Summary: Sakura swore revenge, but changed her mind, and wished for peace and a quiet life when her torturer finally killed her. Her wish was granted, and she was reborn as an unremarkable woman with her old namesake, and who came with a cute little bun. However, her past life haunts her constantly and she is afraid of it coming back knocking on her door.
The Final Distance
The construction of her home took longer than expected, Kenji informed her 2 months ago. She wasn't able to see a board or brick of the house being constructed for four months. When she wasn't helping Takeru with reading, she was exploring the village with him, much to his delight.
Fortunately, her reputation in the village got worse than before. She wasn't just the village slut but also the village thug which suited her just fine. The insults and stares of disgust were rarely pointed at her when she wasn't looking. She would rather not deal with them at all and would only give back what she got in return.
Exploring the village was an experience for her and it really opened her eyes. The memories she received from the previous owner and her own were separate, so to recall memories from the previous owner she had to focus and search through the sea of memories. So the village traditions and what not, seemed new to her until she searched those memories for explanations.
The Land of Honey was mostly made up of rural villages that are involved in all aspects of farming. Honey Fields Village wasn't a large village or popular but it was involved in all aspects of farming. It was steeped in tradition and history and they followed their traditions very closely which was why it wasn't that popular.
The main tradition that turned people away was their strict rules on courting and marriage. Courtship could only begin when a man approaches a woman with blue roses and presents it to her. If the woman accepts then they will enter the courtship period and go on dates. Furthermore, if all goes well and both parties like each other then the marriage will be next. This tradition is why the previous owner was shunned and treated as an outcast.
Sakura thought the tradition wasn't that bad and she admired that the people kept their traditions alive and well in such a modern and more open-minded world. However, the previous owner's circumstances shouldn't have allowed her to be treated as an outcast. It wasn't her fault that she was raped by a beast of a man.
Honey Fields Village was also the only village left in the Land of Honey that believed in the Harvest Goddess. According to history, they believe she is a divine deity who is the ancestral mother of all life and is the primal mother of the lands. History states even before the Sage of the Six Paths, the Harvest Goddess blessed the lands, allowing the growth of nature all over the lands. The Harvest Goddess was written as a perfect beautiful goddess in all of the history books she could get her hands on in the village.
Sakura didn't want to believe, wanting to rule out the villagers as crazy, since they were practically the only ones in the entire world worshipping this goddess. Yet, her circumstances made her believe. She should be dead right now, and instead, she was able to have a second chance without using some forbidden technique. It was a genuine second chance she was given by some deity. She became a fast believer in the four months she was staying here. Perhaps she wanted something to believe in, or it was just a phase, but this belief made her feel safe and secure.
There was another tradition, more of law, that was prominent among the village. Every household must either raise animals, honey bees, or cultivate crops and if they didn't want to do either of those they must contribute to the village in some way. She found out they were only four farmers in the entire village that did everything from raising animals, raising crops and bees.
So in order to contribute to the village, for those in farming, the village trader would collect the goods from each household in multiple carts and bring them back to the Trader's Outpost. The best product would be sold outside of the village while the others would be sold locally in the village. The earnings would be divided between the village, and the farmer, with the farmer getting the higher percentage.
She didn't know a thing about farming but she was willing to try something new if it meant supporting her son and herself. She just hoped her house would have a nice amount of land for her to work with. She had seen those other farmers and they had large fields of crops and many animals.
"Mommy, you must get dressed so we can look at our new home today." Takeru rushed up to her, jumping up and down excitedly.
"I am already dressed, baby," Sakura poked his nose and smiled, "I just need to braid my hair, and then we can go," Sakura told him. This was the day that she would finally get to see the house according to Kenji. She already had their things packed in bags. She didn't know what to expect when she sees the house but she was excited after staying in the inn for so long.
She watched Takeru play with his toy and felt joy in her heart. Takeru didn't like malnourished anymore and had put on some size. He was still skinny but not like before and she was glad. Furthermore, during the four months, she taught him to read and realized that he was very smart. He was learning very fast like she was at his age. She knew that when he finally goes to school he would surpass the children there because of his smarts. He only needed a mother to teach him and if the previous owner had tried harder for him maybe she could've had a better ending.
When she was finished with her hair, she held Takeru's hand and walked out of the inn. They were instantly avoided when people spotted them. She wore a smile on her face as Takeru babbled about something he read in one of his fantasy books. She walked down the dirt path that leads to where her new house was and when she got there she was stupefied.
The house was much closer to the village, and before she could take in the breathtaking house, the surroundings that she was accustomed to had changed drastically. She could see that trees had been cleared away, allowing for a wider dirt path, and was replaced by beautiful flowers of different kinds and a wooden fence.
"Mommy, everything is so pretty," Takeru whispered.
"Do you like it, Takeru?" She looked down at the boy next to her and smiled.
Takeru nodded. "I love it!"
Her eyes moved from the surroundings to her new house which was made completely out of stone and brick. It wasn't large but it looked intimate and cozy. A wooden fence surrounded the front of the house with a wooden gate and peeling white paint. The grass was green and yellow, scorched by the hot, blazing sun in the summer, and two huge trees, one with red and orange leaves stood in front of the house. She could see Kenji waiting for her along with the village elder. She walked up to them with Takeru in hand.
"Morning, Mr. Kenji, and Mr. Kurata," Sakura smiled at Kenji and nodded at Kuma.
"Morning, Mr. Kenji, and Mr. Kurata!" Takeru repeated what she said politely.
Kenji nods his head. "Morning to you both." Kenji grinned.
Kuma cleared his throat. "Miss Shirai, congratulations on your new home."
"Thank you," Sakura replied. She didn't care for him after what he did to her months ago and was only giving him courtesy as the village elder.
"Now that you have acquired a sizeable piece of land-"
"That originally belonged to you and your family" Kenji cut in, earning a glare from Kuma.
Kuma continued. "You are required to contribute to the village. How will you do that?"
"I will be a farmer." Sakura smiled.
Kuma looked surprised as did Kenji. "Farming is hard work. Are you sure you can do it?" Kenji asked.
"I'm willing to do anything for my son," Sakura told him and turned back to Kuma.
"Well then, this will be recorded in the village register. We will install a shipping box in front of your house by the end of the week," Kuma informed with a pained expression, "with that being said, I must be going."
Sakura watched him walked away quickly and turned to Kenji. "What is wrong with him?"
Kenji shrugged and wore a bored expression. "I don't know," Sakura observed him carefully. She caught his comment about the land earlier and knew it had something to do with the previous owner's family. She didn't want to dig too deep so she said nothing.
"Come on, let's show you the inside of the house," Kenji looked down at Takeru. "Do you want to see inside your new home?
"Yes, please!" Takeru grinned.
Sakura followed Kenji through the gate and into the house. As they explored the house she loved it more and more. It was already furnished as well and she was impressed, yet still uncomfortable with it. It felt like she was getting it for free and she didn't like owing anyone. Still, she wanted to enjoy the moment of having a new house
The cottage looked as if it was straight out of a fairytale with a happy ending. It looked like many things. The whole house was made of dark red bricks and oak. There were two small bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a dining room. There was a stove, two small wooden chairs, a wooden circular table, brown cupboards, pots, pans, and other kitchenware along with a bay window that faced the front lawn. They walked into the backyard and there was a field for growing crops, a barn, and a chicken coop.
Sakura was really uncomfortable and turned to Kenji who was talking to Takeru. "I...don't feel comfortable taking all of this for free so how about I pay you forty thousand ryo for everything."
"Saku-"
"Please." Sakura cut him off with pleading eyes, "You already did so much for me that paying back would take me a long time so please let me do this." She looked directly into his eyes in silence as Takeru looked up at them curiously.
"What are you doing, Mommy?" He asked.
Kenji chuckles before grinning. "Fine, send me the money any time you want, you stubborn woman."
Sakura let out a sigh of relief.
"Since you're going to be doing some farming you will need animals," said Kenji, "I know someone that can get you started. I will come and get you tomorrow so you can check out the animals."
She nodded. "Thank you, Kenji and I will be ready tomorrow."
"Alright then," Kenji turned to Takeru, "goodbye, little guy."
"Goodbye, Mr. Kenji," Takeru said with a shy smile.
When he left Sakura led Takeru back into his house and showed him his bedroom. "This is your very own bedroom," Sakura told him and he looked upset.
"Does this mean I can't sleep with Mommy anymore?" Takeru said softly.
"You can only sleep with me sometimes," Sakura replied, patting him on his head, "but you have to sleep in here, alright baby?"
Takeru reluctantly nodded. "I will be obedient, Mommy."
Sakura let go of his hand and he immediately went to explore the house some more. She moved to the window and smiled.
'Thank you for your blessings, Harvest Goddess.'
Boruto avoided this for months but his mother was persistent. He sat across from Sumire, trying his best to not look directly into the blushing girl's face. He glanced at his mother and sister who were blissful, and in their own world. He was growing annoyed by the minute with his expression turning ugly and he immediately stood up, knocking his chair over.
"I'm going to the bathroom." He coldly said and walked away, ignoring his mother's protests.
He burst into the bathroom and looked into the mirror. There was no way he could ever date Sumire in this life and he knew that from the bottom of his heart. He was handsome and that he knew. There were many girls who wanted his hand in marriage, who wanted him to bed them, but they could never catch his attention. He was already in love with someone.
He was in love with Sakura Haruno.
It took him months of denial to reach the point he was at currently. Maybe it was the years of trying to find out what really happened that was the catalyst for this love she harbored for an older woman. But the more he learned about her made his love for her grow. He wished he could've been there in the war to watch her bloom and comfort her all of the times Sasuke made her sad.
The more he learned it also nurtured his hate for his mentor and father. He hated them both for the damage they did to her. He wanted to confront his father and beat him so badly that he wouldn't even look or think about Sakura anymore. He knew his father still had feelings for the woman and it made him even madder. He would save Sakura and protect her if he gets the chance.
Through some secret investigations, Shikamaru and he had found out where Sasuke kept Sakura. She was locked in a house littered with seals that even the Byakugan couldn't see through. They planned for months and tonight was the night they would finally break into the house and rescue Sakura.
'I'm going to finally save you, Sakura.' Boruto thought as he climbed out of the bathroom window. He met up with Shikamaru at the secret house and when he got there he found Tsunade there as well.
"What is she doing here?" Boruto snarled, glaring at the old woman.
"I told her about what happened," Shikamaru replied, "and she is good with seals."
"I...I owe Sakura this..." Tsunade whispered sadly, "I did her wrong by not believing her. I must make it up to her."
Boruto scoffed, ignoring her, and turned to Shikamaru. "Aren't you guys gonna start?" He asked impatiently. He didn't care for Tsunade's apologies. They had years to investigate properly and didn't care.
"This is going to take a while so stand back," Shikamaru told him as he and Tsunade began breaking the seals one by one.
Boruto paced up and down impatiently while cursing under his breath. Despite his pacing, he was alert in case Sasuke showed up. An hour later, they managed to break the seals open.
Shikamaru panted. "Let's get Sakura out of there."
Boruto pushed chakra into his feet charged into the house, breaking down the door, and when he got inside he found it empty. His heart dropped and a feeling of dread filled his body. He felt cold all over and didn't even hear or respond to Shikamaru or Tsunade's words.
"Where is she?!" He growled, activating his jougan eye.
We have some history, a name, and traditions for Honey Fields Village. The village was inspired a bit by the Harvest Moon series. This story is more drama than action but there will be some action in the future.
Boruto has finally admitted his love for Sakura that has been brewing for years. He is in love with Sakura through what he learned and an image he built up of her. Is it sweet? Yes. Is it healthy? I don't think so tbh.
