes not leaving each other for one bit.

MEANWHILE

Jiang Cheng felt uncomfortable and afraid as they walked down the long passageway into the deep dark caves behind Cloud Recesses. The sounds of the running water made his nerves stand on end and his hand clutched Sandou in anticipation for anything. The torches gave an eerie glow that allows them to see, but at the same time it makes him want to run far enough away that he doesn't want to cultivate anymore. The shadows that the light brought made him hold onto Sandou even more. He felt out of place as the shadows played around in the torch light.

"We are nearing the entrance to the temple," said the Lan Grandmaster.

Jiang Cheng felt Jiang Yanli's hand in his seeking comfort and he squeezed his hand in hers. Silently showing her that he is just as scared as her. In front of the siblings were their parents both Madam Yu and Jiang Fengmian. For once is mother was silent and her two body guards were not present with her as they are forbidden from entering. He could see Zidian crackling in her hand, but it did not form into the weapon it truly was. His father was ever so calm since he has been here before.

Jiang Cheng had never understood it till his father told him.

"I had been here before when I first became sect leader A-Cheng. You will come here too when your time comes to take your place beside the egg. The dragon is a sacred creature and our family has helped guard it for centuries. As a sect leader you will know when the time comes that the dragon returns." his father told him.

Jiang Cheng thought otherwise. For unlike his father he was not a believer in fairy tales. He was a believer in reality and if the dragon truly has the power to cleanse the world of the resentful energy that still resides after three thousand years then he would believe. But he does not believe that it would come peacefully. There will be war and violence that much he knows.

"We are here," said the Lan Grandmaster.

All Jiang Cheng could do was stare in awe at the entrance to the temple of the Dragon.

OH Yeah the song was from the Hobbit.

Ok, just remember to review and no BASHINGS, FLAMES OR LORE MONGERS PLEASE!
