Chapter 6: Dark Homecoming
The Spardas ceased their friendly spar when thunder and lightening hit the sky but the sky was red. They ran outside and two of three pairs of eyes widened. Mira groaned and dropped to a knee. Oh shit! Father and Son mentally swore. Soon where Mira was, Dante was in her place.
"Oh man, this hurts like a bitch!" Dante groaned. "Why did Father have to put this on me?"
"To protect you." Vergil reminded the younger gently. Nero blinked but grinned.
"Can I still call you Mother?"
"Sure kid, it's accurate. Of course, I think your old man is dying for whiskey." No shit! Vergil thought as he looked at the three eyed. Vergil bristled and was about to take a stance when Dante put a hand on his arm.
"Don't be foolish," The younger warned. The twins shared a look in where the younger pleaded. Please, I can't lose you again! The elder sighed but relaxed a bit.
"Very well, we will fall back and plan. Observe and access." The elder led the younger devils back inside the office and controlled his anger. Even though in either form, it was his Mira, Vergil didn't want the younger Hunter to be at risk. Father did this for a reason. He knew….I won't allow his work to be in vain.
"Dante…..I can't allow you to…."
"Vergil, I understand…."
"Do you?" The Demon King asked as he looked at the younger Hunter. He grabbed the younger Hunter by the shoulders and his tears fell free. "Dante, I can't lose you, or Nero. I've missed so much already because of my foolishness….my mistakes….."He bowed his head and Dante heard him sob. "I can't lose MY family….I beg you….please…" His tears fell free. He felt soft, elegant and clearly a woman's hand in his hair, and another wiping his tears away. Vergil looked up and saw his Mira.
"How?!"
"I think the seal is broken….and yet, Mundus is back."
"I think…I feel…" Vergil closed his eyes and focused. In an instant, the Perfect Amulet appeared around his neck! Dante and Nero gasped.
"How did you?" Mira asked. She blinked and had an idea…."Verge, summon the Sparda."
"Mira, I can't summon that…."
"Vergil, try." She whispered. "You already have the Perfect Amulet . You learned to love. Nero and I believe that you're ready. The real question here is this, do you feel that you are ready?" Vergil pulled Mira in close and held her in a gentle yet firm grip. "I love you and our son. I'm ready." He leaned in and kissed Mira with all he had, pouring everything he ever felt into that one tender embrace. Nero blinked as he felt the power coming off them both. He saw the red and the blue, fire and ice, shadow and light….
When they broke away, there were shimmers of blue black, scarlet and black silver and gold before quieting down. Somehow, the demon before them was even bigger and more powerfully built. He was even more intimidating….
"Whoa….." Nero gaped as the demon stood to full height and spread massive blue black demon wings and a wicked looking tail swaying behind him slowly. Mira just smiled.
"Nero, it's OK kiddo." Mira said. "This is your father, in his final form, there is nothing to be afraid of." The massive demon looked at Nero with glowing blue eyes and Nero couldn't help but gulp. The other demons he ever encountered, no sweat. But THIS demon was his father.
"Unless you piss me off." The demon said in a deep voice examining his wicked looking claws. Nero nodded and ran upstairs. Mira waited until the door closed before laughing.
"Vergil, did you have to scare the kid?" She asked with a sigh. The demon king chuckled darkly and wrapped his wicked looking tail around her and pulled her to him.
"I'll put him at ease later, I promise. But now we have that nuisance to deal with."
"Promise me, you will not do anything foolish. That you will come home." The demon king looked at his intended and touched foreheads with her as he held her close.
"I promise." He whispered. Mira nodded and hugged him back the best she was able to. He's huge!
"Go and kick his ass for me! Now get going before your big butt destroys my office!" The demon king mock gasped but chuckled again.
"Be careful of your sweet tooth my love, we wouldn't want you to burst." Mira gasped then laughed. The massive demon king left and Nero opened his door.
"That was a scary motherfucker." He whistled. Mira chuckled and made dinner.
"Nero, be careful, as we get older, the bigger and more powerful we become."
"So, you're big too?"
"Not as big as your father." Mira said. "Demon Kings are way bigger. Kings of the Underworld, even bigger."
"Father is King of the Underworld?"
"Yea he ate that nasty ass fruit." Mira said shuddering. "I'm willing to bet it was gross."
"So what do we do?"
"We wait, and hope that your father succeeds. If I turn back, he failed then I'll have to go."
Vergil made sure the Perfect Amulet was not exposed as he tread carefully through the Underworld. Thanks to the stint he had done while in service to Mundus and afterwards, he knew where to go and where not to. He felt different, complete. I will not allow anyone or anything take this from me. I will return to my family. He gripped Yamato tighter and continued onward. He wanted justice for his family and for himself. He remembered hearing their mother's screams as he died, having had been stabbed by his own sword. He blamed himself for being weak. I was just a child….He blamed himself for leaving Fortuna after claiming his Mira, the whole tower thing, and challenging Mundus. My foolish pride….cost me everything! And yet: I gained so much more. Mira was right, I do have a thick skull. He approached the throne room and had to steel himself. He was no longer a 19 year old boy who was hung up on being just like his father. He sighed as he remembered his words that day in the Underworld.
'It would be fun to fight with the Prince of Darkness. ' A 19 year old Vergil said with a smirk. 'If my father could do it then I should be able to do it too!' His pride blinded him to what was truly important, his young wife who was expecting their son! As a child, his pride blinded him again, where he failed to protect his mother and sibling. The third, was when he planted the qliupoth, split himself and almost killed his son by ripping the Devil Bringer off. The blood of countless innocent people will forever be on his hands. It took his being split to truly see the wrong he had ever done. He ended up gaining his power and his family. His family was his true power. He closed his eyes, held the amulet and silently prayed. He replaced the amulet into his vest and threw the double doors open. What made him do a double take: was seeing the person on the Demon Throne….
"I've been expecting you." The Legendary Dark Knight said as he stared down at his eldest. Vergil blinked but took a stance.
"Father, you suffered enough. The time has come for you to rest in peace."
"Then, let's begin." Sparda said as he rose to his feet and brandished his namesake sword. Father and Son saluted each other then with battle cries, lunged at each other and with the ringing of swords clashing, battle began.
What a twist! Who will win?
