Issue 5: No Fun Fundraising
Manhattan, New Vale City
BGM-The Amazing Spider-Man (Game) OST-Overworld
It's nighttime as Spider-Man swings to the Daily Bugle rooftop, landing atop of its large sign to perch on while overlooking the city. "Wouldn't mind chatting with Harry…see what he knows about all this. But I can't risk telling him that Torchwick's gang plans to assassinate him or there'll be a major panic. And none of it matters if I can't get inside." Spidey pondered until he gets an idea, "Wait, I think I've got it." He leaps off the building and swings through the nightly city, "With that fundraiser's level of security, I can't use my press pass to bluff my way in…unless I'm REALLY supposed to be there. But a photographer needs a reporter…and I know one who's already planning to go."
Peter activates his communication system to call a certain blonde reporter, who answers, 'Hello?'
"Norah! Are you at the fundraiser?" Peter asks his co-worker.
'Yeah, why?' Norah Winters replies suspiciously.
"Think you can allow me to join you, as your photographer? I could REALLY use the money to pay for college." Peter lied.
'I dunno, Pete. Are you LYING to me just to help Yang on her investigation?' Norah remarks deviously, worrying Peter as she slowly learns the truth.
"What? No, of course not! She doesn't even know I'm calling you…" Peter retorts truthfully with some awkwardness.
'Oh really? Going against the back of your own wife, huh?' Norah quipped slyly.
"Norah, just let me come, please. Whatever beef there is between you and Yang has nothing to do with me. I just need the extra money." Peter remarked.
'Okay, okay. You can come. I'll go talk to security to let them know you're coming.' Norah said, allowing Peter to accompany her at the fundraiser.
"Yes! Thanks, Norah!" Peter replied happily.
'Promise to keep this between ourselves. Don't want to make your wife jealous.' Norah teased jokingly.
"Right…I'll keep my mouth shut. See ya at the theater." Peter said, hanging up the call. He then groans, "Yang's gonna kill me. She can do that later. I can't risk being late to the fundraiser. Torchwick's gang could make their move any time."
The webbed wonder swings at his top speed towards the theater at Midtown West that's housing the fundraiser. He hides on the rooftop to safely switch to his civilian clothes, before dropping down near the line into the theater. The line was long but not by much, as Peter only impatiently waited for about five minutes until he meets with the security guard.
"Name?" The security guard asked, looking tough to the scrawny photographer.
Peter shows him his press pass, "Uh, Peter Parker. Daily Bugle photographer. I'm here to accompany Norah Winters. Said she talked to you to allow me inside."
"Yeah. Girl said you were coming. Come on in." The security guard stoically gestured him to the entrance, allowing Peter to attend the fundraiser.

Theater
Peter walked into the theater and quickly notices a lot of rich people are hanging out, simply having a good quiet night while attending this anti-crime fundraiser. The heroic photographer walks past the bar, where he notices Norah standing idly. "Oh. Norah!" Peter called, waving to get her attention. "Thanks again for using me on this." He said while the blonde reporter approaches him.
Norah shrugs, "Hey, I get it. College is expensive. You want to make easy money taking boring pictures of wrinkly rich people, go nuts. But you should probably stay away from me."
"Let me guess. You've got some pointed questions about The Chaoskiller?" Peter claimed.
"Among other things. I give it ten minutes before I get kicked out. I'll show Yang who's the better reporter." Norah quipped.
"I still don't understand why you hate her so much." Peter responded.
"Oh Petey…" Norah says while giving him a shoulder hug, as well as a flirtatious smile that makes him uncomfortable, "Clearly you have no idea that women LOVE being competitive. Just because she's some world-famous Huntress doesn't mean she's the best reporter in the world. I'll prove that I'M the best reporter that doesn't rely on weird flaming hair powers. Now excuse me while I get in trouble interviewing Tiberius Stone." She jokes before walking away, unknowingly passing by the young Oscorp CEO, Harry Osborn, and his two friends, Weiss and Blake, all three of them wearing appropriate formal wear that makes them look handsome and beautiful.
Noticing Peter, Harry waves at him to get his attention. "Harry! Weiss! Blake!" Peter happily returns a wave of his own while running to reunite with his old friends.
Harry scoffs with a smile, "Pete. Long time no see. Been meaning to call you what I want for Christmas. Care to be my best man?"
Realizing what he's talking about, Peter chuckles with happiness, "Congratulations, Harry! You and Liz are finally tying the knot. This deserves a picture. Smile." He takes a step back to snap a picture of his best friend.
"Care to snap our picture?" Weiss smiled, posing next to Blake.
"Sure thing." Peter smiles, snapping a picture of the two beautiful huntresses. "I expected you to be here, Weiss, but I was a little surprised to see Blake. You're not rich. Well, uh, you're richer than me at least." He said awkwardly to his faunus friend.
Blake smiles, "I'm STILL the daughter of New Menagerie's Chieftain AND organizer of the Beacon Brigade. That and Weiss invited me." She quipped before taking a sip from her drink.
"So what're you doing here, Pete? This isn't your kind of scene. Still taking pics for the Bugle?" Harry asked.
"You bet." Peter nodded.
"How are things with Yang? And Kaine?" Blake asks the photographer.
"Things are fine between me and Yang. And Kaine's still as grumpy as ever. Heard you wanted him here to hang out with Ruby." Peter replied.
Blake frowns, "Yeah. Wanted him to learn how to live with a family to become a better person. Help him find peace by putting his past behind him and gain a strong sense of his own identity. And, as well…hope to avoid another Thane situation." She said somberly, recalling Thanos's own son being manipulated to follow a dark path and nearly destroyed the universe as a result.
"That's totally understandable. Kaine's stubborn as hell and while he may not like it, he's turning out to be every bit the hero that I am. And I'm sure he's grateful that he has someone like you looking out for him." Peter said, assuring the cat faunus.
"Thanks, Pete." Blake smiled.
"I'm on a similar boat I guess." Weiss proclaimed. "With all the new Dust and ISO-8 popping up thanks to Thanos and Thane, not to mention Roxxon nearly buying SDC, I've been playing a more active role in my family's company. To give my father some rest." She revealed.
"You and Harry are putting big targets on your backs." Peter warned them.
Harry says, "I know the risks, but I can't just stand around doing nothing while the Avengers and SHIELD are cleaning up the mess left behind by Thanos."
"That's why you started this fundraiser." Peter deduced.
"Too often lately both Oscorp and this city have been preyed on by criminals. It's why I've been working together with Beacon and other Huntsmen like those in Blake's volunteer group by supplying them with tech to suppress the crime wave. Don't want to sound disrespectful, but vigilantes like Spider-Man only seem to make the problem worse." Harry said, but still supports his best friend's heroics.
"Well, you may have a point." Peter admitted.
Just then, a waiter approaches the group with a tray of drinks that he wants to offer them, "Drinks, ladies? Gentlemen?"
Strangely, this act triggers Peter's Spider-Sense, prompting him to purposely knock down the tray while making it look like an accident, causing the drinks to spill to the floor. "Whoops! Sorry." Peter apologizes.
"You know, don't worry about it. We have to go anyways. I've got…important things to do." Harry said to his pal, walking away from the scene with Weiss and Blake.
"Me too." Peter said, watching the suspicious waiter leave to a backroom. "Something fishy about that guy…better follow him."
BGM-Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) OST- Fisk Hideout (Fisk Thugs) Battle/Fight Music Theme 1
The hidden vigilante secretly tails the waiter into an empty corridor. Peter hides behind the corner and watches the waiter walk into a room at the end of the hall and shut the door lock, which makes him look more suspicious. "Time to get into my work clothes." Peter jokes, spotting an open door that leads into an empty room. He enters the room to change, quickly walking out of the room as Spider-Man.
"No doorbell…guess I'd better get creative." Spidey spots an air vent above the door and uses his webbing to pull down the grate. He zips to the wall and crawls through the air vent until he arrives at the backstage, spying on the suspicious waiter walking through an exit gate and three Torchwick Thugs guarding three hostages.
"Please, what do you want?" A hostage asked, kneeling in fear before the criminals.
"From you? Nothing. We just need your waiter uniforms so we can serve Osborn a special recipe." A Torchwick Mobster retorted.
"W-what are you going to do with us?" Another hostage asked.
The criminal mockingly chuckles at him, "Depends how much you bother me."
'Gotta rescue those hostages without being seen. Can't risk them getting hurt.' thought Spidey. He fires a Trip Mine on the chest of one of the thugs, much to their surprise as he quickly gets pulled towards another thug, knocking them both out upon slamming together.
"Hey, what the-?!" The remaining thug was surprised and immediately cut off by a web-strike from Spider-Man, knocking him out cold.
"Thank you. I was so scared…" A rescued waiter said to the hero.
"You're safe now. Stay clear while I pursue that other waiter." Spidey told the rescued hostages, who nod in agreement. The webbed hero runs to the exit gate and quips, "Open Sesame! Okay, that didn't work…on to Plan B." He uses his web to pull down the weight and zips to the other side before the gate slams shut. He runs into another corridor and spots the criminal waiter waiting for him at the other side.
"You won't get me so easily, Spider!" The disguised criminal proclaimed.
Just then, a strong presence triggers the Spider-Sense as it rams through the wall on the hero's right. The presence is actually a brute in high-tech armor, who Spider-Man easily avoids and web-strikes him through a wall, smashing him into a garage.
"What's with the armor? Don't you have enough fat to protect yourself?" Spidey quips while attacking the brute with a spinning kick. The brute attempts to pound him, but the webhead was too fast and counters with a heavy punch to the face. Then, the brute manages to deflect the hero to the wall and brutally grab him by his arms.
"I'll squash you like a bug!" The armored brute shouts while slamming him to the ground.
"Why not squash me like an arachnid? How come that is never an option?" Spidey quipped, blinding him with webbing before knocking him back with a backflip kick. He charges his Concussive Blast gadget to their maximum and unleash a concentrated shockwave at the brute with enough power to stun him, leaving him wide open for a brutal assault from the webslinger before getting knocked out by a kick to the face.
Spider-Sense tingles again as the garage door opens, allowing more armored Torchwick Thugs inside to fight the webslinger. "Damn you, Spider-Man! You're ruining everything!" An armored thug snarls while throwing a punch, which was easily avoided by the hero.
"That's the idea." Spidey quips while web-throwing a large trash container at the thugs, stunning some of them. "It's in my resume. I EXCEL at stopping criminal scum that are trying to kill the CEO of a multinational company." He rambles while beating down on the thugs, "Don't think I haven't noticed the Oscorp tech you're wearing. Who's your designer? Tinkerer? I bet its Tinkerer."
"As if we'll tell you!" retorted a criminal, throwing an energy bola that binds Spider-Man.
"That's too bad." Spidey grunts, struggling as he uses all of his strength to break free from his binds before dodging an armored punch from another thug. "'Cause I would REALLY like to know, and perhaps pay them a visit." He jokes while deploying a Suspension Matrix to the ground, which creates a gravity field that lifts all enemies into the air, leaving them helpless while Spider-Man easily defeats them with air combos.
BGM End
"Well, I saved Harry from Torchwick. Might as well stick around a little longer, see if I can learn more about the gangs and who's building armor for Torchwick." Spidey said, planning to eavesdrop on the guests. He returns to the same room he used to change to his costume, switching back to his civilian clothing. "These people are movers and shakers. I can learn a lot just by listening in." He murmured while walking back into the main party room, with the guests clueless about the criminal infiltration.
Peter walks around, casually passing by guests that are in the middle of conversations. Some of the things they say are irrelevant to his investigation, while others speculate the identity of The Chaoskiller and mention criminals like Kingpin and Cletus Kasady. While approaching the bar, Peter notices the headmaster of Beacon Academy, Ozpin, taking a sip from his drink. The old headmaster notices his former student with a smile as he approaches him, "Mr. Parker. It has been some time."
"It certainly has, Professor Ozpin." Peter greets his former teacher with a handshake. "How are you doing these days? I've heard rumors that you're planning to retire as headmaster."
"It HAS crossed my mind a few times. A lot of things have changed over the years and I feel it's time someone else takes charge of Beacon Academy." Ozpin said.
"Like maybe Professor Goodwitch." Peter recommended.
"She certainly is capable of the role. But know that even if I retire, I'll still be around to advise future generations of Huntsmen." Ozpin responded.
"That's believable." Peter quipped, knowing the headmaster is immortal.
Ozpin chuckles, "What about you, Peter? Things have definitely changed in your life in the past months, as well as Spider-Man's. If I'm not mistaken, I no longer sense that 'Other' soul that dwelled within him. Have an explanation?" He asked stoically, sensing that Peter is no longer bonded to the spiritual force that is The Other.
Peter answers, "Oh, well, I heard from Spidey it was because of the Soul Stone, during the recent Infinity War. Baddies like MODOK, Ebony Maw, and of course Thanos were using it to weaken the heroes and trying to steal their souls. And when Thanos's son was using it in conjunction with an out-of-control cosmic armor, he unknowingly stripped The Other outta Spidey. He didn't know he lost it 'til shortly after the universe was saved. But he told me he doesn't miss them that much. He has a new suit now to make up for those lost powers."
"I see. Well, nice to hear he's doing well." Ozpin remarked.
"So it's true that Oscorp is supplying Beacon with tech to stop the gang war?" Peter asked the headmaster.
Ozpin nods, "That is true. This gang war affects all of us. No one is safe, not even experienced Huntsmen. A few have been killed while searching for the Chaoskiller, and it's a lot harder to find one man than an entire gang of them."
"Have the Huntsmen been gathering intelligence on the gangs?" Peter asked.
"For some time." Ozpin answered. "Each of them are becoming clever. Some are operating in cells, each knowing very little about the others. When one group is taken down, it rarely leads to further arrests."
"But someone's got to be calling the shots." Peter remarked.
"They do have central bases of operations. Very few know where they are. Finding them will be another matter entirely. But once we DO find them, this gang war will end. The more the gangs escalate, the harder it becomes for them to hide." Ozpin replied.
"So you're saying gangs are still smuggling weapons and tech into the city?" Peter questioned.
"Quite possibly." Ozpin nodded.
"Peter?" said a familiar woman near the duo.
Both Peter and Ozpin turn around spotting Rồng Xanh approaching them. "Oh. Ms. Xanh. Almost forgot you were also attending the fundraiser." Peter greets her, while Ozpin stares at her suspiciously.
"Yes. But I wasn't aware you were attending as well." Xanh replied.
"Society pages. I'm a part-time photographer for the Daily Bugle." Peter takes out his camera, "Smile." He said, taking a picture of the Vietnamese woman. "Great! Got it! Thanks! So what were you and May talking about earlier?" He asked, wanting to learn more about their secret conversation.
"We just wanted to catch up on a few things. That's all." Xanh said, before glancing at Ozpin, "Who is this gentleman? I hope I wasn't interrupting anything between you two."
"No, no. It's fine. Rồng Xanh, this is Professor Ozpin, headmaster of Beacon Academy. I briefly attended his school a while ago." Peter said, introducing his former teacher to the mystery woman.
"Nice to meet you, Professor." Xanh politely greets the professor with a handshake.
"Likewise, Ms. Xanh." Ozpin accepted the handshake.
"Would love to stick around, but I gotta leave to take care of some other business. It was nice seeing you two. Take care." Peter said to his elders, gesturing a goodbye while leaving towards the exit.
"Bye, Peter." Xanh smiles, waving goodbye.
"Take care of yourself." Ozpin told him.
BGM-Spider-Man 3 (Game) OST-Black Tension
Once it became clear that Peter has left the building, the demeanor of both Xanh and Ozpin instantly changes to serious expressions. Ozpin stands next to the woman and whispers to her, "There is more to you than meets the eye."
Unfazed, Xanh remarks, "The same can be said about you…Ozma."
Briefly shocked, Ozpin says, "You seem to know my history, yet I do not know yours. Were you not born of Remnant?"
"No, of Earth. And that is all I will disclose to you." Xanh replied.
"If a being like you is here, then it must mean great and dark forces are arising." Ozpin proclaimed quietly.
"Not if I have anything to say about it. For now, keep it to yourself. I trust you will. Now excuse me, Professor. I have funds to raise." Xanh said ominously before walking away from the immortal headmaster, who is very curious on her true identity.
