A Twist of Fate: Dark Fate

Chapter Nine

Of course, when school was over that day Kami had landed herself in detention. For the rest of the school days that week as well. And Saturday. It was a bit ridiculous. The school had even called her mother. The problem twin was just living up to her reputation it seemed.

But Kami did more than tolerate her situation or endure it. She spent her time dwelling over every detail of that Friday in May when she switched lives with her sister for a day. She poured over every interaction with peers, teachers, her mother and Jared that she could recall. Looking for the catalyst of the fallout concocted by her sister's twisted imagination.

She had been combing over her brief interactions with Jared for that day when she heard, "you have the ugliest concentrating face."

Kami blinked, readjusting to her present surroundings. When she had picked this seat in detention, she had chosen it for a reason. Seclusion. An island surrounded by other empty desks. Her gaze swept to her left side, confirming Paul's unwelcomed presence.

"File your complaint in the suggestion box." Kami pointed her finger across the room to the discrete trashcan nestled in the corner adjacent to the only exit.

Paul smirked, and Kami rolled her eyes. "Maybe on my departure."

"I missed you at the school entrance this morning. Where's my fifty bucks?" Kami held out her hand, the one just a moment ago pointing to the trashcan, wondering if he would call on her bullshit.

"I won," Paul sneered with a confident edge that intrigued Kami.

"Says who? See the bags under these beautiful brown eyes?" Kami sagged her face dramatically to emphasize her point. The bags were kind of a permanent feature these days though (not like she'd admit that!). Too many nights she had spent restless for them to retract with one full night of sleep.

Paul offered Kami a knowing look. A touch incredulous over her blatant lie. "Your haggard look is a direct result of the bender you were on the morning." Paul leaned in closer to Kami, still slumped over her desk. "Sorry I missed it," he whispered, not sounding that sorry at all.

"News around here sure spreads like wildfire."

"How could it not? Heard you put on quite a show with Jakey-boy. Too bad I slept in this morning. If I had come across you, I would have joined in on the fun."

Kami snorted. "Yeah, maybe it should have been you instead. His GQ image was stripped away some this morning."

"GQ?"

"Think on it. Or ask your girlfriend." Kami waved him off with her hand. Not embarrassed to share her opinion, just not feeling up to it for some reason.

"I won the bet. So, take my number." Kim watched Paul scribble on the back of a receipt he withdrew from his pants pocket. Their phones were confiscated by the teacher "watching" over this detention. He was sleeping though at his desk. Otherwise, her and Paul wouldn't be conversing for as long as they had. "I expect front row. And don't worry, I'll cheer you on." The amusement in his voice irked Kami. Begrudgingly, she swiped the receipt from his hand when it was offered to her.

"Also-"

"Lahote! What are you doing here?" Kami's attention was now on the awake, red in the face teacher. "I don't have you on my list for this detention?" The teacher waved his clipboard in the air.

"Oops. Such a frequent flyer here I assumed I was surely supposed to be here today. My bad." Paul winked at Kami before strolling away to the classroom's exit. No backpack on him. And he didn't even bother retrieving his cellphone from the box that she and the other students had put theirs in.

"Wait! Lahote! Why do you feel you should be in here? Lahote!" But Paul was already out the door and surely wasn't stopping to respond to reveal the classes he cut this morning. Kami was fascinated and wanted to learn how Paul got away with no detention. Hers was a result of skipping and the whole showing up drunk to school thing.

She was almost tempted to file his phone number in the "suggestion box" when it was her turn to leave detention. But she clutched that little piece of thin paper to her chest instead as she walked to her freedom that led to an empty house on Walker Street.

It wasn't until she got home that she reviewed the receipt with the following message scribbled (nearly unreadable!) under the ten digits.

Do yourself a favor when you get home. Scrub yourself a few times over in the shower. That mixture of puke, sweat and alcohol coming off of you is not winning you any fans, sweetheart.

Author's Note:

I almost waited to post. But started writing Ch 10 right when I finished this chapter so I thought why not keep up the spirit of Xmas giving haha I figured out some cool ideas for the plot forward. ~Pixelephant

Yes. These are short updates. But! I am able to knock them out faster too ; )

Response to Guest reviews based on order received:

Guest: Glad you are loving this story! I feel the same as the writing for it is flowing easily at the moment : ) This update was lowkey, but we got more drama to come!

Guest: Ha! You brought up something I hadn't thought about. I am sure she felt her reputation couldn't get any worse. I agree, I would have gone home to change too! Fictional characters are more tolerant I suppose about these things lol

Guest: B theory does suck for Kami! Thanks for sharing your opinion. Helps me think on this 'theory' more before I end up filling in that part of the story! We got a bit of a ways before we get to find out about jared/kim background.
