"Sounds exciting" his voice answered through the phone
"Right because going to some charity event really is how I wanted to spend my Friday night" she held the phone next to her ear
"It can't be all bad, you in your whites has always been a sexy view"
"Really?"
"Oh a hundred percent, shows off your curves more than those DPNU's"
"I'm not wearing my white's Mike"
"So your naked! Even better!" he laughed
"It's a casual but presentable event, the woman are in dresses the men's in tuxes"
"And my invite got lost in the mail? What I wouldn't kill to see you in a beautiful dress"
"Hmm, so mentioning that it's got a cut in it that goes up to my thigh"
"Your killing me" he groaned
"I knew you only wanted me for my body"
"What can I say"
'CO to the bridge, CO to the bridge' echoed through the phone
"Looks like your needed elsewhere" she leaned against the railing
"I'm sorry.. we're tracking a FFV orders from NAVCOM"
"It's okay I get it"
"Listen, maybe later you can send me a little pic?"
"Of?" she smirked
"You in your dress, although I don't need to imagine how beautiful you look when I've got my favourite photo of you on my desk" he looked across at the picture of Kate
he took last time they saw each other of her watching the sunset the glow sending all different colours across her face and hair, illuminating her beauty
"If you're lucky I may send you a few"
'CO to the bridge at the rush'
"I should.."
"Yeah, stay safe"
"Enjoy your night Kate"
"Not possible without you" she smiled sadly
"I love you McGregor"
"I love you Sailor" she replied before the line went dead, placing her phone on the table Kate looked up at the stars when a presence stopped next to her.
"That the boyfriend?" he held out a champagne glass for her
"He's currently out at sea always makes the time to call me but unfortunately like my luck it's only ever for a short period of time" she turned to face him
"I don't know you seem pretty lucky to me" he smiled when she took the glass
"Why do you say that?" she took a sip of her champagne
"You managed to drag me to this event, considering I never go to these things I'd say you luck is high ranking up there with the best"
"You don't like wearing expensive suits and drinking thousand dollar champagne?" she raised an eyebrow
"I'm more of a comfy Pj's, setting up the lounge as a homemade movie theatre kind of person" he placed his glass on the small table behind them
"I always preferred a good wine myself" she placed her glass next to his
"I personally never saw the appeal in champagne" he shifted to lean against the railing
"Thank you for accompanying me to this thing" she smiled softly
"Hey not a problem, I am happy to step in as the temporary eye candy"
"Eye candy?" she snickered
"Got to keep the reputation up for the ladies if they see a strong good looking man willing to help a friend they just throw themselves at you" he nudged her arm
"Strong, good looking? I don't exactly know about that" she teased
"Ohh you burnt me bad there McGregor" he laughed softly
"It's really beautiful out here" she looked up at the stars
"It sure is" he looked across at her
"You're not enjoying the view" she felt his eyes on her
"Believe me my view is better"
"Jim.." she turned her head to look at him jumping slightly when he placed a soft kiss against her lips.
The kiss lasting for no more than a few seconds his hand trailing up her arm and resting against the side of her neck pulling back he brushed his thumb against the sensitive skin of her cheek,
looking at him in confusion she found herself moving back in and kissing him passionately
her own hands coming to rest behind his neck pulling him closer with it not taking much for him to oblige his free hand moved along her hip and behind her back;
"Mmm-hmm" a person cleared her throat causing them to pull away
"Sir.." Jim cleared his throat when Kate took a step back
"Captain, Commander we're ready for the speeches"
"We'll be right there" Kate nodded
"As you were" he moved back inside,
"Kate.." he reached out for her
"We need to get inside…" she picked up her phone placing it in her clutch
"I'm sorry I.."
"It never happened"
"I.."
"It never happened" she repeated
"It never happened" he nodded watching her move around the table and enter inside,
running his thumb across his still tingling lips he followed after her.
Present Time-
Later that night after a nice dinner and retreat back to Kate's apartment before the rain,
Kate was sitting in Mike's lap her knees dug into the couch while her hands moved along his chest,
"God…" he groaned when she began kissing along his neck running his owns hands along her arms his eyes shut at the feel of Kate kissing him after so long
"I missed you" she whispered in his ear,
taking a deep breath he grabbed her hands and pushed her back slightly
"I…"
"Is something wrong?" she breathed deeply
"I can't.." he moved her off his lap as he shifted to stand
"What?" she tried to catch her breath
"Kate I love you; you know I do.."
"Well I love you too" she looked at him confused
"Do you? Do you really?" he hovered near the window with his back to her
"I don't understand?"
"If you love me why go and get attention from another man?"
"Another man?"
"I heard you in your office today with Jim.." he turned to face her
"Oh.."
"Oh? That's really all you're going to say?"
"What do you want me to say Mike?" she moved off the couch
"Did you kiss him?"
"Mike.."
"Just be honest with me" he watched her pace
"Yes alright I kissed him, is that what you want to hear?"
"Why?"
"It was a charity thing last week for work..."
"I don't want to know how it happened Kate"
"I was missing you and he was there.. it just happened, we were thankfully interrupting, and it was over before it went any further" she ignored his comment
"Your pining this on me now?"
"No of course not…"
"So you didn't kiss him?"
"Just please..." she moved towards him
"Do I not make you happy anymore?" he looked at her sadly
"What? Of course you do!"
"But you kissed another man Kate, we're supposed to be partners how do you expect me to feel knowing my girlfriend missed me so much that she.. that she kissed another man that dosen't exactly scream 'I miss you' to me" he struggled
"It was nothing, it didn't mean anything"
"Then why did it happen!" he yelled making her jump
"You weren't here"
"That's your excuse, I wasn't here?"
"You didn't exactly jump at trying to get me to stay" she huffed
"Are you kidding me? I begged you, I acted like a child begging you not to leave me"
"And you thought saying the three words I wanted to here was the only way you could get me to stay?"
"That isn't what this is about Kate, you kissed another man!"
"I was lonely and so confused; Jim was making me feel all these things that you never did and.."
"Wait.." he interrupted holding a hand up
"What?"
"Do you.. do you like him?"
"Mike.."
"Don't try and spare my feelings, I just want the truth" his voice broke
"The truth"
"You owe me that much"
"The truth is I love you and it was a terrible mistake that I wish I could take back"
"God, don't lie to me Kate!"
"I'm not!"
"I've seen the way you were with him, the way you looked at him"
"I..."
"If you really loved me you wouldn't have kissed him" he grabbed his jacket off the back of the chair
"I do love you" she protested when he walked past her towards the door
"How can I trust anything you say?"
"When have I ever lied to you" she looked at him sadly when he placed a hand on the door handle
"A single lie is enough to create doubt Kate you may have never lied before but how am I meant to believe what your saying is the god to honest truth?"
"So what you're just going to run away because of one stupid mistake?"
"No.." he looked over his shoulder at her "I'm not running..."
"You run me around for two years but the moment I make a stupid mistake you're ready to run away?"
"I think we both need time to.. "
"Your breaking up with me?"
"No... I'm saying, we need to take a break, so we work out what we want out of life whether that's together or with other people.." he turned the handle and pulled the door back
"You are breaking up with me aren't you…" she teared up
"Kate…"
"Wow…" she struggled to hold back the tears
"I'll book a flight back to Cairns tonight"
"Don't leave like this…"
"I can't stay here when your undecided about how your feeling, I'd rather be productive keep my mind busy…"
"So the minute things get tuff you run back to Hammersley?" she spat running her hand through her hair in as a calming method
"At least I know she can't hurt me the way you did"
"She is a bloody boat!"
"And it means more to me than anything!"
"Even me?"
"Kate I…"
"I hate you"
"You don't mean…"
"I wish I never met you" her voice answered with hatred
"I should go before something else we'll both regret gets said" he shook his head shutting the door behind him his footsteps echoing down the hall of the apartment complex,
wrapping her arms around her Kate's eyes connected with the photo of her and Mike the tears she'd so hard to hold back flowing like a river
as she fell to the floor in a crumpled heap her cries drowning out the sound of the rain now hitting the roof,
the crackling of thunder mimicking exactly how her heart was feeling.
