A/N: This one was so much fun to add stuff to! Also, again thanks to Visser2315 for providing inspiration through their L&D version of Midnight Sun; it helped a lot with this one.
Note 1: Cursing from Quil
Note 2: DAYDREAM means exactly what you think it does, a daydream
Song of the Episode: Warriors by Imagine Dragons
EXT. FORKS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY [ESTABLISHING]
The red brick building sits in the midst of trees. Cheap and scratched cars sit in the parking lot. The silver Volvo is one of the cars in the lot.
INT. EDYTHE'S VOLVO
EDYTHE CULLEN sits in her car, her eyes closed. She wears a Dion & The Belmonts concert t-shirt. Edythe's window is open.
EDYTHE (V.O.)
Physical attraction. Or - what was that word McKayla had used? "Into"? Was he into me? I didn't know. For one moment, I had felt almost certain of it, but now I wasn't so sure. There were times when he was around me his heart rate seemed to speed up, or his face went blank the way Mr. Cope's had. But those physical signs could just as easily be caused by fear or shock as attraction. Consequently, a comparison to Mr. Cope or Jeremy was inconclusive. It was hard to imagine Beau having the kind of fantasies about me Jeremy used to have - he knew I wasn't normal, and based on what he had said, seemed to suspect that I wasn't even human. When I had touched his hand that time in the Biology room, he had felt how cold it was, and he had immediately jerked away. And when I had helped him to the infirmary just today, he must have felt the icy chill of my body, how hard, how inhuman it was. No, I couldn't imagine him having any kind of fantasies like those. Thinking about Jeremy brought back a few of his most-often reoccurring daydreams. There were definitely times a photographic memory was anything but a blessing. Even some of the more harmless, less graphic thoughts made me shudder with distaste.
INT. BEAU'S ROOM
DAYDREAM:
Edythe and BEAU SWAN stand in Beau's room. Beau has his arms around Edythe's waist. He traces her bottom lip with his thumb, then leans in and kisses her thoroughly. Edythe complies warmly. Beau hitches Edythe's leg up to his hip and pulls her hips toward him.
INT. EDYTHE'S VOLVO
Edythe flinches, breaking the daydream.
EDYTHE (V.O.)
What exactly was I doing? Did I really want him to be attracted to me - attracted to me, when I couldn't even get close to him? When I could give him nothing? I would drive him to madness.
The bell RINGS faintly. Edythe doesn't notice.
EDYTHE (V.O.; CONT'D)
What I was doing was so wrong. Unforgivable. I should have died back in 1918, rather than exist now to do nothing but torment a perfectly good boy. He deserved to have a normal life, with a normal girl. To enjoy all the things a human life had to offer. I hated that I wasn't human - when, at this moment, I didn't think I had ever felt more human in my life.
ELEANOR CULLEN opens the door, startling Edythe.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Wow. Never caught you by surprise before, this must be a first.
Eleanor slides in, closing the door behind her.
ELEANOR
You know, I can't read minds, but you've been so erratic lately I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Goff thinks you're on diet pills. Where were you today?
EDYTHE
Nowhere. I was just...doing good deeds.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Huh?
EDYTHE
Caring for the sick, that kind of thing.
Eleanor inhales, catching a scent.
ELEANOR
Oh. That boy again? You actually had him in the car? Wasn't that tough on you? Or are you over it, now that you're so in love with him and all? This is getting weird.
EDYTHE
Tell me about it.
ELEANOR
Huh. I sort of see the appeal. Interesting flavor, isn't it?
Edythe SNARLS.
ELEANOR (CONT'D)
Yo girl, easy there. Calm down, I was just saying. It was a compliment.
ROYAL HALE and JESSAMINE HALE enter the car. ARCHIE CULLEN goes to Edythe's open window and holds his hand out. Edythe drops a pair of car keys into it.
ARCHIE
I only saw that I was. You'll have to tell us the whole story later.
EDYTHE
This doesn't mean -
ARCHIE
I know, don't blow a gasket. It'll be soon, trust me.
Edythe sighs.
EXT. CHARLIE'S HOUSE - DAY [ESTABLISHING]
The house sits silent. Neither Beau's truck or the cruiser sit in front.
INT. BEAU'S BEDROOM
Beau sits on his bed, reading Macbeth, and constantly looking out the window, looking for his truck. He looks out one last time, and it's suddenly there.
EXT. CULLEN MANOR - DAY [ESTABLISHING]
The house sits silent in the trees.
INT. LIVING ROOM
A pale couch is pushed up against the wall, a large flatscreen TV across from it. Two pale chairs sit next to the couch. In the center is a coffee table. Two small tables sit on either side of the couch. A piano is in one corner, the lid above the keys up. No sheets of music sit in the stand. The back wall is completely glass, and a small control panel sits on the wall beside it. EARNEST CULLEN sits on the couch, large blueprints rolled out on the coffee table in front of him. He makes small adjustments with a pencil. Eleanor and Jessamine sit on the ground by the piano, several joined chess boards set out between them. They stare at each other intently. Archie sits in one of the chairs, fiddling with the coding on a video game. Royal lounges next to Earnest on the couch, flipping through TV channels quickly. Edythe stands in the doorway, observing them all. Jessamine moves a chess piece. As Eleanor deliberates her next move, Archie turns around and mouths Eleanor's next moves to Jessamine. Eleanor does not notice. Edythe smiles and sighs. She goes to sit at the piano and tests the pitch, which is perfect. She plays a short string of notes. Edythe smiles. Earnest looks up. Edythe continues to fiddle with the notes, adding more on.
EARNEST (V.O.)
She's playing again. And a new song. How long has it been?
ROYAL (V.O.)
(disgusted)
Edythe is composing again?
Edythe abruptly stops playing and laughs sharply, covering her mouth with her hand. Royal glares at Edythe. Earnest glances between Edythe and Royal, curious. Eleanor and Jessamine look up from their game. Archie does not flinch.
EARNEST
Don't stop, Edythe.
Edythe continues playing. Royal stands up and walks quickly out the front door.
ROYAL (V.O.)
If you say anything, I will hunt you like a dog.
ELEANOR
What's wrong, Roy?
(to Edythe)
What was that about?
EDYTHE
Who knows?
EARNEST
Keep playing, Edythe.
Edythe continues playing. Earnest stands and walks over to Edythe. Earnest places his hands on Edythe's shoulders.
EARNEST
Very lovely. Have you chosen a name?
EDYTHE
Not yet.
EARNEST
Is there a story to it?
EDYTHE
I think... I think it's a lullaby.
EARNEST
I see. That's wonderful, Edythe.
Archie puts the tablet on the table, stands, walks over to the piano, and sits on the bench next to Edythe. As Edythe plays, Archie SINGS along.
EDYTHE
I like it. But how about this?
Edythe adds a new line to the song.
EDYTHE (CONT'D)
Yes. Perfect.
Earnest squeezes Edythe's shoulder. Edythe continues playing. As the song ends, Edythe bows her head over the keys. Earnest strokes Edythe's hair.
EARNEST (V.O.)
It's going to be fine, Edythe. This is going to work out for the best. You deserve happiness, my daughter. Fate owes you that.
EDYTHE
Thanks.
EARNEST (V.O.)
Love doesn't always come in convenient packages. You, out of everyone on this planet, are perhaps the best equipped to deal with such a difficult quandary. You are the best and brightest of us all. He'll have to love you back. If he's a bright boy. But I can't imagine anyone being so slow they wouldn't see the catch you are.
EDYTHE
Stop it, Dad, you're making me blush.
Archie laughs, then sighs.
ARCHIE
So I wish you'd tell me what you were laughing at Roy about. But I can see that you won't.
EDYTHE
Nope.
Archie flicks Edythe's ear.
EARNEST
Be nice, Archie. Edythe is being polite.
ARCHIE
(whiney)
But I want to know.
Earnest kisses the top of Edythe's head, then pushes Archie's head away. Archie and Edythe laugh. Archie swats his hand at Earnest.
ARCHIE (CONT'D)
Hey. Let's do requests. I pick "Chopsticks."
Edythe laughs then plays "Chopsticks."
JESSAMINE
Play "Heart and Soul."
ARCHIE
(to Edythe)
I'm doing the easy part.
EDYTHE
Okay.
Edythe and Archie play "Heart and Soul." After they're finished, Archie's face goes blank for a second.
ARCHIE
Oh, hey. Guess what, Jess?
Edythe freezes.
JESSAMINE
What?
ARCHIE
Patricia and Charles are stopping by for a visit next week. That'll be something, won't it?
EARNEST
Something wrong, Edythe?
EDYTHE
They're...coming to Forks?
ARCHIE
Calm down, Edy. It's not their first visit. They never hunt here. You know that.
EDYTHE
When?
ARCHIE (V.O.)
Monday morning. Not like it matters. You're freaking out over nothing.
EDYTHE
Eleanor?
ELEANOR
Yeah?
EDYTHE
You ready to go?
ELEANOR
I thought we were leaving tomorrow morning. Didn't you just eat last night?
EDYTHE
Change of plans. We're coming back by midnight Sunday. So we should probably leave a little bit early.
ELEANOR
Fine by me. I'll tell Roy.
EDYTHE
Sure.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
You really have lost it, Edythe.
EDYTHE
I suppose I have.
Eleanor turns to walk out of the door, then turns around.
ELEANOR
Hey. Since we'll be getting back before Patricia and Charles get here, you should come too, Jess. The more the merrier. Your eyes are getting a bit dark, and you don't want to be distracted while they're visiting.
JESSAMINE
Archie and I went hunting not that long ago.
ELEANOR
Come on. You know Edythe is going to try to bolt halfway through, I need someone who can help hold her.
EDYTHE
You better not come, Jess. There are only so many mountain lions and bears to go around.
ELEANOR
See, there. She is going to try to ditch out. So she can get back and stalk that kid some more.
JESSAMINE
Let me just change then.
Jessamine runs up the stairs [human speed]. Eleanor walks out the door.
EARNEST
Play the new song one more time, would you, Edythe?
EDYTHE
Sure.
Edythe pulls the lemonade bottle cap out of her pocket and places it on the music stand. Earnest and Archie exchange a confused look. Edythe begins playing.
EXT. FORKS HIGH SCHOOL - DAY [ESTABLISHING]
The school is a large, red, brick building. Trees, bushes, and other foliage surround it on all sides. A large parking lot sits in front.
INT. TRIGONOMETRY CLASSROOM
Desks crowd the room, STUDENTS sitting at them. Posters line the walls, and MS. VARNER stands at the front of the classroom in front of the whiteboard. Beau and JEREMY STANLEY are sitting in their Trigonometry class.
JEREMY
What did Edythe Cullen want yesterday?
BEAU
Not sure.
JEREMY
She looked kind of mad.
BEAU
Did she?
JEREMY
I've never seen her sit with anyone but her family before. That was weird.
BEAU
Yeah, weird.
INT. HALLWAY
STUDENTS crowd the hall. As Beau walks out of the lunchroom behind MCKAYLA NEWTON and LOGAN MALLORY.
LOGAN
(malicious)
I don't know why Beaufort doesn't just sit with the Cullens from now on.
MCKAYLA
(territorial)
He's my friend; he sits with us.
Beau stops walking to let Jeremy and ALLEN WEBER pass him.
EXT. CHARLIE'S HOUSE - NIGHT [ESTABLISHING]
The house sits silent, Beau's truck sitting on the curb and the cruiser in the driveway.
INT. KITCHEN
CHARLIE SWAN and Beau are eating dinner.
BEAU
Dad, do you know a place called Goat Rocks or something like that? I think it's south of Mount Rainier.
CHARLIE
Yeah, why?
BEAU
Some kids were talking about camping there.
CHARLIE
It's not a very good place for camping. Too many bears. Most people go there during the hunting season.
BEAU
Huh. Maybe I got it wrong.
EXT. GOAT ROCKS WILDERNESS - DAY
Eleanor stands in the midst of trees, a large bear in front of her. Jessamine sits on a nearby rock. Edythe walks up behind her, her white t-shirt completely clean.
EDYTHE
Someone should really tell her not to play with her food.
Edythe sits on the ground in front of Jessamine.
EDYTHE (CONT'D)
Did you get all you wanted?
JESSAMINE
I found a black bear earlier. It was small. I may try to find one more later, but this is entertaining.
Edythe shakes her head.
EDYTHE
And here, I thought you were my better-mannered sister. Southern politeness and all that.
JESSAMINE
You've always been the well-mannered one, Edythe, you know that. You take after Carine that way.
EDYTHE
Guess so. Jess...can I ask you something?
JESSAMINE
Yes?
EDYTHE
This thing I have... This...particular attraction to his blood. Have you ever experienced anything like that? We know Eleanor has. She thinks it's happened twice, though neither was as strong as this has been for me.
JESSAMINE
No. I can't recall any human's blood having a particular draw for me. Human blood is human blood.
EDYTHE
Carine's never experienced it either. I wonder what causes it. It must be fairly rare.
The bear BELLOWS. Eleanor ROARS back at the bear. Edythe laughs and sits on the rock. The bear ROARS yet again, but the sound gurgles off as Eleanor sinks her teeth into the bear's flesh. Jessamine stands.
JESSAMINE
I think I'll go look for that other bear now.
Eleanor walks over to Edythe and sits down next to her. Her shirt is torn and bloodied. Eleanor's hair is sticky with sap and covered in fur.
ELEANOR
Well, that was fun. Beast got my shirt though. And this was one of my favorite shirts, too. Roy got it for me.
EDYTHE
Tragic.
ELEANOR
You have to have a bit of fun sometimes. Live a little. Look at you. Did you ever find that mountain lion you were after?
EDYTHE
Yes. I was just a bit more careful about it.
ELEANOR
Where'd Jess get off to? Normally she's done before I am.
EDYTHE
She found one small bear, but she was so intrigued by your unique hunting method she stopped to watch you.
ELEANOR
I'm probably more interesting than watching you hunt anyway.
EDYTHE
I go for efficiency over entertainment value.
Eleanor glances at Edythe, grins, and moves to shove Edythe off the rock. Edythe dodges.
ELEANOR
Come on, Edythe, just turn it off for a little while. Let's have a fair fight for once.
Eleanor shifts into a crouch, coiling her muscles as though to spring. Edythe rolls her eyes.
EDYTHE
You know it doesn't turn off, El. Believe me, if there was a way, I would have found it by now.
Eleanor sighs and slumps back against the rock, resting her head on her arms.
ELEANOR
You know, I wonder exactly what that kid does to keep you out. Maybe it's something he could teach me.
EDYTHE
Stay away from him!
ELEANOR
Touchy, touchy. Relax, I was joking. I'm not trying to be insensitive or anything. I know none of this can be easy for you. But after years of nonstop teasing and trying to push all your buttons, some old habits die hard.
Beat.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
So serious.
EDYTHE
Sorry. I'm just thinking about...things. Him. Worrying, I guess.
ELEANOR
What's there to worry about? You are here.
Edythe folds her arms.
ELEANOR (CONT'D)
You know, you're going to be spending a lot of time waiting for apologies if you get offended by everything I say. I just say whatever I think. That's just how I am, and it's not changing anytime soon.
EDYTHE
No one knows that better than I do. I guess I can't stop thinking about how fragile humans are. They could get hit by a car...struck by lightning...fall down the stairs...get sick - get a disease. Fires, earthquakes, tornadoes. Bears.
ELEANOR
You know you're starting to sound kind of crazed, right? Like, psychotically paranoid. I mean, lightning? Seriously? What are the chances of that?
EDYTHE
What are the chances he would end up in a town of vampires? In a class with a vampire who about goes into a frenzy at the smell of his blood?
ELEANOR
Yeah, but we're vegetarians, plus you have more self-control than just about any of us besides Carine. If that had been me sitting in that class, he would have been a goner. So if you look at it in a certain way, the way things happened have been kind of good luck for him.
EDYTHE
And the van? Was that good luck? I swear, the world is out to get him - that's the only explanation.
ELEANOR
Well. It was good luck you were there to save him. Right?
EDYTHE
And the worst luck of all. Having a vampire fall in love with him. (beat) No.
ELEANOR
I really don't see why you're making this into such a dilemma. It would solve everything. You wouldn't have to worry about him getting struck by lightning. And half of you wouldn't be wanting to kill him anymore.
EDYTHE
Destroy his life? Take away everything he's ever known?
ELEANOR
I didn't mind so much, did I?
EDYTHE
You were going to die anyway. It's not the same thing. Taking it away from him when there's another choice... You should know as well as anyone not everyone finds this life to their liking. (beat) No, El, I can't touch him - not the way you mean.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
Not so long as he's human. And...fragile. If you can't touch him, and he can't touch you...how can you be happy? How can you make him happy? No matter how strong your love is, won't it always feel incomplete?
EDYTHE
For myself... In the end, it doesn't matter. I would give up anything for him, for his well-being. I would make any sacrifice. For him... You're right. It isn't fair. That's why I need to leave, before it's too late. I know that. But...I just can't bring myself to do it.
ELEANOR
Trying to be noble and selfless kind of sucks, doesn't it?
EDYTHE
It certainly does.
ELEANOR
What?
EDYTHE
I kind of want to go back now.
ELEANOR
Oh, I knew it! I knew this would happen. Well, not happening, sister.
Eleanor seizes Edythe by the arm, and pulls her into a headlock.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
You are not skipping out and going back early. At least give Roy a chance to cool his head or he'll be sulking all next week.
EDYTHE
I guess...I'll try to stay.
ELEANOR
Archie will call if anything's up. He's probably keeping an eye on him, what with all that best friend nonsense. By the way, are you going to tell me what Roy was thinking that got him all worked up?
EDYTHE
I really don't have the faintest idea.
ELEANOR
You are such a liar. But you're right - if you told me, he'd probably be sulking for a decade. Not to mention you'd have to watch your back, because he might just try to rip your head off. You might as well relax, you know. Archie said it's going to be sunny this week, so we aren't even going back to school until Wednesday.
EDYTHE
Sunday night.
ELEANOR
Patricia and Charles are good guys. The last thing they'll want is to start a fight. They aren't going to touch anyone in Forks, let alone some favorite of yours.
EDYTHE
Not intentionally. But self-control isn't one of Patricia's strong points. If he wandered off into the woods at the wrong moment...
ELEANOR
Or maybe he'll accidentally choke on his toothbrush when he's brushing his teeth in the morning. Or he'll trip over his own shoelaces and hit his head on a doorknob. Yeah, you're right - anything could happen. I'm just trying to point out how ridiculous your obsessive paranoia is.
EDYTHE
Well, you're only reinforcing it.
Eleanor laughs.
ELEANOR (V.O.)
I hate to say it, but I'm really starting to think it might be better if you were institutionalized. Seriously, Edythe. You're starting to scare me.
EXT. OLYMPIC OUTFITTERS - DAY
Beau walks up to McKayla, TAYLOR CROWLEY, ERICA YORKIE, BECCA CHENEY, Jeremy, Allen, Logan, BOY 2, BOY 3, and BOY 4, who are all standing in front of McKayla and Taylor's cars. Boy 2 gives Beau a dirty look and whispers something to Logan. He, Boy 3, and Boy 4 all laugh to each other. McKayla runs up to Beau.
MCKAYLA
You came! And I said it would be sunny, didn't I?
BEAU
I told you I was coming.
MCKAYLA
We're just waiting for Leann and Sean...unless you invited someone.
BEAU
Nope, it's just me.
MCKAYLA
Do you want to ride with me? It's either that or Leann's mom's minivan.
BEAU
Sure.
MCKAYLA
You can have shotgun.
McKayla and Beau sit in the front seats of McKayla's car, McKayla driving. Jeremy is crammed between Beau, who's in the passenger seat, and McKayla.
EXT. FIRST BEACH, LA PUSH, WA - DAY
An unlit bonfire sits in the middle of a circle of driftwood benches. Beau, McKayla, Allen, Jeremy, Logan, Taylor, Boy 2, Boy 3, Boy 4, Becca, Erica, LEANN STEPHENS, and SEAN walk down to the beach, talking to one another. Taylor holds a Bluetooth stereo. Erica CHEERS.
ERICA
La Push, baby!
Beau sits on one of the driftwood bench. All others do, too.
MCKAYLA
Have you ever seen a driftwood fire?
McKayla lights a small stick aflame and places it on the bonfire.
BEAU
No.
MCKAYLA
You'll like this then - watch the colors.
McKayla lights another branch. The fire lights; blue.
BEAU
It's blue.
MCKAYLA
The salt does it. Cool, isn't it?
Jeremy and McKayla begin talking as Beau simply watches the blue-green flame. Some QUILEUTE TEENAGERS enter, including QUILLA ATEARA V [Quil], JULIE BLACK, and SAMANTHA ULEY [Sam]. Sam's hair has been cut into a pixie-cut. Julie notices Beau. Jeremy, Quil, McKayla, Allen, Becca, Erica, Sean, Leann, Boy 2, Boy 3, and Boy 4 leave to hike. Logan and Taylor are messing with the speaker. Beau is now alone on the bench. Julie saunters over to Beau and sits next to him.
JULIE
You're Beaufort Swan, aren't you?
BEAU
Beau.
JULIE
Right. I'm Julie Black. You bought my mom's truck.
Beau and Julie shake hands.
BEAU
Oh. Bonnie's your mom. I probably should remember you.
JULIE
No, I'm the youngest of the family - you would remember my older brothers.
BEAU
Adam and Aaron. Adam and Aaron and...Jules, wasn't it?
JULIE
You do remember. No one's called me that since my brothers left.
BEAU
They aren't here?
JULIE
No, Adam got a scholarship to Washington State, and Aaron got married to a Samoan surfer - he lives in Hawaii now.
BEAU
Married? Wow. They're only a little older than I am.
JULIE
Yeah, it's crazy. So how do you like the truck?
BEAU
I love it. It runs great.
JULIE
Yeah, but it's really slow. I was so relieved when Charlie bought it. My mom wouldn't let me work on building another car when we had a perfectly good vehicle right there.
BEAU
It's not that slow.
JULIE
Have you tried going over sixty?
BEAU
No.
JULIE
Good. Don't.
BEAU
It does great in a collision.
JULIE
I don't think a tank could take out that old monster.
BEAU
So, you build cars?
JULIE
When I have free time, and parts. You wouldn't happen to know where I could get my hands on a master cylinder for a 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit, would you?
BEAU
Sorry. I haven't seen any lately, but I'll keep my eyes open for you.
LOGAN
You know Beaufort, Julie?
JULIE
We've sort of known each other since I was born.
LOGAN
How nice for you.
JULIE
Yes, isn't it wonderful?
LOGAN
Beau, Taylor and I were just saying that it was too bad none of the Cullens could come out today. Didn't anyone think to ask them?
SAM
You mean Dr. Carine Cullen's family?
LOGAN
Yes, do you know them?
SAM
The Cullens don't come here.
Beau stares at Sam, confused. Taylor taps Logan on the shoulder.
JULIE
So, is Forks driving you insane yet?
BEAU
I'd say that's an understatement.
Julie grins. Beau glances at Julie.
JULIE
What?
BEAU
You want to take a walk down the beach with me?
JULIE
Yeah, let's get out of here.
INT. CONVENIENCE STORE
Jeremy, McKayla, Allen, Becca, Erica, Leann, Boy 2, Boy 3, and Boy 4 crowd the small store, looking at different items. EMBER CALL stands behind the counter, a nametag on and is about to finish ringing Sean up.
EMBER
Thank you.
Sean walks away with his item. Quil walks in the store, and is startled by the crowd. She fumbles her way up to Ember.
QUIL
Busy?
EMBER
Nope.
Ember glances at her watch.
EMBER (CONT'D)
My shift ends in three...two...one...
(out the back door)
Mom, you're taking over!
Ember takes her nametag off and looks back at Quil.
EMBER (CONT'D)
Julie outside?
QUIL
Actually, no.
EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY
Quil and Ember leave the store and meander down the sidewalk.
EMBER
So where's Julie?
QUIL
You'll never guess.
Ember gasps.
EMBER
(heavily sarcastic)
She was eaten by a dinosaur!
QUIL
No. What are you? Stupid?
EMBER
It was a joke.
QUIL
Your jokes are shit.
Ember stops. Quil keeps going, then stops and turns around.
EMBER
What's wrong with you?
QUIL
That is between me and my therapist.
EMBER
I am your therapist.
QUIL
So you know what's wrong with me.
EMBER
Yeah. You're loudmouthed and obnoxious.
QUIL
Do you want to know where Julie is or not?
Ember starts walking again. Quil runs to follow her.
EMBER
Fine.
QUIL
She's with a boy.
EMBER
Wow. My dinosaur theory is sounding more and more probable. Where is she really?
QUIL
No, really. She's with some guy named Beaufort or something.
Quil scoffs.
QUIL (CONT'D)
What a weird name, right?
EMBER
Your name sounds like a bad energy drink.
QUIL
Touché. Although, that is coming from the girl named after fire.
EMBER
Excuse me, Ember is a cool name. But you want to know who has a really bad name? That sounds like a forgotten Outlander character?
QUIL
Who?
EMBER
Janet Cameron.
QUIL
I don't know who that is.
EMBER
Janie?
QUIL
Long braids? Hangs out with my mortal enemy?
EMBER
That depends. Which mortal enemy?
QUIL
She-who-must-not-be-named.
EMBER
I thought JK Rowling was transphobic. Why would she make Voldemort trans?
Quil smacks Ember's arm.
QUIL
(under her breath)
Lahote!
EMBER
Oh, you mean Paula?
QUIL
Don't say her name!
Ember rolls her eyes.
EMBER
Oh, my God.
EXT. FIRST BEACH - DAY
Beau and Julie walk down the beach for some time.
JULIE
Nice friends.
BEAU
Not mine.
JULIE
I could tell.
BEAU
Were those other kids your friends? That one seemed kind of...older.
JULIE
That's Samantha - Sam. She's nineteen, I think. I don't hang out with her. One of my friends was there before - Quil. I think she went up to the store.
BEAU
I don't know if I met her.
JULIE
I didn't get many names, either. I only remember yours because you used to pull my hair.
BEAU
I did? I'm so sorry!
Julie laughs.
JULIE
No - that was just my brothers. But I totally could have convinced you that you were guilty.
BEAU
Guess so. Hey, can I ask you something?
JULIE
Shoot.
BEAU
What did that girl - Sam - what did she mean about the doctor's family?
Long beat.
BEAU (CONT'D)
Hey, um, I didn't mean to be rude or anything.
JULIE
No worries. It's just...I'm not really supposed to talk about that.
BEAU
Is it a secret?
JULIE
Sort of.
BEAU
Forget I asked.
JULIE
Already blew it though, didn't I?
BEAU
I wouldn't say you did - that girl Sam was a little...intense.
JULIE
Cool. Sam's fault, then.
BEAU
Not really, though. I'm totally confused.
JULIE
Can I trust you?
BEAU
Of course.
JULIE
You won't go running to spill to your blond friend?
BEAU
Logan? Oh yeah, I can't keep anything from that guy. We're like brothers.
Julie laughs.
JULIE
Do you like scary stories, Beau?
BEAU
How scary are we talking about here?
JULIE
You'll never sleep again.
BEAU
Well, now I have to hear it.
Julie and Beau sit on a nearby driftwood tree.
BEAU (CONT'D)
I'm ready to be terrified.
JULIE
Do you know any of our old stories, about where we came from - the Quileutes, I mean?
BEAU
Not really.
JULIE
Well, there are lots of legends, some of them claiming to date back to the Great Flood - supposedly, the ancient Quileutes tied their canoes to the tops of the tallest trees on the mountain to survive like Noah and the ark. Another legend claims that we descended from wolves - and that the wolves are our sisters still. It's against tribal law to kill them. Then, there are the stories about the cold ones.
BEAU
The cold ones?
JULIE
Yes. There are stories of the cold ones as old as the wolf legends, and some much more recent. According to legend, my own great-grandmother knew some of them. She was the one who made the treaty that kept them off our land.
BEAU
Your great-grandmother?
JULIE
She was tribal elder, like my mother. You see, the cold ones are the natural enemies of the wolf - well, not the wolf, really, but the wolves that turn into women, like our ancestors. You could call them werewolves I guess.
BEAU
Werewolves have enemies?
JULIE
Only one. So, you see, the cold ones are traditionally our enemies. But this pack that came to our territory during my great-grandmother's time was different. They didn't hunt the way others of their kind did - they weren't supposed to be dangerous to the tribe. So, my great-grandmother made a truce with them. If they would promise to stay off our lands, we wouldn't expose them to the pale-faces.
BEAU
If they weren't dangerous, then why...?
JULIE
There's always a risk for humans to be around the cold ones, even if they're civilized like this clan alleged they were. You never know when they might get too hungry to resist.
BEAU
What do you mean "civilized"?
JULIE
They claimed that they didn't hunt humans. They supposedly were somehow able to prey on animals instead.
BEAU
So how does it fit in with the Cullens? Are they like the cold ones your great-grandmother met?
JULIE
No... They're the same ones. There are more of them now, a new female and a new male, but the rest are the same. In my great-grandmother's time they already knew of the leader, Carine. She'd been here and gone before your people had even arrived.
BEAU
And what are they? What are the cold ones?
JULIE
Blood-drinkers. Your people call them vampires. You have goosebumps on your neck.
BEAU
You're a good storyteller.
JULIE
Thanks, but you're just cold. It's crazy stuff, isn't it? No wonder my mom doesn't want us to talk about it to anyone.
BEAU
Don't worry, I won't give you away.
JULIE
I guess I just violated the treaty.
BEAU
I'll take it to the grave.
JULIE
Seriously, though, don't say anything to Charlie. He was pretty mad at my mom when he heard that some of us weren't going to the hospital since Dr. Cullen started working there.
BEAU
I won't say anything to Charlie, of course not.
JULIE
So, do you think we're a bunch of superstitious natives or what?
BEAU
No. I think you're very good at telling scary stories, though. I still have goose bumps, see?
Beau holds his arm up.
JULIE
Cool.
Julie and Beau look up to see McKayla and Jeremy walking toward them.
MCKAYLA
There you are, Beau.
McKayla waves her arm over her head.
JULIE
Is that your girlfriend?
BEAU
No, why does everyone think that?
JULIE
Maybe because she wants them to. You ever need a break from these friends of yours, let me know.
BEAU
That sounds cool.
McKayla has reached Beau and Julie, Jeremy a few paces back.
MCKAYLA
Where have you been?
BEAU
Jules here was just giving me the guided tour of First Beach.
MCKAYLA
Well. We're packing up - it looks like it's going to rain soon.
McKayla, Jeremy, Beau, and Julie all look up at the gray sky.
BEAU
Okay. I'm coming.
Beau stands.
JULIE
It was nice to see you again.
BEAU
It really was. Next time Charlie comes down to see Bonnie, I'll come with.
JULIE
That would be cool.
BEAU
And thanks.
Beau, McKayla, and Jeremy walk back to the parking lot. Julie looks out at the ocean.
A/N: You know I had to add the "La Push, baby" thing. It was too iconic not to.
Also, I love Quil and Ember's dynamic! And I know I've said this before, but I wish we had gotten more wolf banter. They all have such different and conflicting personalities, and it would be interesting to see how it worked.
And one last thing: I always felt like the way that SM wrote the wolves was highly racist (because it is), but I found no way to change it without deeply changing everything. However, even now, when I went through to edit, my white guilt was screaming at me like an exhausted toddler, and I knew I had to acknowledge it. It's pretty strange that I'm ending up posting this on Thanksgiving (even though I don't celebrate because of previously stated white guilt), especially since a lot (not all) of Native American families actually don't celebrate it. Instead they have Mourning Day, which is a day to celebrate their tribe and ancestors. If you're interested in this subject, check out the book 1491 by Charles C. Mann, which is all about the Native American tribes before Columbus came around, and why they started disappearing. It's a fascinating book full of incredible information. For example, did you know that Native Americans are more likely to be lactose intolerant?
