Bella

By now, I was an expert at sneaking past vampires. I began to make elaborate plans that would never work, knowing that Alice would be focused on these. The only way to get around Alice was to be spontaneous. Spontaneous was not my strong suit.

I walked around the house, something that I had been doing since Edward left. Rosalie and Esme were hunting, and only Alice was home. She was leaving me alone, but that would probably change soon.

I wondered if I could get near enough to the werewolves before Alice could stop me. If she couldn't see my future, then I might stand a chance. I walked down the stairs. When I was halfway down, Alice appeared in front of me. She looked worried. Almost as worried as last spring, when she saw me in the mirrored room with James.

"Don't go anywhere. I need to go find Edward." She looked preoccupied.

"Alice, what happened? What did you see? If you're leaving, shouldn't you take me with you?" I was wondering if I wouldn't have to sneak anywhere. Surely I would be safe with Alice by my side.

"No, you can't come." Her face was blank and paler than usual.

"Alice, what did you see?" What could upset her so much? It wasn't like the girl that fell from the sky was a danger. If she wanted to hurt me, she could have done it six hours ago.

"I shouldn't tell you."

"Alice, if you're leaving me here alone, then I should know what the danger is!" Alice sighed.

"I'll tell you, but know that you're responsible for whatever Edward does to me." Alice spoke with a serious tone, and I couldn't tell if she was joking or not. "The girl, I'm not sure what she had to do with this, but I saw you dead. You were laying limp in the grass, and she was standing over your body, looking up at the sky."

I stood there. Suddenly, sneaking out to Edward didn't seem like such a good idea.

"If she's coming for me, wouldn't taking me with you be better?" Alice would be able to see her coming. I didn't want to be left alone. Alice's presence, which had seemed like a burden, suddenly seemed like a comfort.

"No!" There was sudden vehemence in Alice's voice. "If I take you with me, there isn't a single future where you survive."

"But how would one girl be able to get around you?" I was concerned for Alice when she was faced with bigger opponents, but one girl? She should be fine.

"I don't know. I can't see clearly with her there. This is the one vision that is clear that she's in." Did that mean that it was more likely? I wanted to ask, but the look on Alice's face gave me the answer. Yes.

"I need to go. If I can tell anyone, the odds of your survival go up. You need to go upstairs. Don't open any windows. Don't go outside unless you hear howling. Lock all of the doors, don't forget the kitchen door. Stay safe, Bella." Alice leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. Then she was gone.

I locked all the doors, remembering the kitchen door. I locked the windows as well. I went upstairs to Edward's room. I shut and locked the door. I sat down on the couch, suddenly overwhelmed.

A howl split the air.

I rushed downstairs, and out the door. I headed in the direction of the howl. As I stumbled through the woods, I heard a soft noise. I looked to my left, and saw the girl. She was looking at me with sad, sorrowful eyes.

"I'm so sorry. I promise this won't hurt." I turned, and ran in the opposite direction. I didn't hear her coming after me, but she was in front of me.

"I'm so sorry. But if you had a brother, wouldn't you do anything for him?" She took a step towards me. I tried to take a step back, but tripped. Curse my clumsiness! Before, I hit the ground, hot hands wrapped around my waist, holding me up. The girl had moved as fast as any vampire or werewolf. She was smaller than I was, but had caught me with minimal effort. I began to shake. I didn't want to die.

"Hey, it's okay." Her voice was comforting.

"If you're going to kill me, just get it over with." My voice shook.

"You won't die today. I swear that if you die today, my soul will go to the Nine Fires. All you have to do is do exactly as I say."
