Chapter eight.
Hermione walked through the corridors of the school, heading towards Defence Against the Dark Arts, with Draco lingering a little bit behind her. She of course had noticed the blatant stares other students were giving them. She held her head up a bit higher, clocking eyes with a group of girls, who were whispering and giggling, glancing between the two of them.
She fought the urge to roll her eyes.
Slowing down a fraction, Hermione fell into step with Draco. She looked towards him and was pleasantly surprised to see him unphased by the looks and whispers. He was rummaging about in his bag, glancing up every so often to sidestep a student who was in his path.
Behind her, she could hear Theo and Blaise's booming voices as they spoke and laughed loudly. She turned her head to see Ginny looking frustrated as the boys practically bounced off the walls. She was also surprised to see Harry, walking alongside Ginny and the two Slytherin boys, hiding a grin as the boys continued to annoy his girlfriend.
Ron was nowhere in sight. Obviously.
Hermione heard Draco sigh heavily as he shut his bag and threw it over his left shoulder. He glanced behind him, taking in the view of his best friends, before he shook his head briefly. She watched him quietly with a raised eyebrow.
"Either they are completely oblivious, or obnoxious. I haven't figured out which one yet." He muttered to her as they continued walking down the hall.
Hermione snorted.
"Do they have to be one or can they be both?" She asked, turning to look at Draco who met her eyes with his usual blank expression. A hint of a smirk lingered on his face as he turned away from her.
Hermione watched as Draco looked over his shoulder one last time before Theo, Blaise, Harry and Ginny disappeared from their vision. He answered her by shrugging his shoulders.
They fell into silence as they continued their walk towards class.
….
Ron eventually stomped his way into the class, throwing his bag down haphazardly, as he sat down in the empty space next to Hermione. She tried to ignore him, keeping her eyes locked in front of her as he sighed theatrically.
After the fourth dramatic sigh, Hermione snapped her head in his direction, narrowing her eyes.
"Do you have to sigh so loudly?" She hissed, keeping her voice low as the class began to fill up with chattering students.
"Is my breathing bothering you now?"
"It is when you are doing it to be deliberately annoying, yes." Her voice was clipped as she answered him.
"Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something this morning?" Ron mumbled, grabbing his bag and throwing it on the table. Several students turned curiously towards them, and Hermione felt her cheeks warm in frustration.
"You seem to have forgotten about your appalling behaviour last night." Hermione hissed, meeting his eyes, her mouth set in a straight line. He popped his lips twice, infuriating her to no end, before he simply shrugged his shoulders.
"I would hardly call it appalling." His voice shot up an octave as if he were imitating how she had just spoke. Her eyes flashed in anger, but he ignored her death glare.
"Then what would you call it, Ronald?"
"I would call it karma." He answered her as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"Karma? Theo only asked you where the toilets were!" Hermione stared at him, unable to hide her stunned expression at his comment.
"He waltzed into our common room like he owned the place!" Ron snapped back, his voice gradually getting louder. He glanced around quickly, clearing his throat, before he turned back to face her. "He needed to be put in place."
"You really are an insufferable-"
The words died in her mouth as an owl swopped into the classroom, landing in front of Hermione. She turned her attention to the bird, reaching into her robe for a treat, and removing the letter. She ripped open the letter as the owl happily flew out the classroom. She could feel eyes on her, but she didn't dare look up.
"Miss Granger,
You are next. Please come to my office at once.
Headmistress McGonagall."
Straight to the point then.
Hermione met the Professors eyes, but he flicked his hand towards the door. She nodded mutely, grabbing her bag from the floor and avoided the intensity of Ron's stare. Hermione took a deep breath, her heart rate beginning to quicken as she pushed herself away from the table. She looked up briefly and found almost every student watching her. She held her head up higher, willing the flush to disappear from her face. As she walked out the room, she noticed steel grey eyes on her.
Hermione didn't dare look at him.
…
"Miss Granger, thank you for joining us so sharply." McGonagall appraised her, sliding her glasses an inch down her nose. Hermione nodded her head at the older woman in front of her, suddenly aware of how dry her mouth was. She tried to calm down her racing thoughts, wringing her hands together on her lap.
"You are allowed to be nervous." McGonagall spoke softly.
"I'm not nervous." Hermione lied, looking up towards the Headmistress, praying her tone of voice had come across confidently.
"I admire your Gryffindor courage, Miss Granger. I always have. However, you are a bad liar, as are most Gryffindor's unfortunately." Professor McGonagall smiled softly at Hermione, clasping her hands together on her desk.
"I'm worried that who I am soon to be magically tied to will not love me." She admitted, her voice only a breath above a whisper. Hermione wasn't sure McGonagall had even heard her to begin with, until she heard her softly sighing.
"You need not worry about that, Miss Granger. The person to whom you will be magically tied to will already harbour feelings for you." Hermione's eyes shot up at McGonagall's announcement, unable to mask her surprised expression. "This spell, as I have said before, does not create feelings. This will only amplify feelings further; perhaps feelings that may have remained dormant. It would bode you well to remember, Miss Granger, that there is a very thin line between feelings of love and hate."
Hermione stared at the older witch in a stunned silence, trying to process what she had just said. She almost certain that she harboured no hidden feelings for anyone. Hermione wore her heart on her sleeve, and what you saw was what you received. She had learnt a long time ago that it was unhealthy to hide any feelings. That is why she showed everything; whether it be animosity, frustration, happiness, sadness. She didn't hide anything.
Surely, she would have known if she were harbouring hidden feelings of infatuation or love?
Before, Hermione had time to work herself into a frenzy further, a stocky man with square shaped glasses, stepped out of a door within McGonagall's study that she had never noticed or seen in all her time at Hogwarts.
"Miss Granger, if you will please follow me." He curtly spoke, not looking up from his clipboard, as he disappeared quickly back through the door.
….
Hermione sat on a seat in front of the wizard. The room was empty, apart from the seat that she was currently occupying and a desk that the ministry official was leaning against. He glanced at her tiredly, before stepping forward and pulling out his wand.
"Today will be your first soulmate test. These tests will continue once every two months, if needed that is, until you find your soulmate. The spell will not hurt, and they will not cause any lift altering symptoms." He added at the end. "As your Headmistress stated before, this will not be instantaneous. The first spell will merely give hints of being under Amortentia. I can not say what you may experience as everyone will be different." He spoke quickly, darting his eyes to his watch, before finally looking over to Hermione.
"Are you ready to continue?" He asked.
Hermione didn't really feel like she had an option. In a few minutes time, her whole world will be flipped up down, and she had no idea what she would be feeling or thinking after the spell took hold.
She nodded her head sharply. The wizard in front of her lifted his wand and muttered something quietly under his breath. She closed her eyes tightly as a warm sensation came over her. Hermione felt the tips of her fingers begin to tingle, a cooling sensation settle in her stomach and her heart batter against her ribcage. Her whole body felt fluttery, and it felt as if her senses were overpowered by- something. Colours danced around behind her eyelids.
Orange.
Red.
Silver.
Green.
The four colours dominated against each other; each sparking brighter, blending in with each other, as the warm feeling invoking her body slowly began to disperse. She felt the tingling sensation in her fingers begin to settle.
Hermione could see clearly, as if she were standing there herself, a beautiful and clear night sky. She glanced around as she took in the glittering stars above her head, shinning and twinkling so bright that it looked as if they were dancing. She noticed a constellation stand out clearly in the night sky, cursing herself for not paying attention to astronomy. Hermione didn't recognise her surroundings, but she felt surprisingly at ease.
As the image began to drift away from her, the night sky shifted to grey, the stars still shinning brightly above her, until all that remained was a soft grey sky looming over her.
And then her eyes shot open.
